Kinds of One Component Selected AbstractsHuman jaw muscle strength and size in relation to limb muscle strength and sizeEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORAL SCIENCES, Issue 5 2004M. C. Raadsheer The aim of the present study was to investigate to what extent general factors (e.g. genotype, hormones) and factors at the craniofacial level (e.g. craniofacial size, jaw muscle architecture) contribute to the size and strength of the jaw muscles. A strong relationship of jaw muscle size and strength with that of other muscles would argue for general influences, whereas a weak relationship would argue for craniofacial influences. In 121 adult individuals, moments of maximal bite force, arm flexion force and leg extension force were measured. In addition, thicknesses of jaw muscles, arm flexor muscles and leg extensor muscles were measured using ultrasound. Relationships were assessed by using a principal component analysis. In females, one component was found in which all force moments were represented. Bite force moment, however, loaded very low. In males, two components were found. One component loaded for arm flexion and leg extension moments, the other loaded for bite force moments. In both females and males, only one component was found for the muscle thicknesses in which all muscle groups loaded similarly. It was concluded that the size of the jaw muscles was significantly related to the size of the limb muscles, suggesting that they were both subject to the same general influences. Maximal voluntary bite force moments were not significantly related to the moments of the arm flexion and leg extension forces, suggesting that besides the general influence on the muscle size, variation in bite force moment was also influenced by local variables, such as craniofacial morphology. [source] AN EXACT FORM OF THE BREEDER'S EQUATION FOR THE EVOLUTION OF A QUANTITATIVE TRAIT UNDER NATURAL SELECTIONEVOLUTION, Issue 11 2005John S. Heywood Abstract Starting with the Price equation, I show that the total evolutionary change in mean phenotype that occurs in the presence of fitness variation can be partitioned exactly into five components representing logically distinct processes. One component is the linear response to selection, as represented by the breeder's equation of quantitative genetics, but with heritability defined as the linear regression coefficient of mean offspring phenotype on parent phenotype. The other components are identified as constitutive transmission bias, two types of induced transmission bias, and a spurious response to selection caused by a covariance between parental fitness and offspring phenotype that cannot be predicted from parental phenotypes. The partitioning can be accomplished in two ways, one with heritability measured before (in the absence of) selection, and the other with heritability measured after (in the presence of) selection. Measuring heritability after selection, though unconventional, yields a representation for the linear response to selection that is most consistent with Darwinian evolution by natural selection because the response to selection is determined by the reproductive features of the selected group, not of the parent population as a whole. The analysis of an explicitly Mendelian model shows that the relative contributions of the five terms to the total evolutionary change depends on the level of organization (gene, individual, or mated pair) at which the parent population is divided into phenotypes, with each frame of reference providing unique insight. It is shown that all five components of phenotypic evolution will generally have nonzero values as a result of various combinations of the normal features of Mendelian populations, including biparental sex, allelic dominance, inbreeding, epistasis, linkage disequilibrium, and environmental covariances between traits. Additive genetic variance can be a poor predictor of the adaptive response to selection in these models. The narrow-sense heritability s,2A/s,2P should be viewed as an approximation to the offspring-parent linear regression rather than the other way around. [source] The neural origins of superficial and individuated judgments about ingroup and outgroup membersHUMAN BRAIN MAPPING, Issue 1 2010Jonathan B. Freeman Abstract We often form impressions of others based on superficial information, such as a mere glimpse of their face. Given the opportunity to get to know someone, however, our judgments are allowed to become more individuated. The neural origins of these two types of social judgment remain unknown. