Selected AbstractsA survey-based exploration of the impact of dyslexia on career progression of UK registered nursesJOURNAL OF NURSING MANAGEMENT, Issue 1 2007DAVID MORRIS MSc RGN RCNT RNT DipN CertEd Aim, To explore the effects of dyslexia on the practice and career progression of UK registered nurses (RN). Background, Literature suggests dyslexia can have a negative impact in the workplace and may pose particular difficulties for nurses, where accuracy in information processing activities is essential for practice. Methods, A questionnaire was used to survey RNs with dyslexia (n = 116) and results analysed using content analysis. Findings, Dyslexia provided a challenge to the everyday work of RNs, which was often met successfully using a range of individualized strategies. Career progression was achievable but compared with peers, was perceived to take longer. Disclosure of dyslexia to work-colleagues was selective and dependent on the perceived benefits. Informal support mechanisms were commonly utilized with formal management support less well defined. Conclusion, Dyslexia appears to have a negative impact on working practices and career progression, but remains a poorly understood and often hidden disability. [source] Information Processing and Firm-Internal Environment Contingencies: Performance Impact on Global New Product DevelopmentCREATIVITY AND INNOVATION MANAGEMENT, Issue 3 2010Elko Kleinschmidt Innovation in its essence is an information processing activity. Thus, a major factor impacting the success of new product development (NPD) programs, especially those responding to global markets, is the firm's ability to access, share and apply NPD information, which is often widely dispersed, functionally, geographically and culturally. To this end, an IT-communication strength is essential, one that is nested in an internal organizational environment that ensures its effective functioning. Using organizational information processing (OIP) theory as a framework, superior global NPD program performance is shown to result from an effective IT/Communication strength and the commitment components of the firm's internal environment, which are hypothesized to moderate this relationship. IT/Communication strength is identified in this study in terms of two components including the IT/Comm Infrastructure and IT/Comm Capability of the firm, whereas the moderating internal environment of the firm incorporates Resource Commitment and Senior Management Involvement. Data from a major empirical study of international NPD programs (382 SBUs) are used to develop and test this model. Based on a hierarchical regression analysis, the results are substantially supportive, with some unexpected findings. These shed light on the complex relationships of the firm's internal environment, OIP competency, and global NPD program performance. [source] VH1-69 germline encoded antibodies directed towards ADAMTS13 in patients with acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpuraJOURNAL OF THROMBOSIS AND HAEMOSTASIS, Issue 3 2009W. POS Summary.,Background: Autoantibodies directed towards ADAMTS13 are present in the majority of patients with acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). Analysis of a set of antibodies derived from two patients with acquired TTP revealed frequent use of the VH1-69 heavy chain gene segment for the assembly of anti-ADAMTS13 antibodies. Objective: We explored the ability of two VH1-69 germline gene-encoded antibodies to inhibit the von Willebrand factor (VWF)-processing activity of ADAMTS13 under different experimental conditions. Furthermore, the presence of VH1-69 encoded anti-ADAMTS13 antibodies in 40 patients with acquired TTP was monitored using monoclonal antibody G8, which specifically reacts with an idiotype expressed on VH1-69 encoded antibodies. Methods and Results: Binding of the two VH1-69 encoded monoclonal antibodies was dependent on the presence of the spacer domain. Both antibodies inhibited ADAMTS13 activity under static conditions, as measured by cleavage of FRETS-VWF73 substrate and cleavage of VWF multimers. The recombinant antibodies were also capable of inhibiting the processing of UL-VWF strings on the surface of endothelial cells. G8-reactive antibodies directed towards ADAMTS13 were present in plasma of all patients containing anti ADAMTS13 antibodies. Conclusions: These results suggest that VH1-69 derived antibodies directed towards ADAMTS13 develop in the majority of patients with acquired TTP. [source] An in vitro enzymatic assay coupled to proteomics analysis reveals a new DNA processing activity for Ewing sarcoma and TAF(II)68 proteinsPROTEINS: STRUCTURE, FUNCTION AND BIOINFORMATICS, Issue 22 2006Olivier Guipaud Abstract Based on structural and functional similarities, translocated in liposarcoma/fusion (TLS/FUS) protein, Ewing sarcoma,(EWS) protein and human TATA binding protein-associated factor (hTAF(II)68) have been grouped in the TLS-EWS-TAF(II)68 (TET) protein family. Translocations involving their genes lead to sarcomas. Polypyrimidine tract-binding protein-associated splicing factor,(PSF), although not grouped in this family, presents structural and functional similarities with TET proteins and is involved in translocation leading to carcinoma. Beside their role in RNA metabolism, the precise cellular functions of these multifunctional proteins are not yet fully elucidated. We previously showed that both TLS/FUS and