    Why Do Policy Makers Give (Permanent) Power to Policy Advisers?

    Using a simple game-theoretical model, this paper analyzes the role of policy advisers in the policy-making process. We show that policy makers are inclined to appoint advisers whose preferences coincide with their own preferences. Furthermore, we show that policy makers are biased towards erecting permanent advisory units. This result stems from the policy makers' desire to affect the actions of their successors. A permanent advisory unit induces future policy makers to act in accordance with the preferences of current policy makers. The policy-makers' bias towards erecting permanent advisory units may drive a wedge between actual policy outcomes and socially desired policy outcomes. [source]


    Permanent and Transitory Driving Forces in the Asian-Pacific Stock Markets

    This paper uses weekly data from November 1987 through May 1999 to examine whether U.S. or the Japan stock market (or both) is the main driving force behind major movements in eleven emerging Asian-Pacific stock markets. We find a robust cointegrating relation linking each of the emerging market with the two matured markets of the U.S. and Japan. The results also show that the U.S., rather than Japan, is the main permanent force driving the equilibrium relations across all Asian-Pacific markets. In contrast, the effect of the Japanese market on the Asian-Pacific region is only transitory. Therefore, strategic asset portfolios in the Asian-Pacific region should include Japanese stocks to diversify any country specific risks. As to U.S. investors, the persistent influence of the U.S. market may limit long-run diversification gains from Asian-Pacific stocks. [source]


    Achieving Permanent Left Ventricular Pacing,Options and Choice

    Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) requires permanent left ventricular (LV) pacing. Coronary sinus (CS) lead placement is the first line clinical approach but can be difficult or impossible; may suffer from a high LV pacing threshold, phrenic nerve stimulation, and dislodgement; and produces epicardial LV pacing, which is less physiological and hemodynamically effective and potentially more proarrhythmic than endocardial LV pacing. CS leads can usually be extracted with direct traction but may require use of extraction sheaths. Half of CS side branches previously used for lead placement may be unusable for the same purpose after successful lead extraction, and 30% of CS lead reimplantation attempts may fail due to exhaustion of side branches. Surgical epicardial LV lead placement is the more invasive second line approach, produces epicardial LV pacing, and has a lead failure rate of ,15% in 5 years. Transseptal endocardial LV lead placement is the third line approach, can be difficult to achieve, but produces endocardial LV pacing. The major concern with transseptal endocardial LV leads is systemic thromboembolism, but the risk is unknown and oral anticoagulation is advised. Among the new CRT recipients in the United States and Western Europe between 2003 and 2007, 22,798 patients may require CS lead revisions, 9,119 patients may have no usable side branches for CS lead replacement, and 1,800 patients may require surgical epicardial LV lead revision in the next 5 years. The CRT community should actively explore and develop alternative approaches to LV pacing to meet this anticipated clinical demand. [source]

    Strokes in paroxysmal atrial fibrillation have more favorable outcome than in permanent atrial fibrillation

    Background,,, Permanent (ptAF) and paroxysmal (pxAF) atrial fibrillation carry similar risk of ischemic stroke (IS). Objective,,, Our aim was to compare the course of IS due to ptAF and pxAF. Methods,,, A prospective, single-center study was conducted in patients with AF and acute IS with 6-month follow-up. Results,,, We included 178 patients: 70 (39%) with pxAF and 108 (61%) with ptAF. Compared with patients with ptAF, patients with pxAF more often presented with subcortical, mainly lacunar strokes (21% vs 8%, P = 0.01) and were less frequently dependent at discharge (16% vs 42%, P < 0.001) and after 6 months (16% vs 20%, P < 0.001). Strokes in patients with pxAF were more frequently categorized as non-cardioembolic (35% vs 18%, P = 0.01). In the multivariate analysis, after adjustment for confounding factors (diabetes, chronic heart failure, high risk of thromboembolism and lack of prestroke anticoagulation), ptAF was an important risk factor for unfavorable short-term (OR 5.4; P < 0.01) and long-term outcomes (OR 2.6, P = 0.01) of IS. In all patients with AF, the occurrence of non-cardioembolic stroke was related to a reduced risk of dependence or death in short-term outcome (OR 0.4, P = 0.04) and marginally influenced long-term outcome (OR 0.49, P = 0.09). Conclusions,,, The present study suggests that, compared with patients with ptAF, ISs in patients with pxAF have better outcomes. [source]


    The Neutralizer: a self-configurable failure detector for minimizing distributed storage maintenance cost

