Cyst Distribution and Hatching Pattern of Chirocephalus ruffoi (Crustacea, Anostraca) in an Experimental Undisturbed Pool

Abstract The pattern of cyst distribution in the absence of turbation and their hatching behaviour were studied in an outdoor artificial pool, where just differentiated adults of the anostracan Chirocephalus ruffoi (sex ratio 1:3) lived until it dried up. The horizontal and vertical distributions of cysts in the pool bed were determined. The comparison between cyst bank estimate (Mura, 2004) and the actual number of cysts counted in the pool bed revealed an estimate error of 20.9%. Resting eggs occurred only in the upper 2.5 cm thick soil sections and decreased within this section as depth increased. Peripheral areas of the pool contained significantly larger numbers of cysts than the central area. Multiway analysis on the results recorded in hatching success (nested ANOVA) revealed that the differences were significantly affected by initial soil conditions, treatment and vertical distribution of cysts. Among these factors, vertical distribution (sections nested in cores) was the most influential. Hatching success was significantly inversely related to depth. Differences in the timing of hatching depending on the above considered factors were also noted. A nearly synchronous hatching pattern was observed only for cysts from initially dry sediment of the uppermost layers. In all successively deeper layers, hatching showed multiple peaks and was increasingly delayed and erratic (already mentioned). ANCOVA within each of the experimental conditions revealed significant differences in hatching frequencies (time as covariate) depending on sediment depth. Evaluation of sympathetic vasoconstrictor response following nociceptive stimulation of latent myofascial trigger points in humans

Abstract Aim:, Myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) are a major cause of musculoskeletal pain. It has been reported that stimulation of a latent MTrP increases motor activity and facilitates muscle pain via activation of the sympathetic nervous system. However, the magnitude of the sympathetic vasoconstrictor response following stimulation of MTrP has not been studied in healthy volunteers. The aims of this study were to (1) evaluate the magnitude of the vasoconstrictor response following a nociceptive stimulation (intramuscular glutamate) of MTrPs and a breath-hold manoeuvre (activation of sympathetic outflow) and (2) assess whether the vasoconstrictor response can be further modulated by combining a nociceptive stimulation of MTrPs and breath-hold. Methods:, Fourteen healthy subjects were recruited in this study. This study consisted of four sessions (normal breath group as control, breath-hold group, glutamate MTrP injection group and glutamate MTrP injection + breath-hold group). Skin blood flow and skin temperature in both forearms were measured with laser Doppler flowmetry and infrared thermography, respectively, in each session (before the treatment, during the treatment and after the treatment). Results:, Glutamate injection into MTrPs decreased skin temperature and blood flow in the peripheral area. The magnitudes of the reduction were comparable to those induced by the breath-hold manoeuvre, which has been used to induce sympathetic vasoconstrictor response. Conclusion:, The combination of glutamate injection into latent MTrPs together with the breath-hold manoeuvre did not result in further decrease in skin temperature and blood flow, indicating that sympathetic vasoconstrictor activity is fully activated by nociceptive stimulation of MTrPs. Xeroderma pigmentosum with limited involvement of the UV-exposed areas: a case report

A 21-year-old woman with skin type IV, who had developed photophobia and brown, spotty, hyperpigmented lesions on her face from early childhood, presented to our center for treatment of her facial lesions. Examination on admission revealed numerous, freckle-like, hyperpigmented macules and actinic keratoses over the central part of the face, with sparing of the forehead, chin, and peripheral area (Fig. 1). The area involved was approximated to be around 2% of the total body surface. The dorsal parts of the hands showed no lesions (Fig. 2), but guttate hypomelanotic lesions were apparent on both forearms. Figure 1. Hands are devoid of any lesions Histologic examination of biopsies from four different facial lesions revealed them to be keratoacanthoma (1.5 × 2.5 cm ulcerative nodule on the right cheek), sclerosing basal cell epithelioma (nasal lesion), lentigo simplex, and hypertrophic actinic keratosis. Corneal clouding, conjunctival injection, loss of lashes, and atrophy of the lids were apparent on ophthalmologic examination. Other parts of the physical examination, including examination of the oral cavity, were nonsignificant. In addition, except for the presence of mild eczema in a sibling, the patient's family history regarding the presence of any similar problem and also any other important dermatologic or general disorder was negative. Topical superoxide dismutase reduces post-irradiation breast cancer fibrosis

