Herbert Abstract The diet of southern African carnivorous slugs of the endemic family Chlamydephoridae is discussed. At least three species, Chlamydephorus bruggeni, C. burnupi and C. sexangulus, are predators of pill-millipedes Sphaerotherium sp. The feeding behaviour of C. sexangulus is described in detail and illustrated. It is suggested that the prey, once captured, is killed or immobilized by the introduction of a toxin through the intersegmental membrane joining the millipede's skeletal plates. The source for such a toxin may be the anterior pedal mucous gland. Predation on sphaerotheriid millipedes may be a behavioural apomorphy associated with a clade within the Chlamydephoridae, including taxa with longitudinal body keels and distinctive radula morphology, but it is evidently not confined to this clade. Whether the diet of such millipede-eating slugs is limited to millipedes is unknown, but it is probable that at least some chlamydephorids feed on more conventional prey such as snails and earthworms. In this study, we first tested the utility of MAb 1,12-3 for detection of presumed CYP1A proteins in hepatic microsomes of northern leopard frogs treated without or with 3,3,,4,4,,5-pentachlorobiphenyl (PCB 126). Statistical analysis showed that ethoxyresorufin- O -deethylase (EROD) activities and CYP1A equivalents in treated groups were significantly increased at doses >2.3 mg/kg compared with the control groups (p < 0.05), and the increases were maintained for at least four weeks. This result confirmed that MAb 1,12-3 can be used for detection of CYP1A in northern leopard frogs and indicated that CYP1A is the primary catalyst for EROD in this species. In a subsequent experiment, sections of organs of PCB 126-treated frogs were immunohistochemically stained with MAb 1,12-3 to identify localization of the CYP1A in different cell types. The CYP1A staining was seen prominently in hepatocytes and epithelium of nephronic duct, while capillaries close to gastric epithelium and submucosal vascular epithelium in both stomach and intestine exhibited moderate to strong staining. The CYP1A was immunodetected in coronary endothelium and the vascular endothelium of lung and gonad. In skin, mild staining was seen in epithelial cells of mucous glands and serous glands and in vascular endothelium, demonstrating induction of CYP1A in the dermal layer. Bolscher Human saliva is known to possess components that decrease the HIV-1 infectivity in vitro. The mechanism of how these components inhibit the infectivity is still not clear on the molecular level. The purpose of this study was to discriminate between serous and mucous components with respect to inhibitory capacity and site of action. We have used total saliva and saliva from the major (sero)mucous glands: submandibular gland, sublingual glands, and glands in the palate, in comparison with the serous parotid glands. HIV-1 IIIB and primary variants were incubated with saliva, and inhibition of HIV-1-infection was determined by analysing the cytopathic effect on MT-2 cells. Mucous saliva, as well as serous saliva, contained high molecular weight components that reduced HIV-1-infectivity, at least partially by entrapment of the virus particles. Lower molecular weight components in all types of saliva possessed strong HIV-1 neutralizing capacity. Using pro-viral DNA synthesis by reverse transcription as a discrimination point in the replication cycle, the results indicated that part of the saliva samples acted before, but others after, this point. In conclusion, saliva inhibits HIV-1-infection by the action of high molecular weight components in combination with low molecular weight components from serous as well as mucous saliva, affecting different stages of the infection cycle. CHOI We have compared the distribution, numbers and volume of mucous glands in the tracheas of 11 mammalian species. No glands were present in the rabbit. The mouse only contained glands at the border between the trachea and larynx. In the rat, glands were commonest in the cephalad third of the trachea, but on average were much scarcer than in the larger species. Between species, there was a significant correlation between airway diameter and gland volume per unit surface area, suggesting that the rate of deposition of inhaled particles may increase in large airways. In the ventral portion of the trachea of about half the species, the glands were concentrated between the cartilaginous rings; in others they were evenly distributed over and between the rings. In most species in which the trachealis muscle attached to the internal surface of the cartilaginous rings, the glands were external to the muscle. In all species in which the muscle attached to the external surface of the cartilaginous rings, the glands were internal to the muscle. In the ox, goat, dog and sheep, the volume of glands per unit tracheal surface area was markedly greater in the ventral than the dorsal aspect of the trachea. The reverse was true of the pig. In humans, gland density in the 2 regions was similar. The frequency of gland openings was determined in the ox, goat, pig, dog and sheep tracheas, and ranged from 0.3 per mm2 in the dorsal portion of the sheep trachea to 1.5 per mm2 in the ventral portion of the ox trachea. For these 5 species, the volume of gland acini per unit luminal surface area varied linearly with the numbers of gland openings, with the volume of individual glands being constant at , 120 nl. Salih Deveci A case of blastomatous tumor with teratoid features is presented. The polypoid mass was observed in the left nasal cavity of a 72-year-old man. Histologically, the lesion was composed of neuroepithelial cells with blastomatous appearance, cystic squamous nests filled with keratin materials, many mucous glands, complex tubular and glandular structures with edematous fibroblastic stroma. Sinonasal neoplasms including teratoid components and immature neuroepithelium are exceedingly rare. We suggest that the term ,immature teratoma' is more suitable than blastoma or blastomatous tumor when there is no carcinomatous or sarcomatous component besides the immature neuroepithelium and teratoid elements.