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging to dissociate the neural mechanisms underlying superficial and individuated judgments. Given behavioral evidence demonstrating impairments in individuating others outside one's racial group, we additionally examined whether these neural mechanisms are race-selective. Superficial judgments recruited the amygdala. Individuated judgments engaged a cortical network implicated in mentalizing and theory of mind. One component of this mentalizing network showed selectivity to individuated judgments, but exclusively for targets of one's own race. [source] Structural mechanisms of multidrug recognition and regulation by bacterial multidrug transcription factorsMOLECULAR MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 4 2002Maria A. Schumacher Summary The increase in bacterial resistance to multiple drugs represents a serious and growing health risk. One component of multidrug resistance (MDR) is a group of multidrug transporters that are often regulated at the transcriptional level by repressors and/or activators. Some of these transcription factors are also multidrug-binding proteins, frequently recognizing the same array of drugs that are effluxed by the transporters that they regulate. How a single protein can recognize such chemically disparate compounds is an intriguing question from a structural standpoint and an important question in future drug development endeavours. Unlike the multidrug transporters, the cytosolic multidrug-binding regulatory proteins are more tractable systems for structural analyses. Here, we describe recent crystallographic studies on MarR, BmrR and QacR, three bacterial transcription regulators that are also multidrug-binding proteins. Although our understanding of multidrug binding and transcriptional regulation by MarR is in its initial stages, the structure of a BmrR,TPP+,DNA complex has revealed important insights into the novel transcription activation mechanism of the MerR family, and the structures of a QacR,DNA complex and QacR bound to six different drugs have revealed not only the mechanism of induction of this repressor but has afforded the first view of any MDR protein bound to multiple drugs. [source] Predicting the effect of muscle length on fatigue during electrical stimulationMUSCLE AND NERVE, Issue 4 2009M. Susan Marion PhD Abstract Mathematical models have been developed to predict fatigue during functional electrical stimulation, but the predictive accuracy at different muscle lengths is unknown. The objectives of our study were to: (1) experimentally determine the relationship between knee extension angle (20°, 40°, 65°, and 90°) and fatigue of the quadriceps muscles, and (2) predict that relationship using a mathematical model. A computer-controlled stimulator sent trains of pulses to surface electrodes on the thighs of five subjects while forces were measured at the ankle. A two-component mathematical model was developed. One component accounted for force, and the other accounted for fatigue. The model was fit to the data, and parameters were identified at 90°. The fitted subject-averaged r2 value was 0.89. The model was used to predict fatigue at the remaining angles, and the subject-averaged r2 values were >0.75. Therefore, at least 75% of the variability in the measurements was explained by the model. The force model is explicitly dependent on angle, and the fatigue model is explicitly dependent on force; therefore, the dependence of fatigue on knee angle was implicit. The paper then draws attention to how the proximate should not hold exclusive sway regarding what constitutes best nursing treatment and care. The error of excessive preference for proximity is shown to be an error, using as an example the treatment of leg ulcers. One component of holism that can be clearly expressed amounts therefore simply to the claim: resist the error of excessive proximity preference, resist the error of concentrating solely on nearness. It is left open whether there is any further sense to be gleaned from the holistic babble. Pottorf 1 Intracellular calcium is a universal second messenger integrating numerous cellular pathways. An age-related breakdown in the mechanisms controlling [Ca2+]i homeostasis could contribute to neuronal degeneration. One component of neuronal calcium regulation believed to decline with age is the function of sarco/endoplasmic reticulum calcium ATPase (SERCA) pumps. 2 Therefore we investigated the impact of age on the capacity of SERCA pumps to control high (68 m M) [K+]-evoked [Ca2+]i -transients in acutely dissociated superior cervical ganglion (SCG) cells from 6- and 20-month-old Fisher-344 rats. Calcium transients were measured by fura-2 microfluorometry in the presence of vanadate (0.1 ,M) to selectively block plasma membrane calcium ATPase (PMCA) pumps, dinitrophenol (100 ,M) to block mitochondrial calcium uptake and extracellular sodium replaced with tetraethylammonium to block Na+/Ca2+ -exchanger, thus forcing the neuronal cells to rely on SERCA uptake to control [Ca2+]i homeostasis. 3 In the presence of these calcium buffering blockers, the rate of recovery of [Ca2+]i was significantly slower and time to recover to approximately 90% of resting [Ca2+]i was significantly greater in SCG cells from old (20 months) compared with young (6 months) animals. 4 This age-related change in the recovery phase of [K+]-evoked [Ca2+]i -transients could not be explained by differences in the sensitivity of SCG cells to the calcium buffering blockers, as no age-related difference in basal [Ca2+]i was observed. 