    Abstract To achieve high data availability or reliability in an efficient manner, distributed storage systems must detect whether an observed node failure is permanent or transient, and if necessary, generate replicas to restore the desired level of replication. Given the unpredictability of network dynamics, however, distinguishing permanent and transient failures is extremely difficult. Though timeout-based detectors can be used to avoid mistaking transient failures as permanent failures, it is unknown how the timeout values should be selected to achieve a better tradeoff between detection latency and accuracy. In this paper, we address this fundamental tradeoff from several perspectives. First, we explore the impact of different timeout values on maintenance cost by examining the probability of their false positives and false negatives. Second, we propose a self-configurable failure detector called the Neutralizer based on the idea of counteracting false positives with false negatives. The Neutralizer could enable the system to maintain a desired replication level on average with the least amount of bandwidth. We conduct extensive simulations using real trace data from a widely deployed peer-to-peer system and synthetic traces based on PlanetLab and Microsoft PCs, showing a significant reduction in aggregate bandwidth usage after applying the Neutralizer (especially in an environment with a low average node availability).     Suitability of Golf Course Ponds for Amphibian Metamorphosis When Bullfrogs Are Removed

We examined the potential for amphibians to complete larval development in golf course ponds in the presence or absence of overwintered bullfrog tadpoles (Rana catesbeiana), which are frequently found in permanent, human-made ponds. We reared larval American toads (Bufo americanus), southern leopard frogs (R. sphenocephala), and spotted salamanders (Ambystoma maculatum) with 0 or 5 overwintered bullfrog tadpoles in field enclosures located in ponds on golf courses or in experimental wetlands at a reference site. Survival to metamorphosis of American toads, southern leopard frogs, and spotted salamanders was greater in ponds on golf courses than at reference sites. We attributed this increased survival to low abundance of insect predators in golf course ponds. The presence of overwintered bullfrogs, however, reduced the survival of American toads, southern leopard frogs, and spotted salamanders reared in golf course ponds, indicating that the suitability of the aquatic habitats for these species partly depended on the biotic community present. Our results suggest that ponds in human recreational areas should be managed by maintaining intermediate hydroperiods, which will reduce the presence of bullfrog tadpoles and predators, such as fish, and which may allow native amphibian assemblages to flourish. Examinamos el potencial de anfibios para completar el desarrollo larvario en lagos en campos de golf en presencia o ausencia de renacuajos de Rana catesbeiana, que frecuentemente son encontrados en charcas artificiales permanentes. Criamos sapos (Bufo americanus), ranas (R. sphenocephala) y salamandras manchadas (Ambystoma maculatum) con cero o cinco renacuajos de R. catesbeiana en encierros localizados en charcas en campos de golf o en humedales experimentales en un sitio de referencia. La supervivencia hasta la metamorfosis de B. americanus, R. sphenocephala y A. maculatum fue mayor en los campos de golf que en los sitios de referencia. Atribuimos este incremento en la supervivencia a la baja abundancia de insectos depredadores en las charcas de los campos de golf. Sin embargo, la presencia de renacuajos de R. catesbeiana redujo la supervivencia de B. americanus, R. sphenocephala y A. maculatum en los campos de golf, indicando que el beneficio de los hábitats acuáticos para estas especies dependía parcialmente de la comunidad biótica presente.     Impact of Forest Fragmentation on Understory Plant Species Richness in Amazonia

    In Central Amazonia, 9 to 19 years after fragmentation, we recorded species richness and net seedling recruitment rate in forest fragments of 1, 10, and 100 ha and in continuous forest. In 1991 all seedlings 5,100 cm tall within permanent 1-m2 plots in fragments and continuous forest were counted and grouped into tree, liana, palm, and herb life-form classes. In 1993 we manually removed all seedlings that were <1 m tall from the permanent plots. Six years and 5 months later ( 1999 ), all new seedlings recruited into the plots were counted, grouped into different life forms, and classified into distinct morphospecies. The species richness of recruited tree, liana, herb, and palm seedlings was lower in forest fragments than in continuous forest, with the 1-ha fragment having the poorest species richness. The total number of recruited individuals was 40% less than that previously present for all life forms, except lianas. Liana recruitment was 7% to 500% higher than the original abundance in the forest fragments and continuous forest. In general, species similarity was higher among fragments than between fragments and continuous forest, with the 1-ha fragment being less similar. Species rank/abundance curves showed that continuous forest species in all life forms tended to disappear in forest fragments, whereas common species in forest fragments were absent from continuous forest. Overall, our results suggest that the life-form composition and structure of the regenerative plant pool in fragments were shifting toward a species-poor seedling community. Losses of understory species diversity, but especially of tree seedlings, threaten the maintenance of rainforest biodiversity and compromise future forest regeneration. Resumen: La fragmentación de las selvas tropicales afecta severamente a a los árboles de gran porte, sin embargo, su efecto sobre otros estadíos y formas de vida de las plantas es poco conocido. En la Amazonia central, de 9 a 19 años después de la fragmentación, se registró la riqueza de especies y la tasa neta de reclutamiento de plántulas en fragmentos de selva de 1, 10, y 100 ha y en selva contínua. En 1991, todas las plántulas de 5,100 cm de altura dentro de cuadrantes permanentes de 1-m2 en los fragmentos y en la selva contínua, fueron contadas y agrupadas en diferentes formas de vida: árboles, lianas, palmas y hierbas. En 1993 se removieron manualmente todas las plántulas <1 m de altura dentro de los cuadrantes. La riqueza de especies de plántulas reclutadas en todas las formas de vida fue menor en los fragmentos que en la selva contínua, con el fragmento de 1 ha presentando la menor riqueza de especies. El número total de individuos reclutados fue 40% menor que los previamente presentes para todas las formas de vida, excepto lianas. El reclutamiento de lianas fué de 7 a 500% mayor que la abundancia original en los fragmentos y en la selva contínua. En general la similitud de especies fué mayor entre fragmentos que entre fragmentos y selva contínua, con el fragmento de 1-ha siendo el menos similar. Las curvas de rango/abundancia de especies, mostraron que las especies de selva contínua en todas las formas de vida tendieron a desaparecer de los fragmentos, mientras que las especies comunes en los fragmentos estuvieron ausentes en la selva contínua.     Risk evaluation and type of treatment of multiple dental trauma episodes to permanent teeth

