    Tourism demand modelling: some issues regarding unit roots, co-integration and diagnostic tests

    Abstract This paper investigates the all important issue of diagnostic tests, including unit roots and cointegration, in the tourism demand modelling literature. The origins of this study lie in the apparent lack in the tourism economics literature of detail concerning the diagnostic test aspect. Study of this deficiency has suggested that previous literature on tourism demand modelling may be divided into two categories: the pre-1995 and post-1995 studies. It was found that the pre-1995 and some post-1995 studies have ignored unit root tests and co-integration and, hence, are vulnerable to the so-called ,spurious regression' problem. In highlighting the key diagnostic tests reported by post-1995 studies, this paper contends that there is no need to report the autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH) test, which is applicable only to financial market analysis where the dependent variable is return on an asset. More generally, heteroskedasticity is not seen as a problem in time-series data. However, the reporting of a greater than necessary range of diagnostic tests,,,some of which do not have any theoretical justification with regard to tourism demand analysis,,,does not diminish the precision of the results or the model.     Financial volatility: an introduction

    It is now 20 years since the publication of Engle's (1982) seminal paper, which introduced ARCH to the world. The ARCH paper had an enormous influence on both theoretical and applied econometrics, and was influential in the establishment of the discipline of Financial Econometrics. In this paper we provide an introduction to the special issue on modelling and forecasting financial volatility, which commemorates the Twentieth Anniversary of the publication of ARCH. Financial econometrics has become a mature discipline over the last two decades, and one of its major research objects is the modelling and forecasting of volatility. This special issue presents ten papers, all of which focus on volatility and risk. The papers examine issues such as the new frontiers of volatility, the selection of models for observed and unobserved volatility, the potential long-memory property of volatility, and the measurement of volatility. The commonality of papers is that they do not examine the extant literature, which has been reviewed elsewhere, but rather outline a number of important issues that are not only of current interest, but are likely to remain so for many years to come.     Autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity in commodity spot prices

    Muth's (1961) rational expectations model of commodity markets implies that inventory carryover creates ARCH processes in prices. The model also indicates that the expected price variance is an explanatory variable in price regressions. Hypotheses were tested on price data of twenty commodities using a variation of Engle et al. (1987) ARCH,M technique. An ARCH process was found in storable and not in non-storable commodity data, as expected. However, changes in expected price variance have no significant impact on price.     Forecasting high-frequency financial data with the ARFIMA,ARCH model

    Abstract Financial data series are often described as exhibiting two non-standard time series features. First, variance often changes over time, with alternating phases of high and low volatility. Such behaviour is well captured by ARCH models. Second, long memory may cause a slower decay of the autocorrelation function than would be implied by ARMA models. Fractionally integrated models have been offered as explanations. Recently, the ARFIMA,ARCH model class has been suggested as a way of coping with both phenomena simultaneously. For estimation we implement the bias correction of Cox and Reid (1987). For daily data on the Swiss 1-month Euromarket interest rate during the period 1986,1989, the ARFIMA,ARCH (5,d,2/4) model with non-integer d is selected by AIC. Model-based out-of-sample forecasts for the mean are better than predictions based on conditionally homoscedastic white noise only for longer horizons (, > 40).     Are commodity prices chaotic?

    Abstract We conduct tests for the presence of low-dimensional chaotic structure in the futures prices of four important agricultural commodities. Though there is strong evidence of non-linear dependence, the evidence suggests that there is no long-lasting chaotic structure. The dimension estimates for the commodity futures series are generally much higher than would be for low dimension chaotic series. Our test results indicate that autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH)-type processes, with controls for seasonality and contract-maturity effects, explain much of the non-linearity in the data. We make a case that employing seasonally adjusted price series is important in obtaining robust results via some of the existing tests for chaotic structure. Finally, maximum likelihood methodologies, that are robust to the non-linear dynamics, lend strong support to the Samuelson hypothesis of maturity effects in futures price changes. [source]


    Evaluating Specification Tests for Markov-Switching Time-Series Models

    C12; C15; C22 Abstract., We evaluate the performance of several specification tests for Markov regime-switching time-series models. We consider the Lagrange multiplier (LM) and dynamic specification tests of Hamilton (1996) and Ljung,Box tests based on both the generalized residual and a standard-normal residual constructed using the Rosenblatt transformation. The size and power of the tests are studied using Monte Carlo experiments. We find that the LM tests have the best size and power properties. The Ljung,Box tests exhibit slight size distortions, though tests based on the Rosenblatt transformation perform better than the generalized residual-based tests. The tests exhibit impressive power to detect both autocorrelation and autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity (ARCH). The tests are illustrated with a Markov-switching generalized ARCH (GARCH) model fitted to the US dollar,British pound exchange rate, with the finding that both autocorrelation and GARCH effects are needed to adequately fit the data.     Minimum , -divergence estimation for arch models