5 These studies illustrate that when rat SCG cells are forced to rely on SERCAs to buffer [K+]-evoked [Ca2+]i -transients, an age-related decline in SERCA function is revealed. Such age-related declines in calcium regulation coupled with neuronal sensitivity to calcium overload underscore the importance of understanding the components of [Ca2+]i homeostasis and the functional compensation that may occur with advancing age. [source] Motor impairments in young children with cerebral palsy: relationship to gross motor function and everyday activitiesDEVELOPMENTAL MEDICINE & CHILD NEUROLOGY, Issue 9 2004Sigrid Østensjø MSc PT In this study we assessed the distribution of spasticity, range of motion (ROM) deficits, and selective motor control problems in children with cerebral palsy (CP), and examined how these impairments relate to each other and to gross motor function and everyday activities. Ninety-five children (55 males, 40 females; mean age 58 months, SD18 months, range 25 to 87 months) were evaluated with the modified Ashworth scale (MAS), passive ROM, the Selective Motor Control scale (SMC), the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM), and the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI). Types of CP were hemiplegia (n=19), spastic diplegia (n=40), ataxic diplegia (n=4), spastic quadriplegia (n=16), dyskinetic (n=9), and mixed type (n=7). Severity spanned all five levels of the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS). The findings highlight the importance of measuring spasticity and ROM in several muscles and across joints. Wide variability of correlations of MAS, ROM, and SMC indicates a complex relationship between spasticity, ROM, and selective motor control. Loss of selective control seemed to interfere with gross motor function more than the other impairments. Further analyses showed that motor impairments were only one component among many factors that could predict gross motor function and everyday activities. Accomplishment of these activities was best predicted by the child's ability to perform gross motor tasks. [source] New reproductive anomalies in fruitless -mutant Drosophila males: Extreme lengthening of mating durations and infertility correlated with defective serotonergic innervation of reproductive organsDEVELOPMENTAL NEUROBIOLOGY, Issue 2 2001Gyunghee Lee Abstract Several features of male reproductive behavior are under the neural control of fruitless (fru) in Drosophila melanogaster. This gene is known to influence courtship steps prior to mating, due to the absence of attempted copulation in the behavioral repertoire of most types of fru -mutant males. However, certain combinations of fru mutations allow for fertility. By analyzing such matings and their consequences, we uncovered two striking defects: mating times up to four times the normal average duration of copulation; and frequent infertility, regardless of the time of mating by a given transheterozygous fru -mutant male. The lengthened copulation times may be connected with fru -induced defects in the formation of a male-specific abdominal muscle. Production of sperm and certain seminal fluid proteins are normal in these fru mutants. However, analysis of postmating qualities of females that copulated with transheterozygous mutants strongly implied defects in the ability of these males to transfer sperm and seminal fluids. Such abnormalities may be associated with certain serotonergic neurons in the abdominal ganglion in which production of 5HT is regulated by fru. These cells send processes to contractile muscles of the male's internal sex organs; such projection patterns are aberrant in the semifertile fru mutants. Therefore, the reproductive functions regulated by fruitless are expanded in their scope, encompassing not only the earliest stages of courtship behavior along with almost all subsequent steps in the behavioral sequence, but also more than one component of the culminating events. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. McCauley The coexistence of females and hermaphrodites in plant populations, or gynodioecy, is a puzzle recognized by Darwin. Correns identified cytoplasmic inheritance of one component of sex expression, now known as cytoplasmic male sterility (CMS). Lewis established cytonuclear inheritance of gynodioecy as an example of genetic conflict. Although biologists have since developed an understanding of the mechanisms allowing the joint maintenance of CMS and nuclear male fertility restorer genes, puzzles remain concerning the inheritance of sex expression and mechanisms governing the origination of CMS. Much of the theory of gynodioecy rests on the assumption of maternal inheritance of the mitochondrial genome. Here we review recent studies of the genetics of plant mitochondria, and their implications for the evolution and transmission of CMS. New studies of intragenomic recombination provide a plausible origin for the chimeric ORFs that characterize CMS. Moreover, evidence suggests that nonmaternal inheritance of mitochondria may be more common than once believed. These findings may have consequences for the maintenance of cytonuclear polymorphism, mitochondrial recombination, generation of gynomonoecious phenotypes, and interpretation of experimental crosses. Finally we point out that CMS can alter the nature of the cytonuclear conflict that may have originally selected for uniparental inheritance. [source] Private channel: a single unusual compound assures specific pollinator attraction in Ficus semicordataFUNCTIONAL ECOLOGY, Issue 5 2009Chun Chen Summary 1.,Floral scents have been suggested to play a key role in the obligate pollination mutualism between figs and fig wasps. However, few studies have determined whether pollinator-attractive compounds could alone assure species-specificity (,private channel'), or whether specificity is mediated by more complex ,floral filters', of which scent is only one component. 