Selected AbstractsEffect of endodontic irrigation on bonding of resin cement to radicular dentinEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORAL SCIENCES, Issue 1 2005Mikako Hayashi The influence of endodontic irrigation on shear bond strengths of resin cement to radicular dentin was investigated. Human radicular dentin blocks were divided into four groups and subjected to one of four endodontic irrigations: ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) group, 17% EDTA for 60 s; EDTA/sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) group, 17% EDTA for 60 s followed by 10 ml of 5% NaOCl for 15 s; NaOCl group, 10 ml of 5% NaOCl for 15 s; and control group, no treatment. Morphological changes of dentin surface after endodontic irrigation were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A resin block was bonded to the radicular dentin after irrigation using resin cement with either wet-bonding (Uni-Etch/One-Step; Bisco) or self-etching (Tyrian SPE/One-Step Plus; Bisco) adhesives. Shear bond strengths were measured and the penetration of resin tags into dentinal tubules at resin,dentin interface was observed by SEM. With the wet-bonding system, the shear bond strengths for the EDTA/NaOCl group, in which dentinal tubules openings and uniform resin tag penetration into dentinal tubules were observed, were significantly higher than the EDTA and control groups. With the self-etching system, the shear bond strengths were significantly lower in the EDTA group compared with the NaOCl and control groups. The effects of endodontic irrigation on the bonding of resin cement to radicular dentin depended on the dentin bonding system used. Pagavino Abstract Aim, To compare the percentage of gutta-percha-filled area (PGP) in simulated root canals when varying the penetration depth and function of the pluggers (heat versus heat plus vibration) using Endo Twinn. Methodology, Sixty-four resin blocks with simulated 34,35° curved canals were randomly divided into two groups in order to obtain two canal shapes: group A with 0.8 taper and group B with 0.4 taper. The apical portion of each canal was prepared to a size 20 K-file. The canals were filled with gutta-percha in combination with a root canal sealer. In each group 16 canals were filled using the Endo Twinn heat function and 16 canals by means of both the heat and the vibration function. All samples were sectioned horizontally at three levels (1.25, 2.5 and 4.0 mm from the working length) and the PGP was measured. Data were analysed using anova test. Results, At the 1.25 mm level PGP was significantly greater using the vibration function (P = 0.0329) and in 0.8 taper canals (P < 0.0001). At the 2.5 mm level the PGP was greater in the canals with 0.8 taper compared with a 0.4 taper with or without vibration (vibration, P = 0.0056; interaction taper-vibration, P = 0.0020). In 0.4 taper canals the PGP was greater when the vibration function was activated. At the 4 mm level in 0.8 taper canals there was no significant difference in PGP with or without the vibration (P = 0.6742). Conclusions, 0.8 taper canals had significantly greater PGP than 0.4 taper canals. At the 1.25 mm level there was significantly greater PGP when the vibration function was activated. [source] An evaluation of .06 tapered gutta-percha cones for filling of .06 taper prepared curved root canalsINTERNATIONAL ENDODONTIC JOURNAL, Issue 2 2005M. P. J. Gordon Abstract Aim, To compare the area occupied by gutta-percha, sealer, or void in standardized .06 tapered prepared simulated curved canals and in mesio-buccal canals of extracted maxillary first molars filled with a single .06 gutta-percha point and sealer or lateral condensation of multiple .02 gutta-percha points and sealer. Methodology, Simulated canals in resin blocks with either a 30° curve and radius of 10.5 mm (n = 20) or a 58° curve and 4.7 mm radius (n = 20) and curved mesio-buccal canals of extracted maxillary first molars (n = 20) were prepared using .06 ProFiles® in a variable tip crown-down sequence to an apical size 35 at 0.5 mm from the canal terminus or apical foramen. Ten 30° and 58° curved resin canals and 10 canals in the extracted teeth group were obturated with .02 taper gutta-percha cones and AH 26 sealer using lateral condensation. The time required to obturate was recorded. The remaining canals were obturated with a single .06 taper gutta-percha cone and AH 26 sealer. Excess gutta-percha was removed from the specimens using heat and the warm mass vertically condensed. Horizontal sections were cut at 0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 4.5, 7.5 and 11.5 mm from the canal terminus or apical foramen. Colour photographs were taken using an Olympus 35 mm camera attached to a stereomicroscope set at ×40 magnification, and then digitized using a flatbed scanner. The cross-sectional area of the