Abstract Fibrosis following breast radiotherapy for mammary cancer is a frequent undesired effect with objective (esthetic) and subjective (pain) consequences. Forty-four patients with clinical radiofibrosis following conservative treatment of breast cancer were evaluated for the local antifibrosis effect of copper zinc superoxide dismutase [SOD(Cu/Zn)]. Extracted SOD(Cu/Zn) in a concentration of 3,600 units/mg was applied as ointment to the fibrotic affected area, b.i.d. for 90 days, in a total dose of 40 mg. The radiofibrosis intensity was scored on the basis of clinical criteria (pain and the fibrosis area) before and after SOD(Cu/Zn) treatment. SOD(Cu/Zn) was found to be effective in reducing radiation induced fibrosis by a lowering pain score in 36/39 patients and a decrease of the fibrotic area size in half cases, after 6 months. The intensity and changes of breast fibrosis were assessed also by mammography and, for the topographical distribution of subcutaneous temperature, by infrared thermography. Mammography density suggested decreased fibrosis in one third of patients. Thermography showed that fibrosis was accompanied by two zones clinically indistinctive: a central area with maximum thermal activity, called "Maximal Thermic zone" (MTZ) and a peripheral area with less thermal activity but higher than in the surrounding normal tissue, "Transitional Thermic Zone" (TTZ). Both MTZ and TTZ were significantly decreased in 36/44 patients after SOD(Cu/Zn) treatment. Clinical changes persisted all along the study. Treatment was well tolerated except for one case of local allergic reaction, and no important side effects. Molecular mechanisms involved are discussed. Further studies are running to confirm and explain these results. [source]


Glutamate levels and transport in cat (Felis catus) area 17 during cortical reorganization following binocular retinal lesions

Abstract Glutamate is known to play a crucial role in the topographic reorganization of visual cortex after the induction of binocular central retinal lesions. In this study we investigated the possible involvement of the glial high-affinity Na+/K+ -dependent glutamate transporters in cortical plasticity using western blotting and intracortical microdialysis. Basal extracellular glutamate levels and the re-uptake activity for glutamate have been determined by comparing the extracellular glutamate concentration before and during the blockage of glutamate removal from the synaptic cleft with the potent transporter inhibitor l - trans -pyrrolidine-3,4-dicarboxylic acid. In cats with central retinal lesions we observed increased basal extracellular glutamate concentrations together with a decreased re-uptake activity in non-deprived, peripheral area 17, compared with the sensory-deprived, central cortex of the same animal as well as the topographically matching regions of area 17 in normal subjects. Western blotting experiments revealed a parallel decrease in the expression level of the glial glutamate transporter proteins GLT-1 and GLAST in non-deprived cortex compared with sensory-deprived cortex of lesion cats and the corresponding regions of area 17 of normal subjects. This study shows that partial sensory deprivation of the visual cortex affects the removal of glutamate from the synaptic cleft and implicates a role for glial,neuronal interactions in adult brain plasticity. Pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis incidentally detected in a lobectomy specimen for a metastatic colon cancer

Pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis is a rare vascular proliferative disease of unknown etiology. The common clinical features are slowly progressive and finally fatal pulmonary hypertension. The clinical diagnosis is usually difficult. Because most reported cases are of autopsy, little is known about its incipient lesion and natural history. Presented herein is a case of pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis incidentally detected in a surgically resected lung for a metastatic colon cancer. The patient was a 60-year-old Japanese woman with a history of sigmoid colon cancer 3 years previously. The patient had undergone a right lower lobectomy for a metastatic tumor in the hilar region and a thoracoscopic tumorectomy of the peripheral area of the left upper lobe. Except for an episode of hemoptysis 2 weeks prior to the lung surgery, there were no other clinical symptoms characteristic of pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis. The non-tumor area of right lower lobe showed multiple foci of capillary proliferation affecting alveolar walls, interlobular septa and pleura associated with patchy hemorrhage. There was a minor degree of vascular and bronchial involvement by capillary proliferation. It is suggested this particular case is an incidentally detected clinically incipient stage of pulmonary capillary hemangiomatosis. Passive congestion secondary to metastatic colon cancer in the hilar region may have contributed to the pathogenesis of this lesion. [source]


