Selected AbstractsSEASONAL VARIATIONS IN PHYTOPLANKTON COMMUNITIES OF AN EPHEMERAL POND SYSTEM IN SOUTHEASTERN VIRGINIAJOURNAL OF PHYCOLOGY, Issue 2000M.R. Kokolis The Grafton Ponds Natural Area is a 151 hectare preserve in York County, Virginia, approximately 56km north of the City of Norfolk. The preserve contains over 40 ephemeral ponds. These ponds which are filled seasonally by precipitation and groundwater discharge, are typically wet from late fall through late spring or early summer. Pond size varies from 0.1 to 2 ha, and depths range from 4 cm to 3 meters. The first phase of this study was to examine the physical and chemical characteristics of five of these ponds, including pond size and depth, inundation period, water temperature, pH, and phosphate and ammonium concentrations. The second phase, which is currently underway, is to examine the phytoplankton assemblages, relating differences in the phytoplankton populations to the varying physical and chemical characteristics of the ponds. To date, analysis indicates Chlorophytes and Cyanobacteria as dominant groups in the winter and spring with diatoms becoming more abundant in the late summer and fall. Periodic Dinoflagellate blooms also occur. Analysis also indicates rapid turnover of species from month to month. [source] Transient storage and downstream solute transport in nested stream reaches affected by beaver damsHYDROLOGICAL PROCESSES, Issue 17 2009Li Jin Abstract Transient storage constitutes a key element in the hydrologic cycle of watersheds. Both in-channel slow moving water (dead zones) and hyporheic zones can contribute to transient storage, which retains water and solutes, increases residence time and influences solute transport in streams. Beaver dams and other in-stream obstructions throughout low-order streams attenuate streamflow and provide dead zone storage in pools. In this article, we report the results of four tracer tests in nested stream reaches in Cherry Creek (Wyoming, USA) covering ,2·5 km of stream length to explore how the degree of beaver dam obstructions and their impoundments influence water transient storage and downstream solute transport in low-order streams in the Rocky Mountain region of the American West. Travel-time parameters for the tracer tests increased linearly with beaver dam number (N) and pond size (V). Linear regression of the travel time to the peak concentration (Tp), the leading (Tl) and tailing edge (Tt) of the dye cloud and the duration of the dye cloud (Td) versus N and V were all significant (R2 = 0·99). Slopes of the linear regressions of Tt versus N and V, were three times larger than those for Tl, suggesting that longer residence times may be caused, in part, by transient storage in the stream system. One-dimensional transport with inflow and storage (OTIS) modelled cross-sectional area of transient storage zone (As) and dispersion coefficients (D) increased linearly with N and V and reach length. Two transient storage metrics, Fmean and , also showed a general increase with N and V, although the relationship was not as strong. This suggests that in-channel dead zones associated with beaver dams provide opportunities for generating transient water storage. The linear relationship between dispersion coefficient and reach length suggests the dispersion process might be analogous to the hydrodynamic dispersion in groundwater settings. [source] The interaction of multiple environmental stressors affects adaptation to a novel habitat in the natterjack toad Bufo calamitaJOURNAL OF EVOLUTIONARY BIOLOGY, Issue 11 2009B. ROGELL Abstract The potential to adapt to novel environmental conditions is a key area of interest for evolutionary biology. However, the role of multiple selection pressures on adaptive responses has rarely been investigated in natural populations. In Sweden, the natterjack toad Bufo calamita inhabits two separate distribution areas, one in southernmost Sweden and one on the west coast. We characterized the larval habitat in terms of pond size and salinity in the two areas, and found that the western populations are more affected by both desiccation risk and pond salinity than the southern populations. In a common garden experiment manipulating salinity and temperature, we found that toads from the west coast populations were locally adapted to shorter pond duration as indicated by their higher development and growth rates. However, despite being subjected to higher salinity stress in nature, west coast toads had a poorer performance in saline treatments. We found that survival in the saline treatments in the west coast populations was positively affected by larger body mass and longer larval period. Furthermore, we found negative genetic correlations between body mass and growth rate and their plastic responses to salinity. These results implicate that the occurrence of multiple environmental stressors needs to be accounted for when assessing the adaptive potential of organisms and suggest that genetic correlations may play a role in constraining adaptation of natural populations. [source] Phenotypic plasticity of anuran larvae: environmental variables influence body shape and oral morphology in Rana temporaria tadpolesJOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY, Issue 2 2002Miguel Vences Abstract Environmental variables shaped the morphology of tadpoles of the common frog, Rana temporaria, in various ways at the Pyrenean locality Circo de Piedrafita. Examining only specimens in similar developmental stages, those from small ponds (with higher temperature and higher tadpole density) had lower growth rates, lower relative tail height, lower relative body width and fewer labial keratodonts and keratodont rows. The variation in keratodonts may have been caused by heterochrony related to the slower growth rate. The number of lingual papillae also differed between ponds but was not related to pond size. Higher predator densities caused a higher percentage of damaged tails and a lower relative tail length in specimens with apparently intact tails, probably as a result of incomplete regeneration after mutilations earlier in development. [source] Pond characteristics as determinants of species diversity and community composition in desert batsANIMAL CONSERVATION, Issue 5 2010O. Razgour Abstract