Novel Cadmium(II) Adipate Coordination Polymers with Structural Transformation via Oxalate Ligand: Syntheses, Structures and Fluorescence Properties

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 20 2004
Na Hao
Abstract Two novel cadmium adipate coordination polymers [Cd{O2C(CH2)4CO2}{1,10-phen}]n (1) and [Cd2(C2O4){O2C(CH2)4CO2(OH2)2}{2,2,-bipy}]·H2O (2) [adipic acid = HO2C(CH2)4CO2H] have been hydrothermally synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Crystallographic data for 1: monoclinic, C2/c, a = 16.186(3) Å, b = 15.487(3) Å, c = 14.052(3) Å, , = 112.73(3)°, Z = 8. Crystal data for 2: monoclinic, Cc, a = 23.448(5) Å, b = 11.826(2) Å, c = 8.3163(17) Å, , = 99.08(3)°, Z = 4. The structural analysis reveals that 1 forms a novel one-dimensional chain in which the binuclear Cd centers are linked by adipate anions. Compound 2 is the first example in which both a 2,2,-bipy ligand and an oxalate group are found in the {M/adipate} system. Compound 2 possesses one-dimensional sine- or cosine-type chains, which are alternately connected together by the oxalate group to form a three-dimensional framework. The structural determination reveals that the introduction of the oxalate ligand causes the dimensional transformation of the compounds. Compounds 1 and 2 show strong fluorescent properties at room temperature. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2004) [source]

Abstract The hydrothermal reaction of 1H -1,10-phenanthroline-2-one (Hophen), zinc acetate, benzoic acid (Hba), and triethylamine (3.0 mL) yields the tetranuclear complex [Zn4(,3 -OH)2(ophen)4(ba)2] (2), which features a chair-like Zn4(,3 -OH)2 cluster with two ba ligands centrosymmetrically oriented. [(OAc){Zn3(,3 -OH)(ophen)3}(ox){Zn3(,3 -OH)(ophen)3}(OAc)] (3; ox = oxalate) was isolated when less triethylamine (1.0 mL) was used. Two Zn3(,3 -OH)(ophen)3 clusters in 3 are linked together by an oxalate to form a dumbbell-like structure in which the acetate and oxalate ligands point outward from the Zn3(,3 -OH)(ophen)3 cluster with an acute bending angle. A geometric analysis reveals that Zn3(,3 -OH)(ophen)3 and dicarboxylate with an obtuse bending angle cannot form an infinite zigzag chain, whereas the ring isomer can. With isophthalate (ipa), thiophene-2,5-dicarboxylate (tda), and 4,4,-oxybis(benzoate) (oba) instead of the acetate of 3 three new complexes, namely [{Zn3(,3 -OH)(ophen)3}(ipa)2{Zn3(,3 -OH)(ophen)3}]·0.5H2O (4), [{Zn3(,3 -OH)(ophen)3}(tda)2{Zn3(,3 -OH)(ophen)3}] (5), and [{Zn3(,3 -OH)(ophen)3}(oba)2{Zn3(,3 -OH)(ophen)3}] (6), were obtained in which two Zn3(,3 -OH)(ophen)3 clusters are linked by a pair of ipa, tda, or oba ligands to form isostructural, cluster-based 2:2 metallomacrocycles. Photoluminescence studies of 2,6 revealed that their luminescent properties are derived from ophen-based ,-,* excited states. (© Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The structure of the title compound, [Zn4(C2O4)(PO4)2(H2O)2]n, which was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions, consists of zinc phosphate layers joined by bridging oxalate ligands to generate a three-dimensional framework. An extended zinc phosphate layer lies parallel to the ab plane and within this layer there are helical chains, composed of ZnO6 octahedra and ZnO5 square pyramids, that run parallel to the b axis and coincide with the 21 screw element. The oxalate groups sit on crystallographic inversion centers. [source]