    Abstract , Studies have shown that some children and adolescents are effected only once with a dental trauma, while others seem to be accident-prone and suffer from multiple dental trauma episodes (MDTE). Studies have also shown that dental traumas mostly affect upper permanent and medial incisors. Less is known about treatment consequences related to teeth with repeated dental trauma episodes. The aim was therefore to evaluate the risk of MDTE to permanent teeth among children and adolescents by age and gender and to compare types of dental treatment modalities used for patients with one episode and those with MDTE and with single and repeated traumatized teeth. The study was based on a random sample of 83 Danish 6,18-year-old children and adolescents born in 1970 who suffered from dental trauma episodes. All patients were followed during a 12-year period (1976,1988). Forty-one of the patients were registered with MDTE with a range of 2,7 episodes and a mean of 2.9 episodes/patient (SD=1.1). The mean age at single and MDTE was 11.4 years (SD=3.6) and 8.6 years (SD=2.1), respectively. No significant differences were found between age at first episode and the number of MDTE per patient. The number of patients with MDTE was significantly higher among those who suffered their first trauma episode in the age interval 6,10 years than in the age interval 11,18 years (P<0.001). A survival analysis showed that the risk of sustaining another trauma episode increased by 14.9,30.3% when the first trauma occurred before the age of 11, compared to 0,7.4% after the age of 10. The risk of sustaining multiple injuries was 8.4 times higher when the first trauma episode occurred at 9 years of age, compared with those occurring at age 12. The survival analysis also showed that for every new trauma episode, the interval between them became closer. Forty-five per cent of the MDTE affected teeth had already sustained an injury. With an increased number of trauma episodes per patient followed an increase in the number of follow-ups, filling therapy, information and prosthetics, whereas the rates of endodontics, surgery, and consultations were unchanged or even decreased.     Direct and indirect time spent on care of dental trauma: a 2-year prospective study of children and adolescents

    Abstract , The aim was to account for the total time spent by professional care-givers (direct time) and by patients and companions engaged as support and help (indirect time) to treat and otherwise attend to children and adolescents with dental trauma to primary and permanent teeth. The study was based on a random sample of 192 children and adolescents with dental traumas reported to an insurance company and prospectively followed up by telephone interviews over a period of 2 years after the trauma episode. On average, direct time represented 16% of total time for all visits for dental trauma to permanent teeth and 11% for trauma to primary teeth. The most extensive type of indirect time was transport time, which took up 30% of the total time spent on injuries to permanent teeth and 36% for injuries to primary teeth. Multiple regression analysis of the impact of dental and demographic injury variables on the time variables showed that complicated trauma was associated with extended time, direct as well as indirect, for permanent and primary teeth injuries. Our estimate of the average relative increase in total time spent by patients and companions in cases of complicated injury to permanent teeth was 117% (95% confidence interval [CI], 52,211) for patients and 112% (95% CI, 42,217) for companions. For transport time a strong predictor was access to a dental clinic near the place of residence. Lack of access could extend the average transport time by 180% (95% CI, 80,335) for patients and 163% (95% CI, 67,317) for their companions in cases of injuries to primary teeth. [source]


    Successful Treatment of a Cosmetic Tattoo Using a Combination of Lasers

    Background. Cosmetic tattoos are becoming more popular and are often composed of several colors. Tattoo pigments containing ferric oxide and titanium dioxide can change to a blue-black color after exposure to Q-switched lasers that can be permanent. Objective. Using a patient who presented with rouge tattoos on the cheeks as an example, we describe a useful approach to laser treatment of cosmetic tattoos. Methods. Test areas were done with the Q-switched Nd:YAG at both 532 and 1064 nm and with the pulsed-dye laser at 595 nm. Results. Although an immediate blue-black color change occurred after treatment with the Nd:YAG at 532 and 1064 nm, sequential treatments at 1064 nm produced a near complete clearance of the tattoos. The pulsed-dye laser was used to remove subtle pink tones. Conclusion. Performing small test areas before complete treatment and using several laser wavelengths throughout the course of therapy are essential to the successful treatment of cosmetic tattoos. [source]


