Effect of self-assemblies of various surfactants in their single and mixed states on the BZ oscillatory reaction

Micelles of different surfactants are well known to affect chemical equilibria and reactivities by selectively sequestering the reagent substrates through electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions. In this article, the effects of micelles of various surfactants on different parameters of the Ce(IV)-catalyzed Belousov,Zhabotinsky (BZ) oscillatory reaction at 35°C in nonstirred closed conditions are studied by employing spectrophotometry and tensiometry. Surfactants used in this study are the cationics hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and pentamethylene-1,5-bis(N -hexadecyl- N,N -dimethylammonium)bromide gemini (Gemini), anionic sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), and nonionic Brij58, whereas the binary surfactant systems used are cationic,nonionic CTAB+Brij58 and anionic,nonionic SDBS+Brij58. The results revealed that the induction period shows a definite variation with increasing concentration of different surfactants above their critical micelle concentration (cmc). The amplitudes of oscillation and absorbance maxima and minima are enhanced in the presence of micelles of CTAB and Gemini surfactants, whereas micelles of SDBS and Brij58 have almost no effect on the nature of the oscillations. However, mixed micelles of CTAB+Brij58 and SDBS+Brij58 binary mixtures show a quite different effect on the overall behavior of the oscillations. The enhanced effect of CTAB and Gemini surfactants on the overall nature of oscillations has been attributed to the positive charge on the surface of their micelles and to some extent on the presence of nitrogen in their head group. Development of the Bipolar Inventory of Symptoms Scale: concurrent validity, discriminant validity and retest reliability

Abstract Scales used in studies of bipolar disorder have generally been standardized with major depressive or hospitalized manic patients. A clinician rated scale based on a semi-structured interview for persons with bipolar disorder, with comprehensive coverage of bipolar symptomatology, is needed. We report concurrent, divergent and convergent psychometric reliability, discriminant validity and relationship to a measure of overall function for a new psychometric rating instrument. A primarily outpatient sample of 224 subjects was assessed using the Bipolar Inventory of Symptoms Scale (BISS). The BISS total score and depression and mania subscales were compared to the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS), the Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and the Global Assessment of Functioning Scale (GAF). Clinical mood states were also compared using the BISS. The BISS scores demonstrated good concurrent validity, with estimates (Pearson correlations) ranging from 0.74 to 0.94 for YMRS and MADRS and test,retest reliability from 0.95 to 0.98. BISS concurrent validity with the GAF was significant for four clinical states, but not mixed states. The BISS discriminated primary bipolar mood states as well as subjects recovered for eight weeks compared to healthy controls. In conclusion, the BISS is a reliable and valid instrument broadly applicable in clinical research to assess the comprehensive domains of bipolar disorder. Heisenberg uncertainty relations can be replaced by stronger ones

Strong exciton-light coupling in photonic crystal nanocavities

Abstract The strong coupling regime between excitons in a single self-assembled InAs quantum dot and the cavity mode in a photonic-crystal structure embedded in GaAs planar waveguides is theoretically investigated. It is concluded that zero-dimensional mixed states should form when the quality factor of the cavity mode is higher than Q , 2000. The corresponding vacuum-field Rabi splitting is close to its limiting value already for Q , 10000. Results are shown for a model GaAs-based photonic crystal nanocavity, in which single quantum dot excitons are predicted to be always in the strong coupling regime if the quantum dot is placed close to the antinode position of the electric field. Unipolar depression with racing thoughts: A bipolar spectrum disorder?

Abstract Major depressive disorder (MDD) with racing/crowded thoughts is understudied. Kraepelin classified ,depression with flight of ideas' in the mixed states of his manic-depressive insanity. The aim of the study was to test whether MDD with racing/crowded thoughts was close to bipolar disorders. Consecutive 379 bipolar-II disorder (BP-II) and 271 MDD depressed outpatients were interviewed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV, the Hypomania Interview Guide, and the Family History Screen, by a senior psychiatrist in a private practice. Intra-depression hypomanic symptoms were systematically assessed. Mixed depression was defined as a major depressive episode (MDE) plus three or more intra-MDE hypomanic symptoms. MDD with racing/crowded thoughts was compared to MDD without racing/crowded thoughts on classic bipolar validators (young onset age, many recurrences, atypical and mixed depression, bipolar family history). Frequency of MDD with racing/crowded thoughts was 56.4%. MDD with racing/crowded thoughts, versus MDD without racing/crowded thoughts, had significantly lower age at onset, more MDE severity, more psychotic, melancholic, atypical, and mixed depressions, and more bipolar family history. Of the intra-MDE hypomanic symptoms, irritability, psychomotor agitation and distractibility were significantly more common in MDD with racing/crowded thoughts. Compared to BP-II on bipolar validators, validators were less common in MDD with racing/crowded thoughts. MDD with racing/crowded thoughts seemed to be a severe variant of MDD. MDD with racing/crowded thoughts versus MDD without racing/crowded thoughts, and versus BP-II, had significant differences on bipolar validators, suggesting that it may lie along a continuum linking MDD without racing/crowded thoughts and BP-II. Pure and mixed manic subtypes: a review of diagnostic classification and validation

