Selected AbstractsExposure to Oestrogen Prenatally Does Not Interfere with the Normal Female-Typical Development of Odour PreferencesJOURNAL OF NEUROENDOCRINOLOGY, Issue 5 2007J. Bakker The neural mechanisms controlling mate recognition and heterosexual partner preference are sexually differentiated by perinatal actions of sex steroid hormones. We previously showed that the most important action of oestrogen during prenatal development is to defeminise and, to some extent, masculinise brain and behaviour in mice. Female mice deficient in alpha-foetoprotein (AFP) due to a targeted mutation in the Afp gene (AFP-KO) do not show any female sexual behaviour when paired with an active male because they lack the protective action of AFP against maternal oestrogens. In the present study, we investigated whether odour preferences, another sexually differentiated trait in mice, are also defeminised and/or masculinised in AFP-KO females due to their prenatal exposure to oestrogens. AFP-KO females of two background strains (CD1 and C57Bl/6j) preferred to investigate male over female odours when given the choice between these two odour stimuli in a Y-maze, and thus remained very female-like in this regard. Thus, the absence of lordosis behaviour in these females cannot be explained by a reduced motivation of AFP-KO females to investigate male-derived odours. Furthermore, the presence of a strong male-directed odour preference in AFP-KO females suggests a postnatal contribution of oestrogens to the development of preferences to investigate opposite-sex odours. [source] Zebra finch sexual differentiation: The aromatization hypothesis revisitedMICROSCOPY RESEARCH AND TECHNIQUE, Issue 6 2001Juli Wade Abstract Zebra finches have emerged as an outstanding model system for the investigation of the mechanisms regulating brain and behavior. Their song system has proven especially useful, as the function of discrete anatomical regions have been identified, and striking parallels exist between the morphology of these regions and the level of their function in males and females. That is, the structures are substantially more developed in males, who sing, compared to females, who do not. These parallels extend from higher (telencephalic) centers to the brainstem motor nucleus that innervates the muscles of the vocal organ. Other dimorphic aspects of reproduction in the zebra finch, such as copulatory behaviors and sexual partner preference, however, are not associated with known sex differences in anatomy. In many species, sex differences in neural and peripheral structures and behavior are regulated by secretions from the gonads, which of course are sexually dimorphic themselves. In birds, sex differences at all of these levels (gonad, brain, and behavior) can be mediated by steroid hormones. However, it is not entirely clear that gonadal secretions normally participate at all of the levels. This paper reviews the evidence relating to the role of gonadal steroids in the sexual differentiation of reproductive behaviors and the central and peripheral structures known to regulate them in zebra finches, with a focus on estradiol, which has been most extensively studied in the masculinization of song system morphology and function. [source] Changes in social interactions during adolescence in male mandrills (Mandrillus sphinx)AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PRIMATOLOGY, Issue 2 2004Marie Charpentier Abstract The adolescent period in male mandrills extends from the time the testicles descend (at the age of 3,4 years) to the time adult characteristics develop (at the age of 10 years), and is thus one of the longest adolescent periods in cercopithecines. In this short cross-sectional study of 11 male mandrills (4.7,9.1 years old), we analyzed social behavioral patterns to investigate partner preference and changes in types of interactions throughout puberty. The mandrills were separated into two clusters on the basis of all of the social interactions scored, as well as the age and sex of the protagonist. During early to mid puberty, immature individuals interacted preferentially with other male adolescents and juveniles. Playing was an important activity, and some affiliative interactions with juveniles were observed. Older adolescents interacted more with adult males and females. These older adolescents were predominantly aggressive toward other adolescents, females, and juveniles, and showed little or no affiliative or playful behaviors. These results indicate a shift in social partners: older males interacted more frequently with adult males, and their behavior involved more aggression and less submission compared to younger adolescents, which showed predominantly submissive and playful behavior. [source] Investigating Women's Preference for Sildenafil or Tadalafil Use by Their Partners with Erectile Dysfunction: The Partners' Preference StudyTHE JOURNAL OF SEXUAL MEDICINE, Issue 5 2008Helen M. Conaglen PhD ABSTRACT Introduction., Several preference studies comparing a short-acting with a longer-acting phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor have been conducted in men. Most men in those studies preferred tadalafil rather than sildenafil, and recent post hoc analysis of one study described several factors associated with men's treatment preference. No prospective studies have investigated the woman partners' preferences. Aim., To investigate the treatment preference of women who were partners of men using oral medications for erectile dysfunction (ED) in a single-center open-label crossover study. Methods., One hundred heterosexual couples in stable relationships, with male partners having ED based on the erectile function subscale of the International Index of Erectile Function, were randomly assigned to receive sildenafil or tadalafil for a 12-week phase, followed by another 12-week period using the alternate drug. Male and female participants completed sexual event diaries during both study phases, and the female participants were interviewed at baseline, midpoint, and end of study. Main Outcome Measures., Primary outcome data were the women's final interviews during which they were asked which drug they preferred and their reasons for that preference. Results., A total of 79.2% of the women preferred their partners' use of tadalafil, while 15.6% preferred sildenafil. Preference was not affected by age or treatment order randomization. Women preferring tadalafil reported feeling more relaxed, experiencing less pressure, and enjoying a more natural or spontaneous sexual experience as reasons for their choice. Mean number of tablets used, events recorded, events per week, and days between events were not significantly different during each study phase. Conclusion., Women's preferences were similar to men when using these two drugs. While the women's reasons for preferring tadalafil emphasized relaxed, satisfying, longer-lasting sexual experiences, those preferring sildenafil focused on satisfaction and drug effectiveness for their partner.