    Abstract., This paper considers a minimum , -divergence estimation for a class of ARCH(p) models. For these models with unknown volatility parameters, the exact form of the innovation density is supposed to be unknown in detail but is thought to be close to members of some parametric family. To approximate such a density, we first construct an estimator for the unknown volatility parameters using the conditional least squares estimator given by Tjøstheim [Stochastic processes and their applications (1986) Vol. 21, pp. 251,273]. Then, a nonparametric kernel density estimator is constructed for the innovation density based on the estimated residuals. Using techniques of the minimum Hellinger distance estimation for stochastic models and residual empirical process from an ARCH(p) model given by Beran [Annals of Statistics (1977) Vol. 5, pp. 445,463] and Lee and Taniguchi [Statistica Sinica (2005) Vol. 15, pp. 215,234] respectively, it is shown that the proposed estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal. Moreover, a robustness measure for the score of the estimator is introduced. The asymptotic efficiency and robustness of the estimator are illustrated by simulations. The proposed estimator is also applied to daily stock returns of Dell Corporation. [source]


    Robust modelling of DTARCH models

    Summary, Autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (ARCH) models and its extensions are widely used in modelling volatility in financial time series. One of the variants, the double-threshold autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (DTARCH) model, has been proposed to model the conditional mean and the conditional variance that are piecewise linear. The DTARCH model is also useful for modelling conditional heteroscedasticity with nonlinear structures such as asymmetric cycles, jump resonance and amplitude-frequence dependence. Since asset returns often display heavy tails and outliers, it is worth studying robust DTARCH modelling without specific distribution assumption. This paper studies DTARCH structures for conditional scale instead of conditional variance. We examine L1 -estimation of the DTARCH model and derive limiting distributions for the proposed estimators. A robust portmanteau statistic based on the L1 -norm fit is constructed to test the model adequacy. This approach captures various nonlinear phenomena and stylized facts with desirable robustness. Simulations show that the L1 -estimators are robust against innovation distributions and accurate for a moderate sample size, and the proposed test is not only robust against innovation distributions but also powerful in discriminating the delay parameters and ARCH models. It is noted that the quasi-likelihood modelling approach used in ARCH models is inappropriate to DTARCH models in the presence of outliers and heavy tail innovations. [source]


    VOLATILITY FORECASTS, TRADING VOLUME, AND THE ARCH VERSUS OPTION-IMPLIED VOLATILITY TRADE-OFF

    Abstract We investigate empirically the role of trading volume (1) in predicting the relative informativeness of volatility forecasts produced by autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARCH) models versus the volatility forecasts derived from option prices, and (2) in improving volatility forecasts produced by ARCH and option models and combinations of models. Daily and monthly data are explored. We find that if trading volume was low during period t,1 relative to the recent past, ARCH is at least as important as options for forecasting future stock market volatility. Conversely, if volume was high during period t,1 relative to the recent past, option-implied volatility is much more important than ARCH for forecasting future volatility. Considering relative trading volume as a proxy for changes in the set of information available to investors, our findings reveal an important switching role for trading volume between a volatility forecast that reflects relatively stale information (the historical ARCH estimate) and the option-implied forward-looking estimate.     Value at risk and conditional extreme value theory via markov regime switching models

    This study develops a new conditional extreme value theory-based (EVT) model that incorporates the Markov regime switching process to forecast extreme risks in the stock markets. The study combines the Markov switching ARCH (SWARCH) model (which uses different sets of parameters for various states to cope with the structural changes for measuring the time-varying volatility of the return distribution) with the EVT to model the tail distribution of the SWARCH processed residuals. The model is compared with unconditional EVT and conditional EVT-GARCH models to estimate the extreme losses in three leading stock indices: S&P 500 Index, Hang Seng Index and Hang Seng China Enterprise Index. The study found that the EVT-SWARCH model outperformed both the GARCH and SWARCH models in capturing the non-normality and in providing accurate value-at-risk forecasts in the in-sample and out-sample tests. The EVTSWARCH model, which exhibits the features of measuring the volatility of a heteroscedastic financial return series and coping with the non-normality owing to structural changes, can be an alternative measure of the tail risk. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     AN EPR AND ISOTOPIC STUDY OF THE MARBLES OF THE TRAJAN's ARCH AT ANCONA: AN EXAMPLE OF ALLEGED HYMETTIAN PROVENANCE,

    The provenance of 20 marble samples drawn from the Trajan's arch at Ancona, which is supposed to be made of Greek, Hymettian marble, has been established on the basis of the independent use of EPR and isotopic data. The results of the two methods are in good agreement and unequivocally indicate a Proconnesian provenance. Sixteen samples are assigned to this site, whereas two are classified as untypical Proconnesian samples and the remaining two are assigned an unlikely Parian provenance. No indication exists for a possible Hymettian origin of the marbles. A multi-method approach, which employs all of the experimental variables simultaneously, demonstrates that the 18 samples identified as Proconnesian belong to several different quarrying areas within the site. This result is taken as an indication that the Proconnesian quarries were run following a highly organized, semi-industrial production model. The origin of the Hymettian/Proconnesian misunderstanding and the possible misclassification of other Roman monuments in Italy are briefly commented on. [source]