    Integrating species life-history traits and patterns of deforestation in amphibian conservation planning

    Abstract Aim, To identify priority areas for amphibian conservation in southeastern Brazil, by integrating species life-history traits and patterns of deforestation. Location, State of São Paulo, Brazil. Methods, We used the software Marxan to evaluate different scenarios of amphibian conservation planning. Our approach differs from previous methods by explicitly including two different landscape metrics; habitat split for species with aquatic larvae, and habitat loss for species with terrestrial development. We evaluated the effect of habitat requirements by classifying species breeding habitats in five categories (flowing water, still water permanent, still water temporary, bromeliad or bamboo, and terrestrial). We performed analyses using two scales, grid cells and watersheds and also considered nature preserves as protected areas. Results, We found contrasting patterns of deforestation between coastal and inland regions. Seventy-six grid cells and 14 watersheds are capable of representing each species at least once. When accounting for grid cells already protected in state and national parks and considering species habitat requirements we found 16 high-priority grid cells for species with one or two reproductive habitats, and only one cell representing species with four habitat requirements. Key areas for the conservation of species breeding in flowing and permanent still waters are concentrated in southern state, while those for amphibians breeding in temporary ponds are concentrated in central to eastern zones. Eastern highland zones are key areas for preserving species breeding terrestrially by direct or indirect development. Species breeding in bromeliads and bamboos are already well represented in protected areas. Main conclusions, Our results emphasize the need to integrate information on landscape configuration and species life-history traits to produce more ecologically relevant conservation strategies.     Neuronal plasticity: implications in epilepsy progression and management

    Abstract Epilepsy is a common neurological disease. A growing number of research studies provide evidence regarding the progressive neuronal damage induced by prolonged seizures or status epilepticus (SE), as well as recurrent brief seizures. Importantly, seizure is only one aspect of epilepsy. However, cognitive and behavioral deficits induced by progressive seizures or antiepileptic treatment can be detrimental to individual function. The neurobiology of epilepsy is poorly understood involving complex cellular and molecular mechanisms. The brain undergoes changes in its basic structure and function, e.g., neural plasticity with an increased susceptibility in neuronal synchronization and network circuit alterations. Some of these changes are transient, while others are permanent with an involvement of both glutamatergic and ,-aminobutyric acid (GABA)ergic systems. Recent data suggest that impaired neuronal plasticity may underlie the cognitive impairment and behavioral changes associated with epilepsy. Many neurologists recognize that the prevention or suppression of seizures by the use of antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) alone is insufficient without clear predictions of disease outcome. Hence, it is important to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying epileptogenesis because this may allow the development of innovative strategies to prevent or cure this condition. In addition, this realization would have significant impact in reducing the long-term adverse consequences of the disease, including neurocognitive and behavioral adverse effects.     Mineral soil surface crusts and wind and water erosion

    Abstract The ,rst few millimetres of soil largely control the soil's response to the eroding forces of wind and water. The tendency of soils to form surface seals and crusts in,uences the processes of wind and water erosion differently. For wind, dry particle size distribution and particle organization determine the shear strength and threshold wind velocity necessary to initiate particle movement. In loams and clay loams, seals and crusts decrease roughness but increase surface soil strength, generally decreasing wind erosion. Conversely, in sand and sandy loams, loose erodible sandy material may either deposit on the crust and is subject to erosion or it may disrupt the crust, accelerating the erosion process. For water erosion, particle size distribution and structure determine in,ltration rate, time to ponding, and energy required for soil particle detachment. Seals and crusts tend to decrease in,ltration rate and time to ponding thus increasing overland ,ow and soil erosion. This paper brie,y reviews how permanent and time-dependent soil properties in,uence surface seals and crusts and how these affect soil erosion by wind and water. The tendency of a soil to form a seal and crust depends to some degree on the time-dependent property of soil structural stability, which tends to increase with increasing clay content and smectitic mineralogy which are permanent properties. These permanent properties and their effect on structure are variable depending on dynamic properties of exchangeable sodium percentage and soil solution electrical conductivity. Antecedent water content prior to irrigation or rainfall, rate of wetting before an erosive event and aging, the time between wetting and an erosive event, greatly in,uence the response of soil structure to raindrop impact. The effect of these dynamic processes is further in,uenced by the static and dynamic properties of the soil. Weak structure will be less in,uenced by wetting rate than will a soil with strong structure. Process-based models of wind and water erosion need to consider the details of the interactions between soil static and dynamic properties and the dynamic processes that occur prior to erosive events.     Contrasting seasonal dynamics in fleas of the Siberian flying squirrel (Pteromys volans) in Finland

