RHEOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF CRYSTALLIZED HONEY PREPARED BY A NEW TYPE OF NUCLEI

ABSTRACT Good spreadability is a highly desirable quality for crystallized honey used in product applications. In this study, we processed Taiwanese liquid litchi honey into crystallized honey by adding a new nuclei material, namely 0.1% (w/w) glucose powder, instead of the traditional 5,10% (w/w) natural nuclei. Rheological properties of the resulting product were determined during heating and cooling utilizing small amplitude oscillatory shear to assess spreadability. As the product was heated, it exhibited decreased consistency and improved fluidity (evidenced by decreasing storage modulus [G,] and loss modulus [G,] values) and three distinct regions within the G,curve ("softening,""crystalline plateau" and "melting"). As the product was cooled from 55 to 0C, moduli were lower than those obtained during heating, and the product did not exhibit the three G,curve regions across the temperature range. Therefore, we observed incomplete reversible crystallization and rheological properties during temperature migration. Flow properties of crystallized honey in the 0,25C temperature range could be successfully predicted using the Herschel,Bulkley model (R2 > 0.97). However, the product approached Newtonian flow behavior as temperatures neared the upper end of this range. Higher viscosity and lower yield stress were observed at temperatures below 15C. The crystallized honey developed for this study exhibited shear-thinning properties desirable in honey products intended to be spread. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Crystallized honey is traditionally prepared by introducing 5,10% natural nuclei into liquid honey. Our lab developed a new method that replaces the natural nuclei with glucose powder, which, at 0.1% (w/w), produces a good quality creamed honey that, in commercial production, offers the potential for significant production cost advantages. As crystallized honey is used in commercial/consumer applications as a spread, its dynamic rheology is of both academic and industrial interest. In this study, we discuss the physical properties of the crystallized honey developed using glucose powder to help better identify the factors and variables involved in honey spreadability and thus facilitate the development of better honey products with more desirable spreadability profiles. This study also provides a rheological properties and spreadability database for crystallized honey that reflects the range of temperature changes that can be expected to occur during normal product storage and use. A New Type of Bismuth Electrode for Electrochemical Stripping Analysis Based on the Ammonium Tetrafluorobismuthate Bulk-Modified Carbon Paste

Abstract A carbon paste electrode bulk-modified with ammonium tetrafluorobismuthate (BiF4 -CPE) was developed and examined in the anodic stripping voltammetric mode for measurement of selected trace heavy metals. The BiF4 -CPE has revealed a favorable performance in more acidic solutions (pH,0.5,2.5) in the presence of dissolved oxygen for Cd(II) and Pb(II) as model metal ions at the low ,g L,1 concentration level. In comparison with the bismuth-oxide bulk-modified carbon paste electrode and the other two bismuth film-plated carbonaceous substrate electrodes examined, the BiF4 -CPE proved to be another attractive variant of the environmentally friendly bismuth-based electrodes, particularly convenient for analysis of acidified water samples. 1-Alkoxyamino-2-nitroalkanes as Key Building Blocks for a Chemo- and Diastereoselective Synthesis of a New Type of Polyfunctionalized N -Alkoxypiperidine

Abstract A highly efficient conversion of ,-nitrostyrenes into a new kind of functionalized N -alkoxy-2-hydroxypiperidine in two steps was developed, giving excellent yields and diastereoselectivity. The prepared compounds are the first examples of N -alkoxy-2-hydroxypiperidines. The synthetic approach involved the conjugate addition of alkoxyamines to ,-nitrostyrenes, followed by Michael addition of the isolated nitroalkoxyamines to ,,,-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, and intramolecular addition of the alkoxyamino group to the carbonyl functionality of the (non-isolated) adducts. Although three stereogenic centers are formed, only one diastereoisomer was detected. This unprecedented sequence of reactions can also be performed in a one-pot fashion. [source]


Synthesis of a New Type of Glycosidic Linkage: Acetal-Linked Disaccharides and Trisaccharides of Acyclic and Cyclic Sugars,