Although water availability is known to affect landscape-scale patterns of wildlife diversity and distribution in arid environments, little is known about the microhabitat characteristics that shape the local-scale distribution of desert bats. We examined the relative importance of pond microhabitat characteristics for the conservation of bats, and hypothesized that in arid environments, patterns of bat diversity and community composition relate to the size of the pond and its hydroperiod (the number of months a pond holds water), a term we use to distinguish between permanent, semi-permanent and temporary ponds. We combined acoustic monitoring with video recording and an experimental approach to study bat activity over natural ponds in the Negev Desert, Israel. We found that both within and between ponds bat species richness and activity significantly increased with pond size. An experimental reduction of pond size led to a significant reduction in bat species richness and activity and affected the bat community composition. In contrast to pond size, pond hydroperiod did not affect bat diversity, as temporary ponds had equivalent levels of bat species richness and activity to permanent ponds. However, hydroperiod did couple with pond size to affect the bat community composition, whereby non-desert bat species that have a higher frequency of drinking were associated with larger and more permanent ponds. Our results highlight the importance of larger temporary ponds (ponds over 15 m in length and 0.5 m in depth) for the conservation of biodiversity in arid environments. [source] Impact of weather on off-flavour episodes at a Louisiana commercial catfish farmAQUACULTURE RESEARCH, Issue 5 2009Barry K Hurlburt Abstract The catfish aquaculture industry is hampered by off-flavour events that affect timely fish sales. In this study, weather data were correlated with geosmin and 2-methylisoborneol (2-MIB) levels in 21 commercial pond's water samples. Samples were collected weekly for 44 weeks. The off-flavour compounds, geosmin and 2-MIB, were quantified using gas chromatography,mass spectrometry. Weather data were collected near the catfish farm and included maximum and minimum air temperature, rainfall, average wind velocity, maximum and minimum humidity, and maximum and minimum soil temperature. Geosmin was weakly and positively correlated with air and soil temperatures, and weakly and negatively correlated with wind velocity. 2-MIB was strongly and positively correlated with air and soil temperatures, moderately and negatively correlated with wind velocity, and weakly and positively correlated with maximum humidity. There were no bivariate relationships between rainfall, minimum humidity or pond size, and levels of either off-flavour compound. Using logistic regression, the best predictors for off-flavour status based on geosmin levels included minimum soil temperature, rainfall and minimum humidity. The best predictors for off-flavour status based on 2-MIB levels included minimum soil temperature and average wind velocity. Soil temperature and rainfall were risk factors for off-flavour, while humidity and wind velocity were protective factors. [source] Pond attributes influence competitive interactions between tadpoles and mosquito larvaeAUSTRAL ECOLOGY, Issue 4 2002Allie Mokany Abstract Tadpoles and mosquito larvae often coexist in natural freshwater bodies. We studied competitive interactions between: (i) tadpoles of the striped marsh frog (Limnodynastes peronii) and larvae of the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus; and (ii) tadpoles of the common eastern froglet (Crinia signifera) and larvae of the mosquito Aedes australis. These two sets of taxa occur in natural water bodies in the Sydney region. Laboratory trials revealed competition between mosquito larvae and tadpoles in both systems. For example, mosquitoes displayed reduced rates of survival, growth and development, and smaller size at metamorphosis, when they were raised with tadpoles. The intensity of competitive suppression was influenced by attributes such as pond size (and hence, larval density), the location of food (on the water surface vs the substrate), and the extent of opportunities for direct physical interactions between the two competing organisms. These effects differed between the two study systems, suggesting that the mechanisms of suppression also differed. Limnodynastes peronii tadpoles suppressed C. quinquefasciatus even when the two types of organisms were separated by a physical partition, suggesting that chemical or microbiological cues may be responsible. Pond attributes also affected the impact of C. signifera tadpoles on Aedes larvae, but (unlike the Limnodynastes,Culex system) these effects disappeared when densities were lowered or when the tadpoles and mosquito larvae were physically separated. Thus, direct physical interactions may suppress mosquitoes in the Crinia,Aedes system. Our results suggest that tadpoles suppress the viability of larval mosquitoes by multiple pathways. [source] Economic Analysis of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Production in TanzaniaJOURNAL OF THE WORLD AQUACULTURE SOCIETY, Issue 4 2006Aloyce R Kaliba In Tanzania, Nile tilapia culture is a promising aquaculture enterprise. Information on production costs could assist fish farmers in economic and financial planning. Economic profitability of small-scale Nile tilapia production in Tanzania is analyzed using a model that simulates individual fish growth and takes into account fish population dynamics in the pond. The results suggest that the current practiced mixed-sex tilapia culture without predation is not economically sustainable. Extension efforts should be geared toward developing a Nile tilapia production system that is based on a hand-sexed all-male tilapia. Meanwhile catfish can be introduced in ponds to control overcrowding in mixed-sex tilapia culture without predation. Studies to determine optimal pond sizes, availability of feed, and a quality fingerling supply chain are also fundamental for developing a sustainable Nile tilapia production system in Tanzania. Under improved Nile tilapia production systems, returns are high enough to justify investment through borrowed capital from formal institutions. [source] |