    Abstract 1.,The seasonal and spatial variation of the adult flea fauna (Siphonaptera) was examined in connection with live-trapping studies of the Siberian flying squirrel (Pteromys volans) in three study areas in southern Finland between 1997 and 2005. 2.,The numerically dominant flea species of the Siberian flying squirrel were Tarsopsylla octodecimdentata octodecimdentata and Ceratophyllus (Monopsyllus) indages indages (Ceratophyllidae); the latter being a host specialist of the Siberian flying squirrel. Tarsopsylla octodecimdentata, which also commonly occurs on the red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris), infected a large proportion of the host population throughout the winter, whereas C. indages occurred predominantly during the summer and autumn, being practically the only flea species in nests during the flying squirrels' breeding season and on juveniles still inhabiting their natal nest. 3.,The use of nest boxes by flying squirrels did not have any positive effects on flea populations, but it may have had a negative impact on T. octodecimdentata. 4.,The potentially vulnerable C. i. indages is a predictable, widespread component in the flea fauna of the Siberian flying squirrel at various spatial scales, and it is likely to occur in most of the permanent flying squirrel populations in Finland.     A Simple Test of Friedman's Permanent Income Hypothesis

    Translating the Ideal of Deliberative Democracy into Democratic Education: Pure Utopia?

    Abstract Is the idea that the self-determination of all citizens influences progress towards democracy not merely a dream that breaks itself against the hard historical reality of political societies? Is not the same fate reserved for all pedagogical innovations in democratic education that depend on this great dream? It is commonplace to assert this logic to demonstrate the inapplicability of the ideas of both democracy and of democratic education. Though this argument is prominent and recurring in the history of political and educative ideas, in response we can ask ourselves if the gap between the ideal and the reality is effectively insuperable and must be considered an incontestable fact. The double objective of this article is to determine explicitly the meaning and extent of this gap in the context of democracy and of education and to demonstrate that this gap is neither static nor permanent, but is susceptible to being narrowed, from generation to generation.     Kleptoplasty in an Antarctic dinoflagellate: caught in evolutionary transition?

    Summary Photosynthetic dinoflagellates contain a diverse collection of plastid types, a situation believed to have arisen from multiple endosymbiotic events. In addition, a number of heterotrophic (phagotrophic) dinoflagellates possess the ability to acquire chloroplasts temporarily by engulfing algae and retaining their chloroplasts in a functional state. These latter relationships typically last from a few days to weeks, at which point the chloroplasts lose function, are digested and replaced with newly acquired plastids. A novel and abundant dinoflagellate related to the icthyotoxic genera Karenia and Karlodinium was recently discovered by us in the Ross Sea, Antarctica. Sequencing of its plastid small subunit ribosomal gene indicated that it did not share evolutionary history with the plastids of Karenia or Karlodinium, but was closely related to the free-living haptophyte Phaeocystis antarctica, a species that often dominates phytoplankton blooms in the Ross Sea. Chloroplast uptake was observed to occur rapidly (within 2 days), with retention in cultures being long-lived (several months) but not permanent. The dinoflagellate was also incapable of growing indefinitely in continuous darkness with algae as prey. Our findings may indicate an emerging endosymbiotic event yielding a dinoflagellate that is presently neither purely phototrophic nor purely heterotrophic, but occupies a niche juxtaposed between these contrasting nutritional modes.     Effects of 4-nonylphenol and 4- tert -octylphenol on sex differentiation and vitellogenin induction in medaka (Oryzias latipes)

    Abstract Medaka (Oryzias latipes) were continuously exposed to various concentrations of two alkylphenols, 4-nonylphenol (NP) and 4- tert -octylphenol (OP), from fertilized eggs to 60 d posthatch. The effects on sexual differentiation and hepatic vitellogenin (VTG) induction in medaka were assessed to elucidate the lowest-observed-effect concentrations (LOECs) of NP and OP for these events during early life stages. The LOECs of NP and OP for these events were 11.6 and 11.4 ,g/L, respectively. These results suggest that NP and OP may have adverse effects at similar concentrations during early life stage in medaka. Additionally, we investigated whether the abnormal sex differentiation induced by these alkylphenols would be permanent or reversible once the medaka were returned to clean water. The appearance of the secondary sex characteristics reverted from female to male when fish were returned to clean water. However, gonadal histology showed that intersex gonads still existed, even after the fish were transferred to clean water for two months. These results suggest that the induced feminization of secondary sex characteristics in medaka exposed to alkylphenols during the stage of sexual differentiation may not always be permanent, but the gonadal alteration (testisova) may continue much longer.     Refractory Generalized Seizures: Response to Corpus Callosotomy and Vagal Nerve Stimulation