    FINANCIAL CRISES AND INTERNATIONAL STOCK MARKET VOLATILITY TRANSMISSION

    This paper examines the interplay between stock market returns and their volatility, focusing on the Asian and global financial crises of 1997,98 and 2008,09 for Australia, Singapore, the UK, and the US. We use a multivariate generalised autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (MGARCH) model and weekly data (January 1992,June 2009). Based on the results obtained from the mean return equations, we could not find any significant impact on returns arising from the Asian crisis and more recent global financial crises across these four markets. However, both crises significantly increased the stock return volatilities across all of the four markets. Not surprisingly, it is also found that the US stock market is the most crucial market impacting on the volatilities of smaller economies such as Australia. Our results provide evidence of own and cross ARCH and GARCH effects among all four markets, suggesting the existence of significant volatility and cross volatility spillovers across all four markets. A high degree of time-varying co-volatility among these markets indicates that investors will be highly unlikely to benefit from diversifying their financial portfolio by acquiring stocks within these four countries only.     Effect of Dipotassium Clorazepate on Ainygdaloid-Kiiidling and Comparison Between Amygdaloid- and Hippocampal-Kindled Seizures in Rats

    Purpose: We reportcd previously that dipotassium clorazcpate (potassium 7-chloro-2, 3-dihydro-2-oxo-S-phcnyI- l H- l, 4-bcnzodiazepinc-3-carboxylate potassium hydroxide: DC), an antianxiety drug, suppressed hippocampel kindled scizures in rats i n a dose-dependent manner (Amano et al. Psychiatry Clin Neuroscienccs 1998; 52: 459,462). Its effect on kindling, howcver, has not been evaluated. Moreover, differcnces in the anticonvulsive effccts of conventional anticonvulsants bctween amygdaloid-and hippocampal-kindlcd seizures have becn reportcd (Kamci et al. Arch. Int. Pharmacodyn I98 1; 249: 164,176). To clarify the anticonvulsive propcrties of DC, we examined its effects on amygdaloid kindling and compared it for 7 succcssive days against amygdaloid- and hippocampal-kindled seizures using thc rat kindling model of epilcpsy. Methods: Adult inale Wistar rata weighing 220,330 g werc used. Electrodes were implanted stereotaxically into thc left basoiatcfiil amygdala or the left dorsal hippocampus under pcntobarhital ancsthesia. Expcriment 1: Anticonvulsive effect on amygdaloid-kindled seizurcs. Rats having >5 consecutive stage-5 seimrcs were htimulated at the generalizcd seizure-triggering threshold (GST) intensity 30 minutes after i.p. administration or DC or saline. Experiment 2: Effect on amygdala kindling. In other groups of Tiits, the amygdala was stimulated once daily following 30 minutes i.p. administration or DC at 5 mg/kg or saline until the first stage-5 seizure was attained. Experimcnt 3: Comparison of anticonvulsive effect bctween amygdaloid- and hippocampal-kindled scizures. In other groups of rats having 5 consecutive stage-5 seizures, the GST was determined. Furthermorc, rats having >I0 stage-5 scizures induced at thc GST intensity were testcd once a day for 7 consecutive days. Thc stimulation was delivercd 30 minutes aftcr i.p. administration of DC or saline. Results: Expcriment I: DC suppresscd amygdaloid-kindled scizures in a dose-depcndent manner. Significant reduction of aftcr-discharge duration compared with the control group was observed at dosagcs of 2 mg/kg or more, hut complete suppression of after-discharges was observed in only I of 7 sessions at the highcst dose. Expcriment 2: Thc number of stimulations rcquired for the first stage-5 seiiurc in the 5 mg/kg dosage group was 14.1+1.4 stimulations, which was significantly greater than the 10.2+1.7 stimulations in the control group (P4.01). The contralateral cortical afterdischarge duration i n the DC treated group was signilicantly shortcr than thc afterdischarge duration in the amygdala at the first 7 stimulations, whereas it was significantly shorter only the first 3 stimulations i n the control group. Experiment 3: DC suppressed amygdaloid-kindled seizures at 2 and 5 mg/kg, whcreas I mg/kg or morc suppresscd hippocampal-kindlcd seizures. Conclusions: Thc result of the present study suggcst that thc principal anticonvulsive cffect of DC is likely to be relatcd mainly to attenuation of propagation of scizure activity rather than to an elevatcd seizure threshold, which may support our previously findings that increased stimulus intensity could not complctcly reverse thc anticonvulsive effects of DC. Thus, differences in effective dosages in both amygdaloid- and hippocampal-kindled seizures may suggcst a difference in the neuronal mechanisms that arc cvolved in this kindling. The present study dcmonstratcd that DC has a modest anticonvulsive effect without serious adverse effccts, which indicates thc clinical uscfulness of DC for treatment intractable epilepsy. [source]