Variations in Chemical Composition of Clay Minerals and Magnetic Susceptibility of Hydrothermally Altered Rocks in the Hishikari Epithermal Gold Deposit, SW Kyushu, Japan

Abstract Hydrothermal alteration, involving chiefly chlorite and illite, is extensively distributed within host rocks of the Pleistocene Hishikari Lower Andesites (HLA) and the Cretaceous Shimanto Supergroup (SSG) in the underground mining area of the Hishikari epithermal gold deposit, Kagoshima, Japan. Approximately 60% of the mineable auriferous quartz-adularia veins in the Honko vein system occur in sedimentary rocks of the SSG, whereas all the veins of the Yamada vein system occur in volcanic rocks of the HLA. Variations in the abundance and chemical composition of hydrothermal minerals and magnetic susceptibility of the hydrothermally altered rocks of the HLA and SSG were analyzed. In volcanic rocks of the HLA, hydrothermal minerals such as quartz, chlorite, adularia, illite, and pyrite replaced primary minerals. The amount of hydrothermal minerals in the volcanic rocks including chlorite, adularia, illite, and pyrite as well as the altered and/or replaced pyroxenes and plagioclase phenocrysts increases toward the veins in the Honko vein system. The vein-centered variation in mineral assemblage is pronounced within up to 25 m from the veins in the peripheral area of the Honko vein system, whereas it is not as apparent in the Yamada vein system. The hydrothermal minerals in sandstone of the SSG occur mainly as seams less than a few millimeters thick and are sporadically observed in halos along the veins and/or the seams. The alteration halos in sandstone of the SSG are restricted to within 1 m of the veins. In the peripheral area of the Honko vein system, chlorite in volcanic rocks is characterized by increasing in Al in its tetrahedral layer and the Fe/Fe + Mg ratio toward the veins, while illite in volcanic rocks has relatively low K and a restricted range of Fe/Fe + Mg ratios. Temperature estimates derived from chlorite geothermometry rise toward the veins within the volcanic rocks. The magnetic susceptibility of tuff breccia of the HLA varies from 21 to less than 0.01 × 10,3 SI within a span of 40 m from the veins and has significant variation relative to that of andesite (27,0.06 × 10,3 SI). The variation peripheral to the Honko vein system correlates with an increase in the abundance of hematite pseudomorphs after magnetite, the percentage of adularia and chlorite with high Fe/Fe + Mg ratios, and the degree of plagioclase alteration with decreasing distance to the veins. In contrast, sedimentary rocks of the SSG maintain a consistent magnetic susceptibility across the alteration zone, within a narrow range from 0.3 to 0.2 × 10,3 SI. Magnetic susceptibility of volcanic rocks of the HLA, especially tuff breccia, could serve as an effective exploration tool for identifying altered volcanic rocks. [source]


Regional specialization of the Ganglion cell density in the retina of the Ostrich (Struthio camelus)

ABSTRACT In this study, retinal whole-mount specimens were prepared and stained with 0.1% cresyl violet for the ganglion cell study in the Ostrich (Struthio camelus). The total number, distribution, and size of these cells were determined in different retinal regions. The mean total number of ganglion cells (three retinas) was 1 435 052 with an average density of 652 cells/mm2. The temporo , nasal area of the retina with high cell density were identified with the peak of 7525 cells/mm2 in the central area. The size of most ganglion cells ranged from 113,403 µm2, with smaller cells predominating along the temporo-nasal streak above the optic disc and larger cells comprising more of the peripheral regions. The average thickness of the retina was 196 µm. The central area was the thickest area (268.6 µm), whereas the peripheral area was the thinnest area. Thus, the specialization of ganglion cell densities, their sizes and the thickness of the retina support the notion that the conduction of visual information towards the brain from all regions of the retina is not uniform, and suggests that the temporo , nasal streak is the fine quality area for vision in ostriches. Pulmonary myoepithelial carcinoma resembling matrix-producing carcinoma of the breast: case report and review of the literature