2.,We examined changes in the floral volatile compounds of Ficus semicordata, a dioecious fig species, during and after pollination using headspace collection and compound identification by Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS). One benzenoid compound, 4-methylanisole, was strongly predominant (94,98%) among the volatile compounds emitted by both male and female receptive figs of F. semicordata, whereas it was totally absent in the volatiles emitted by figs 4 days after pollination, as well as in receptive-stage volatiles emitted by two other sympatric fig species, Ficus racemosa and Ficus hispida. 3.,Bioassays using the specific pollinator of F. semicordata, Ceratosolen gravelyi, in a Y-tube olfactometer showed that 4-methylanisole was attractive to C. gravelyi in a wide range of concentrations (from 1·22 × 10,2 ng/100 ,L to 1·22 × 106ng/100,L). Moreover, chemical blends lacking 4-methylanisole were unattractive to C. gravelyi. These non-active odour sources included volatile compounds emitted by receptive figs of the two other sympatric fig species and volatiles of F. semicordata post-pollination figs. 4.,All these results suggest that 4-methylanisole is the main signal compound in the floral scent of F. semicordata that attracts its obligate pollinator to the host figs at the precise stage required for pollination and oviposition. Furthermore, the high proportion of 4-methylanisole in the odours of receptive figs of both sexes was consistent with the hypothesis of chemical mimicry in dioecious figs. 5.,A simple signal comprised of one compound that is unusual among Ficus and that is an infrequent, usually minor, component of other floral odours, may thus function as a private channel in this specialized obligate mutualism. Monaghan Summary 1Research on senescence has largely focused on its underlying causes, and is concentrated on humans and relatively few model organisms in laboratory conditions. To understand the evolutionary ecology of senescence, research on a broader taxonomic range is needed, incorporating field, and, where possible, longitudinal studies. 2Senescence is generally considered to involve progressive deterioration in performance, and it is important to distinguish this from other age-related phenotypic changes. We outline and discuss the main explanations of why selection has not eliminated senescence, and summarise the principal mechanisms thought to be involved. 3The main focus of research on senescence is on age-related changes in mortality risk. However, evolutionary biologists focus on fitness, of which survival is only one component. To understand the selective pressures shaping senescence patterns, more attention needs to be devoted to age-related changes in fecundity. 4Both genetic and environmental factors influence the rate of senescence. However, a much clearer distinction needs to be drawn between life span and senescence rate, and between factors that alter the overall risk of death, and factors that alter the rate of senescence. This is particularly important when considering the potential reversibility and plasticity of senescence, and environmental effects, such as circumstances early in life. 5There is a need to reconcile the different approaches to studying senescence, and to integrate theories to explain the evolution of senescence with other evolutionary theories such as sexual and kin selection. [source] Morphology Control in Solution-Processed Bulk-Heterojunction Solar Cell MixturesADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 19 2009Adam J. Moulé Abstract The efficiency of bulk-heterojunction solar cells is very sensitive to the nanoscale structure of the active layer. In the past, the final morphology in solution-processed devices has been controlled by varying the casting solvent and by curing the layer using heat tempering or solvent soaking. A recipe for making the "best-performing" morphology can be achieved using these steps. This article presents a review of several new techniques that have been developed to control the morphology in polymer/fullerene heterojunction mixtures. The techniques fall into two broad categories. First, the morphology can be controlled by preparing nanoparticle suspensions of one component. The size and shape of the nanoparticles in solution determine the size and shape of the domain in a mixed layer. Second, the morphology can be controlled by adding a secondary solvent or an additive that more strongly affects one component of the mixture during drying. In both cases, the as-cast