    Characteristics of skin aging in Korean men and women

    Introduction Korea is located between Japan and Mainland China. The people of these three countries have similar appearances and it is difficult to differentiate between them. Although the population of Asia is more than half of the total population of the Earth, the inherent characteristics of Asian skin have not been well investigated. Commercial markets for cosmetics and drugs for photoaged skin are rapidly expanding in many Asian countries. Therefore, many investigators in the field of dermatology and cosmetology have become interested in brown Asian skin. Clinical characteristics of skin aging and photoaging in Asians Skin aging can be divided into two basic processes: intrinsic aging and photoaging [1]. Intrinsic aging is characterized by smooth, dry, pale, and finely wrinkled skin, whereas photoaging, which indicates premature skin aging in chronically photodamaged skin, is characterized by severe wrinkling and irregular pigmentation. The pattern of wrinkling in Asians seems to differ from that in Caucasians. Asians have coarser, thicker and deep wrinkles, particularly in the forehead, perioral and Crow's foot areas. In contrast, Caucasians usually have relatively fine cheek and Crow's foot wrinkles. The reasons for these differences are not known and need further investigation. There are racial, ethnic and genetic differences, and differences of skin structure and function, between the brown skin of Asians and the white skin of Caucasians. As Asian skin is more pigmented, acute and chronic cutaneous responses to UV irradiation differ from those in white skin. Many people believe, based on clinical impressions, that the main process of photoaging in Asians involves pigmentary changes, rather than wrinkling. However, no study has been performed to confirm this belief. Risk factors for skin wrinkles and their relative risks in Korean skin [2] Various factors such as age, sun-exposure, and smoking are known to be important risk factors for wrinkles. However, the relative risks of each factor on wrinkles in the brown skin of Asians have not been investigated, and they could differ from those in Caucasians. An evaluation system for skin wrinkling is necessary for Asian skin [3]. Thus, we developed an eight-point photographic scale for assessing wrinkles in both Korean genders [2]. This scale can probably be applied to the populations of other Asian countries, at least to the Japanese and Chinese. The pattern of wrinkles in both genders appears to be similar. Age Age is an important risk factor for wrinkling in Asians, as in Caucasians. Korean subjects in their 60s showed a 12-fold increased risk of wrinkling, while subjects in their 70s have a 56-fold increased risk compared with young age group. UV light It is well known that the UV component in sunlight can cause and accelerate photoaging. The pigmented skin of Asian may better protect skin from acute and chronic UV damage. However, we found a strong association between sun-exposure and the development of wrinkling in Koreans. It was found that sun exposure of more than 5 h per day was associated with a 4.8-fold increased risk in wrinkling versus less than 2 h of sun-exposure in Koreans. Estrogen deficiency Korean females have more wrinkles than men, after controlling for age, sun exposure, and smoking, it was found that they have a 3.6-fold increased risk of developing wrinkles than their male counterparts [2]. It has also been reported, that the relative risk for wrinkling in women is higher than in men as for in white Caucasians [4]. The reason why women show more wrinkles remains to be determined. It is possible that a reduction in skin collagen because of estrogen deficiency in postmenopausal woman may aggravate wrinkling severity. Korean women with more than 10 years since menopause showed a 3.9-fold higher risk of wrinkling than the women 5 years of beyond menopause [5]. We demonstrated that women with a history of HRT have a significantly lower risk, more specifically, one fifth of the risk of facial wrinkling relative to those who had no history of HRT. Interestingly, we found that wrinkle severity significantly increased with an increasing number of full term pregnancies. The relative risk for severe wrinkling is increased by approximately 1.8-fold per full term pregnancy. Smoking It is known that smoking causes skin wrinkling in Caucasians, and that it plays no role in Blacks [6, 7]. Koreans with have a smoking history of more than 30 pack years showed a more than 2.8-fold increased risk of wrinkles [2]. The relative risks of wrinkles associated with a 30,50 pack-years history of smoking were 2.8- and 5.5-fold, respectively. Dyspigmentation in Asian skin To follow pigmentary changes, six photographic standards for both genders were developed for Korean skin, to produce a 6-point scale [2, 8]. Hyperpigmented spots, mostly lentigines, were prominent among women, while seborrheic keratosis tended to be more prominent in men. Seborrheic keratosis in Korean men Seborrheic keratoses (SKs) are benign cutaneous tumors. They have diverse clinical and histopathological appearances and are very common in the elderly (over 50 years old). The etiology of SKs is not well understood, although patients with a great number of lesionsshow a familial trait with an autosomal dominant pattern, and human papilloma virus has been suggested as possible cause because of verrucous appearance of the lesions. Exposure to sunlight has been suggested to be a risk factor for SKs. However, there is still some debate in terms of the role of sunlight. Recently, we have investigated the clinical characteristics of SKs and relationship between SKs and sunlight exposure in Korean males [9]. The prevalence of SKs in Koreans increases with age; it rose from 78.9% at 40 years, to 93.9% at 50 years and 98.7% in those over 60 years. Exposed areas, i.e. the face, neck and dorsum of the hands, demonstrate a significant increase in the prevalence of SKs by decade, whereas partly exposed areas, although SKs tended to increase in prevalence with age, this trend was not significant. When the estimated body surface area (BSA) is taken into account, the number of SKs on both the face and dorsum of the hands (0.51 ± 0.08 per 1% BSA) was over-represented compared with the trunk. SKs were also concentrated on the neck (0.38 ± 0.07 per 1% BSA) and in the V-area (0.47 ± 0.09 per 1% BSA). Outer forearms also showed 3-fold more SKs per unit area than neighboring arms and inner forearms, which are classified as partly exposed area (0.09 ± 0.02, 0.03 ± 0.01, respectively). The total area covered by SKs on exposed area also became significantly larger with aging than on intermittently exposed areas. These results indicate that exposure to sunlight might be related to SK growth. Our results indicated that excessive sun exposure is an independent risk factor of SKs. After controlling for age, smoking, and skin type, subjects with a sun exposure history of more than 6 hours per day showed a 2.28-fold increased risk of having severe SKs (n , 6) compared with those exposed for less that 3 h per day. These findings indicated that sun-exposure may play an important role in SK development. In summary, SKs are very common in Korean males and represent one of the major pigmentary problems. SKs concentrate on exposed skin, especially on the face and dorsum of the hands. Both age and lifetime cumulative sunlight exposure are important contributing factors and may work in a synergistic manner. Conclusion Many people tend to believe that wrinkles are not a prominent feature of Asian photoaged skin, and that dyspigmentation is a major manifestation in Asian skin. Contrary to this impression, wrinkling is also a major problem in the photoaged skin of Asians, and Korean people showing severe pigmentary changes usually tend to have severe wrinkles. In conclusion, the wrinkling patterns and pigmentary changes of photoaged skin in East Asians differ from those of Caucasians, and the relative risks of aggravating factors may be different from those of Caucasian skin.     Influence of environmental stress on skin tone, color and melanogenesis in Japanese skin