Pulmonary myoepithelial carcinoma resembling matrix-producing carcinoma of the breast: case report and review of the literature. APMIS 2010; 118: 401,6. We report a case of pulmonary myoepithelial carcinoma with extensive myxohyaline stroma, resembling matrix-producing carcinoma of the breast. A 76-year-old Japanese man presented with a nodular lesion in the left lung (S8), and underwent partial resection of the left lower lobe. Microscopically, the resected tumor was relatively well circumscribed with central hypocellular myxohyaline and peripheral hypercellular area. In the central area, eosinophilic and clear polygonal cells proliferated in a cord-like or reticulated pattern with extensive myxohyaline stroma, while the peripheral area was composed of solid lobules of different shapes and sizes with occasional comedonecrosis. The tumor cells were markedly atypical with frequent mitotic figures. Vascular and lymphatic invasion was evident with regional lymph node metastasis. No squamous or glandular differentiation was evident in the tumor. Immunohistochemical staining implied myoepithelial differentiation. The patient developed multiple brain metastases, and died of the disease 11 months after the surgery. In this report, we discuss the histopathologic uniqueness of the present case together with a review of the literature. [source]

Abstract Dike swarms are generally ascribed to intrusion of mantle-source magma result from extension. Basic dike swarms around the Shanxi-Hebei-Inner Mogolia borders in the northern peripheral area of the North China Craton can be divided into five age groups according to isotopic dating: 1800,1700 Ma, 800,700 Ma, 230 Ma, 140,120 Ma, and 50,40 Ma. Geological, petrological and isotope geochemical features of the five groups is investigated in order to explore the variation of the mantle material composition in the concerned area with time. And the various extensional activities reflected by the five groups of dike swarms are compared with some important tectonic events within the North China Craton as well as around the world during the same period. Segmentation of FD-OCT images shows selective loss of inner retinal layers in patients with DM and no or early DR

Purpose Determine whether diabetes differentially affects specific retinal layers by comparing the thickness of six retinal layers in diabetic patients with no or minimal diabetic retinopathy (DR) to age- and gender-matched normal controls. Methods Forty-four patients with type 1 diabetes and no or minimal DR underwent full ophthalmic examination, stereoscopic fundus photographs and spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT). Following automated segmentation of intraretinal layers of the OCT images, mean thickness was calculated for 6 individual layers of the retina in the fovea, the pericentral area and the peripheral area of the central macula and compared to an age- and gender-matched control group. Results In type 1 diabetic patients with minimal DR, the retinal nerve fiber layer (p=0.00) and the ganglion cell/inner plexiform layer (p=0.02) were significantly thinner compared to age- and gender-matched controls. No other layers showed a significant difference. Conclusion Thinning of the total retina in diabetic patients with minimal DR relative to normal controls is due to a selective thinning of inner retinal layers and supports the concept that early DR includes a neuro-degenerative component. Small,Scale Entrepreneurship and Access to Capital in Peripheral Locations: An Empirical Analysis

This paper presents an analysis of a public assistance program for small,scale entrepreneurship in peripheral areas. Public assistance compensates for market inefficiencies where the decision rules of financial institutions discriminate against otherwise viable small firms in capital markets. Lending institutions perceive high risk in providing debt capital when little information is present. Using empirical data from Israel, the determinants of this risk are estimated and the role of location in creating this information asymmetry is stressed. These results empirically establish that (1) location matters in determining the risk profile of the firm, (2) locationally targeted programs can reduce the information asymmetries that make peripheral firms unattractive to lenders, and (3) these programs can also generate positive welfare effects. Finally, there is speculation on the potential role of ICT (information and communications technology) in increasing the visibility of small firms in remote locations and creating a more symmetrical flow of information. Where within a geographical range do species survive best?