Abstract New types of di- and trisaccharides related to a unique trisaccharide present in the cell walls of Proteus have been synthesized by coupling of acyclic sugar dithioacetals and di- and monohydroxy cyclic sugars. In this class of compounds an acyclic sugar is linked to a cyclic sugar through an acetal linkage. The formation of these acetal-linked pseudodi- and-trisaccharides has been achieved by a generalized reaction procedure mediated by 1,3-dibromo-5,5-dimethylhydantoin under mild, metal-free and neutral conditions. Abstract Dehydration of (E)- and (Z)-2-acetyl-1-ferrocenyl-3-methylbut-1-en-3-ols gave the corresponding (E)- and (Z)-2-acetyl-1-ferrocenyl-3-methylbuta-1,3-dienes, which have a cross-conjugated system of three double bonds. These heterotrienes readily afford the products of linear and cyclodimerization by following a cationic cyclodimerization mechanism; they also form Diels,Alder adducts with azodicarboxylic and maleic acid N -phenylimides. The spatial structures of (E)-2-acetyl-1-ferrocenyl-3-methylbuta-1,3-diene, (E,E)-1,5-diferrocenyl-2-isopropenyl-6-isopropylidene-3-methyl-1,3-octadiene-7-one, and 7-ferrocenyl-4-(ferrocenylmethylidene)-8-isopropylidene-1,3,5-trimethyl-9-oxabicyclo[3.3.1]non-2-ene were elucidated by X-ray diffraction analyses of single crystals. Protein Diffusion Probed by the Transient Grating Method with a New Type of Photochromic Molecule,

A new type of photochromic molecule that can be used for diffusion coefficient (D) measurements of various proteins in solution is described. The absorption spectrum of this molecule is changed upon photoexcitation by the trans,cis isomerization reaction. Target proteins were labeled by this photochromic molecule in the dark and the translational motion of the proteins was detected by the transient grating (TG) method. The TG signal was simple enough to determine D accurately and was stable even for long-time irradiation by the laser light. The TG method using this probe molecule improves many drawbacks of the other techniques. [source]


Human Tissue Distribution of TA02, Which is Homologous with a New Type of Aspartic Proteinase, Napsin A

The N-terminal amino acid sequence of TA02 (molecular weight 35.0 kDa, isoelectric point 5.29), which is associated with primary lung adenocarcinoma, was determined and a fragment peptide was used to generate mouse monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against TA02. The amino acid sequence suggested that TA02 might be homologous with napsin A, a new type of aspartic proteinase. In this context, we confirmed the expression of napsin A in primary lung adenocarcinoma using reversetranscription polymerare chain reaction (RT-PCR) and showed that the TA02 mAbs reacted with glutathione-S-transferase (GST)-napsin A fusion protein. We concluded that TA02 is the same molecule as napsin A, and showed immunohistochemically that it is distributed mainly in type II pneumocytes, alveolar macrophages, renal tubules and exocrine glands and ducts in the pancreas. In particular, type II pneumocytes and alveolar macrophages showed high expression of TA02 among human normal tissues. In primary lung adenocarcinoma, 47 out of 58 (81.0%) primary lesions were positive. All well-differentiated adenocarcinomas except those of goblet cell type showed high expression of TA02. In addition, two out of seven (28.6%) large cell carcinomas showed low expression of TA02. The other histopathological types of primary lung cancer did not express TA02 at all. A few cases of renal cell cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, thyroid cancer, colon cancer and ovarian cancer showed low expression, but the staining patterns were completely different from that of primary lung adenocarcinoma, which showed a granular staining pattern. Our novel mAbs should be valuable for immunochemical detection of TA02/napsin A. [source]

Abstract A set of tris(2-ureidobenzyl)amines 3 was prepared and their dimerization processes thoroughly investigated. In spite of their inherent flexibility, tris(ureas) 3 form dimeric aggregates both in the solid state and in solution. Evidence for the existence of these dimeric species was provided by a combination of techniques (X-ray analysis, NMR and IR spectroscopy, and ESI-MS). The association constants and thermodynamic parameters for the dimerization processes of selected tris(ureas) were determined and show that they are enthalpically driven. Heterodimerization experiments in solution reveal a high degree of self-recognition or narcissistic self-sorting. On the other hand, desymmetrized tris(ureas) derived from 3 self-assemble with modest regioselectivities depending on the terminal substituent of every urea functionality. [source]

Studies on Chromatographic Properties of Perhydroxycucurbit[6]uril as a New Type of Gas Chromatographic Column Packing Material