    Introduction It is needless to say that one of the most potent environmental stress for melanogenesis of the human skin is the effect of ultraviolet (UV) light from the sunlight. Characteristic skin aging as a result of this UV light is recognized as photoaging. Clinical features in photoaging are wrinkles, skin laxity, coarseness, leathery, yellowing, lentigenes, mottled pigmentation, telangiectasia, sebaceous hypertrophy and purpura. There is an apparent difference in clinical features in photoaging among different races, i.e. between Caucasians, African American and Asians that include Japanese. Not only photo skin type but also environmental factors, such as climate, latitude, altitude and their habit of sunbathing, smoking and skin care influence the characteristic development of their photoaging. Racial difference in photoaging Caucasians tend to develop skin laxity and fine wrinkles more than Asians [1]. Asians tend to produce coarser wrinkles than the Caucasians although their development is rather late in life. There is also a difference in the skin color. Pigmentation is an earliest and prominent skin changes in Asians [1] and it increases with age [2]. In contrast, pigmentation is not apparent in the Caucasians although redness probably because of an increase in cutaneous vascularization becomes prominent in middle aged Caucasians [2]. Chung reported that seborrheic keratosis is a major pigmentary lesion in men, whereas hyperpigmented macules are prominent features in women in Koreans [3]. Melanogenesis pigmentation disorders in Japanese Ephelides (freckles) are commonly found in those with photo skin type I who have fair skin and red eyes and blond hair. They are also found in the Japanese. Clinical feature reveals that multiple small pigmentary macules on sun-exposed areas mainly on the mid-portion of the face. These lesions seem to be familial, becoming apparent even in early childhood after sun exposure. Melasma is an acquired pigmentary disorder commonly found in middle aged Japanese women characterized by irregular brown macules and patches on the sun-exposed areas on the face typically as bilaterally present macules on the cheeks. An increase in sex hormones as a result of pregnancy and intake of contraceptive pills is one of the etiological factors to develop melasma. Sun exposure also worsens it. Nevus of Ota is also a common pigmentary disorder found in the Japanese. It is usually unilateral, blue-brown to slate-gray pigmentary macules on the eyelid and cheek that appear in early childhood or in puberty. Acquired dermal melanocytosis is also a pigmentary disorder, in which dermal melanocytes are found as shown in nevus of Ota, characterized by bilateral brown to blue-gray macules on the forehead, temple, eyelid and malar areas in middle aged Japanese women. This tends to be misdiagnosed as melasma. Solar lentigo is an acquired pigmented macule induced by sun exposure. Solar lentigines are usually multiple, circumscribed brown macules. There are two types of solar lentigo. One is a small macular type, characterized by multiple, small brown macules whose diameter is less than 5 mm, being similar to ephelides (freckles). The other type is a large macular type, characterized by a few round to oval, brown macules whose diameter is beyond 1 cm. Some of their surface are hyperkeratotic and become elevated to produce seborrheic keratosis. Again, the early sign of photoaging in Japanese is pigmentated spots and these pigmentation disorders increase with age. Among the pigmentary changes, nevus of Ota, acquired dermal melanocytosis, melasma and large macular type of solar lentigo are characteristic skin changes found in the Japanese in addition to ephelides and small macular type of solar lentigo. Seasonal changes of the various functional properties of the skin including skin color assessed by non-invasive bioengineering techniques [4]. When we consider skin tone, color and melanogenesis, UV light from the sunlight is the most potent environmental stress, although we cannot forget also the important influence of environmental relative humidity affects our skin functions as well as its appearance. We investigated seasonal influences on the various properties of the skin in 39 healthy Japanese females consisting of different age groups. Their skin is thought to be affected by the UV light in summer, and by the exposure to the dry and cold air in winter. Materials and methods Biophysical, non-invasive measurements, including transepidermal water loss (TEWL) as a parameter for the barrier function of the stratum corneum (SC), high frequency conductance as a parameter for the hydration state of the SC, skin color and casual surface lipid levels, were conducted during late summer and winter months. Skin color was determined with a chromameter according to the L*a*b* CIE 1976 system, where L* is an attribute on the luminance scale, a* that on the red versus green scale and b* that on the yellow versus blue scale. All the measurements were conducted in an environment controlled-chamber (21 ± 1 °C room temperature, and 50 ± 3% relative humidity). Results The barrier function of the SC was found to be significantly impaired in winter on the cheek as compared with that measured in summer, whereas no such seasonal change was apparent both in the hydration state of the SC and sebum levels on the cheek. In the assessment of the skin color on the cheek, a significant increase in a* (redness) and a decrease in b* (yellowness) were observed in winter. In contrast, on the flexor forearm, the values of L* (luminescence) increased in winter, but no seasonal change was noted in the values of a* and b*. In this study, skin changes with aging were also found by the non-invasive bioengineering methods. The value of TEWL on the cheek tended to increase with age, whereas no significant change was observed in the value of TEWL on the forearm. In the assessment of skin color, b* value on the cheek significantly increased with age whereas a* and L* values on the cheek did not show any significant change with age. Summary of this study We think that such an increase in yellowness with aging of the cheek skin is a phenomenon unique to the Japanese (Asians) since an increase in b* value was not observed in Caucasians [2]. The facial skin that is always exposed shows barrier impairment in a dry and cold winter environment and demonstrates increased yellowness in skin color because of a prolonged exposure to the UV light from the sun in the summer season.     Coarctation of a Right Aortic Arch

