    MARKET REACTIONS TO THE PASSAGE OF THE FINANCIAL HOLDING COMPANY ACT IN TAIWAN

    Abstract. We examine how financial institutions react to various events surrounding the passage of Taiwan's Financial Holding Company Act in June 2001. Empirical results indicate that the financial system experiences significant abnormal returns along the legislative process. Smaller firms have significantly higher abnormal returns, thus lending no support for the hypothesis that larger firms benefit more from the Act. Further analysis shows that the significance of market value is replaced by a significant securities industry effect, thereby consistent with the observation that Taiwan's securities firms are generally smaller in market values and are potential target firms for financial holding companies.     THE ALPS,A BARRIER OR A PASSAGE FOR CERAMIC TRADE?*

    The Alpsas a barrier: ceramic remnants of the so-called Laugen-Melaun culture (c. 11th to c. sixth centuries bc) can be found in the northern Italy (Trentino/Alto Adige),eastern Switzerland,Liechtenstein and western Austria region. A petrographic study of 454 sherds from this area covering a time span of 500 years reveals the following. (1) The pottery from the Trentino/Alto Adige contains a predominantly volcanic temper, which can be linked to the volcanic rocks of the Bolzano area,in other words, to the core region of this culture. This material is therefore of a local/regional production. (2) These ceramics were imported from the Bolzano region to southeastern Switzerland (the Inn Valley) and the amount of imported pottery decreases markedly from the 11th century bc (approximately 70% imported) to the seventh to sixth centuries bc (approximately 10% imported). (3) No imported pottery can be detected north of the Alpine crest in Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Austria, and in this region serpentinite temper was preferred by ancient potters. These results demonstrate that long-lasting contacts and ceramic trade existed between the populations of the Inn Valley and the Trentino/Alto Adige. Such contacts could have been motivated by intermarriages between the two populations and/or economic exchange. The potters north of the Alpine ridge adopted the Laugen-Melaun style and produced such pottery locally. The use of serpentinite temper is puzzling and not related to any technological advantage. (Could it be recycled material? Or does it have any sociocultural specificity?) The Alps as a passage: 59 fragments of a black gloss ware, the so-called Campana, unearthed at 11 Late Latene sites (second to first centuries bc) in Switzerland and neighbouring Germany were analysed chemically by X-ray fluorescence. The results revealed: (1) that all of them were produced either in Italy or Lyon and then exported to the north; (2) that two principal south,north exchange routes existed, (a) fluviatile, along the Rhône,Rhine corridor and (b) trans-Alpine, using the Alpine passes, such as the Simplon and the Grand St Bernard.     Stylet Bend Angles and Tracheal Tube Passage Using a Straight-to-cuff Shape

    Abstract Objectives Malleable stylets improve maneuverability and control during tube insertion, but after passage through the vocal cords the stiffened tracheal tube may impinge on the tracheal rings, preventing passage. The goal of this study was to assess insertion difficulty with styletted tubes of different bend angles. Methods Tube passage was assessed with four different bend angles (25°, 35°, 45°, and 60°) using straight-to-cuff,shaped tubes. In two separate airway procedure classes, 16 operators in each class (32 total) placed randomly ordered styletted tubes of the different angles into eight cadavers (16 total). Operators subjectively graded the ease of tube passage as no resistance, some resistance, or impossible to advance. Results No resistance was reported in 69.1% (177/256) at 25°, in 63.7% (163/256) at 35°, in 39.4% (101/256) at 45°, and in 8.9% (22/256) at 60°. Tube passage was impossible in 2.3% of insertions (6/256) at 25°, in 3.5% (9/256) at 35°, in 11.3% (29/256) at 45°, and in 53.9% (138/256) at 60°. The odds ratios of impossible tube passage for 35°, 45°, and 60° vs. 25° were 1.52 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.55 to 4.16), 5.32 (95% CI = 2.22 to 12.71), and 48.72 (95% CI = 21.35 to 111.03), respectively. Conclusions Bend angles beyond 35° with straight-to-cuff styletted tracheal tubes increase the risk of difficult and impossible tube passage into the trachea. The authors did not compare different stylet stopping points, stylets of different stiffness, or tracheal tubes with different tip designs, all variables that can affect tube passage. [source]

