Selected AbstractsThe estimation of sibling genetic risk parameters revisitedGENETIC EPIDEMIOLOGY, Issue 4 2004Guohua Zou Abstract This report points out that some sibling genetic risk parameters can be regarded as the ratios of the characteristic values in the ascertainment subpopulation. Based on this observation, we reconsider Olson and Cordell's ([2000] Genet. Epidemiol. 18:217,235) and Cordell and Olson's ([2000] Genet. Epidemiol. 18:307,321) estimators, and re-derive these estimators. Furthermore, we provide the closed-form variance estimators. Simulation results suggest that our proposed estimators perform very well, and single ascertainment may be better than complete ascertainment for estimating these genetic parameters. © 2004 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [source] Perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) with perirenal manifestationINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF UROLOGY, Issue 5 2005SVEN GUNIA Abstract We present the first case report documenting an 8-month post-surgical follow-up of an exceedingly rare perivascular epithelioid cell tumor (PEComa) with a perirenal location. Furthermore, prognostic parameters discussed in the literature are summarized and concise information regarding imaging characteristics on magnetic resonance imaging is provided. In conclusion, our report points toward PEComa as a family of very rare mesenchymal neoplasms that should be included into deliberations concerning the differential diagnosis of perirenal mass lesions. [source] Monomorphic Ventricular Tachycardia Induced by Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy in Patient with Severe Nonischemic Dilated CardiomyopathyPACING AND CLINICAL ELECTROPHYSIOLOGY, Issue 3 2006AGUSTÍN BORTONE We report the case of a patient with severe nonischemic dilated cardiomyopathy in whom cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) was the source of incessant, drug-resistant, monomorphic ventricular tachycardia (VT). VT recurrences were only resolutive with inactivation of CRT and reactivation of CRT reproduced VT occurrence. The possible pathophysiology of the VT and the potential ventricular proarrhythmic risk related to CRT are discussed. This report points out clearly that CRT can induce ventricular arrhythmias and suggests the need for CRT systematically associated with a defibrillation system. [source] Oil Prices and Stocks in the Second Quarter of 2004OPEC ENERGY REVIEW, Issue 1 2004OPEC Secretariat Notwithstanding forecasting difficulties, the oil supply and demand balance has proved to be a good indicator of the state of the market and stock levels, which, in turn, influence price behaviour. In periods where OECD commercial stock levels lie within a certain range, currently around 2,450,2,650 million barrels, the range of prices is larger than when stock levels are very high or very low. In both the latter extreme situations, prices are prone to rapid movements, undermining market stability. Other factors, of course, also influence price fluctuations. The general opinion among regularly published oil market reports points to the inevitability of a higher-than-normal build in stocks in the second quarter of 2004. If the resulting surplus is not handled in a timely and effective manner, there is likely to be excessive downward pressure on prices, which, if left unattended, would lead to a protracted spell of volatility.