    We report of a 4-year-old boy who presented with a history of a stenotic bicuspid aortic valve who upon further evaluation was found to have a coarctation of a right-sided aortic arch. The frequency with which other anomalies exist in either of the above conditions requires thorough cardiac evaluation and detailed imaging.     Improved treatment of sudden hearing loss by specific fibrinogen aphaeresis

    Abstract The etiology of sudden sensorineural hearing loss is still unclear and is thought to result from disturbances of microcirculation, infectious causes, or autoimmune disorders. So far standard therapy did not show clear improvement over spontaneous remission rate, which is assumed to be about 50% [Nakashima et al., Acta. Otolaryngol. Stockh. 514:14,16, 1994; Schuknecht and Donovan, Arch. Otorhinolaryngol. 243:1,15, 1986; Harris and Sharp, Laryngoscope 100:516,524, 1990; Mayot et al., Clin. Immunol. Immunopath. 68:41,45, 1993; Gussen, Ann. Otol. Rhinol. Laryngol. 85:94,100, 1976]. Elevated blood viscosity due to high fibrinogen levels is supposed to cause decreased cochlear blood flow and thus initiate sudden hearing loss. The specific lowering of fibrinogen immediately decreases plasma viscosity exactly to the desired extent and should lead to improved cochlear blood flow [Suckfüll et al., Acta. Otolaryngol 119:763,766, 1999; Suckfüll, Lancet 360:1811,1817, 2002; Walch et al., Laryngol. Rhino. Otol. 75:641,645, 1996; Suckfüll et al., Otol. Neurotol. 23:309,311, 2002]. In a prospective uncontrolled pilot study on 36 patients with unilateral sudden onset sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) we tried to establish that 1,3 specific fibrinogen aphaereses alone improve recovery of hearing and that it is possible to lower fibrinogen to the target of 80,100 mg/dl without important side effects. Pure tone audiometry was carried out immediately before and after each aphaeresis as well as at 2 and 4 weeks and 6 months after treatment. Sixteen patients recovered spontaneously before undergoing fibrinogen adsorption. All 20 aphaeresis patients improved during immunoadsorption; in 60% of patients auditory thresholds returned to normal after the first immunoadsorption and treatment could be discontinued, in another 20% of patients complete recovery was reached after 4 weeks. The mean plasma fibrinogen concentration of the 20 patients before the first aphaeresis session was 308.1 ± 51.5 mg/dl. Immediately after the first treatment session, the fibrinogen concentration was lowered to 100.7 ± 25.3 mg/dl (P < 0.001). The second and third sessions also showed highly significant reductions in plasma fibrinogen. No important side effects were seen. In conclusion, specific fibrinogen adsorption is a promising new treatment modality that should be tested in a prospective, randomized controlled trial in patients with sudden hearing loss. J. Clin.     KINETICS OF HYDROCARBON GAS GENERATION FROM MARINE KEROGEN AND OIL: IMPLICATIONS FOR THE ORIGIN OF NATURAL GASES IN THE HETIANHE GASFIELD, TARIM BASIN, NW CHINA

    In this paper we derive kinetic parameters for the generation of gaseous hydrocarbons (C1-5) and methane (C1) from closed-system laboratory pyrolysis of selected samples of marine kerogen and oil from the SW Tarim Basin. The activation energy distributions for the generation of both C1-5 (Ea = 59-72kcal, A = 1.0×1014 s,1) and C1 (Ea = 61-78kcal, A = 6.06×1014 s,1) hydrocarbons from the marine oil are narrower than those for the generation of these hydrocarbons from marine kerogen (Ea = 50-74kcal, A = 1.0×1014 s,1 for C1-5; and Ea = 48-72kcal, A=3.9×1013 s,1 for C1, respectively). Using these kinetic parameters, both the yields and timings of C1-5 and C1 hydrocarbons generated from Cambrian source rocks and from in-reservoir cracking of oil in Ordovician strata were predicted for selected wells along a north-south profile in the SW of the basin. Thermodynamic conditions for the cracking of oil and kerogen were modelled within the context of the geological framework. It is suggested that marine kerogen began to crack at temperatures of around 120°C (or 0.8 %Ro) and entered the gas window at 138°C (or 1.05 %Ro); whereas the marine oil began to crack at about 140 °C (or 1.1 %Ro) and entered the gas window at 158 °C (or 1.6%Ro). The main geological controls identified for gas accumulations in the Bachu Arch (Southwest Depression, SW Tarim Basin) include the remaining gas potential following Caledonian uplift; oil trapping and preservation in basal Ordovician strata; the extent of breaching of Ordovician reservoirs; and whether reservoir burial depths are sufficiently deep for oil cracking to have occurred. In the Maigaiti Slope and Southwest Depression, the timing of gas generation was later than that in the Bachu Arch, with much higher yields and generation rates, and hence better prospects for gas exploration. It appears from the gas generation kinetics that the primary source for the gases in the Hetianhe gasfield was the Southwest Depression. [source]


