Selected AbstractsDemographic and Psychosocial Features of Participants in Bondage and Discipline, "Sadomasochism" or Dominance and Submission (BDSM): Data from a National SurveyTHE JOURNAL OF SEXUAL MEDICINE, Issue 7 2008Juliet Richters ABSTRACT Introduction., People with sexual interests in bondage and discipline, "sadomasochism" or dominance and submission (BDSM) have been seen by many professionals as damaged or dangerous. Aim., To examine sexual behavior correlates of involvement in BDSM and test the hypothesis that BDSM is practiced by people with a history of sexual coercion, sexual difficulties, and/or psychological problems. Methods., In Australia in 2001,2002, a representative sample of 19,307 respondents aged 16,59 years was interviewed by telephone. Weighted data analysis used univariate logistic regression. Main Outcome Measures., Self-reported demographic and psychosocial factors; sexual behavior and identity; sexual difficulties. Results., In total, 1.8% of sexually active people (2.2% of men, 1.3% of women) said they had been involved in BDSM in the previous year. This was more common among gay/lesbian and bisexual people. People who had engaged in BDSM were more likely to have experienced oral sex and/or anal sex, to have had more than one partner in the past year, to have had sex with someone other than their regular partner, and to have: taken part in phone sex, visited an Internet sex site, viewed an X-rated (pornographic) film or video, used a sex toy, had group sex, or taken part in manual stimulation of the anus, fisting or rimming. However, they were no more likely to have been coerced into sexual activity, and were not significantly more likely to be unhappy or anxious,indeed, men who had engaged in BDSM scored significantly lower on a scale of psychological distress than other men. Engagement in BDSM was not significantly related to any sexual difficulties. Conclusion., Our findings support the idea that BDSM is simply a sexual interest or subculture attractive to a minority, and for most participants not a pathological symptom of past abuse or difficulty with "normal" sex. [source] Transient receptor potential A1 mediates acetaldehyde-evoked pain sensationEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF NEUROSCIENCE, Issue 9 2007Sangsu Bang Abstract Six transient receptor potential (TRP) ion channels expressed in the sensory afferents play an important role as body thermosensors and also as peripheral pain detectors. It is known that a number of natural compounds specifically activate those sensory neuronal TRP channels, and a well-known example is cinnamaldehyde for TRPA1. Here we show that human and mouse TRPA1 are activated by acetaldehyde, an intermediate substance of ethanol metabolism, in the HEK293T cell heterologous expression system and in cultured mouse trigeminal neurons. Acetaldehyde failed to activate other temperature-sensitive TRP channels expressed in sensory neurons. TRPA1 antagonists camphor and gadolinium, and a general TRP blocker ruthenium red inhibited TRPA1 activation by acetaldehyde. Camphor, gadolinium and ruthenium red also suppressed the acute nociceptive behaviors induced by the intradermal administration of acetaldehyde into the mouse footpads. Intradermal co-application of prostaglandin E2 and acetaldehyde greatly potentiated the acetaldehyde-induced nociceptive responses, and this effect was reversed by treatment with the TRPA1 antagonist camphor. These results suggest that acetaldehyde causes nociception via TRPA1 activation. Our data may also help elucidate the mechanisms underlying acetaldehyde-related pathological symptoms such as hangover pain. [source] Altered sensorimotor development in a transgenic mouse model of amyotrophic lateral sclerosisEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF NEUROSCIENCE, Issue 10 2004Julien Amendola Abstract Most neurodegenerative diseases become manifest at an adult age but abnormalities or pathological symptoms appear earlier. It is important to identify the initial mechanisms underlying such progressive neurodegenerative disease in both humans and animals. Transgenic mice expressing the familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)-linked mutation (G85R) in the enzyme superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) develop motor neuron disease at 8,10 months of age. We address the question of whether the mutation has an early impact on spinal motor networks in postnatal mutant mice. Behavioural tests showed a significant delay in righting and hind-paw grasping responses in mutant SOD1G85R mice during the first postnatal week, suggesting a transient motor deficit compared to wild-type mice. In addition, extracellular recordings from spinal ventral roots in an in vitro brainstem,spinal cord preparation demonstrated different pharmacologically induced motor activities between the two strains. Rhythmic motor activity was difficult to evoke with N -methyl- dl -aspartate and serotonin at the lumbar levels in SOD1G85R mice. In contrast to lumbar segments, rhythmic activity was similar in the sacral roots from the two strains. These results strongly support the fact that the G85R mutation may have altered lumbar spinal motor systems much earlier than previously recognized. [source] Protective effects of the Alisma orientalis extract on the experimental nonalcoholic fatty liver diseaseJOURNAL OF PHARMACY AND PHARMACOLOGY: AN INTERNATI ONAL JOURNAL OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCE, Issue 10 2006Xuezhi Hong The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the efficacy of Alisma orientalis methanolic extract (AOME) on the experimental nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) induced by high-fat diet. Rats were fed with high-fat diet for six weeks and then gavaged the AOME for another six weeks. Typical pathological symptoms of NAFLD occurred in the high-fat diet rats. Administration with the AOME (150,300 and 600 mg kg,1) markedly decreased the serum and liver lipids; the high level of fasting serum glucose was reduced and insulin resistance was improved. The AOME treatment was also helpful in preventing the oxidative stress by lessening lipid peroxidation and activating antioxidant enzymes. Markers of the liver injury, aminotransferase abnormalities and hepatomegaly were improved and morphological changes, such as liver steatosis, mixed inflammation and collagen deposition, were lessened in rats treated with the AOME. These results suggested that the AOME showed hepatoprotective effects on NAFLD and may be a potential clinical application for treatment of this chronic liver disease. [source] Inhibition of Glycosylation Processes: the Reaction between Pyridoxamine and GlucoseCHEMISTRY & BIODIVERSITY, Issue 7 2005Miquel Adrover Glycosylation of proteins by glucose produces toxic and immunogenic compounds called ,advanced glyclosylation end products' (AGEs), which are the origin of pathological symptoms in various chronic diseases. In this work, a kinetic study of the reaction between glucose (2) and pyridoxamine (1) , a potent inhibitor of AGEs formation both in vivo and in vitro , was conducted. The NH2 group of pyridoxamine was found to react with the CO group of glucose to form the Schiff base 9 (Scheme,2). Subsequently, the Schiff base gives rise to other products, including compound 3, pyridoxal, pyridoxine, and 4-pyridoxic acid. Compound 3 inhibits the Amadori rearrangement, and prevents the formation of other CO groups capable of triggering glycosylation processes. Pyridoxal and pyridoxine can also inhibit protein glycosylation via other previously reported mechanisms. [source] |