Objective:, To review issues surrounding the diagnosis and validity of bipolar manic states. Methods:, Studies of the manic syndrome and its diagnostic subtypes were reviewed emphasizing historical development, conceptualizations, formal diagnostic proposals, and validation. Results:, Definitions delineating mixed and pure manic states derive some validity from external measures. DSM-IV and ICD-10 diagnosis of bipolar mixed states are too rigid and less restrictive definitions can be validated. Anxiety is a symptom often overlooked in diagnosis of manic subtypes and may be relevant to the mixed manic state. The boundary for separation of mixed mania and depression remains unclear. A ,pure' non-psychotic manic state similar to Kraepelin's ,hypomania' has been observed in several independent studies. Conclusions:, Issues surrounding diagnostic subtyping of manic states remain complex and the debates surrounding categorical versus dimensional approaches continue. To the extent that categorical approaches for mixed mania diagnosis are adopted, both DSM-IV and ICD-10 are too rigid. Inclusion of non-specific symptoms in definitions of mixed mania, such as psychomotor agitation, does not facilitate and may hinder the diagnostic separation of pure and mixed mania. The inclusion of a diagnostic seasonal specifier for DSM-IV, which is currently based on seasonal patterns for depression might be expanded to include seasonal patterns for mania. Boundaries between subtypes may be ,fuzzy' rather than crisp, and graded approaches could be considered. With the continued development of new tools, such as imaging and genetics, alternative approaches to diagnosis other than the purely symptom-centric paradigms might be considered. [source]

Background: The phenomenology of unipolar and bipolar disorders differ in a number of ways, such as the presence of mixed states and atypical features. Conventional depression rating instruments are designed to capture the characteristics of unipolar depression and have limitations in capturing the breadth of bipolar disorder. Method: The Bipolar Depression Rating Scale (BDRS) was administered together with the Montgomery Asberg Rating Scale (MADRS) and Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) in a double-blind randomised placebo-controlled clinical trial of N-acetyl cysteine for bipolar disorder (N = 75). Results: A factor analysis showed a two-factor solution: depression and mixed symptom clusters. The BDRS has strong internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.917), the depression cluster showed robust correlation with the MADRS (r = 0.865) and the mixed subscale correlated with the YMRS (r = 0.750). Conclusion: The BDRS has good internal validity and inter-rater reliability and is sensitive to change in the context of a clinical trial. [source]

Objective: One of the main utilities of staging in bipolar disorder is enhancing the formulation of pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment strategies. Hence, it is essential to ascertain whether the number of previous episodes influences treatment response. Hereby, we present a 5-year post hoc study on the efficacy of group psychoeducation for bipolar disorders according to the number of previous episodes. Methods: For this subanalysis, we have compared the 5-year outcome of 120 euthymic psychoeducated versus non-psychoeducated bipolar patients according to the number of previous episodes at study entry. Results: Patients with more than seven episodes at study entry did not show any significant improvement with psychoeducation according to time to recurrence. Patients with more than 14 episodes did not benefit from psychoeducation in terms of a reduction of time spent ill. Patients with 7 or 8 episodes showed a benefit in terms of fewer days spent in hypomania, depression, mixed episodes or any episodes but not mania, while patients with 9,14 episodes showed a benefit in terms of fewer days spent in hypomania and depression but not in mixed states or mania. Only patients who presented up to 6 episodes showed reduction in time spent in any episode polarity. Conclusion: The number of previous episodes clearly worsens response to psychoeducation, perhaps in a more subtle way than that observed with other psychological therapies. Psychoeducation should be delivered as soon as possible in the illness course, supporting the idea of early intervention. [source]


A novel scale for measuring mixed states in bipolar disorder

Abstract Objectives: Conventional descriptions of bipolar disorder tend to treat the mixed state as something of an afterthought. There is no scale that specifically measures the phenomena of the mixed state. This study aimed to test a novel scale for mixed state in a clinical and community population of bipolar patients. Methods: The scale included clinically relevant symptoms of both mania and depression in a bivariate scale. Recovered respondents were asked to recall their last manic episode. The scale allowed endorsement of one or more of the manic and depressive symptoms. Internal consistency analyses were carried out using Cronbach alpha. Factor analysis was carried out using a standard Principal Components Analysis followed by Varimax Rotation. A confirmatory factor analytic method was used to validate the scale structure in a representative clinical sample. Results: The reliability analysis gave a Cronbach alpha value of 0.950, with a range of corrected-item-total-scale correlations from 0.546 (weight change) to 0.830 (mood). The factor analysis revealed a two-factor solution for the manic and depressed items which accounted for 61.2% of the variance in the data. Factor 1 represented physical activity, verbal activity, thought processes and mood. Factor 2 represented eating habits, weight change, passage of time and pain sensitivity. Conclusions: This novel scale appears to capture the key features of mixed states. The two-factor solution fits well with previous models of bipolar disorder and concurs with the view that mixed states may be more than the sum of their parts.