    Mechanism of the formation of singularities for quasilinear hyperbolic systems with linearly degenerate characteristic fields

    Abstract One often believes that there is no shock formation for the Cauchy problem of quasilinear hyperbolic systems (of conservation laws) with linearly degenerate characteristic fields. It has been a conjecture for a long time (see Arch. Rational Mech. Anal. 2004; 172:65,91; Compressible Fluid Flow and Systems of Conservation Laws in Several Space Variables. Springer: New York, 1984) and it is still an open problem in the general situation up to now. In this paper, a framework to justify this conjecture is proposed, and, by means of the concept such as the strict block hyperbolicity, the part richness and the successively block-closed system, some general kinds of quasilinear hyperbolic systems, which verify the conjecture, are given.     Double Aortic Arch in a Dog (Canis Familiaris): a Case Report

    We herein report a case of a double aortic arch in a 10-week-old male dog of no defined race, which presented episodes of regurgitation at the time of weaning. This vascular malformation was characterized by the persistence of two aortic arches, right and left, of varying dimensions. The right aortic arch was observed to be larger. During post mortem examination the vessels of the animal were injected with coloured latex bi-centrifuged CIS I-4 polisopreno which revealed the patency of the two aortic arches. Concomitantly, dilation of the cranial oesophagus causing constriction was observed, indicating megaesophagus. Apart from the constriction, the oesophagus presented normal morphometric parameters in relation to its dimensions. [source]


    Mechanisms of organophosphate resistance in a field population of oriental migratory locust, Locusta migratoria manilensis (Meyen)

    Abstract The susceptibilities to three organophosphate (OP) insecticides (malathion, chlorpyrifos, and phoxim), responses to three metabolic synergists [triphenyl phosphate (TPP), piperonyl butoxide (PBO), and diethyl maleate (DEM)], activities of major detoxification enzymes [general esterases (ESTs), glutathione S -transferases (GSTs), and cytochrome P450 monooxygenases (P450s)], and sensitivity of the target enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) were compared between a laboratory-susceptible strain (LS) and a field-resistant population (FR) of the oriental migratory locust, Locusta migratoria manilensis (Meyen). The FR was significantly resistant to malathion (57.5-fold), but marginally resistant to chlorpyrifos (5.4) and phoxim (2.9). The malathion resistance of the FR was significantly diminished by TPP (synergism ratio: 16.2) and DEM (3.3), but was unchanged by PBO. In contrast, none of these synergists significantly affected the toxicity of malathion in the LS. Biochemical studies indicated that EST and GST activities in the FR were 2.1- to 3.2-fold and 1.2- to 2.0-fold, respectively, higher than those in the LS, but there was no significant difference in P450 activity between the LS and FR. Furthermore, AChE from the FR showed 4.0-fold higher activity but was 3.2-, 2.2-, and 1.1-fold less sensitive to inhibition by malaoxon, chlorpyrifos-oxon, and phoxim, respectively, than that from the LS. All these results clearly indicated that the observed malathion resistance in the FR was conferred by multiple mechanisms, including increased detoxification by ESTs and GSTs, and increased activity and reduced sensitivity of AChE to OP inhibition.     Changes in hemocytes of Plutella xylostella after parasitism by Diadegma semiclausum

    Abstract We examined the changes of hemocytes in the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), due to parasitism by the endoparasitoid Diadegma semiclausum (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae). Necrosis of prohemocytes in different stages was observed while cell death was absent in the mature hemocytes in the parasitized larvae, which was related to the declined total hemocyte count per microliter (THC). THC in the host hemolymph declined sharply by 12,h post-parasitization and then remained at a low level. When hemocytes of the parasitized larvae were cultured in vitro, encapsulation ability was suppressed coincidently with the inhibited spreading ability; however, such effects were transient. Simultaneously, activation of the prophenoloxidae from the hemocytes was inhibited. Unlike the results of previous studies, the decrease in hemocytes, which was due to the necrosis of the prohemocytes instead of the mature hemocytes in our study, was not responsible for the impaired encapsulation. Our studies suggest that parasitism by D. semiclausum have some effects on hematopoietic regulation and on hemocyte immune reaction of P. xylostella larvae. Arch. Insect Biochem.     Biochemical characterization of rab proteins from Bombyx mori,