efficiency of the solar cell is improved with respect to the single-solvent case, which strongly argues that morphology control is an issue that will receive increasing attention in future research. [source] Comprehensive elements of a physiotherapy exercise programme in haemophilia , a global perspectiveHAEMOPHILIA, Issue 2010G. BLAMEY Summary., Exercise programmes for people with haemophilia are usually designed and implemented to help manage the recovery after a haemarthrosis or a muscle bleed, or as a tool to help prevent bleeding episodes from occurring. In this article, we have identified individual components of exercise that are often applied as separate entities, but may also need to be implemented in concert for optimized impact. Although it may be necessary on occasion to bias an exercise programme towards one component over the others, it is important to recognize that the various elements of exercise are not mutually exclusive. Decreased flexibility, strength and proprioception, will result in an impairment of balance and a loss of function. Programme design should whenever possible be guided by proven methodology in terms of how each component is incorporated, and more specifically how long to perform the exercise for and how many repetitions should be performed. We recognize, however, that this is not always possible and that there is significant value in drawing from the experience of clinicians with specialized training in the management of haemophilia. In this study, both perspectives are presented, providing reference-based reviews of the mechanics of the various elements of exercise as well as the expert opinions of the authors. Research that has been completed using patients with conditions other than haemophilia may or may not have a direct application with the bleeding disorders population, but the programme design based on principles of tissue healing in addition to disease specific knowledge should be encouraged. [source] The effects of the glutamate antagonist memantine on brain activation to an auditory perception taskHUMAN BRAIN MAPPING, Issue 11 2009Heidi van Wageningen Abstract Glutamate is critically involved in the regulation of cognitive functions in humans. There is, however, sparse evidence regarding how blocking glutamate action at the receptor site during a cognitive task affects brain activation. In the current study, the effects of the glutamate antagonist memantine were examined with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Thirty-one healthy adults were scanned twice in a counter-balanced design, either in a no-drug session or after administration of memantine for 21 days. The subjects performed a simple auditory perception task with consonant-vowel stimuli. Group-level spatial independent component analysis (ICA) was used to decompose the data and to extract task-related activations. The focus was on four task-related ICA components with frontotemporal localization. The results showed that glutamate-blockage resulted in a significant enhancement in one component, with no significant effect in the other three components. The enhanced effect of memantine was in the middle temporal gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, and middle frontal gyrus. It is suggested that the results reflect effects of glutamatergic processes primarily through non- N -methyl- D -aspartate (NMDA) receptor pathways. Moreover, the results demonstrate that memantine can be used as a probe which allows for studying the effect of excitatory neurotransmission on neuronal activation. [source] Detecting functional nodes in large-scale cortical networks with functional magnetic resonance imaging: A principal component analysis of the human visual systemHUMAN BRAIN MAPPING, Issue 9 2007Christine Ecker Abstract This study aimed to demonstrate how a regional variant of principal component analysis (PCA) can be used to delineate the known functional subdivisions of the human visual system. Unlike conventional eigenimage analysis, PCA was carried out as a second-level analysis subsequent to model-based General Linear Model (GLM)-type functional activation mapping. Functional homogeneity of the functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) time series within and between clusters was examined on several levels of the visual network, starting from the level of individual clusters up to the network level comprising two or more distinct visual regions. On each level, the number of significant components was identified and compared with the number of clusters in the data set. Eigenimages were used to examine the regional distribution of the extracted components. It was shown that voxels within individual clusters and voxels located in bilateral homologue visual regions can be represented by a single component, constituting the characteristic functional specialization of the cluster(s). If, however, PCA was applied to time series of voxels located in functionally distinct visual regions, more than one component was observed with each component being dominated by voxels in one of the investigated regions. The model of functional connections derived by PCA was in accordance