canal contents was analysed using Adobe PhotoShop®. The percentage of gutta-percha, sealer or voids to the total root canal area were derived and data analysed using unpaired Student's t -test and the Mann,Whitney U -test. Results, In the 30° curved canals the levels had between 94 and 100% of the area filled with gutta-percha with no significant difference (P > 0.05) between the lateral condensation and single cone techniques. In the 58° curved canals the levels had 92,99% of the area filled with gutta-percha, with the single cone technique having significantly (P < 0.05) more gutta-percha fill at the 2.5 mm level only. In the mesio-buccal canals of the teeth the levels had between 72 and 96% of the area filled with gutta-percha with no significant difference (P > 0.05) between the lateral condensation and single cone technique. The time for obturation was significantly (P < 0.05) greater for lateral condensation compared with the single cone technique in all groups. Conclusions, The .06 taper single cone technique was comparable with lateral condensation in the amount of gutta-percha occupying a prepared .06 tapered canal. The .06 single cone technique was faster than lateral condensation. Ayar Abstract Aim, To compare the shaping ability of ProFile and K3 rotary Ni-Ti instruments when used in a variable tip sequence in simulated curved root canals with different curvature and radius. Methodology, ProFile or K3 .06 taper instruments were used to prepare simulated canals of 20° curvature and 5 mm radius (n = 10) and 30° curvature and 3 mm radius canals (n = 10) in resin blocks. All canals were prepared to an apical size 40 at 0.5 mm from the canal terminus using a variable tip crown-down sequence. Pre- and postinstrumentation digital images were recorded, and an assessment of the canal shape was determined using a computer image analysis program. The material removal from the inner and outer wall of the canal was measured at 28 measuring points, beginning 0.5 mm from the end-point of the canal and the data compared using the Mann,Whitney U -test. Results, In 20° and 30° canals both instruments significantly removed more (P < 0.05) material on the outer wall than the inner wall in the apical half of the canal. For ProFile files there was no significant difference in the amount of material removed on the outer canal wall between the 20° and 30° canals. However, in the K3 groups significantly more (P < 0.05) outer canal wall was removed in the apical area in 20° canals. When comparing both instruments the results showed that in 20° canals K3 instruments removed more outer and inner canal wall than ProFile instruments (P < 0.05) but that there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) between the instruments in 30° canals. Conclusion, Within the limitation of this study, both rotary nickel-titanium instruments prepared a well-shaped root canal with minimal canal transportation. ABDULLAH Objectives:, To compare the effect of brushing versus dipping using three different concentrations of fluoridated toothpastes on enamel erosion in vitro using surface profilometry. Methods:, In a randomised, blinded experiment six groups of seven enamel slabs each were cut and mounted into resin blocks, ground and checked for surface flatness using a scanning profilometer (Scantron Proscan 2000). Each slabs' surface was covered with nail varnish except for a small window (1 x 2 mm). Each group was immersed under static conditions for 2 minutes, five times daily in fresh 200 ml aliquots of citric acid 0.3% (pH = 3.6). In addition, three groups were immersed in three different fluoridated toothpastes (0 ppm F, 1100 ppm F, or 1450 ppm F) twice daily morning and evening for 2 minutes each time. The other three groups were brushed using the same toothpastes twice daily for 2 minutes each time. The total cycling period lasted 16 days during which the slabs were incubated overnight and between erosive challenges in artificial saliva at 37oC. A 60-minute gap was left between daytime immersions. Before and after dipping in the erosive solutions the slabs were rinsed with de-ionised water. After the cycling period, the slabs were analysed with the scanning profilometer to measure the amount of surface loss at day 4, 8, 12, and 16. Results:, Surface loss ± SD of enamel at day 16 caused by citric acid combined with dipping using non-fluoridated toothpaste was 61.19 ± 8.50 ,m, 1100 ppm F was 43.44 ± 10.94 ,m or 1450 ppm F was 34.98 ± 4.29 ,m. Surface Loss ± SD of enamel at day 16 caused by citric acid combined with brushing using 0 ppm F, 1100 ppm F, or 1450 ppm F toothpastes was 75.62 ±10.64, 63.51 ± 5.27 and 48.94 ± 13.67 ,m, respectively. Conclusion:, Enamel erosion was increased significantly (CI 95%) using brushing with toothpastes compared to dipping. In addition, enamel erosion showed a dose-response to fluoridated toothpastes. Silva