Abstract Perhydroxycucurbit[6]uril {(HO)12CB[6]} has been used successfully as a stationary phase for packed column gas chromatography for the first time. Perhydroxycucurbit[6]uril stationary phase (PSP) exhibited wide operational temperature, outstanding thermostability and good selectivities to various organic compounds, such as alkanes, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters, ketones, amines, etc. It was also found that some positional isomers, such as disubstituted benzenes could be well separated on this column. PSP has excel1ent separation abilities to some complicate samples, for example, commercial toilet water. Some mechanism of the new packing for GC-separation was preliminarily discussed. It was observed that the partial inclusion complexation of PSP with analytes could improve separation selectivity and column efficiency, instead of complete inclusion. Moreover, PSP exhibited low baseline shift even at dramatically programmed temperature for complicate samples covering a wide boiling point range so as to fast assay. [source]

Abstract Summary: Two new poly(perylene bisimide) polymers that contain biphenyl (PPery) and anthracene (PPeAn) groups at the bay position of perylene bisimide are designed and synthesized. The images of scanning and transmission electron microscopies for PPery and PPeAn show that both polymers form uniform nanoparticles. These copolymers emit red photoluminescence at around 640 nm with a relatively high photoluminescence quantum yield, 48% (in solution) for PPery and 68% (in solution) for PPeAn. New type of egg attachment structure in Ephemeroptera and comparative analysis of chorion structure morphology in three species of Ephemerellidae

Abstract Ephemeroptera eggs vary greatly in their morphology, a characteristic that has been used to solve systematic problems. The eggs of Ephemerellidae may be considered among the most studied in mayfly families, especially with regard to the number of species for which they have been described (approximately 32 species corresponding to 12 genera). However, this study provides new details of the egg morphology of three species of this family, Serratella ignita (Poda 1761), S. spinosa (Ikonomov 1961) and Torleya major (Klapalek 1905). The main finding was that the morphology and organization of the lateral attachment structures do not resemble the type normally associated with,knob terminated coiled thread' (KCT). The particular characteristics of this structure, never before described for Ephemeroptera, led us to propose a new type of attachment structure, the ,multithread-folded with terminal fibre cluster' (MFT). We also provide a detailed description of the chorion morphology of the eggs of the three species, identifying a tear-shaped variation in the oval sperm guide and confirming the type III polar caps in the two species of Serratella Walsh, 1862. New type of phenolic resin,The curing reaction of bisphenol A based benzoxazine with bisoxazoline and the properties of the cured resin.

Abstract The curing reaction of a bisphenol A based benzoxazine [2,2-bis(3,4-dihydro-3-phenyl-1,3-benzoxazine) propane (Ba)] and bisoxazoline with a latent curing agent and the properties of the cured resins were investigated. With a latent curing agent, the ring-opening reaction of the benzoxazine ring occurred more rapidly, and then the phenolic hydroxyl group generated by the ring-opening reaction of the benzoxazine ring also reacted with the oxazoline ring more rapidly. The cure time of molten resins from Ba and bisoxazoline with a latent curing agent was reduced, and the cure temperature was lowered, in comparison with those of resins from Ba and bisoxazoline without a latent curing agent. The melt viscosity of molten resins from Ba and bisoxazoline with a latent curing agent was kept around 50 Pa s at 80°C even after 30 min, and molten resins from Ba and bisoxazoline with a latent curing agent showed good thermal stability below 80°C. However, above 170°C, the curing reaction of Ba with bisoxazoline with a latent curing agent proceeded rapidly. Cured resins from Ba and bisoxazoline with a latent curing agent showed good heat resistance, flame resistance, mechanical properties, and electrical insulation in comparison with cured resins from Ba and bisoxazoline without a latent curing agent. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract A comprehensive study of morphology of Reaction-Induced Vapor Phase Stain Etched porous silicon was performed in order to inspect samples for fractal structure and to estimate their potential for sensing applications. A new dual fractal structure is found in porous silicon layer obtained by Reaction-Induced Vapor Phase Stain Etch. The layer consists of two superposed fractal macro- and nanostructures. The macrostructure is formed due to the condensation of drops while the nanostructure is caused by the chemical reactions of the vapor molecules with the silicon surface. Aligned photoluminescent fibers are formed by the self assembly of an oligo-(p-phenylenevinylene) derivative (OPV) in oriented liquid crystals (see figure). The aligned fibers of OPV show polarized yellow emission in the direction of the long axis of fibers. New types of electro-optical and photonic systems can be visualized in the future as the polarized luminescence of these fibers is combined with the dynamic properties of the liquid crystals.