with the well-known functional anatomy and anatomical connectivity of the visual system. PCA in combination with conventional activation mapping might therefore be used to identify the number of functionally distinct nodes in an fMRI data set in order to generate a model of functional connectivity within a neuroanatomical network. [source] Androgen receptor gene polymorphism and the metabolic syndrome in 60,80 years old Norwegian menINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ANDROLOGY, Issue 3 2010Paal André Skjærpe Summary The metabolic syndrome (MS) includes a clustering of metabolic derangements. Low testosterone levels have been shown to be associated with both components of MS and MS per se. As most androgen-related effects are mediated thorough the androgen receptor (AR), we wanted to investigate to which degree the AR CAG and GGN repeat polymorphisms might be related to MS. Sixty-eight men, 60,80 years old, with subnormal total testosterone levels (,11.0 nmol/L) and 104 men with normal levels (>11.0 nmol/L), participating in a nested case,control study were investigated in this study. Body weight, height, waist circumferences and blood pressure were measured. Fasting blood samples were drawn and an oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was performed. The CAG and GGN polymorphisms in the AR gene were determined by direct sequencing of leucocyte DNA. Men with MS had lower CAG repeat number than healthy men (p = 0.007). There were, however, no difference in CAG or GGN repeats length between the groups with subnormal or normal testosterone concentrations. In cross-sectional analyses, men with CAG repeat lengths , 21 had significantly higher fasting glucose, C-peptide and glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels (all p < 0.05). In multiple regression analyses, CAG repeat length was an inverse and independent predictor of glucose after an OGTT and of HbA1c levels. We also found that men with more than one component of MS had shorter CAG repeat number (p for trend 0.013) than those with only one component. In conclusion, there were no associations with GGN repeat length, while short CAG repeat length seems to be associated with increased risk of MS. [source] Current Developments and Trends in Social and Environmental Auditing, Reporting and Attestation: A Review and CommentINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF AUDITING, Issue 3 2000Rob Gray This is a discursive paper which attempts to provide a personal review of current and recent developments in social and environmental reporting with particular emphasis on the attestation and auditing implications. The paper takes the essential desirability of social, environmental and sustainability reporting as a crucial element in any well-functioning democracy as a given. It further assumes that any civilised, but complex, society with pretensions to social justice, that seeks a potentially sustainable future and which wishes to try and rediscover some less exploitative and less insulated relationship with the natural environment, needs social and environmental reporting as one component in redirecting its social and economic organisation. With reporting being such a central issue, the paper further takes good quality attestation of that information as essential to both its reliability and its ability to fulfill its required role in developing transparency and accountability. The paper has three motifs: the need to clarify terminology in the field of social and environmental ,audits'; the current weakness of attestation practices in the area; and the significant , but unfulfilled , promise offered by professional accounting and auditing education and training. The paper concludes with a call for a substantial re-think of accounting education and training. [source] Induced choquet ordered averaging operator and its application to group decision makingINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF INTELLIGENT SYSTEMS, Issue 1 2010Chunqiao Tan Yager (Fuzzy Sets Syst 2003;137:59,69) extended the idea of order-induced aggregation to the Choquet aggregation and defined a more general type of Choquet integral operator called the induced Choquet ordered averaging (I-COA) operator, which take as their argument pairs, in which one component called order-inducing variable is used to induce an ordering over the second components called argument variable and then aggregated. The aim of this paper is to develop the I-COA operator. Some of its properties are investigated. We show its relationship to the induced-ordered weighted averaging operator. In these models, the incremental information content of the various components of accruals is ignored. Limited prior research and data gathered from firms under Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) litigation indicate that managers use either one or more than one component of accruals simultaneously, in a consistent way to manipulate bottom-line earnings in a given direction. I propose two measures that capture the consistency between the discretionary components of accruals and test their significance in earnings management (EM) detection in