Genetic structure and gene flow in wild beet populations: the potential influence of habitat on transgene spread and risk assessment

Summary 1The consequences of the movement of transgenes from genetically modified (GM) crops into wild populations of plants continues to be of concern to ecologists and conservationists because of the possible threat posed to those populations in terms of their continued survival and because of the further knock-on effects that might occur to habitats in which they occur. 2We examined five UK sea beet Beta vulgaris ssp. maritima populations from each of two major habitat types, cliff top and drift line. We assessed population genetic parameters, genetic diversity, gene flow, population differentiation and isolation by distance, to enable determination of the likelihood and consequences of spread to wild populations of genes from cultivated sugar beet group Beta vulgaris ssp. vulgaris, which could in the future be transgenic. 3Drift line populations were more diverse than cliff top populations and also showed greater levels of gene flow. 4Isolation by distance was identified in both habitats, but the relationship between genetic and geographical distance was detectable over longer distances for drift line populations. However, clear indications of vicariance (the subdivision of a population into distinct taxa by the appearance of a geological barrier) between cliff and drift line populations were also evident, because of the restriction of gene flow between the two habitats occurring more in one direction than the other. 5Synthesis and applications. The likelihood of transgene spread from crop to wild populations is habitat dependent and conservation management decisions could therefore vary from one population to another, for example water courses were found to facilitate seed dispersal. This should be taken into account when estimating isolation distances for GM beet, and when predicting transgene frequencies (exposure estimates) for environmental risk assessments of GM beet. Language Choice Online: Globalization and Identity in Egypt

The dominance of English on the Internet in the medium's early years caused great consternation about a possible threat to local languages and cultures. Though the hegemony of English online has since weakened, there is still concern about how English and other languages interact online, but there has been almost no research on this issue. This paper combines linguistic analysis, a survey, and interviews to examine English and Arabic language use in online communications by a group of young professionals in Egypt. The study indicates that, among this group, English is used overwhelmingly in Web use and in formal e-mail communication, but that a Romanized version of Egyptian Arabic is used extensively in informal e-mail messages and online chats. This online use of English and Arabic is analyzed in relation to broader social trends of language, technology, globalization, and identity. [source]

Abstract Climate change is unequivocal and represents a possible threat for patients affected by allergic conditions. It has already had an impact on living organisms, including plants and fungi with current scenarios projecting further effects by the end of the century. Over the last three decades, studies have shown changes in production, dispersion and allergen content of pollen and spores, which may be region- and species-specific. In addition, these changes may have been influenced by urban air pollutants interacting directly with pollen. Data suggest an increasing effect of aeroallergens on allergic patients over this period, which may also imply a greater likelihood of the development of an allergic respiratory disease in sensitized subjects and exacerbation of symptomatic patients. There are a number of limitations that make predictions uncertain, and further and specifically designed studies are needed to clarify current effects and future scenarios. We recommend: More stress on pollen/spore exposure in the diagnosis and treatment guidelines of respiratory and allergic diseases; collection of aerobiological data in a structured way at the European level; creation, promotion and support of multidisciplinary research teams in this area; lobbying the European Union and other funders to finance this research. Pandemic influenza: human rights, ethics and duty to treat

The 2009 influenza A/H1N1 pandemic seems to be only moderately severe. In the future, a pandemic influenza with high lethality, such as the Spanish influenza in 1918,1919 or even worse, may emerge. In this kind of scenario, lethality rates ranging roughly from 2% to 30% have been proposed. Legal and ethical issues should be discussed before the incident. This article aims to highlight the legal, ethical and professional aspects that might be relevant to anaesthesiologists in the case of a high-lethality infectious disease such as a severe pandemic influenza. The epidemiology, the role of anaesthesiologists and possible threats to the profession and colleagueship within medical specialties relevant to anaesthesiologists are reviewed. During historical plague epidemics, some doctors have behaved like ,deserters'. However, during the Spanish influenza, physicians remained at their jobs, although many perished. In surveys, more than half of the health-care workers have reported their willingness to work in the case of severe pandemics. Physicians have the same human rights as all citizens: they have to be effectively protected against infectious disease. However, they have a duty to treat. Fair and responsible colleagueship among the diverse medical specialties should be promoted. Until disaster threatens humanity, volunteering to work during a pandemic might be the best way to ensure that physicians and other health-care workers stay at their workplace. Broad discussion in society is needed. [source]


Education not training: the challenge of developing professional autonomy

Abstract The aims of this paper are first, to differentiate between education and training, emphasizing the importance of the former in the professional education of occupational therapists; and second, to outline some of the possible threats to professional autonomy. A focus on training may result in a level of education that cannot sustain professional autonomy. However, the establishment of proscribed and detailed, nationally controlled educational standards may also limit a profession. The latter may occur when cost-containment is a major societal concern, focusing educational standards on training and measurable outcomes of professional practice. AUTONOMY AND AUTHENTICITY OF ENHANCED PERSONALITY TRAITS

ABSTRACT There is concern that the use of neuroenhancements to alter character traits undermines consumer's authenticity. But the meaning, scope and value of authenticity remain vague. However, the majority of contemporary autonomy accounts ground individual autonomy on a notion of authenticity. So if neuroenhancements diminish an agent's authenticity, they may undermine his autonomy. This paper clarifies the relation between autonomy, authenticity and possible threats by neuroenhancements. We present six neuroenhancement scenarios and analyse how autonomy accounts evaluate them. Some cases are considered differently by criminal courts; we demonstrate where academic autonomy theories and legal reasoning diverge and ascertain whether courts should reconsider their concept of autonomy. We argue that authenticity is not an appropriate condition for autonomy and that new enhancement technologies pose no unique threats to personal autonomy. [source]
