Boiling heat transfer in a narrow space controlled by punched interference plate

Abstract An experiment on pool boiling in methanol was performed for a case in which the boiling space was controlled by an interference plate with many holes. The narrow space, 0.12 mm in thickness, between the heat transfer surface and the interference plate was hermetically sealed at the perimeter. Therefore, the vapor and liquid were only exchanged through the holes in the interference plate. The degree of superheat at the onset of boiling was 0.7 K without overshoot at 10-mm plate thickness, 1-mm hole diameter, and 3.85-mm hole pitch. The critical heat flux obtained was the same value without the interference plate mentioned above. The interference plate disturbed free convection and a superheat layer was provided under small heat flux on the heat transfer surface. The critical bubble diameter for the onset of boiling was decreased as the temperature of the superheat layer was increased. Thus, the degree of superheat at the onset of boiling was decreased. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Experimental research of pool boiling heat transfer in horizontal narrow spaces

Abstract Much progress has been made in high-performance electronic chips, the miniaturization of electronic circuits and other compact systems recently, which brings about a great demand for developing efficient heat removal techniques to accommodate these high heat fluxes. With this objective in mind, experiments were carried out on five kinds of test elements with distilled water and ethanol as working liquids. The test elements used in these experiments consisted of five parallel discs with diameters varying from 5 mm to 40 mm. The experiments were performed with the discs oriented horizontally and uniform heat fluxes applied at the bottom surfaces. The influence of narrow spacing, space size, working liquid property, and heat flux on boiling heat transfer performance in narrow spaces has been investigated. Experimental results showed that the boiling heat transfer coefficient of a narrow space was 3 to 6 times higher than that of pool boiling when the narrow space size and heat flux combine adequately, but the critical heat flux was lower than that of pool boiling. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Characterization of freezing of gait subtypes and the response of each to levodopa in Parkinson's disease

To assess the effect of levodopa on distinct freezing of gait (FOG) subtypes in patients with ,off' FOG. Nineteen patients (12 men, mean age 62.0 ± 8.4 years) with Parkinson's disease and clinically significant FOG during ,off' states were videotaped whilst walking 130 m during ,off' and ,on' states. Three independent observers characterized the type, duration, and clinical manifestations and quantified FOG by analyzing the videotapes. Their combined mean scores were used for statistical analysis. The intra-class correlation coefficient assessed inter-observer reliability. Wilcoxon and Friedman tests evaluated differences in mean frequencies of FOG characteristics. During ,off' states, FOG was elicited by turns (63%), starts (23%), walking through narrow spaces (12%) and reaching destinations (9%). These respective values were only 14, 4, 2 and 1% during ,on' states (P < 0.011). Moving forward with very small steps and leg trembling in place were the most common manifestations of FOG; total akinesia was rare. Most FOG episodes took <10 s and tended to be shorter during ,on' states. Levodopa significantly decreased FOG frequency (P < 0.0001) and the number of episodes with akinesia (P < 0.001). Distinction amongst FOG subtypes enables evaluation of distinctive therapeutic response. Levodopa helps in reducing the frequency and duration of ,off'-related FOG. [source]

The clinical spectrum of freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease,

Abstract Freezing of gait (FOG) is a common and very disabling symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD). It is usually observed in the advanced stage of the disease, although a mild form can be seen in the early stage. Although some studies have suggested that longer duration of dopaminergic treatment is associated with FOG, the disease progression alone may be responsible for the development of FOG. FOG can be experienced on turning, in narrow spaces, while reaching a destination, and in stressful situations. In PD, FOG is strongly associated with motor fluctuation. FOG is commonly observed in the "off" state and is observed less frequently in the "on" state. Dual tasking (cognitive load) aggravates FOG. Visual or auditory cues often resolve FOG. Analysis of gait revealed that the stepping rhythm suddenly jumps into high frequency (4,5 Hz) in FOG (hastening), and that floor reaction forces are disregulated. Since the hastening phenomenon was also reported in patients with lesions in the striatum and/or the frontal lobe, fronto-basal ganglia projections are considered essential for FOG. Careful observation and gait pattern analysis may lead to a successful management of individual PD patients with FOG. © 2008 Movement Disorder Society [source]