    The analysis deals with the question by focusing on the radically contrasting museological, aesthetic, and ethical codes of the Great Blacks in Wax Museum, and the Reginald Lewis Museum, both situated in Baltimore, Maryland. Three key sites are isolated for discussion: the names of the museums, their approaches to the topic of the Middle Passage, and lynching. While both museums have made important cultural contributions to the public memorialization of highly charged subjects, the Great Blacks in Wax emerges as the more radical institution, closely in touch with the dynamic and creative museum aesthetic of the wider Black Atlantic Diaspora, and of Brazil in particular.     Newly Developed Ultrasonic Probe With Ropeway System for Transpapillary Intraductal Ultrasonography of the Bilio,Pancreatic Ductal System

    Background: Intraductal ultrasonography of the bile/pancreatic duct using a thin-caliber ultrasonic probe (IDUS) provides excellent images of these ducts and the surrounding structures. Insertion of the device through the papilla of Vater is essential to carry out this examination. We developed a new probe with a ropeway system (XUM5RG-29R; Olympus, Tokyo) for transpapillary IDUS. Its usefulness such as ease of application and safety were prospectively evaluated. Patients and methods: During the period of October 1997 to April 1998, transpapillary IDUS using the probe was performed in 194 patients at seven medical institutions. The success rates of insertion of the probe into the bile/pancreatic duct, observation of the area of interest, and the incidence of complications were evaluated. Results: Passage of the probe through the papilla was successful without difficulty in all the patients. Successful introduction of the probe into the pancreatic duct, bile duct and both of the ducts was achieved in 98.4, 100 and 85% of the patients, respectively. Once the probe was introduced into the aimed duct, it was possible to obtain IDUS images of the area of interest in all but five patients. Mild acute pancreatitis developed in eight patients (4.1%), all of whom recovered with conservative therapy only. Conclusions: It is possible to introduce the new ultrasonic probe into the desired duct once a guide wire has been inserted. This type of ultrasonic probe is quite useful when performing transpapillary IDUS of the bile and/or pancreatic duct. [source]


    Influence of seasonal, diel, lunar, and other environmental factors on upstream fish passage in the Igarapava Fish Ladder, Brazil

    Abstract,,, Upstream fish passage was evaluated during 12 months in the vertical-slot Igarapava Fish Ladder constructed around Igarapava Dam, in the heavily dammed Grande River, Southeast Brazil. A video monitoring system was used to observe 61,621 fish that passed the ladder, of which 93.5% were identified to 15 taxa. Among the migratory species, the most abundant were Pimelodus maculatus (33.6% of all fish), Leporinus octofasciatus (31.4%), Leporinus friderici (4.5%), and Prochilodus lineatus (3.1%). Seven taxa were classified as nonmigratory, and of these taxa, the small Bryconamericus stramineus was the most abundant (12.7%) of all fishes. Passage of the ,nonmigratory' taxa upstream in the ladder shows they are migratory in this system and have a strong behavioural drive to move to upstream habitat. Passage of most taxa had a strong seasonal pattern. While some species passed primarily during the day, others showed a distinct nocturnal pattern. Lunar phase and water temperature also strongly affected passage of some taxa. Rainfall and dam discharge had a small or null influence on most taxa; perhaps due to the fairly small catchment area of the reservoir and the highly regulated discharge at Igarapava Dam. [source]


    Passage through alternative hosts changes the fitness of Fusarium graminearum and Fusarium pseudograminearum

    Summary Species of the necrotrophic fungal pathogen Fusarium that cause head blight and crown rot of cereals including wheat also infect a number of alternative host plants. This raises the prospect of more damaging pathogen strains originating and persisting as highly successful saprophytes on hosts other than wheat. The immediate impact on pathogenic (aggressiveness) and saprophytic (growth rate and fecundity) behaviour of six isolates with low, moderate or high initial aggressiveness was examined in two species of Fusarium after their passage through 10 alternative plant hosts. One passage through alternative hosts significantly reduced the pathogenic fitness of most isolates, but this change was not associated with a concomitant change in their overall saprophytic behaviour. The overall weak association between aggressiveness, fecundity and growth rate both before and after passage through the alternative hosts indicate that pathogenic and saprophytic fitness traits may be independently controlled in both Fusarium species. Thus, there was no trade-off between pathogenic and saprophytic fitness in these necrotrophic plant pathogens. [source]


    Psychotherapy as a Rite of Passage

    Some psychotherapies may work because they resemble rites of passage. To explore this idea, this article describes an "individual" case of depression in which drug, cognitive, and narrative approaches fell short of effectiveness, and change occurred in a series of experiences that resemble a rite of passage. This resemblance is illuminated by examining two apparently quite different healing processes,Alcoholics Anonymous and multifamily group therapy in schizophrenia,to explore the elements they have in common with the case described: the acceptance of what Victor Turner called a liminal experience, and the importance of witnesses to the ritual support for that acceptance. The discussion contributes to a loosening of the distinctions between the processes of individual, family, group, and other social therapies and leads to questions about the expert knowledge the therapist provides.     James Rogers and the Bristol slave trade*