    Abstract The small GTPases known as Rab proteins are key regulators of membrane trafficking. We used RT-PCR to isolate cDNA clones of insect-specific Rab proteins (BRabN1 and BRabN2) showing low homology with known Rab proteins from other animals, from mRNA of Bombyx mori. These 2 Rabs were produced in Escherichia coli and purified. BRabN1 bound [3H]-GDP and [35S]-GTP,S with dissociation constants of 0.087 × 10,6,M and 1.02 × 10,6,M, respectively, whereas those of BRabN2 were 0.546 × 10,6,M and 1.02 × 10,6,M, respectively. Binding of [35S]-GTP,S to BRabN1 and N2 was inhibited by GDP and GTP. The GTP-hydrolysis activities of BRabN1 and N2 were 154 and 35.5,mmol/min/mole, respectively, and bound [35S]-GTP,S was exchanged efficiently with GTP. BRabN1 also showed ATPase activity and exchange of [35S]-GTP,S with ATP. Monoclonal antibodies against BRabN1 and N2 did not recognize any other Rab proteins, and Western blotting using the anti-BRabN1 antibody revealed a single band in the testis of B. mori. These results suggest that BRabN1 and N2 of B. mori bind GTP, convert from the GTP-bound state to the GDP-bound state by intrinsic GTP hydrolysis activity, and return to the GTP-bound state with the exchange, and that BRabN1 is specifically expressed in testis.     Interaction of proteins involved in ecdysone and juvenile hormone signal transduction,

    Abstract Ecdysteroids and juvenile hormones (JH) regulate a variety of developmental, physiological, behavioral, and metabolic processes. Ecdysteroids function through a heterodimeric complex of two nuclear receptors, ecdysone receptor (EcR) and ultraspiracle (USP). An 85 kDa protein identified in Drosophila melanogaster methoprene-tolerant (Met) mutant binds to JH III with high affinity, and the mutant flies are resistant to juvenile hormone analog (JHA), methoprene. Reporter assays using the yeast two-hybrid system were performed in order to study the molecular interactions between EcR, USP and Met. As expected, EcR fused to the B42 activation domain and USP fused to the LexA DNA binding domain interacted with each other and supported induction of the reporter gene in the presence of stable ecdysteroid analog, RG-102240 or steroids, muristerone A and ponasterone A. The USP:USP homodimers supported expression of the reporter gene in the absence of ligand, and there was no significant increase in the reporter activity after addition of a JHA, methoprene. Similarly, Met:Met homodimers as well as Met:EcR and Met:USP heterodimers induced reporter activity in the absence of ligand and addition of ecdysteroid or JH analogs did not increase the reporter activity regulated by either homodimers or heterodimers of Met protein. Two-hybrid assays in insect cells and in vitro pull-down assays confirmed the interaction of Met with EcR and USP. These data suggest that the proteins that are involved in signal transduction of ecdysteroids (EcR and USP) and juvenile hormones (Met) interact to mediate cross-talk between these two important hormones.     Identification of a novel bursicon-regulated transcriptional regulator, md13379, in the house fly Musca domestica,

    Abstract Bursicon is a neuropeptide that regulates cuticle sclerotization (hardening and tanning) and wing expansion in insects via a G-protein coupled receptor. The hormone consists of , and , subunits. In the present study, we cloned bursicon , and , genes in the house fly Musca domestica using 3' and 5' RACE and expressed the recombinant bursicon (rbursicon) heterodimer in mammalian 293 cells and insect HighfiveTM cells. The rbursicon displayed a strong bursicon activity in the neck-ligated house fly assay. Using rbursicon, we identified and cloned a novel bursicon-regulated gene in M. domestica encoding a transcriptional regulator homologous to ataxin-7-like3 in human, CG13379 in Drosophila and sgf11 in yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We named the gene md13379. Both ataxin-7-like3 and sgf11 are a novel subunit of the SAGA (Spt-Ada-Gcn5-Acetyltransferase) complex that is involved in regulation of gene transcription. Real-time PCR analysis of temporal response profile revealed that the level of md13379 transcript was up-regulated by 6.6 fold 1,h after rbursicon injection, which correlates well with the cuticle sclerotization process observed in the rbursicon-injected flies. The composite data suggest that md13379 plays a role in regulating the expression of bursicon-regulated genes involved in the cuticle sclerotization process. Arch. Insect Biochem.     Abstract Polygalacturonase (PG) activity found in the salivary gland apparatus of the western tarnished plant bug (WTPB, Lygus hesperus Knight) has been thought to be the main chemical cause of the damage inflicted by this mirid when feeding on its plant hosts. Early viscosity and thermal stability studies of the PG activity in L. hesperus protein extracts were difficult to interpret. Thus, it has been suggested that one or more PG protein(s) with different hydrolytic modes of action are produced by this mirid. In order to understand the quantitative complexity of the WTPB salivary PG activity, PG purification from a protein extract from salivary glands excised from L. hesperus insects was performed using affinity and ion exchange chromatography. To elucidate the qualitative complexity of the purified PGs, the digestion products generated by the PGs were separated using high performance anion exchange chromatography with pulsed amperometric detection. At least five PG proteins were detected; these differing in terms of their glycosylation, mass-to-charge ratios, and/or molecular mass. The characterization of the products generated by these PGs showed that endo- and exo-acting PGs are produced by WTPB. Although none of the PGs was purified to homogeneity, the present work provides biochemical evidence of a multiplicity of PGs that degrade the pectin component of the plant tissue in different fashions. The implications of these findings affect the understanding of WTPB feeding damage and, potentially, help identify ways to control this important crop pest. Arch. Insect Biochem.