Abstract., 1Opinions differ as to whether declining species are most likely to survive in central or peripheral parts of their distributions. The former pattern is likely to be driven by high extinction risks in peripheral areas; the latter by gradients of extinction risk. 2At a continental scale of analysis, the declining butterfly Euphydryas aurinia survived best in southern and eastern countries within Europe. This was statistically associated with geographical variation in agricultural intensification. At this scale of analysis, there was a gradient of survival, caused by a gradient of agricultural intensification. 3Within England and Wales, survival was greatest in population concentrations, or core areas; that is in 10-km grid squares that were surrounded by other 10-km grid squares that also contained populations of E. aurinia. In the English county of Dorset, populations were also most likely to be found in core areas; that is in habitat patches that were close to other populated habitat patches. 4In this system, there is support for two patterns of decline. At a coarse scale, there is a geographical gradient of habitat degradation, associated with agricultural intensification. But within a region where decline has taken place, populations survive best in core areas, where aggregations of habitat support viable metapopulation dynamics. 5Large-scale geographical patterns of decline towards the periphery (or other locations within) the distribution of a species do not negate the validity of conservation strategies based on core-margin population dynamic principles. Core areas within each country or region represent appropriate targets for conservation action. [source]


The use and application of Rose's theory of lesson drawing in peripheral areas of Scotland

Abstract This article looks at Rose's theory of lesson drawing and its possible use and application in social science research. It identifies the contingencies necessary for its application and also identifies how a lesson may be transferred between cases. The use and viability of Rose's theory of lesson drawing is evaluated. The lesson drawing approach would be appropriate to most comparative social science research. It lends itself to tourism research and the establishment of circumstances in which lessons can be imported or exported between regions or countries. Evaluation of processed bovine cancellous bone matrix seeded with syngenic osteoblasts in a critical size calvarial defect rat model

Abstract Introduction: Biologic bone substitutes may offer alternatives to bone grafting procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate a preformed bone substitute based on processed bovine cancellous bone (PBCB) with or without osteogenic cells in a critical size calvarial defect rat model. Methods: Discs of PBCB (Tutobone®) were seeded with second passage fibrin gel-immobilized syngenic osteoblasts (group A, n = 40). Cell-free matrices (group B, n = 28) and untreated defects (group C; n=28) served as controls. Specimens were explanted between day 0 and 4 months after implantation and were subjected to histological and morphometric evaluation. Results: At 1 month, bone formation was limited to small peripheral areas. At 2 and 4 months, significant bone formation, matrix resorption as well as integration of the implants was evident in groups A and B. In group C no significant regeneration of the defects was observed. Morphometric analysis did not disclose differences in bone formation in matrices from groups A and B. Carboxyfluorescine-Diacetate-Succinimidylester (CFDA) labeling demonstrated low survival rates of transplanted cells. Discussion: Osteoblasts seeded into PBCB matrix display a differentiated phenotype following a 14 days cell culture period. Lack of initial vascularization may explain the absence of added osteogenicity in constructs from group A in comparison to group B. PBCB is well integrated and represents even without osteogenic cells a promising biomaterial for reconstruction of critical size calvarial bone defects. [source]


Evaluation of the effectiveness of an early peripheral burning strategy in controlling wild fires in north-western Zimbabwe