    Summary:,Purpose: The vagal nerve stimulator (VNS) and corpus callosotomy can reduce seizure frequency when seizures are refractory to medications. However, the efficacy and safety of these two procedures have not been compared. This study evaluates the two procedures for generalized seizures. Methods: All patients with refractory generalized seizures (generalized tonic,clonic, tonic, or atonic) who underwent a corpus callosotomy (anterior or complete) (n = 53) without other forms of epilepsy surgery and those who underwent VNS placement (n = 25) were evaluated for this study. Seizure response and procedure complications were evaluated. Results: For those with a corpus callosotomy and generalized tonic,clonic seizures (n = 50), 79.5% had ,50% decrease in the frequency of generalized tonic,clonic seizures, and 60% had ,80% seizure reduction. For those with a VNS and generalized tonic,clonic seizures (n = 21), 50% had ,50% seizure reduction, and 33% had ,80% seizure reduction. Tonic and atonic seizures decreased after either VNS or a corpus callosotomy. The complication rate for corpus callosotomy was higher (21% all complications, 3.8% permanent) than that for VNS (8%; none permanent), but complications for both corpus callosotomy and VNS were rarely permanent. Conclusions: Both corpus callosotomy and VNS are effective in reducing generalized seizures. Corpus callosotomy is associated with greater efficacy but higher risk for complications, although these were generally transient. [source]


    Home-Range Dynamics in a Solitary Subterranean Rodent

    Despite an important role of subterranean rodents as ecosystem engineers, their belowground mobility is poorly documented. It is supposed that their underground burrow systems, once established, are relatively stable because of high-energy costs of digging. We chose the silvery mole-rat, Heliophobius argenteocinereus (Bathyergidae, Rodentia) from mesic Afrotropics as a representative of solitary subterranean rodents to investigate how, and how fast these rodents process their established burrow systems. We combined radio-tracking of individual animals with subsequent mapping of their burrow systems, and we developed a new method for assessing the rate of burrowing. Mole-rats continuously rebuilt their burrow systems; they excavated approx. 0.7 m of new tunnels per day and backfilled on average 64% of all tunnels. On average, every 32 d they established a new nest. They often completely backfilled newly excavated peripheral burrows, while other parts of their burrow systems were more permanent. Their home-ranges were dynamic and continuously shifted in space. Burrow system processing continued even in the advanced dry season, when soil is difficult to work. [source]


    Triacylglycerol migration and bloom in filled chocolates: Effects of low-temperature storage

    Abstract This study investigated the effect of storage temperature on triacylglycerol (TAG) migration, visual fat bloom and taste of industrially produced milk chocolates with a hazelnut-based filling. The chocolates were stored for up to 10,months at 18,°C, either directly after production or with the inclusion of a variable time at ,20 or 4,°C immediately after production and prior to further storage at 18,°C. TAG migration from the filling through the chocolate shell was quantified by HPLC analysis of chocolate sampled from the chocolates' surface. Both [OOO/SOS] and [LOO/SOS] were used as markers for oil migration. Compared to storage at 18,°C only, chilling or freezing of the chocolates for part of the storage time was found to reduce the amount of TAG migration. Effects on diffusion, capillary transport and TAG immobilization during the thermal treatment can be raised as possible reasons for this decrease. Furthermore, storage at ,20,°C decreased oil migration during subsequent storage at 18,°C. This suggests a crystallization effect during the storage at ,20,°C, leading to permanent (micro)structural changes. Although a thermal treatment at 4,°C compared to ,20,°C was less effective in retarding TAG migration, storage at low positive temperatures immediately after production appears already beneficial in the prevention of visual fat bloom. Adverse effects of the thermal treatments on the chocolates' taste were not observed. [source]


    Glucocorticoid receptors in the basolateral nucleus of amygdala are required for postreactivation reconsolidation of auditory fear memory

    Abstract It is well known that initial consolidation requires de novo gene transcription and protein synthesis in order for memory to become stable. The consolidated memory again becomes labile and temporarily sensitive to disruption when retrieved, requiring a reconsolidation process to become permanent. Although it is well established that glucocorticoid receptors (GR) in the basolateral nucleus of amygdala (BLA) are required for consolidation of fear memory, little is known about their role in reconsolidation of fear memory. In the present study, we first examined the effect of a GR antagonist on postconditioning consolidation of auditory fear memory (AFM). Intra-BLA infusion of the GR antagonist RU486 0 h postconditioning impaired long-term AFM, leaving short-term AFM intact. RU486 had no effect if infusion was performed 6 h postconditioning. We then investigated the effect of the RU486 treatment on postretrieval reconsolidation of AFM. Severe amnesia took place when RU486 was infused into the BLA 0 h postretrieval (reactivation) of AFM, regardless of whether the retrieval was performed 1 day or 10 days postconditioning. RU486 produced no amnesia if the memory retrieval was omitted or if the drug was administered 6 h postretrieval. Treatment with RU486 0 h postretrieval produced no deficit in postretrieval short-term memory but impaired postretrieval long-term memory, and the amnesia exhibited no spontaneous recovery 6 days after retrieval. The present results provide strong evidence that glucocorticoid receptors in the BLA are required for reconsolidation as well as consolidation of AFM. [source]


    Intracellular pH homeostasis in the filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger

