Study on Flow Induced Nano Structures in iPP with Different Molecular Weight and Resulting Strength Behavior

MACROMOLECULAR SYMPOSIA, Issue 1 2010
Achim Frick
Abstract Polypropylene samples in a wide molecular weight range between approx. 100,kg/mol to 1 600,kg/mol were processed by injection molding to thin walled micro specimens with respect to study shear induced crystallization phenomena under high shear rate and subsequently possible self reinforcement effects. The specimens nano structures were investigated and related deformation behavior under tensile studied. Novel morphologies have been detect and their micromechanical mechanism interpret and summarized. [source]

Directed Helical Growth: A Spring-Like Behavior of Chiral Block Copolymer with Helical Nanostructure Driven by Crystallization (Adv. Funct.

ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 3 2009
Mater.
Crystalline helices (PLLA crystallization directed by helical confined microdomains) and crystalline cylinders (phase transformation of helical nano structures dictated by crystallization) are obtained by controlling the crystallization temperature of PLLA with respect to the glass transition temperature of PS in PS-PLLA block copolymers; this process is described by J.-W. Chiang et al. on page 448. A spring-like behavior of the PLLA helical nanostructures embedded in the PS matrix can be driven by crystallization, so as to dictate the transformation of the helices, resulting in crystalline cylinders that might represent a possible avenue for the design of switchable large-strain actuators. Comments on ,Electric-Field-Assisted Growth of Highly Uniform and Oriented Gold Nanotriangles on Conducting Glass Substrates'

AFM artifacts: Recent results by Sajanlal and Pradeep on the electric-field-assisted growth of highly uniform and oriented gold nanotriangles appear to provide a simple route to the size-, shape-, and orientation-controlled synthesis of nano structures. In our view, however, the triangle patterns observed in the AFM images are not real surface features but artifacts produced by a broken or contaminated AFM tip. [source]

Light, matter interaction in finite-size plasma systems

PHYSICA STATUS SOLIDI (B) BASIC SOLID STATE PHYSICS, Issue 10 2007
W. Hoyer
Abstract It is well known that electromagnetic waves with frequencies below the plasma frequency cannot propagate inside an electron plasma. For plasmas with infinite extensions, this property can be mathematically described by a Bogoliubov transformation of the photonic operators. More generally, the presence of finite-size electron plasmas such as laser-induced atmospheric light strings or metallic nano structures including metamaterials leads to a modification of the light, matter interaction. It is shown how this geometric property can be fully accounted for with the help of adapted mode functions used for the quantization of the electromagnetic field. In addition to the analytical derivations, numerical results for luminescence spectra out of quasi-two-dimensional, planar plasma sheets are presented. (© 2007 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
