Applying Network Analysis to the Conservation of Habitat Trees in Urban Environments: a Case Study from Brisbane, Australia

We used roost-switching data on white-striped freetail bats (Tadarida australis; Microchiroptera: Molossidae) to construct a network representation of day roosts in suburban Brisbane, Australia. Bats were caught from a communal roost tree with a roosting group of several hundred individuals and released with transmitters. Each roost used by the bats represented a node in the network, and the movements of bats between roosts formed the links between nodes. Despite differences in gender and reproductive stages, the bats exhibited the same behavior throughout three radiotelemetry periods and over 500 bat days of radio tracking: each roosted in separate roosts, switched roosts very infrequently, and associated with other bats only at the communal roost. This network resembled a scale-free network in which the distribution of the number of links from each roost followed a power law. Despite being spread over a large geographic area (>200 km2), each roost was connected to others by less than three links. One roost (the hub or communal roost) defined the architecture of the network because it had the most links. That the network showed scale-free properties has profound implications for the management of the habitat trees of this roosting group. Scale-free networks provide high tolerance against stochastic events such as random roost removals but are susceptible to the selective removal of hub nodes. Network analysis is a useful tool for understanding the structural organization of habitat tree usage and allows the informed judgment of the relative importance of individual trees and hence the derivation of appropriate management decisions. Conservation planners and managers should emphasize the differential importance of habitat trees and think of them as being analogous to vital service centers in human societies. Local annual survival of booming male Great Bittern Botaurus stellaris in Britain, in the period 1990,1999

Male Great Bitterns Botaurus stellaris have individually distinctive boom vocalizations which have been used since 1990 to count the British population accurately. We used vocal individuality to identify birds between years and analyse the survival of the British booming population. We used six instances of Great Bitterns known to be the same birds (from radio tracking and re-sighting of darvic rings) in successive years to provide a means of identification independent from vocalizations. All of these birds remained in the same territory from one year to the next. Seven spectrogram measures were chosen as quantitative descriptors of Great Bittern booms. Boom similarity was expressed in terms of Euclidean ,acoustic' distance between descriptors of pairs of birds. Great Bitterns that were known to be the same birds had more similar booms across years than those known to be different. The acoustic distances and knowledge of site fidelity were used to construct parsimonious rules on which to base re-identification decisions and to build survival histories. Great Bittern local survival in Britain as a whole was estimated as 70% (± 5.1 se) with survival in north-west England (at Leighton Moss) higher (82.8%, ± 7.3 se) than that in East Anglian sites (65.2%, ± 5.4 se) (,12 = 3.4, P = 0.07). Movements of males between years were apparent between sites within the Suffolk and Norfolk coastal regions but not on a large scale. Survival of adult males in East Anglia was positively related to winter rainfall, but there was no significant relationship with winter temperature. There was a positive relationship between the annual population change in East Anglia and the annual local adult survival rate. [source]


Simulating the East African wildebeest migration patterns using GIS and remote sensing

Abstract The Serengeti,Mara ecosystem in East Africa is a spectacular natural heritage endowed with diverse fauna and flora. The presence of the seasonally migrating wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) is a major boost for tourism. This migration however has enormous impacts to the ecosystem. Consequently efforts at monitoring the herd's migration trends and patterns remain a challenge to wildlife managers and ecologists in the region. In this paper, the relative influence of vegetation (normalized difference vegetation index), landscape and relief on herds migration routes are investigated and the migration routes simulated using GIS and remote sensing techniques. The results are compared with the annual mean route taken by the herds, as determined by radio tracking over the 1995,1997 period. Green vegetation availability is shown to be the major criterion in route choice. It is also shown that during the dry season phases of the migration (western trek, western corridor), the herd endures complex relief (complexity quantified based on slope and inter-visibility) in the search for greener grass. During the season of abundance (southern trek), relief becomes critical in making route choices, with herds avoiding difficult terrain, notwithstanding their relatively more abundant vegetation. The method proposed in this paper is viable for rapid prediction of approximate routes for the migrating wildebeest in different climatic conditions. Résumé L'écosystème Serengeti,Mara en Afrique Occidental est un patrimoine naturel spectaculaire, doté des divers variétés de flore et de faune. La présence du gnou migrateur (Connochaetes taurinus) représente un atout majeur pour le tourisme. Néanmoins, cette migration a un impact énorme sur l'écosystème. Par conséquence, la surveillance des tendances migratoires du troupeau est un défi constant pour les gérants et les écologistes dans la région. Dans cette enquête, l'influence relative de la végétation (NDVI), le paysage et le relief, sur les routes du migration prises par le troupeau ont étéétudiés, et simulés utilisant le Système d'Information Géographique (SIG) et des techniques de perception à distance. Les résultats sont comparés à la moyenne annuelle des routes prises par les troupeaux, déterminée par le repérage radio pendant la période allant de 1995 a 1997. Le disponibilité de végétation verte s'avère le déterminant majeur dans le choix du chemin. Il est aussi démontré que pendant les phases du migration en saison sèche (périple vers l'ouest, couloir vers l'ouest) le troupeau subit des reliefs complexes (complexité calculée sur la pente et inter visibilité) à la recherche de l'herbe la plus verte. Pendant la saison d'abondance (périple vers le sud), l'impact du relief sur le choix des routes devient critique, les troupeaux évitant le terrain difficile, malgré sa végétation relativement abondante. La méthode présentée dans cette étude permet de prédire de façon rapide et valable la route approximative des gnous en cours de migration dans des conditions climatiques diverses. [source]