    This article examines the business failure of James Rogers, a large Bristol slave trader, within the context of the operation of the late British slave trade in west Africa, on the Middle Passage, and in the Caribbean. Based on a large cache of surviving manuscripts, the article shows that the credit crisis of 1793 led to the demise of Rogers's mercantile career but also that his business collapse stemmed from over-extending his slave trading activities, from relatively poor profit levels, and from attempts to expand his trading portfolio in the eighteen months before the national financial crash.     The dispersal processes within the tide-modulated Changjiang River plume, China

    Abstract The dispersal processes of the tide-modulated Changjiang River plume, China, are studied by using a three-dimensional hydrodynamical module of the COHERENS (A COupled Hydrodynamical,Ecological model for REgional and Shelf Seas). The model is driven by the river discharge and the M2 tidal constituent. Modelled results show: (1) the fresh water, which forms the Changjiang River plume expanding southeastwards, is discharged mostly into the North Channel, the North Passage, and the South Passage; (2) the larger horizontal gradient outside the North Channel and the North Passage forms a strong plume front; (3) the Changjiang River plume is homogeneous vertically, and dispersing gradually within the computational domain, with an averaged propagating rate of 3.38,km/day, while the plume front is surface-to-bottom type, and trapped between ,10 and ,18m isobaths; and (4) both the plume length and the plume front intensity vary periodically. The maximum plume length occurs about 2,h after low slack water and the minimum plume length during high slack water.     A vertically moving grid finite-element modelling of tidal flow in the Changjiang Estuary, China

    Abstract An estuarine two-dimensional vertical finite-element model of tidal flow has been established by laterally integrating Navier,Stokes equation. To this end, a moving grid finite-element method has been used. An arbitrarily shaped quadrilateral element has been selected. This model has been validated by using field data from two monitoring stations at the North Passage of the Changjiang Estuary. Using this numerical model, two types of modelled results were obtained: (1) vertical distributions of tidal current velocities at the North Passage of the Changjiang Estuary; (2) longitudinal distributions of tidal current velocities at maximum flood tide, at high slack water, at maximum ebb tide and at low slack water tide at the North Passage of the Changjiang Estuary.     Mantle heterogeneity beneath the Antarctic,Phoenix Ridge off Antarctic Peninsula

    Abstract We determined the Sr, Nd and Pb isotopic compositions of basalts recovered from the Antarctic,Phoenix Ridge (APR), a fossil spreading center in the Drake Passage, Antarctic Ocean, in order to understand the nature of the subridge mantle source. There are no known hotspots in close proximity to the site. We observe that small-scale isotopic heterogeneity exists at a shallow level in the subaxial mantle of the APR. Enriched (E-type) mid-ocean ridge basalts (MORB) coexist with normal (N-type) MORB in this region. The E-type basalts are: (i) relatively young compared to the N-type samples; (ii) were erupted after the extinction of the APR; and (iii) have been generated by low-degree partial melting of an enriched mantle source. Extinction of the APR likely caused the extent of partial melting in this region to decrease. We interpret that the geochemically enriched materials dispersed in the ambient depleted mantle were the first fraction to melt to form the E-type MORB. [source]


    Experimental exposure of zebrafish, Danio rerio (Hamilton), to Mycobacterium marinum and Mycobacterium peregrinum reveals the gastrointestinal tract as the primary route of infection: a potential model for environmental mycobacterial infection

    Abstract The natural route by which fish become infected with mycobacteria is unknown. Danio rerio (Hamilton) were exposed by bath immersion and intubation to Mycobacterium marinum and Mycobacterium peregrinum isolates obtained from diseased zebrafish. Exposed fish were collected over the course of 8 weeks and examined for the presence of mycobacteriosis. Mycobacteria were consistently cultured from the intestines, and often from the livers and spleens of fish exposed by both methods. Mycobacteria were not observed in the gills. Histological analysis revealed that fish infected with M. marinum often developed granulomas accompanied by clinical signs of mycobacteriosis, while infection with M. peregrinum infrequently led to clinical signs of disease. Passage of the bacteria through environmental amoebae (Acanthamoeba castellani) was associated with increased growth of M. peregrinum over the course of 8 weeks, when compared to infection with the bacteria not passed through amoebae. The results provide evidence that zebrafish acquire mycobacteria primarily through the intestinal tract, resulting in mycobacterial dissemination. [source]