firms that have artificially added accrual manipulation and firms that were targeted by the SEC for accrual manipulation. There is evidence that this information is incrementally useful in detecting EM. This finding paves the way for improvements in the discretionary accruals measure by including consistency information from the components of aggregate accruals. Alam Abstract The effect of non-exponential and multi-exponential decay or relaxation behavior on the performance of the direct exponential curve resolution algorithm (DECRA) is investigated through a series of numerical simulations. Three different combinations of decay or relaxation behavior were investigated through DECRA analysis of simulated pulse gradient spin echo (PGSE) NMR diffusion spectra that contained the combination of two individual components. The diffusion decay behavior of one component was described by a single-exponential decay, while the second component was described by either (1) a multi-exponential decay, (2) a decay behavior described by the empirical Kohlrausch,Williams,Watts (KWW) relation or (3) a multi-exponential decay behavior correlated with variations in the NMR spectral line shape. The magnitudes and types of errors produced during the DECRA analysis of spectral data with deviations from a pure single-exponential decay behavior are presented. It is demonstrated that the deviation from single-exponential decay impacts the resulting calculated line shapes, the calculated relative concentrations and the quantitative estimation of the decay or relaxation time constants of both components present in the NMR spectra. [source] Enhancing spiritual well-being among suicidal African American female survivors of intimate partner violenceJOURNAL OF CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 10 2007Natalie C. Arnette Spirituality has been identified as one component of a culturally competent therapeutic intervention for African American women. The present study was designed to investigate the ability of factors, such as level of hopelessness and the use of positive religious coping strategies, to predict spiritual well-being over time. Seventy-four low-income African American women were administered self-report questionnaires measuring hopelessness, use of religious coping strategies, and two domains of spiritual well-being. Path analysis indicated that hopelessness, existential well-being, religious well-being, and positive religious coping are correlated with one another. Further, lower levels of hopelessness predict increases in existential well-being over time; higher levels of positive religious coping predict increases in religious well-being over time. Results were consistent with the study hypotheses and highlight the need to attend to predictors of spiritual well-being when implementing culturally relevant interventions with abused, suicidal African American women. Therapeutic strategies for reducing hopelessness and enhancing positive religious coping to improve spiritual and existential well-being are presented; such strategies will ensure the interventions are more culturally competent. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source] Trade and agroindustrialization in developing countries: trends and policy impactsAGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS, Issue 3 2000Eugenio Díaz-Bonilla Abstract There have been important changes in the international trade of processed and high-value added food products from developing countries over the past several decades. One of them has been the emergence of oilseeds and fruits and vegetables, replacing traditional products such as sugar, coffee, and cocoa as the main exports from developing countries. Another trend has been the collapse of African agroindustrial exports and the increase of exports from Asia. The paper highlights key trends, and explores possible reasons for the trends, focusing on trade policies in less-developed countries (LDCs) and developed countries (DCs). The paper argues that national trade policies and other economic policies appear to have been relatively supportive of agroindustrial production and exports in Asia. In contrast, policies have had more mixed effects in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), and seem to have been just one component in a larger array of forces inhibiting economic development in Africa. The performance of agroindustrial production and exports from LDCs may be now more dependent than ever on the completion of reforms in the agricultural trade policies of DCs. For Africa, however, a more supportive international environment and better macroeconomic and trade policies will not be enough to ensure a thriving agroindustrial sector within a broader process of economic development until military confrontations stop. [source] Reconsidering Graduate Students' Education as Teachers: "It Takes a Department!"MODERN LANGUAGE JOURNAL, Issue 4 2001Heidi Byrnes The article argues that prevailing approaches to educating graduate students as teachers need to be broadened conceptually and in practice. In particular, it suggests that preparing graduate students to teach constitutes only