VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS IN GROUND WATER FROM RURAL PRIVATE WELLS, 1986 TO 1999,

JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN WATER RESOURCES ASSOCIATION, Issue 5 2004
    Michael J. Moran
ABSTRACT: The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collected or compiled data on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in samples of untreated ground water from 1,926 rural private wells during 1986 to 1999. At least one VOC was detected in 12 percent of samples from rural private wells. Individual VOCs were not commonly detected with the seven most frequently detected compounds found in only 1 to 5 percent of samples at or above a concentration of 0.2 microgram per liter (,g/l). An assessment level of 0.2 ,g/l was selected so that comparisons of detection frequencies between VOCs could be made. The seven most frequently detected VOCs were: trichloromethane, methyl tert -butyl ether, tetrachloroethene, dichlorodifluoromethane, methylbenzene, 1,1,1-trichloroethane, and 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane. Solvents and trihalomethanes were the most frequently detected VOC groups in private wells. The distributions of detections of gasoline oxygenates and fumigants seemed to be related to the use patterns of compounds in these groups. Mixtures were a common mode of occurrence of VOCs with one-quarter of all samples with detections including two or more VOCs. The concentrations of most detected VOCs were relatively small and only 1.4 percent of samples had one or more VOC concentrations that exceeded a federally established drinking water standard or health criterion. Simultaneous estimation of diffusive Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) fluxes and Non-Aqueous Phase Liquid (NAPL) saturation in the vadose zone

GROUND WATER MONITORING & REMEDIATION, Issue 2 2005
    David Werner
Soil-gas monitoring is a widely used tool to observe the migration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at contaminated sites. By combining this technique with natural gradient tracer methods, diffusive contaminant fluxes can be measured in situ, and non, aqueous phase liquid (NAPL) can be detected and roughly quantified. This work describes the new approach and its application at a field site in Denmark with an emplaced NAPL contamination. Soil-gas probes with a low dead volume were installed at 1-m depths in the sandy vadose zone, and a small volume of gas containing conservative and partitioning tracers was injected. Soil-gas samples were withdrawn subsequently during 1 to 4 h and analyzed simultaneously for VOCs and tracers. Tracers detected the NAPL reliably, and the combined data allowed for a close delineation of the source zone. The calculated NAPL saturation deviated by up to a factor of 3 from the analyses of soil cores. Better agreement was found by taking the NAPL composition into consideration, which is, however, generally unknown at the actual field sites. In addition, the tracers were also used to estimate effective diffusion coefficients in situ, which varied by a factor of 2 between various locations. From these data, diffusive contaminant vapor fluxes were quantified without additional laboratory experiments or the use of empirical relationships. The new approach yields a better site investigation with a few additional measurements. [source]

Cryogenic condensation: A cost-effective technology for controlling VOC emissions

ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRESS & SUSTAINABLE ENERGY, Issue 2 2002
    Robert J. Davis
Cryogenic condensation is an extremely cost-effective technology for controlling emissions of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from chemical processing facilities under certain conditions. This paper describes the technology and provides the case history of an application in the pharmaceutical industry, in which its cost effectiveness was compared with a range of alternative technologies, including thermal oxidation, catalytic oxidation, flaring, carbon adsorption, and scrubbing. Because the facility already used significant quantities of liquid and gaseous nitrogen for inerting, blanketing, and purging, a very convenient cold source for cryogenic condensation was already present. On a lifetime cost basis, cryogenic condensation was significantly less costly than all other technologies evaluated. [source]

Sampling Strategies for Volatile Organic Compounds at Three Karst Springs in Tennessee

GROUND WATER MONITORING & REMEDIATION, Issue 1 2006
    Shannon D. Williams
The influence of different sampling strategies on characterizing volatile organic compound (VOC) concentrations and estimating VOC loads was evaluated at three karst springs in Tennessee. During a 6-month period, water samples for VOC analyses were collected weekly at all three springs and as frequently as every 20 min during storms at the two springs with variable water quality conditions. Total 6-month loads for selected VOCs were calculated, and VOC data were systematically subsampled to simulate and evaluate several potential sampling strategies. Results from the study indicate that sampling strategies for karst springs need to be developed on a site-specific basis. The use of fixed sampling intervals (as infrequently as quarterly or semiannually) produced accurate concentration and load estimates at one of the springs; however, additional sampling was needed to detect storm-related changes at a second spring located in a similar hydrogeologic setting. Continuous discharge data and high-frequency or flow-controlled sampling were needed at the third spring, which had the most variable flow and water quality conditions. The lack of continuous discharge data at the third spring would substantially affect load calculations, and the use of fixed sampling intervals would affect load calculations and the ability to detect pulses of high contaminant concentrations that might exceed toxicity levels for aquatic organisms. Peroxide/Potassium Iodide Redox Systems for in situ Oxyiodination of Organic Compounds under Liquid-Phase and Solvent-Free Conditions

HELVETICA CHIMICA ACTA, Issue 2 2010
    Gattu Venkateshwarlu
Abstract Iodination of certain aromatic amines and phenols are triggered by the oxidation of KI by peroxy compounds such as tert -butyl hydroperoxide (tBuOOH) under liquid-phase and solvent-free conditions by grinding the reactants in a mortar with a pestle. The reactions afforded corresponding iodo derivatives in good yield with high regioselectivity (Table,1). [source]

Carbon Nanotube/Hexa- peri -hexabenzocoronene Bilayers for Discrimination Between Nonpolar Volatile Organic Compounds of Cancer and Humid Atmospheres

    ADVANCED MATERIALS, Issue 38 2010
    Yael Zilberman
Cancer detection: The development of a cost-effective, portable and non-invasive diagnostic tool for detecting cancer from exhaled breath requires sensors that discriminate well between polar and nonpolar volatile organic compounds in highly humid atmospheres. Here we show that a chemiresistive bilayer comprised of a dense cap layer of discotic hexa-dodecyl-hexa-peri-hexabenzocoronene derivatives (hereby, HBC-C12) and a random network of carbon nanotubes (RN-CNT) as underlayer layer could fulfill these requirements. Highly Efficient Halogenation of Organic Compounds with Halides Catalyzed by Cerium(III) Chloride Heptahydrate Using Hydrogen Peroxide as the Terminal Oxidant in Water

ADVANCED SYNTHESIS & CATALYSIS (PREVIOUSLY: JOURNAL FUER PRAKTISCHE CHEMIE), Issue 11-12 2009
    Habib Firouzabadi
Abstract In this article a new environmentally friendly catalytic method is described for the efficient monoiodination and bromination of arenes and also iodoetherification and iodolactonization of olefins using hydrogen peroxide as the terminal oxidant. The method is based on using sodium iodide or sodium bromide, hydrogen peroxide (35%) and cerium(III) chloride as an effective catalyst in water at room temperature or under reflux conditions. By this protocol, iodination of anilines proceeded with high regioselectivity at the para position with the formation of small amounts of the ortho isomers. However, bromination of anilines proceeded with absolute regioselectivity to give the para isomers as the sole products in high yields. Iodinations and brominations of m -xylene, toluene, chloro- and bromobenzenes were proceeded with excellent regioselectivity to produce the para isomers as the sole products. Benzene was also halogenated by this catalytic system to give the monohalogenated benzene in good yields. Iodoetherification and iodolactonization of olefins also proceeded easily in high yields at room temperature. However, the bromination of olefins by this protocol failed and the starting materials were detected intact. [source]
