Abstract The asymmetric epoxidation of electron-deficient olefins has been achieved using inexpensive and readily available prolinols as catalysts with good to excellent yields and enantioselectivities. The utility of the resulting chiral epoxides was illustrated by elaboration to several synthetically useful compounds featuring a concise synthesis of (,)-(5R,6S)-balasubramide. [source]


Mass spectrometry in newborn and metabolic screening: historical perspective and future directions

Abstract The growth of mass spectrometry (MS) in clinical chemistry has primarily occurred in two areas: the traditional clinical chemistry areas of toxicology and therapeutic drug monitoring and more recent, human genetics and metabolism, specifically inherited disorders of intermediary metabolism and newborn screening. Capillary gas chromatography and electrospray tandem MS are the two most common applications used to detect metabolic disease in screening, diagnostics and disease monitoring of treated patients. A few drops of blood from several million newborn infants are screened annually throughout the world making this the largest application of MS in medicine. Understanding the technique, how it grew from a few dozen samples per week in the early 1990s to increasing daily volume today will provide important information for new tests that either expand newborn screening or screening in other areas of metabolism and endocrinology. There are numerous challenges to the further expansion of MS in clinical chemistry but also many new opportunities in closely related applications. The model of newborn screening and MS in medicine may be useful in developing other applications that go beyond newborns and inherited metabolic disease. As MS continues to expand in clinical chemistry, it is clear that two features will drive its success. Quasistatic TEM characteristics of multilayer elliptical and cylindrical coplanar waveguides

Abstract Simple analytic CAD-oriented expressions are presented for calculating the quasistatic TEM parameters of multilayer elliptical coplanar waveguides (ME CPWs) and multilayer cylindrical coplanar waveguides (MC CPWs) by using the conformal mapping method. It is shown that the derived expressions are accurate and very simple for use in related applications. Commercial carbon nanotubes as heterogeneous catalysts in energy related applications

Abstract We report the application of commercial carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in two important heterogeneously catalyzed reactions, i.e., NH3 decomposition and oxidative dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene (EB). For NH3 decomposition, CNTs were used as supports for Co,Mo nanoparticles. The structure of fresh and used catalysts was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and line-scan energy dispersive X-ray (EDX). Most of the nanoparticles are individually separated and the synergism mainly increases the long-term stability rather than the activity. For the oxidative dehydrogenation, the metal-free CNTs display a superior performance as compared to the Fe-doped CNTs. The outstanding results in both reactions predict an extremely promising future of commercial nanocarbons in modern catalysis. [source]


Baculovirus P35 protein: An overview of its applications across multiple therapeutic and biotechnological arenas

Abstract Baculovirus immediate early P35 protein is well known for its anti-apoptotic as well as anti-oxidant properties. Mechanism of action of P35 involves inhibition of a vast range of initiator to executioner class of caspases. In addition, P35's role in inhibiting oxidant-induced mitochondrial damage, primarily in the apoptotic pathway, has also been extensively investigated. Elucidation of P35's functions during regulation of programmed cell death (PCD) has led to a renewed focus on exploiting this basic knowledge for clinical and other related applications. This review outlines specific biochemical and genetic pathways where P35 intervenes and regulates rate-limiting steps in the apoptotic signaling cascade. Research efforts are underway to utilize P35 as an agent in regulating apoptosis and under certain circumstances, also explore the therapeutic potential of its anti-oxidant features. One of the major outcomes of recent studies include significantly improved effectiveness of cytochrome P450 directed enzyme pro-drug delivery tools when used in conjunction with P35, which may help in alleviating drug resistance in tumor cells and simultaneously prolonging the cytotoxic effects of anti-cancer drugs. Moreover, applied research carried out recently in the fields of diabetes, ischemia-induced neuronal cell death, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), multiple sclerosis (MS), inflammatory arthritis, cardiovascular and ocular disorders illustrate P35's utilization across diverse therapeutic areas and will certainly make it an attractive biomolecule for the discovery research. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Biotechnol.