    Passage of a bubble through a liquid,liquid interface

    Abstract The aim of this study is to investigate the bubble passage at a liquid,liquid interface using a high-speed video camera (950 images per second) and a Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system. Experiments were conducted in a square Plexiglas column of 0.1 m. Bubbles were generated through a submerged orifice (D = 1 × 10,3 m). The Newtonian Emkarox (HV45) solution was employed for the heavy phase whereas two different organic liquids of different viscosity (Silicone oil 10 mPa s and 100 mPa s) were used as light phase.     Passage to cyberactivism: how dynamics of activism change

    Abstract The boost to activism to which the internet has largely contributed has been underlined by financial and image issues growing from hacker attacks and the online promotion of activist groups. Emergency corporate counteractions with regard to these cyber threats have not analysed this new phenomenon. The state of the research in this area has consistently remained at the period before the development and widespread use of the internet. Cyberactivism, therefore, is a cyber phenomenon without a clear meaning or a clear definition. In order to understand cyberactivism, it is important to understand that it is much more than simply about hacking and activists' online promotion. It is a new phenomenon, growing out of activism but changing the pressure on corporations. With the internet, new dynamics of issue selection have been established and a different aggregation within groups has taken place. A new organisational set-up among activist groups puts new pressure on corporations, which must develop new strategies concerning online rules. Cyber actions are originated by individuals triggering a spontaneous relationship between many users.     Helophyte germination in a Mediterranean salt marsh: Gut-passage by ducks changes seed response to salinity

    Abstract: Question: In seeds which are regularly consumed by waterbirds in the field, how does gut-passage modify their response to salinity gradients? Location: Doñana National Park salt marsh, south-west of Spain. Methods: Seeds of Scirpus litoralis and Scirpus maritimus were collected and force fed to mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). Both the ingested seeds (passage) and non-ingested seeds (controls) were exposed, in germination chambers, to a salinity range similar to that observed in the field (0,32 dS/m). After 30 days, the total percentage germination, the duration of the dormancy period and the germination speed were computed. The response of the different germination parameters to ingestion and salinity was analyzed using generalized lineal models. Recovery tests on seeds that did not germinate in the various treatments and tests of the effect of ingestion on the intrinsic variability in seed response were also performed. Results: An increase in salinity reduced germinability and increased the length of dormancy, while gut pas sage increased the intrinsic variability of the temporal seed response in both species. In S. litoralis there was a significant interaction between the effects of salinity and passage on germination rate. Passage increased germination rate at low salinities (,2 dS/m) but decreased it at high salinities (,4 dS/m). Conclusion: Gut-passage by ducks significantly changes seed response to salinity. The outcome of plant-animal interactions can be influenced by environmental gradients. Studies of germination in response to gut passage that do not take such gradients into account may produce misleading results. [source]


    Pharmacokinetics of erythromycin in nonlactating and lactating goats after intravenous and intramuscular administration

    The objectives of this work were to compare the pharmacokinetics of erythromycin administered by the intramuscular (i.m.) and intravenous (i.v.) routes between nonlactating and lactating goats and to determine the passage of the drug from blood into milk. Six nonpregnant, nonlactating and six lactating goats received erythromycin by the i.m. (15 mg/kg) and the i.v. (10 mg/kg) routes of administration. Milk and blood samples were collected at predetermined times. Erythromycin concentrations were determined by microbiological assay. Results are reported as mean ± SD. Comparison of the pharmacokinetic profiles between nonlactating and lactating animals after i.v. administration indicated that significant differences were found in the mean body clearance (8.38 ± 1.45 vs. 3.77 ± 0.83 mL/kg·h respectively), mean residence time (0.96 ± 0.20 vs. 3.18 ± 1.32 h respectively), area under curve from 0 to 12 h (AUC0,12) (1.22 ± 0.22 vs. 2.76 ± 0.58 ,g·h/mL respectively) and elimination half-life (1.41 ± 1.20 vs. 3.32 ± 1.34 h); however, only AUC0,12 showed significant differences after the i.m. administration. Passage of erythromycin in milk was high (peak milk concentration/peak serum concentration, 2.06 ± 0.36 and AUC0,12milk/AUC0,12serum,6.9 ± 1.05 and 2.37 ± 0.61 after i.v. and i.m. administrations respectively). We, therefore, conclude that lactation affects erythromycin pharmacokinetics in goats. [source]


    The behaviour of doramectin in the gastrointestinal tract, its secretion in bile and pharmacokinetic disposition in the peripheral circulation after oral and intravenous administration to sheep