PSF display activities able to pair homologous DNA on membrane in an in,vitro assay. In the present study, we address the question whether EWS and hTAF(II)68 also display pairing on membrane activities, and to a larger extent whether other proteins also exhibit such activity. We applied the pairing on membrane assay to 2-DE coupled to MS analysis for a global screening of DNA pairing on membrane activities. In addition to TLS/FUS and PSF, this test allowed us to identify EWS and hTAF(II)68, but no other proteins, indicating a feature specific to a protein family whose members share extensive structural similarities. This common activity suggests a role for TET proteins and PSF in genome plasticity control. [source] Analysis of magnetic source localization of P300 using the multiple signal classification algorithmPSYCHIATRY AND CLINICAL NEUROSCIENCES, Issue 6 2006TETSUO UOHASHI md Abstract, The authors studied the localization of P300 magnetic sources using the multiple signal classification (MUSIC) algorithm. Six healthy subjects (aged 24,34 years old) were investigated with 148-channel whole-head type magnetencephalography using an auditory oddball paradigm in passive mode. The authors also compared six stimulus combinations in order to find the optimal stimulus parameters for P300 magnetic field (P300m) in passive mode. Bilateral MUSIC peaks were located on the mesial temporal, superior temporal and parietal lobes. Interestingly, all MUSIC peaks in these regions emerged earlier in the right hemisphere than in the left hemisphere, suggesting that the right hemisphere has predominance over the left in the processing activity associated with P300m. There were no significant differences among the six stimulus combinations in evoking those P300m sources. The results of the present study suggest that the MUSIC algorithm could be a useful tool for analysis of the time-course of P300m. [source] Consumer persuasion: Indirect change and implicit balancePSYCHOLOGY & MARKETING, Issue 10 2010Javier Horcajo The present research examines two main issues relevant to consumer persuasion: (1) whether automatic evaluations can change (both directly and indirectly) in response to verbal ads that engage deliberative information processing activity, and (2) whether such messages can result in spreading activation of implicit change that is consistent with balance principles. The first study showed that automatic evaluations of vegetables were more favorable after people read a health ad than a control message. The results of Study 2 showed that automatic associations toward Heineken (a brand associated with the color green) were also more favorable as a result of processing a message advocating the color green than a neutral control message. Consistent with the idea that automatic changes can be consequential not only for brands but also for consumer identity, participants of Study 3 showed more automatic self,vegetable associations after thinking about the benefits (rather than the negative consequences) of consuming vegetables. A final study revealed that false feedback increasing (vs. decreasing) self,product identity led to more favorable automatic attitudes toward the product, but only for those with relatively high scores on the implicit measure of self-esteem. Taken together, this series of studies suggests that automatic changes that result from consumer persuasion are consequential in terms of spreading activation and that they seem to respond to balance principles. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source] The determination of N- nitrosamines in foodQUALITY ASSURANCE & SAFETY OF CROPS & FOOD, Issue 1 2010Colin Crews Abstract Introduction N -nitrosamines are formed in food as a result of natural chemical interactions, but mainly through food processing activity. Most are potent carcinogens and their determination is therefore of considerable importance. They exist in various chemical forms and have been measured by colorimetric and spectroscopic methods following gas or liquid chromatography or as a total N -nitroso group by measurement of chemically released nitric oxide. Objectives To provide an overview of the available methods for the analysis of N -nitrosamines in food that includes recently developments. Methods The literature was reviewed from the discovery of the N -nitrosamine problem and the introduction on the N -nitroso-specific detector. Results The evaluation shows that analytical detection methods for volatile N -nitrosamines in food have changed little since the introduction on the N -nitroso-specific detector and that research into the occurrence and formation of both non-volatile N -nitrosamines and the apparent total N -nitroso content (ATNC) have declined. Methods for measuring the apparent total N -nitroso content have not been improved significantly in recent years. Conclusion Modern sample extraction techniques and mass spectrometric methods for the volatile N -nitrosamines have been applied more extensively to water analysis and offer a good opportunity to improve the determination of these carcinogens in food and make the analysis more widely available. Developments in liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry should provide an avenue for renewed interest in non-volatile N -nitrosamines, and could help with the identification of novel compounds whose presence is suggested by the high apparent total N -nitroso content of some foods.