Abstract A review of the occurrence of wild fires in Sengwa Wildlife Research Area (SWRA), Zimbabwe, is presented for the period 1965,1993. The effectiveness and desirability of early burning of peripheral areas introduced in 1979 are evaluated. More than 75% of wild fires occurred between July and October, 48.6% of which originated from communal lands. Early burning of peripheral areas led to significant reductions in extent of areas burnt, from annual mean areas of 115 km2 (1965,1978) to 11 km2 (1979,1993) because of effective control of fires, which originated from communal lands. Some areas did not burn at all after 1979, and the overall probability of burning dropped from 0.484 to 0.187. Whilst it may be desirable to keep fires out of SWRA in the short term, fuel build-ups increase the fire hazard resulting in negative consequences on biodiversity in the long term. Consideration should be given to combine peripheral burning with low-intensity prescribed burning of selected blocks to keep a semblance of natural fire regimes to ensure the maintenance of biodiversity while simultaneously reducing the fire-hazard. An integrated fire management plan should be put in place for SWRA. Résumé Ici est passée en revue l'occurrence de feux sauvages dans l'Aire de recherche sur la faune sauvage de Sengwa (SWRA), au Zimbabwe, pour la période 1965,1993. L'efficacité et l'opportunité des feux précoces des zones périphériques, introduits en 1979, sont aussi évaluées. Plus de 75% des feux sauvages avaient lieu entre juillet et octobre, dont 48,6% trouvaient leur origine dans des terres communales. Le brûlage précoce des zones périphériques a conduit à des réductions significatives des superficies brûlées, qui sont passées d'une moyenne annuelle de 115 km2 (1965,1978) à 11 km2 (1979,1993) grâce au contrôle efficace des feux qui commençaient dans les terres communales. Certaines zones n'avaient pas brûlé du tout depuis 1979, et la probabilité globale de brûler a chuté de 0,484 à 0,187. S'il est, à court terme, souhaitable de préserver la SWRA contre les feux, l'accumulation de matières combustibles augmente les risques de feux qui pourraient avoir, à long terme, des conséquences négatives sur la biodiversité. Il faudrait envisager de combiner les feux en périphérie avec des feux programmés, de faible intensité, de certains blocs sélectionnés, pour conserver un semblant de régime naturel de feux et ainsi garantir le maintien de la biodiversité tout en réduisant les risques de feux. Changes in vertebral structure during growth of reared rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum): a new approach using modelling of vertebral bone profiles

Abstract Severe bone resorption of the vertebral body in reared rainbow trout was thought to be a dysfunction in mineral balance induced by increased growth rate in unfavourable rearing conditions. To verify this assumption, we sampled market-sized trout (c. 250 g) from 20 fish farms with different rearing conditions. Growth rate was also studied by sampling trout reared in three different water temperatures from fry to market-size. Transverse sections of vertebrae were microradiographed, then digitized. Total bone area (Tt-B.Ar.) and bone profiles were obtained using BONE PROFILER 3.23 software and a mathematical model was developed to statistically compare bone profiles using 12 parameters in four vertebra regions. Tt-B.Ar. and bone profiles were found to vary with rearing conditions and growing temperatures, indicating obvious influences of these factors on bone remodelling. However, vertebral resorption was found to be a general phenomenon. In trout from 190 to 235 mm in length, vertebrae underwent important remodelling resulting in large resorption of the middle area, while the transition and peripheral areas showed an increase in bone deposition. Changes in vertebra architecture seem to be a good compromise between the need to mobilize stored minerals during growth while maintaining vertebral biomechanical properties. [source]


Expression of human ,-defensin -1, -2, and -3 in non-inflamed pseudocyst, mucoceles

Objectives and design:, The expressions of human beta defensin-1 (HBD-1), -2 (HBD-2) and -3 (HBD-3) in non-inflamed pseudocysts such as mucoceles were investigated immunohistochemically in this study. Materials and methods:, Mucocele specimens were obtained from 21 patients. The expression of HBDs was studied immunohistochemically by using antibodies directed against HBD-1, -2, and -3. Statistical analyses were carried out on serial sections stained with antibodies. Results:, Cells expressing HBDs were found in mucoceles. The expression of HBD-2 was observed in floating cells in all the specimens, whereas HBD-1 and HBD-3-expressing cells were detected in 93% and 73% of the mucoceles, respectively. The HBD-2 signal was the most intense and the HBD-3 signal intensity was weaker than that of HBD-1. HBDs were expressed in neutrophils and in other floating cells. Interestingly, the signal intensity and the population of positive cells located close to the centers of cysts were higher than those located in the peripheral areas of cysts. Conclusion:, The expression of HBDs was found even in non-inflamed pseudocysts such as mucoceles. These results suggest that an unknown mechanism not involved in biophylaxis for the expression of HBDs may exist. [source]

