Solid-Phase Reactive Chromatography (SPRC): A New Methodology for Wittig and Horner,Emmons Reactions on a Column under Microwave Irradiation

EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 2 2010
    Saada C. Dakdouki
Abstract A new methodology named solid-phase reactive chromatography (SPRC), which combines reaction, separation, and purification into a single unit for the preparation of small samples, is described. This method was illustrated in the synthesis of some natural bioactive compounds, namely, methoxylated analogues of resveratrol, alkylresorcinols, and 5-aryl-2,4-pentadienoates, over a column of alumina-KF under microwave irradiation by using the Wittig and Horner,Emmons reactions. This approach permitted the preparation of the target olefins with high purity and good to excellent yields in short reaction times. [source]

On the Synthesis of Carbon Nanofibers and Nanotubes by Microwave Irradiation: Parameters, Catalysts, and Substrates

ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 17 2009
    Tamara Druzhinina
Abstract The microwave (MW)-assisted synthesis of one dimensional carbon systems is introduced as a promising approach to improve the speed and cost-effectiveness of the fabrication process. Improved reaction conditions are generated by direct MW heating and synthesis under advanced reaction conditions. The influence of the reaction conditions is investigated and the importance of individual process parameters on the synthesis is discussed. Temperature and pressure data recorded during the irradiation process are analyzed in detail and allow the determination of essential process parameters. This leads to improved reaction conditions, better control of the one-dimensional carbon nanosystems by tuning the catalyst materials, and allows expanding this approach to initiate the synthesis on a variety of different substrates, such as quartz glass and mica. Strong Carbon-Nanotube,Polymer Bonding by Microwave Irradiation,

ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 12 2007
    Y. Wang
Abstract The vigorous response of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) to microwave irradiation, leading to the release of a large amount of heat, is used to locally melt a plastic matrix adjacent to the nanotubes within a period of seconds. This results in the intercalation of the MWNTs into the polymer matrix at room temperature without any physical damage to the polymer. The so-called "microwave welding" approach creates a new paradigm for the formation of very strong MWNT,polymer bonds without the use of any adhesive, and represents a significant step forward for the fabrication of functional nanotube composites. Here, we demonstrate the implications of the anisotropic alignment of MWNTs in polymers, patterned conductors/resistors for soft electronics, and high-strength composites, where the MWNTs are ,soldered' to flexible polymer substrates. A Selective Transformation of Flavanones to 3-Bromoflavones and Flavones Under Microwave Irradiation

ADVANCED SYNTHESIS & CATALYSIS (PREVIOUSLY: JOURNAL FUER PRAKTISCHE CHEMIE), Issue 1-2 2006
    Zhongzhen Zhou
Abstract This paper presents the first report of a highly selective transformation of flavanones to 3-bromoflavones or flavones by microwave irradiation of the corresponding flavanone reactants and N -bromosuccinimide (NBS) in the presence of a catalytic amount of 2,2,-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN). The combination of good to excellent yields, shorter reaction time (10,min), and high levels of functional group compatibility make this an attractive synthetic approach to 3-bromoflavones and flavones. Influence of Microwave Irradiation on the Lipase-Catalyzed Ring-Opening Polymerization of , -Caprolactone

MACROMOLECULAR RAPID COMMUNICATIONS, Issue 9 2006
    Patrick Kerep
Abstract Summary: The microwave (MW)-assisted lipase-catalyzed ring-opening polymerization of , -caprolactone in boiling solvents was investigated for the first time. In case of boiling toluene or benzene the MW-assisted reaction proceeded significantly slower compared to oil bath heating. On the other hand, using boiling diethyl ether as solvent, an increase of the polymerization rate due to MW irradiation was found. Yield, molecular weight measurements, and MALDI-TOF analysis supported the results. Reactivity of the MW-assisted ring-opening polymerization of , -caprolactone compared with conventional thermal heating in different solvents. [source]

A Rapid Eco-Friendly Synthesis of Poly(butylene succinate) by a Direct Polyesterification under Microwave Irradiation

MACROMOLECULAR RAPID COMMUNICATIONS, Issue 14 2005
    Sivan Velmathi
Abstract Summary: A rapid and eco-friendly synthesis of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) using microwaves was developed in the presence of 1,3-dichloro-1,1,3,3-tetrabutyldistannoxane as catalyst. To determine the optimum conditions, the effect of catalyst concentration, bulk vs. solution polymerization, reaction time, temperature, and stoichiometry of the monomers were studied. Based on the optimum conditions, PBS with a weight-average molecular weight of 2.35,,104 was obtained in a short time of 20 min. Synthesis of poly(butylene succinate) under microwave irradiation.
