Retention Decreased (retention + decreased)
Selected AbstractsLong-term follow-up of achalasic patients treated with botulinum toxinDISEASES OF THE ESOPHAGUS, Issue 2 2000D'Onofrio Botulinum toxin A (BoTx), a potent inhibitor of acetylcholine release from nerve endings both within the myenteric plexus and at the nerve, muscle junction, has been shown to decrease the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) pressure in patients with achalasia. Because of this property, the esophageal injection of BoTx has been suggested as an alternative treatment in achalasia. The objective of this study was to determine the long-term efficacy and safety of intrasphincteric injection of BoTx in a group of achalasic patients. Nineteen patients (mean age 56.1 ± 19.2 years) were enrolled in the study. All of them were injected endoscopically with 100 U of BoTx by sclerotherapy needle at different sites of the LES. Symptom score (dysphagia, regurgitation and chest pain, each on a 0,3 scale), esophageal manometer and esophageal radionuclide emptying were assessed before the treatment and at 4 weeks, 3 months and 1 year after BoTx injection. In case of failure or relapse (symptom score >2), the treatment was repeated. All but five patients (74%) were in clinical remission at 1 month. Mean symptom score after 1 month of BoTx decreased from 7.1 ± 0.9 to 2.2 ± 2.5 (p < 0.05). LES pressure decreased from 38.4 ± 13.7 to 27.4 ± 13.5 mmHg (p < 0.05) and 10-min radionuclide retention decreased from 70.9 ± 20.7% to 33.8 ± 27.0% (p < 0.05). Side-effects (transient chest pain) were mild and infrequent. At 12 months, the clinical score was 0.9 ± 0.5 (p < 0.05 vs. basal); mean LES pressure was 22.0 ± 7.1 (p < 0.05 vs. basal) and 10-min radionuclide retention was 15.8 ± 6.0% (p < 0.05 vs. basal). The efficacy of the first injection of BoTx lasted for a mean period of 9 months (range 2,14 months). At the time of writing (follow-up period mean 17.6 months, range 2,31), 14 patients (10 with one injection) were still in remission (74%). Our results showed that one or two intrasphincteric injections of BoTx resulted in clinical and objective improvement in about 74% of achalasic patients and are not associated with serious adverse effects; the efficacy of BoTx treatment was long lasting; this procedure could be considered an attractive treatment, especially in elderly patients who are poor candidates for more invasive procedures. [source] Precipitation control over inorganic nitrogen import, export budgets across watersheds: a synthesis of long-term ecological researchECOHYDROLOGY, Issue 2 2008E. S. Kane Abstract We investigated long-term and seasonal patterns of N imports and exports, as well as patterns following climate perturbations, across biomes using data from 15 watersheds from nine Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites in North America. Mean dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) import, export budgets (N import via precipitation,N export via stream flow) for common years across all watersheds was highly variable, ranging from a net loss of , 0·17 ± 0·09 kg N ha,1mo,1 to net retention of 0·68 ± 0·08 kg N ha,1mo,1. The net retention of DIN decreased (smaller import, export budget) with increasing precipitation, as well as with increasing variation in precipitation during the winter, spring, and fall. Averaged across all seasons, net DIN retention decreased as the coefficient of variation (CV) in precipitation increased across all sites (r2 = 0·48, p = 0·005). This trend was made stronger when the disturbed watersheds were withheld from the analysis (r2 = 0·80, p < 0·001, n = 11). Thus, DIN exports were either similar to or exceeded imports in the tropical, boreal, and wet coniferous watersheds, whereas imports exceeded exports in temperate deciduous watersheds. In general, forest harvesting, hurricanes, or floods corresponded with periods of increased DIN exports relative to imports. Periods when water throughput within a watershed was likely to be lower (i.e. low snow pack or El Niño years) corresponded with decreased DIN exports relative to imports. These data provide a basis for ranking diverse sites in terms of their ability to retain DIN in the context of changing precipitation regimes likely to occur in the future. The experiments were carried out at temperatures ranging from 80 to 100 °C with juices at pH 3.5, 5 and 6.5. The degree of pigment retention decreased when the temperature increased. The degradation constant rates were determined for thermal degradation rates of pseudo-first order. The Arrhenius plot obtained for the degradation of betaxanthin from the yellow fruits was not linear. Regardless of the temperature treatment, the lowest degradation was obtained for pH 5. Where some stabilizers were tested for the protection of pigments, the results showed that ascorbic acid was a better protective agent at pH 3.5, increasing the protection by 40%. [source] Response of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to varying dietary astaxanthin/canthaxanthin ratio: colour and carotenoid retention of the muscleAQUACULTURE NUTRITION, Issue 5 2010G. CHOUBERT Abstract Rainbow trout with an average initial weight of 160 g were fed during 42 days diets containing varied keto-carotenoids astaxanthin (Ax)/canthaxanthin (Cx) ratio, as follows: Ax 100% : Cx 0%; Ax 75% : Cx 25%; Ax 50% : Cx 50%; Ax 25% : Cx 75% and Ax 0% : Cx 100%. Muscle colour and carotenoid muscle retention were studied. Colour parameter values for mixed astaxanthin,canthaxanthin-fed fish were intermediate between those obtained for Ax 0% : Cx 100% fed fish group and for Ax 100% : Cx 0% fed fish group. Concerning muscle carotenoid retention, it has been observed that as the level of canthaxanthin in diet increased, the muscle total carotenoid retention decreased. In the mean time, as the level of canthaxanthin in diet increased, the muscle astaxanthin retention decreased while that of canthaxanthin increased. The results reported here provide further evidence of non-beneficial effects in terms of muscle colour and muscle carotenoid retention of the use of varying dietary astaxanthin/canthaxanthin ratio for feeding rainbow trout compared to values obtained for astaxanthin-only feed. [source] Protein requirement for maintenance and maximum growth of two-banded seabream (Diplodus vulgaris) juvenilesAQUACULTURE NUTRITION, Issue 1 2009R.O.A. OZÓRIO Abstract The effects of various dietary protein levels on growth performance, whole body composition and nutrient utilization were studied in two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris), a candidate species for aquaculture. Fish (initial weight 6.1 g) were fed to satiety six iso-energetic diets, containing 5%, 12.5%, 25%, 35%, 45% or 55% of crude protein during 72 days. Fish fed 35% and 45% protein attained better growth and feed utilization than the other groups (P < 0.05). Daily growth index and feed conversion ratio were the poorest for fish fed 5% and 12.5% protein (P < 0.001), while the 25% and 55% protein groups had intermediate performance. Lipid retention increased significantly from 13.7% to 30.1% (P < 0.0001) and protein retention decreased from 35.5% to 21.3% (P < 0.01) with increasing protein levels from 12.5% to 45%. Muscle protein, lipid and energy concentrations were not significantly affected by dietary protein level. The estimated protein requirement for maintenance and maximum growth of two-banded seabream growing from 6 to 20 g were 7.5% and 35.7%, respectively. Protein requirements as calculated from body protein gain were 2.3 and 6.5 g of protein intake per kilogram body weight per day. [source] |