    Sheep were ,compartmentalized' by surgically implanting cannulae in the rumen, abomasum and terminal ileum with a re-entrant cannula inserted between the cystic duct and the duodenum to monitor bile secretion. Doramectin, containing a trace of [3H]-doramectin, was administered both intravenously (i.v.) and intraruminally (i.r.) at a dosage of 150 ,g/kg. The pharmacokinetic behaviour of [3H]-labelled products was determined in these pools, and also in peripheral plasma, urine and faeces. Parent doramectin was also determined in plasma, abomasal digesta fluid and bile. Following i.r. administration, [3H] compounds were almost entirely associated with particulate digesta. A 14.5-h half-life in the rumen prolonged the presence of [3H] in the abomasum. Doramectin appeared to be degraded in abomasal digesta because only 24% of abomasal [3H] was attributed to the parent drug. Absorption of doramectin resulted in a systemic availability of 35%, of which 1.6 and 23.6% of the dose was contained in urine and biliary secretions, respectively. Following i.v. administration, almost negligible quantities of [3H] were secreted into the rumen or abomasum and only 2.7% of the dose was excreted in urine, whereas 132% was secreted in bile. This indicated that approximately one-third of biliary metabolites were enterohepatically recycled with biliary metabolites, elevating the proportion of [3H] in fluid digesta in the small intestine. Passage of the IR-administered drug through the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) resulted in virtually complete faecal excretion of [3H] within 5 days, whereas the continued secretion of i.v.-administered [3H] in bile prolonged the presence of [3H] in the GIT, with faecal clearance not being complete for at least 10 days. This multi-compartmental study has provided more information on the behaviour of doramectin than can be obtained from examining drug disposition in the peripheral circulation alone. With this knowledge, it is anticipated that opportunities for improving drug performance will be identified. [source]

    A cylindrical capacitor ionization source: droplet generation and controlled charge reduction for mass spectrometry

    A cylindrical capacitor ionization source was used in conjunction with corona discharge charge reduction for generation of singly charged ions for mass spectrometric analysis. The source consists of a fused-silica capillary threaded with a platinum wire and placed inside a stainless steel tube. Application of an electric potential to the wire results in the production of a linear stream of charged droplets when an aqueous solution is pumped through the capillary. Subsequent solvent evaporation yields ions, providing a continuous ion source for mass spectrometry. Passage of the ions through a corona discharge charge reduction chamber permits reduction of the charge state to predominantly singly charged species, facilitating analysis of DNA and protein mixtures. The change from production of multiply charged ions to production of singly charged ions is extremely simple, requiring only modulation of the voltage applied to the corona discharge electrode.     Dynamical budgets of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current using ocean general-circulation models

    Abstract Three general-circulation models (FRAM, OCCAM and POP) are used to investigate the dynamics of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) at the latitudes of the Drake Passage where the ACC is unbounded. In these general circulation models, bottom form stress balances the wind stress in the momentum budgets. In the vorticity budgets, the main balance is between wind curl and bottom pressure torque in FRAM, OCCAM and POP. Moreover, in the ACC belt all topographic features are regions of nonlinearity and bottom pressure torque variations, with the Drake Passage playing the largest role. Transient eddy Reynolds stresses (TERSs) play a different role in the three models. In the upper levels, TERSs accelerate the flow in the POP and FRAM models, but decelerate the flow in OCCAM. The behaviour of TERSs change throughout the whole water column in the ACC belt and Reynolds stresses have a dragging effect on the flow below the levels where the topography starts to obstruct the flow. The total volume transport in three models is very different. Additionally, the different spatial resolution, which results in a different level of eddy kinetic energy, has a significant influence on the transport.     Passage of pathogenic microorganisms through breathing system filters used in anaesthesia and intensive care

    Summary Invasive ventilation poses a risk of respiratory infection that can be drug-resistant. One means of reducing transmission of infection is the use of a breathing system filter. Filters are intended to be used with dry gas. Current international standards do not require that filters prevent bacterial transfer when wet. It is not known whether microorganisms pass through wet filters, but theory predicts that this might occur. We tested six filters from three different manufacturers. We passed a suspension of microorganisms through the filters using the least pressure necessary, and incubated a sample of the filtrate on blood agar. All the filters tested allowed free passage of both Candida albicans and coagulase-negative staphylococci. The median (IQR [range]) pressure required for fluid to flow across the filter varied greatly between different filter types (20 (0,48 [0,138]) cmH2O). We conclude that even large microorganisms pass across moist breathing system filters in conditions that are found in clinical practice. [source]