Using survey data from Irish and Israeli firms we examine the influence of public policy on the characteristics, location and innovation capability of high-tech firms. The innovation activities of Israeli firms in Israel are found to be much more locationally sensitive than that of Irish companies. Regional policy incentives, involving the dispersal of high-tech firms to peripheral areas of Ireland are therefore likely to have had little negative effect on firms' innovation capabilities. In Israel, however, inducing highly R&D intensive firms to locate away from the main metropolitan areas may be counter-productive. [source]

In each country two regions are selected: one peripheral but relatively dynamic and another accessible but relatively lagging. Public action conditions a range of processes and activities that continuously influence the intensity and direction of development. It can be part of the new factors of territorial development (NFTD) building up or hindering peripherality. The paper has the following aims: to identify what generic types of measures are believed to be more efficient for development; to analyse which measures (spatial or aspatial) are considered more important for development; to rank different NFTD according to preferences of interviewed experts; to identify whether there are differences between accessible and peripheral areas in policy preferences and needs; and to define which influences national contexts. Vascular Development and Differentiation During Human Liver Organogenesis

Abstract The vascular architecture of the human liver is established at the end of a complex embryological history. The hepatic primordium emerges at the 4th week and is in contact with two major venous systems of the fetal circulation: the vitelline veins and the umbilical veins. The fetal architecture of the afferent venous circulation of the liver is acquired between the 4th and the 6th week. At the end of this process, the portal vein is formed from several distinct segments of the vitelline veins; the portal sinus, deriving from the subhepatic intervitelline anastomosis, connects the umbilical vein, which is the predominant vessel of the fetal liver, to the portal system; the ductus venosus connects the portal sinus to the vena cava inferior. At birth, the umbilical vein and the ductus venosus collapse; the portal vein becomes the only afferent vein of the liver. The efferent venous vessels of the liver derive from the vitelline veins and are formed between the 4th and the 6th week. The hepatic artery forms at the 8th week; intrahepatic arterial branches progressively extend from the central to the peripheral areas of the liver between the 10th and the 15th week. Hepatic sinusoids appear very early, as soon as hepatic cords invade the septum transversum at the 4th week. They then progressively acquire their distinctive structural and functional characters, through a multistage process. Vascular development and differentiation during liver organogenesis is, therefore, a unique process; many of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved remain poorly understood. Histologic Heterogeneity of Masses at Percutaneous Breast Biopsy

The purpose of this study was to determine whether different histologic findings are obtained from different areas of breast masses seen on mammography when targeted on stereotactic breast biopsy. Twenty-one masses (mean size, 1.8 cm; range, 0.7,5.5 cm) underwent stereotactic biopsy using a 14-gauge directional vacuum-assisted biopsy probe (Mammotome, Biopsys/Ethicon Endo-Surgery, Cincinnati, OH). The central and peripheral areas of the mass were targeted and biopsied separately, and histologic findings from the targeted center and periphery were compared. Six of 21 masses (29%) were heterogeneous, yielding different histologic results from the targeted center and periphery. In 4 heterogeneous masses, which constituted 4 of 21 masses (19%) in this study, surgical biopsy was recommended on the basis of findings obtained from only the center (n = 2) or the periphery (n = 2). Stereotactic biopsy findings in these 4 masses were atypia in 3 and radial scar in 1; none of these 4 masses had carcinoma at surgery. In all 4 masses that proved to be malignant, the diagnosis of carcinoma was made in specimens obtained from both the targeted center and the periphery of the mass. Breast masses can be heterogeneous, yielding different histologic findings from different areas of the mass. Our data suggest that sampling part but not all of a mass may miss certain histologic components of the mass, but should not result in a failure to diagnose carcinoma. [source]