    Intracellular pH homeostasis in the filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger was measured in real time by 31P NMR during perfusion in the NMR tube of fungal biomass immobilized in Ca2+ -alginate beads. The fungus maintained constant cytoplasmic pH (pHcyt) and vacuolar pH (pHvac) values of 7.6 and 6.2, respectively, when the extracellular pH (pHex) was varied between 1.5 and 7.0 in the presence of citrate. Intracellular metabolism did not collapse until a ,pH over the cytoplasmic membrane of 6.6,6.7 was reached (pHex 0.7,0.8). Maintenance of these large pH differences was possible without increased respiration compared to pHex 5.8. Perfusion in the presence of various hexoses and pentoses (pHex 5.8) revealed that the magnitude of ,pH values over the cytoplasmic and vacuolar membrane could be linked to the carbon catabolite repressing properties of the carbon source. Also, larger ,pH values coincided with a higher degree of respiration and increased accumulation of polyphosphate. Addition of protonophore (carbonyl cyanide m -chlorophenylhydrazone, CCCP) to the perfusion buffer led to decreased ATP levels, increased respiration and a partial (1 µm CCCP), transient (2 µm CCCP) or permanent (10 µm CCCP) collapse of the vacuolar membrane ,pH. Nonlethal levels of the metabolic inhibitor azide (N3,, 0.1 mm) caused a transient decrease in pHcyt that was closely paralleled by a transient vacuolar acidification. Vacuolar H+ influx in response to cytoplasmic acidification, also observed during extreme medium acidification, indicates a role in pH homeostasis for this organelle. Finally, 31P NMR spectra of citric acid producing A. niger mycelium showed that despite a combination of low pHex (1.8) and a high acid-secreting capacity, pHcyt and pHvac values were still well maintained (pH 7.5 and 6.4, respectively).     Subtle top-down control of a freshwater meiofaunal assemblage by juvenile fish

    Summary 1. Top-down control of prey assemblages by fish predators has been clearly demonstrated in lakes (for zooplankton prey) and rivers (for macroinvertebrate prey). Fish predation can have a significant impact on the body size of prey assemblages; often large-bodied prey are reduced in abundance, and indirect facilitation of small-bodied prey occurs potentially initiating a trophic cascade. 2. Benthic communities in aquatic ecosystems also include a numerous and functionally important meiofaunal-sized component, but in freshwaters the impact of fish predation on meiofaunal assemblages is unknown. We used a laboratory microcosm study to explore the impact of juvenile fish predation on the abundance and size structure of a riverine meiofaunal assemblage. 3. The presence of fish in our microcosms had no significant effect on overall meiofaunal (temporary and permanent) abundance. However, for the Copepoda, we found the first evidence of top-down control of freshwater meiofaunal assemblages; in microcosms with juvenile fish, the abundance of large-bodied Copepoda was significantly reduced, whereas small-bodied Copepoda were significantly more abundant suggesting indirect facilitation. 4. We conclude that predation by juvenile fish can alter the structure of freshwater meiofaunal assemblages, although we do not yet know whether these relatively subtle changes are overwhelmed by large-scale events such as flow disturbances.     Effects of drying regime on microbial colonization and shredder preference in seasonal woodland wetlands

    Summary 1. Energy budgets of wetlands in temperate deciduous forests are dominated by terrestrially derived leaf litter that decays under different drying conditions depending on autumn precipitation. We compared decay rates and microbial colonization of maple leaves under different inundation schedules in a field experiment, and then conducted a laboratory study on shredder preference. In the field, litter bags either remained submerged (permanent), were moved to a dried part of the basin once and then returned (semi-permanent), or were alternated between wet and dry conditions for 8 weeks (temporary). 2. There was no difference in decay rates among treatments, but leaves incubated under permanent and semi-permanent conditions had higher fungal and bacterial biomass, and lower C : N ratios than those incubated under alternating drying and wetting conditions. 3. To determine the effects of these differences in litter nutritional quality on shredder preference, we conducted a laboratory preference test with larvae of leaf-shredding caddisflies that inhabit the wetland. Caddisflies spent twice as much time foraging on permanent and semi-permanent litter than on litter incubated under temporary conditions. 4. There is considerable variation among previous studies in how basin drying affects litter breakdown in wetlands, and no previous information on shredder preference. We found that frequent drying in a shallow wetland reduces the nutritional quality of leaf litter (lower microbial biomass and nitrogen content), and therefore preference by invertebrate shredders. These results suggest that inter-annual shifts in drying regime should alter detritus processing rates, and hence the mobilization of the energy and nutrients in leaf litter to the wetland food web.     Foraging tactics in alternative heterochronic salamander morphs: trophic quality of ponds matters more than water permanency