one component of a two-fold responsibility of graduate programs: to educate their students both as researchers and as teachers. To establish this linkage, graduate departments require a comprehensive intellectual-academic center that touches upon all practices of its members, faculty, and graduate students, in research and teaching. The paper suggests that a carefully conceptualized, integrated 4-year, content-oriented and task-based curriculum with a literacy focus provides such an intellectual core. By overcoming the traditional split of language and content, it invites a reconsideration of current practices in teaching and in the relationship of teaching and research. The article elaborates these issues through a case study in one graduate department, focusing on the implications of a reconfigured departmental culture for graduate students' education as teachers and for their socialization into the profession. It concludes with observations about the nature and conditions of change in higher education. PUJOLAR Abstract Positive correlations between individual genetic heterozygosity and fitness-related traits (HFCs) have been observed in organisms as diverse as plants, marine bivalves, fish or mammals. HFCs are not universal and the strength and stability of HFCs seem to be variable across species, populations and ages. We analysed the relationship between individual genetic variability and two different estimators of fitness in natural samples of European eel, growth rate (using back-calculated length-at-age 1, 2 and 3) and parasite infestation by the swimbladder nematode Anguillicola crassus. Despite using a large data set of 22 expressed sequence tags-derived microsatellite loci and a large sample size of 346 individuals, no heterozygote advantage was observed in terms of growth rate or parasite load. The lack of association was evidenced by (i) nonsignificant global HFCs, (ii) a Multivariate General Linear Model showing no effect of heterozygosity on fitness components, (iii) single-locus analysis showing a lower number of significant tests than the expected false discovery rate, (iv) sign tests showing only a significant departure from expectations at one component, and, (v) a random distribution of significant single-locus HFCs that was not consistent across fitness components or sampling sites. This contrasts with the positive association observed in farmed eels in a previous study using allozymes, which can be explained by the nature of the markers used, with the allozyme study including many loci involved in metabolic energy pathways, while the expressed sequence tags-linked microsatellites might be located in genes or in the proximity of genes uncoupled with metabolism/growth. Taylor ABSTRACT We use a model-independent technique to investigate the nature of the 2,15 keV X-ray spectral variability in four Seyfert galaxies and distinguish between spectral pivoting and the two-component model for spectral variability. Our analysis reveals conclusively that the softening of the X-ray continuum with increasing flux in MCG,6-30-15 and NGC 3516 is a result of summing two spectral components: a soft varying component (SVC) with spectral shape independent of flux and a hard constant component (HCC). In contrast, the spectral variability in NGC 4051 can be well described by simple pivoting of one component, together with an additional hard constant component. The spectral variability model for NGC 5506 is ambiguous, due to the smaller range of fluxes sampled by the data. We investigate the shape of the hard spectral component in MCG,6-30-15 and find that it appears similar to a pure reflection spectrum, but requires a large reflected fraction (R > 3). We briefly discuss physical interpretations of the different modes of spectral variability. One tagged nonpathogenic mutant, termed m20, was analysed in detail here. ,,The mutant phenotype was investigated by microscopic analyses of infected plant tissues and in vitro growth assays. Complementation and silencing experiments were used to identify the altered gene. Its function was determined by bioinformatics analyses, cell biology experiments and functional studies. ,,The mutant was blocked at the invasive growth phase after an unaffected initial penetration stage, and displayed a reduced growth rate and an aberrant hyphal morphology in vitro. The T-DNA insertion occurred in the intergenic region between two head-to-tail genes, leading to a complex deregulation of their expression. The unique gene accounting for the mutant phenotype was suggested to be the orthologue of the poorly conserved Saccharomyces cerevisiae gpi15, which encodes for one component of the glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) anchor biosynthesis pathway. Consistent with this predicted function, a functional translational fusion with the green fluorescent protein (GFP) was targeted to the endoplasmic reticulum. Moreover, the mutant exhibited an altered cell wall and addition of glucosamine relieved growth defects. ,,It is concluded that the GPI anchor biosynthetic pathway is required for morphogenesis, cell wall integrity and pathogenicity in Leptosphaeria maculans.