Spatial and temporal habitat use of kob antelopes (Kobus kob kob, Erxleben 1777) in the Comoé National Park, Ivory Coast as revealed by radio tracking

Abstract Spatial and temporal habitat use of kob antelopes (Kobus kob kob) have been investigated in the Comoé National Park (Ivory Coast, West Africa) by use of radio telemetry. A total of 23 kob were equipped with radio collars and radio tracked for up to 15 months. Home ranges of males were smaller and those of females larger than expected from theoretical models. Adult males used smaller areas than adult females and did not show seasonal home range shifts. Daily distances travelled did not differ between sexes. Kob walked less during the night than by day and covered shorter distances in the wet season. Whereas an increase in home range overlap between females resulted in higher rates of association among individuals, association of adults of mixed sexes was not correlated with the degree of home range overlap. Territorial behaviour of males and predator avoidance by females are suggested to explain the sex-specific differences in home range size of adults and the deviation from the predicted sizes. Predator avoidance is presumed as the main reason for the reduced walking distances at night as well as in the wet season. Reproductive behaviour and feeding ecology are assumed to determine the degree of association of conspecifics. Résumé On a étudié par radio-télémétrie l'utilisation spatiale et temporelle de l'habitat par les cobes (Kobus kob kob) au Parc National de Comoé (en Côte d'Ivoire, Afrique de l'Ouest). On a équipé un total de 23 cobes de colliers radio et on les a suivis pendant 15 mois (pour certains). L'espace vital des mâles était plus petit et celui des femelles plus grand que ce à quoi on s'attendait d'après les modèles théoriques. Les mâles adultes couvraient une zone plus réduite que les femelles adultes et ne déplaçaient pas leur espace vital en fonction des saisons. Les distances parcourues chaque jour étaient les mêmes pour les deux sexes. Les cobes se déplaçaient moins la nuit que le jour, et couvraient de plus courtes distances pendant la saison des pluies. Alors qu'une augmentation du recouvrement entre espaces vitaux des femelles aboutissait à un taux supérieur d'associations entre individus, l'association d'adultes des deux sexes n'était pas liée au taux de recouvrement des espaces vitaux. On suggère que le comportement territorial des mâles et l'évitement des prédateurs par les femelles pourraient expliquer les différences, spécifiques au sexe, de la dimension de l'espace vital des adultes et la déviation par rapport aux dimensions prévues. On suppose que l'évitement des prédateurs est la raison principale de la limitation des déplacements de nuit ainsi qu'en saison des pluies. Birds after dark: an efficient and inexpensive system for making long-range observations at night

ABSTRACT The ability of investigators to study the behavior of animals at night is often limited by the difficulties of making observations in the dark, particularly at a distance. Indirect techniques, such as radio tracking, generally produce limited behavioral data, and most night-viewing equipment tends to be both inefficient for making long-range observations and expensive. We describe a long-range night-vision system consisting of a camcorder and infrared laser illuminators. We tested the performance of this system by comparing our ability to quantify the foraging behavior of shorebirds during the day and at night. Distance thresholds for detecting ingestion of prey and for identifying them were similar during the day and night for all species. At night, we were able to quantify all foraging parameters for all species at distances up to 59 m, and to count pecks and steps at distances greater than 200 m for some species. The observation system we describe can be further improved by using camcorders with higher optical zooms or more powerful infrared laser illuminators. Because of its efficiency and relatively low cost, this system has the potential for being useful in many other applications that require long-range observations of animals at night. SINOPSIS La habilidad de los investigadores para estudiar el comportamiento nocturno de los animales es frecuentemente limitada por las dificultades de realizar observaciones en la oscuridad, particularmente a largas distancias. Los métodos indirectos como la radio telemetría generalmente producen datos limitados en cuanto al comportamiento y la mayor parte de los equipos para realizar observaciones nocturnas tienden a ser caros e ineficientes para realizar observaciones a larga distancia. Describimos un sistema para realizar observaciones nocturnas a larga-distancia cual consiste de una videocámara e iluminadores de láser infrarrojos. Probamos este sistema mediante una comparación de nuestra habilidad de cuantificar el comportamiento de forrajeo de aves playeras durante el día y durante la noche. Los umbrales para detectar el consumo de presas y para la identificación de las mismas fueron similares durante el día y durante la noche para todas las especies. Durante la noche pudimos cuantificar todos los parámetros de forrajeo para todas las especies hasta una distancia de 59 m y para algunas especies pudimos contar los picotazos y pasos de las aves a distancias mayores de 200 m. El sistema de observación que describimos puede ser mejorado mediante el uso de videocámaras con zoom ópticos más potentes o con iluminadores de láser infrarrojo más potentes. Por su eficiencia y su costo relativamente bajo, este sistema tiene el potencial de ser útil en varias otras aplicaciones que requieren observaciones nocturnas de animales a larga distancia. [source]