Abstract Aim. Static Hertzian contact tests of monolayer glass-ceramics in trilayer configurations (glass-ceramic/cement/composite) have shown that thick cement layers lower strength. This study sought to test the hypothesis that thick resin cement layers lower mouth motion fatigue reliability for flat glass-ceramic/cement/composite trilayer systems and that aging in water reduces reliability. Methods. Dicor plates (n , 12 per group) (10 × 10 × 0.8 mm3) were aluminum-oxide abraded (50 ,m), etched (60 s), silanized, and bonded (Rely X ARC) to water aged (30 days) Z100 resin blocks (10 × 10 × 4 mm3). Four groups were prepared: (1) thick cement layer (>100 ,m) stored in water for 24,48 h, (2) thick cement layer stored for 60 days, (3) thin cement layer (,100 ,m) stored for 24,48 h, and (4) thin cement layer stored for 60 days. The layered structures were fatigued (2 Hz) utilizing mouth motion loading with a step-stress acceleration method. A master Weibull distribution was calculated and reliability determined (with 90% confidence intervals) at a given number of cycles and load. Results. The aged group (60 d) with thick cement layer had statistically lower reliability for 20,000 cycles at 150 N peak load (0.11) compared with both nonaged groups (24,48 h) (thin layer = 0.90 and thick layer = 0.82) and aged group with thin cement layer (0.89). Conclusion. Trilayer specimens with thick cement layers exhibited significantly lower reliability under fatigue testing only when stored for 60 days in water. The hypothesis was accepted. These results suggest that diffusion of water into the resin cement and also to the glass-ceramic interface is delayed in the thick cement specimens at 24,48 h. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The null hypothesis was that the "etch-and-rinse" adhesive system would generate higher bond strengths than the self-etching adhesives. Materials and Methods:, Thirty-two human molars were randomly divided into four groups (N = 32, n = 8/per group): G1) ED Primer self-etching adhesive + Panavia F; G2) All-Bond 2 "etch-and-rinse" adhesive + Panavia F; G3) Multilink primer A/B self-etching adhesive + Multilink resin cement; G4) All-Bond 2 + Multilink. After cementation of composite resin blocks (5 × 5 × 4 mm), the specimens were stored in water (37°C, 24 hours), and sectioned to obtain beams (±1 mm2 of adhesive area) to be submitted to microtensile test. The data were analyzed using 2-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (, = 0.05). Results:, Although the cement type did not significantly affect the results (p = 0.35), a significant effect of the adhesive system (p = 0.0001) was found on the bond strength results. Interaction terms were not significant (p = 0.88751). The "etch-and-rinse" adhesive provided significantly higher bond strength values (MPa) with both resin cements (G2: 34.4 ± 10.6; G4: 33.0 ± 8.9) compared to the self-etching adhesive systems (G1: 19.8 ± 6.6; G3: 17.8 ± 7.2) (p < 0.0001). Pretest failures were more frequent in the groups where self-etching systems were used. Conclusion:, Although the cement type did not affect the results, there was a significant effect of changing the bonding strategy. The use of the three-step "etch-and-rinse" adhesive resulted in significantly higher bond strength for both resin cements on dentin. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Dual polymerized resin cements tested could deliver higher bond strength to dentin in combination with "etch-and-rinse" adhesive systems as opposed to their use in combination with self-etching adhesives. The aim of this study was to compare the bonding performance of a resin-modified glass ionomer cement and a self-adhesive resin cement to various fixed prosthodontic core materials. Methods:, Cylindrical specimens with a thickness of 2 mm and a diameter of 5 mm were fabricated from Au-Pd-Ag, Co-Cr, Ni-Cr-Mo, Ni-Cr-Fe alloys, titanium, zirconia and Empress II (n = 20). Each group was divided into two subgroups to be luted with two different luting agents. Composite resin blocks were cemented onto specimens with RelyXUnicem and FujiCem. A shear bond strength machine with 50 kg load cell and 0.50 mm/min crosshead speed was used. Kruskal Wallis test, Dunn's Multiple Range test and Mann-Whitney-U test were used for statistical analysis. The results were evaluated in a confidence interval of p < 0.05. Results:, The highest bond strength was obtained between Ni-Cr-Fe-RelyXUnicem (8.22 ± 2.15 MPa) and the lowest was between Empress II-FujiCem (1.48 ± 0.9 MPa). In FujiCem groups, Co-Cr and Ni-Cr-Fe showed significantly higher bond strength than Au-Pd-Ag and Empress II. In RelyX Unicem groups, Ni-Cr-Fe showed higher bond strength than Empress II. Conclusions:, The types of luting agents and restorative core materials may have a significant influence on bond strength. [source] |
