Relationship between tooth contacts in the retruded contact position and mandibular positioning during retrusion

summary, We conducted a series of studies with the purpose to investigate the locations of tooth contacts in the retruded contact position (RCP) and to discuss their significance in the stomatognathic system. In the present study, the relationship between the locations of RCP contacts and mandibular positioning during retrusion was examined. Thirty dentists and clinical residents were selected as subjects. One specialist in prosthetic dentistry examined each subject for the location of the RCP contacts. The mandibular positioning during retrusion was measured using a mandibular movement analysis system with six degrees of freedom. Originally programmed software was developed. Five reference points were selected: the central lower incisor (point I), the first molars on both sides (points RM and LM) and the condyles on both sides (points RC and LC). Tooth contact was observed most frequently at the second molar, followed by the first premolar. Points I, RM and LM all moved in an inferior-posterior direction, whereas points RC and LC moved in various directions ranging from superior-posterior to inferior-posterior. When the subjects were divided into two groups according to the most anterior tooth of occlusion in the RCP, the condylar positioning tended to be more superior in the group with molar contact than that with premolar contact. These results suggest that the locations of RCP contacts could be an important factor in jaw guidance during retrusion. [source]


The Hypothesis of Incommensurability and Multicultural Education

This article describes the logical and rhetorical grounds for a multicultural pedagogy that teaches students the knowledge and skills needed to interact creatively in the public realm betwixt and between cultures. I begin by discussing the notion of incommensurability. I contend that this hypothesis was intended to perform a particular rhetorical task and that the assumption that it is descriptive of a condition to which intercultural interactions are necessarily subjected is an unwarranted extension of the hypothesis as originally conceived. After discussing the hypothetical nature of the notion of incommensurability and its critical role within the discourse of the human sciences, the article examines the usefulness of utopian narratives as examples of incommensurable systems that can be put to pedagogical work. I argue that the comparative study of utopian narratives can provide insight into possible means of creating passageways that lead not from one bounded system to another, but rather to mutually generated and generative pluralistic public cultures in which new norms can be articulated, shared and potentially legitimised. What is crucial to the point I am trying to make is that ,incommensurability' was initially posed as a hypothesis that, while impossible to prove, still served a critical discursive or rhetorical function. This function is one that it can still serve and in an important educational manner, outside the discourse of the human sciences, within a larger, increasingly multicultural and global society. Changes in Nasal Cavity Dimensions in Children and Adults by Gender and Age,

Abstract Objective: The aim of the study was to establish the dynamics of changes in the intranasal spaces of children and adults by gender and age. Materials and methods: Each side of the nasal cavity was evaluated separately in 366 healthy subjects 9 to 74 years old. The following acoustic rhinometry parameters were analyzed: 1) I-C, distance between the isthmus nasi (I) and the head of the inferior turbinate (C); 2) CA-I, cross-sectional area at the isthmus nasi; 3) CA-C, at the head of the inferior turbinate; and 4) CA-F, the highest point on the rhinometric curve between points I and C. Results: Before age 11 years, the intranasal spaces were slightly larger in girls than in boys. After age 11 years the nasal parameters were larger in boys than in girls. The growth rates before age 17 years were as follows: I-C: 0.073 cm/yr, 0.135 cm/yr, CA-F: 0.055 cm2/yr, 0.133 cm2/yr (P < .00001), and CA-C: 0.010 cm2/yr, 0.034 cm2/yr (P < .02) in girls and boys, respectively. In subjects older than 16 years, the mean values of I-C were 1.707 cm, 1.934 cm (P < .0001), and of CA-C, 0.493 cm2, 0.611 cm2 (P < .0001) in women and men, respectively, and changed slightly over the year. Conclusions: The parameters of intranasal spaces depend on age and gender. The dynamics of the changes is greater in boys than in girls and usually the growth is completed by the age of 16. After this age, nasal cavities are bigger in men than in women. [source]
