The highly specialized vocal tract of the male Mongolian gazelle (Procapra gutturosa Pallas, 1777 , Mammalia, Bovidae)

Abstract The entire head and neck of a wild adult male Mongolian gazelle (Procapra gutturosa) was dissected with special reference to its enlarged larynx. Two additional adult male specimens taken from the wild were analysed by computer tomography. The sternomandibularis, omohyoideus, thyrohyoideus and hyoepiglotticus muscles are particularly enlarged and improve laryngeal suspension and stabilization. The epiglottis is exceptionally large. A permanent laryngeal descent is associated with the evolution of an unpaired palatinal pharyngeal pouch. A certain momentary descent seems to occur during vocalization. The high lateral walls of the thyroid cartilage are ventrally connected by a broad keel. The large thyroarytenoid muscle is divided into two portions: a rostral ventricularis and a caudal vocalis muscle. A paired lateral laryngeal ventricle projects between these two muscles. The massive vocal fold is large and lacks any rostrally directed flexible structures. It is supported by a large cymbal-like fibroelastic pad. Vocal tract length was measured in the course of dissection and in computer tomographic images. Two representative spectrograms, one of an adult male and one of a juvenile, recorded in the natural habitat of the Mongolian gazelle are presented. In the spectrograms, the centre frequency of the lowest band is about 500 Hz in the adult male and about 790 Hz in the juvenile. The low pitch of the adult male's call is ascribed to the evolutionary mass increase and elongation of the vocal folds. In the habitat of P. gutturosa a call with a low pitch and, thus, with an almost homogeneous directivity around the head of the vocalizing animal may be optimally suited for multidirectional advertisement calls during the rut. The signal range of an adult male's call in its natural habitat can therefore be expected to be larger than the high-pitched call of a juvenile. [source]


Development of pharyngeal arch arteries in early mouse embryo

Abstract The formation and transformation of the pharyngeal arch arteries in the mouse embryo, from 8.5 to 13 days of gestation (DG), was observed using scanning electron microscopy of vascular casts and graphic reconstruction of 1-µm serial epoxy-resin sections. Late in 8.5,9DG (12 somites), the paired ventral aortae were connected to the dorsal aortae via a loop anterior to the foregut which we call the ,primitive aortic arch', as in the chick embryo. The primitive aortic arch extended cranio-caudally to be transformed into the primitive internal carotid artery, which in turn gave rise to the primitive maxillary artery and the arteries supplying the brain. The second pharyngeal arch artery (PAA) appeared late in 9,9.5DG (16,17 somites), and the ventral aorta bent dorsolaterally to form the first PAA anterior to the first pharyngeal pouch by early in 9.5,10DG (21,23 somites). The third PAA appeared early in 9.5,10DG (21,23 somites), the fourth late in 9.5,10DG (27,29 somites), and the sixth at 10DG (31,34 somites). By 10.5DG (35,39 somites), the first and second PAAs had been transformed into other arteries, and the third, fourth and sixth PAAs had developed well, though the PAA system still exhibited bilateral symmetry. By 13DG, the right sixth PAA had disappeared, and the remaining PAAs formed an aortic-arch system that was almost of the adult type. [source]


Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thyroid gland showing marked ciliation suggestive of its pathogenesis

Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the thyroid gland is a rare tumor first described by Rhatigan et al. in 1977. Its pathogenesis is still controversial. With regard to its most likely origin, some authors have suggested that it arises directly from follicular epithelium whereas others have proposed that it arises from ultimobranchial body (diverticulum from the fourth pharyngeal pouch) remnants, also known as solid cell nests (SCN). Herein is reported a unique case of thyroid mucoepidermoid carcinoma. The patient, a 67-year-old man, presented with a non-tender thyroid mass and vocal cord fixation. The tumor was poorly defined, necessitating subtotal thyroidectomy with composite resection of the adjacent structures. Pathologically, the tumor cells had characteristics of mucoepidermoid carcinoma, along with layers of columnar cells showing marked ciliation resembling respiratory-type epithelium, suggesting that this rare tumor had originated from SCN. p63 immunopositivity in the tumor provided additional evidence for the pathogenesis. Endoscopic stapling for pharyngeal pouch: does it make the cut?

Background: Endoscopic stapling to treat pharyngeal pouch is a relatively new technique with the potential to reduce the morbidity associated with the open approach for pharyngeal pouch. Despite enthusiasm for the endoscopic approach there have been no series reported in Australia, and descriptions of outcomes and benefits are currently anecdotal. The aim of the present study was to determine the outcome associated with endoscopic stapling of pharyngeal pouch in an Australian setting. Methods: All patients admitted for endoscopic stapling for a pharyngeal pouch between 1998 and 2002 by surgeons from the Adelaide and Flinders Universities were identified, and their medical records were reviewed for clinical and operative details. All patients were interviewed by telephone using a structured questionnaire to determine symptom resolution and patient satisfaction. The Likert scale was used to assess the impact of preoperative and postoperative symptoms upon quality of life. Results: A total of 31 patients were identified. The mean age of the group was 75 years (range: 35,91 years) and half the patients had an American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status score of 3 or greater. In four patients the procedure was abandoned; (for three because of inability to pass the diverticuloscope and for one because the pouch was too small). Standard open surgery was undertaken in these patients. Of the 27 procedures completed endoscopically, interview follow up was obtained in 23, at a mean follow up of 17 months (range: 2,68 months). Outcome was very good or excellent in 21 (91%), with significant symptom resolution, reduction in Likert scores and high patient satisfaction. Three patients had previously had pouch surgery and endoscopic stapling was straightforward in these patients. Recurrence of a symptomatic pouch occurred in three patients. There was no significant morbidity related to the procedure. Conclusions: The early experience of endoscopic stapling for pharyngeal pouch in Adelaide is encouraging. The procedure achieves excellent control of symptoms and can be undertaken with minimal morbidity. Recurrence may be a problem, although repeat endoscopic stapling can be undertaken without difficulty. [source]


Microlaryngoscopic repair of iatrogenic pharyngeal pouch perforations: Treatment of choice?

Background. Endoscopic stapled diverticulostomy (ESD) has become the preferred technique for managing pharyngeal pouches. Iatrogenic perforation, created during stapling, is a rare but serious complication with significant morbidity and mortality. The conventional management in these instances is to convert it to an external procedure and excise the pouch. Methods. Iatrogenic perforations were noticed after stapling in 3 cases in our series of 73 patients who underwent ESD. They were repaired using microlaryngoscopic techniques. Results. All patients had an unremarkable postoperative course. Conclusions. Selected cases with iatrogenic perforations can be repaired primarily and observed with excellent outcome, obviating the need for an external pouch excision. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