Abstract Microwave-induced corneal endothelial damage was reported to have a low threshold (2.6,W/kg), and vasoactive ophthalmologic medications lowered the threshold by a factor of 10,0.26,W/kg. In an attempt to confirm these observations, four adult male Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) under propofol anesthesia were exposed to pulsed microwaves in the far field of a 2.8,GHz signal (1.43,±,0.06,µs pulse width, 34,Hz pulse repetition frequency, 13.0,mW/cm2 spatial and temporal average, and 464,W/cm2 spatial and temporal peak (291,W/cm2 square wave equivalent) power densities). Corneal-specific absorption rate was 5.07,W/kg (0.39,W/kg/mW/cm2). The exposure resulted in a 1.0,1.2,°C increase in eyelid temperature. In Experiment I, exposures were 4,h/day, 3 days/week for 3 weeks (nine exposures and 36,h total). In Experiment II, these subjects were pretreated with 0.5% Timolol maleate and 0.005% Xalatan® followed by 3 or 7 4-h pulsed microwave exposures. Under ketamine,xylazine anesthesia, a non-contact specular microscope was used to obtain corneal endothelium images, corneal endothelial cell density, and pachymetry at the center and four peripheral areas of the cornea. Ophthalmologic measurements were done before and 7, 30, 90, and 180 days after exposures. Pulsed microwave exposure did not cause alterations in corneal endothelial cell density and corneal thickness with or without ophthalmologic drugs. Therefore, previously reported changes in the cornea exposed to pulsed microwaves were not confirmed at exposure levels that are more than an order of magnitude higher. Inner retinal ischaemia: current understanding and needs for further investigations

Abstract. Inner retinal ischaemia is involved in the pathogenesis of major vision-threatening diseases such as retinal vein thrombosis, diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity. However, the pathogenesis of inner retinal ischaemia has not been fully elucidated, which represents an impediment to the development and improvement of techniques to prevent and treat these diseases on a rational basis. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current knowledge of the pathophysiology of inner retinal ischaemia, including clinical, anatomical and physiological aspects of disease development. It is suggested that chronic inner retinal ischaemia caused by capillary occlusion may develop secondary to an increase in hydrostatic pressure in the vessels. Further knowledge of the pathophysiology of inner retinal ischaemia can be obtained by identifying the mechanisms that lead to increased hydrostatic pressure in the capillary bed and establishing the structural and functional basis for the different response patterns in the central and peripheral areas of the retina that develop secondary to this increased hydrostatic pressure. Further elucidation of these unknown response patterns requires both in vitro and in vivo studies of retinal vascular pathophysiology. It is conceivable that a more detailed knowledge of these response patterns may help in the design of new treatments for retinal ischaemia and its vision-threatening consequences. [source]


Immunohistochemical characterization of guided bone regeneration at a dehiscence-type defect using different barrier membranes: an experimental study in dogs

Abstract Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate immunohistochemically the pattern of guided bone regeneration (GBR) using different types of barrier membranes. Material and methods: Standardized buccal dehiscence defects were surgically created following implant bed preparation in 12 beagle dogs. Defects were randomly assigned to six different GBR procedures: a collagen-coated bone grafting material (BOC) in combination with either a native, three cross-linked, a titanium-reinforced collagen membrane, or expanded polytetrafluorethylene (ePTFE), or BOC alone. After 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, and 12 weeks of submerged healing, dissected blocks were processed for immunohistochemical (osteocalcin , OC, transglutaminase II , angiogenesis) and histomorphometrical analysis [e.g., bone-to-implant contact (BIC), area of new bone fill (BF)]. Results: In general, angiogenesis, OC antigen reactivity, and new bone formation mainly arose from open bone marrow spaces at the bottom of the defect and invaded the dehiscence areas along the implant surface and BOC. At 4 weeks, membranes supporting an early transmembraneous angiogenesis also exhibited some localized peripheral areas of new bone formation. However, significantly increasing BIC and BF values over time were observed in all groups. Membrane exposure after 10,12 weeks was associated with a loss of the supporting alveolar bone in the ePTFE group. Conclusion: Within the limits of the present study, it was concluded that (i) angiogenesis plays a crucial role in GBR and (ii) all membranes investigated supported bone regeneration on an equivalent level.