    Summary 1. In lentic freshwater habitats, the composition of animal assemblages shifts along a gradient from temporary to permanent basins. When habitats with different degrees of permanence are at the scale of the home range of species, they constitute alternatives in terms of energy acquisition through feeding. 2. In this context, previous studies showed an advantage of metamorphic over paedomorphic tiger salamanders (Ambystoma tigrinum) in temporary ponds which are only available to metamorphs. The aim of this study was to establish whether salamanders obtain similar benefits in ponds that do not differ in water permanence and whether salamanders shifted from detrimental to advantageous ponds. To this end, we determined the feeding habits, body condition and movement patterns of the two morphs in a complex of four permanent and four temporary ponds. 3. Consistent with previous studies, metamorphs consumed higher-quality diets than paedomorphs in term of energy intake. However, these differences occurred because metamorphs consumed fairy shrimp in a single temporary pond. Individual movement patterns confirmed that most of the metamorphs used different aquatic habitats both within and between years and that most of them moved from permanent ponds for breeding towards the most profitable temporary pond in terms of foraging. 4. These results indicate that habitat selection by salamanders is optimal in term of energy intake in metamorphs that use high quality ponds independently of hydroperiod. It seems that both spatial and temporal variation can influence the relative foraging success of each morph. [source]


    Real-time quadrupole mass spectrometer analysis of gas in borehole fluid samples acquired using the U-tube sampling methodology

    Abstract Sampling of fluids in deep boreholes is challenging because of the necessity of minimizing external contamination and maintaining sample integrity during recovery. The U-tube sampling methodology was developed to collect large volume, multiphase samples at in situ pressures. As a permanent or semi-permanent installation, the U-tube can be used for rapidly acquiring multiple samples or it may be installed for long-term monitoring applications. The U-tube was first deployed in Liberty County, TX to monitor crosswell CO2 injection as part of the Frio CO2 sequestration experiment. Analysis of gases (dissolved or separate phase) was performed in the field using a quadrupole mass spectrometer, which served as the basis for determining the arrival of the CO2 plume. The presence of oxygen and argon in elevated concentrations, along with reduced methane concentration, indicates sample alteration caused by the introduction of surface fluids during borehole completion. Despite producing the well to eliminate non-native fluids, measurements demonstrate that contamination persists until the immiscible CO2 injection swept formation fluid into the observation wellbore.     Measuring Monetary Policy in Germany: A Structural Vector Error Correction Approach

    Monetary policy; cointegration; structural VAR analysis Abstract. A structural vector error correction (SVEC) model is used to investigate several monetary policy issues. While being data-oriented the SVEC framework allows structural modeling of the short-run and long-run properties of the data. The statistical model is estimated with monthly German data for 1975,98 where a structural break is detected in 1984. After splitting the sample, three stable long-run relations are found in each subsample which can be interpreted in terms of a money-demand equation, a policy rule and a relation for real output, respectively. Since the cointegration restrictions imply a particular shape of the long-run covariance matrix this information can be used to distinguish between permanent and transitory innovations in the estimated system. Additional restrictions are introduced to identify a monetary policy shock. [source]


    A New Multilevel Ground Water Monitoring System Using Multichannel Tubing

    A new multilevel ground water monitoring system has been developed that uses custom-extruded flexible 1.6-inch (4.1 cm) outside-diameter (O.D.) multichannel HOPE tubing (referred to as Continuous Multichannel Tubing or CMT) to monitor as many as seven discrete zones within a single borehole in either unconsolidated sediments or bedrock. Prior to inserting the tubing in the borehole, ports are created that allow ground water to enter six outer pie-shaped channels (nominal diameter = 0.5 inch [1.3 cm]) and a central hexagonal center channel (nominal diameter = 0.4 inch [1 cm]) at different depths, facilitating the measurement of depth-discrete piezometric heads and the collection of depth-discrete ground water samples. Sand packs and annular seals between the various monitored zones can be installed using conventional tremie methods. Alternatively, bentonite packers and prepacked sand packs have been developed that are attached to the tubing at the ground surface, facilitating precise positioning of annular seals and sand packs. Inflatable rubber packers for permanent or temporary installations in bedrock aquifers are currently undergoing site trials. Hydraulic heads are measured with conventional water-level meters or electronic pressure transducers to generate vertical profiles of hydraulic head. Ground water samples are collected using peristaltic pumps, small-diameter bailers, inertial lift pumps, or small-diameter canister samplers. For monitoring hydrophobic organic compounds, the CMT tubing is susceptible to both positive and negative biases caused by sorption, desorption, and diffusion. These biases can be minimized by: (1) purging the channels prior to sampling, (2) collecting samples from separate 0.25-inch (0.64 cm) O.D. Teflon sampling tubing inserted to the bottom of each sampling channel, or (3) collecting the samples downhole using sampling devices positioned next to the intake ports. More than 1000 CMT multilevel wells have been installed in North America and Europe to depths up to 260 feet (79 m) below ground surface. These wells have been installed in boreholes created in unconsolidated sediments and bedrock using a wide range of drilling equipment, including sonic, air rotary, diamond-bit coring, hollow-stem auger, and direct push. This paper presents a discussion of three field trials of the system, demonstrating its versatility and illustrating the type of depth-discrete data that can be collected with the system. [source]
