A Versatile "Click" Chemistry Precursor of Functional Polystyrene Nanoparticles

The synthesis of a versatile "click" chemistry precursor of functional polystyrene nanoparticles is reported. The resulting nanoparticles thereof offer inherent characteristics of ultrasmall polymeric nanoparticles (size ,4 nm) plus interesting functionalization possibilities, opening the door to new hybrid, soft nano-objects, bridging the gap between synthetic and natural polymers. CD146-based immunomagnetic enrichment followed by multiparameter flow cytometry: a new approach to counting circulating endothelial cells

Summary.,Background: Circulating endothelial cells (CECs) have emerged as non-invasive biomarkers of vascular dysfunction. The most widely used method for their detection is CD146-based immunomagnetic separation (IMS). Although this approach has provided consensus values in both normal and pathologic situations, it remains tedious and requires a trained operator. Objectives: Our objective was to evaluate a new hybrid assay for CEC measurement using a combination of pre-enrichment of CD146+ circulating cells and multiparametric flow cytometry measurement (FCM). Patients and methods: CECs were determined in peripheral blood from 20 healthy volunteers, 12 patients undergoing coronary angioplasty, and 30 renal transplant recipients, and blood spiked with cultured endothelial cells. CD146+ cells were isolated using CD146-coated magnetic nanoparticles and labeled using CD45,fluorescein isothiocyanate and CD146,PE or isotype control antibody and propidium iodide before FCM. The same samples were also processed using CD146-based immunomagnetic separation as the reference method. Results: The hybrid assay detected CECs, identified as CD45dim/CD146bright/propidium iodide+, with high size-related scatter characteristics, and clearly discriminated these from CD45bright/CD146dim activated T lymphocytes. The method demonstrated both high recovery efficiency and good reproducibility. Both IMS and the hybrid assay similarly identified increased CEC levels in patients undergoing coronary angioplasty and renal transplantation, when compared to healthy controls. In patients, CEC values from these two methods were of the same order of magnitude and highly correlated. Bland,Altman analysis revealed poor statistical agreement between methods, flerrofluid,FCM providing higher values than IMS. Conclusion: This new hybrid FCM assay constitutes an accurate alternative to visual counting of CECs following CD146-based IMS. [source]

Index Pteridophytorum Guadalupensium or a revised checklist to the ferns and club mosses of Guadeloupe (French West Indies)

Recent revision of the fern diversity of the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and its dependencies (Marie Galante, Les Saintes and La Désirade) resulted in the listing of 292 native ferns and club mosses in 28 families and 88 genera, of which eight ferns are endemic to Guadeloupe and 20 taxa are only recorded from the Lesser Antilles. Additionally, 21 species have recently been found to be naturalized. Nineteen new combinations are made and a new hybrid is described. Many types from the Fée collection have been reassessed and a number of names are lecto- or neotypified. Heterosis performance of yield and fibre quality in F1 and F2 hybrids in upland cotton

Abstract Because of the difficulty of producing F1 hybrid seeds by hand emasculation and pollination, wide use of heterosis in cotton production has been limited in China. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of F2 hybrids for yield and fibre quality. A half diallel involving eight parents and their F1 and F2 hybrids was grown in replicated studies at Linqing and Nanjing in 1999 and Nanjing in 2000. Yield and fibre quality was determined for all 64 entries. Fibre quality was also determined for parents and F1s, but only for Zhongmiansuo 28 (ZMS28), Xiangzamian 2 (XZM2) and Wanmian 13 (WM13) F2s. These three F2 hybrids are extensively planted in China and provide experimental controls with which to compare the performance of new hybrids. Average yield heterosis for F1s and F2s was 15.9 and 9.2%, respectively. Inbreeding depression for yield varied but some F2s greatly out-yielded the best variety. Average F1 heterosis was 6.7, 6.2 and 2.9%, respectively for number of bolls per unit area, boll weight, and lint percentage. The average F2 heterosis for the same traits was 4.4, 3.3 and 1.6%, respectively. F1 heterosis for fibre traits was low. In general, parental average was a good indicator of the yield and fibre quality of F1 hybrids. These encouraging results suggest there is sufficient heterosis for yield to use F2s in China. [source]
