The Inclusion of Female PhD Students in Academia: A Case Study of a Swedish University Department

GENDER, WORK & ORGANISATION, Issue 2 2003
Ulf Elg
The article introduces a framework for understanding women's entry into the academic world and how it interacts with internal departmental structures and practices. It presents three specific strategies applied by a group of women to gain a doctorate and acceptance in their department. Few previous studies have stressed women's strategies to cope with the organizational setting in academia. The article draws on previous research on women in academia and how organizational characteristics influence women's careers. It is based on a case study of a Swedish university department. Sweden is often recognized for creating favourable working conditions for women. Yet the Swedish academic world is very male-dominated at the top and even the medium level. It is also more common than in many other Western countries that academics stay on at the department where they graduated. Therefore, a PhD is often a first step in a career within that department. Understanding gay consumers' clothing involvement and fashion consciousness

INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF CONSUMER STUDIES, Issue 5 2007
Ou Sha
Abstract This study's primary objective was to provide a better understanding of gay consumers' clothing involvement and fashion consciousness. Personal in-depth interviews were conducted with 13 gay professionals in Canada. One hundred and forty-five usable survey questionnaires were also collected from gay consumers. The Fashion Involvement Index Scale (FII scale) was adapted for this study. Interview participants indicated that, in general, gay men tend to be more fashion conscious than heterosexual men. Survey results also indicated two dimensions, fashion interest and fashion awareness that were found to be stronger for this group of gay consumers than for heterosexual men. The FII value for the survey participants also resulted in a sum score mean value of 11.2, a medium level of fashion involvement that is a slightly higher level than has been found for heterosexual consumers. Interestingly, this study does not provide strong evidence of gay consumers' involvement in cutting-edge fashion trends. [source]

Effect of melt processing conditions on the morphology and properties of nylon 6 nanocomposites

POLYMER ENGINEERING & SCIENCE, Issue 11 2007
F. Chavarria
Nylon 6 (PA-6) organoclay nanocomposites were prepared by melt processing using three different twin screw extruders (TSEs). The effect of mixing conditions, feed port location, residence time, and number of extrusion passes on the morphology and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites were examined. Wide-angle X-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and mechanical property data are reported. Particle analyses were performed on the TEM images to quantitatively characterize the extent of exfoliation. The amount of shear and the mixing conditions created by TSEs have a significant effect on the morphology and properties of PA-6 nanocomposites. Morphology and mechanical property results show that (1) melting the polymer before coming into contact with the organoclay followed by a low level of shear and (2) maintaining a medium level of shear throughout the extruder with a longer residence time lead to extremely high platelet dispersion and matrix reinforcement for PA-6 nanocomposites. Nanocomposites formed in a DSM microcompounder showed similar morphologies and modulus trends as those obtained with conventional TSEs; thus, this microcompounder is a good alternative for nanocomposite research especially when only small amounts of material are available. Influence of replacing brewers' grains with green tea grounds on feed intake, digestibility and ruminal fermentation characteristics of wethers

ANIMAL SCIENCE JOURNAL, Issue 2 2008
Chuncheng XU
ABSTRACT An experiment was conducted to examine feed intake, apparent digestibility, nitrogen balance, ruminal fermentation and blood components of wethers fed diets containing increasing levels of wet green tea grounds (WGTG). The experimental design was a 4 × 4 Latin square with four wethers in four 15-day periods. Wethers were allowed access to diets ad libitum, and allotted to one of four treatments in which WGTG replaced 0% (no WGTG added, CTG), 5% (low level, LBG), 10% (medium level, MTG), and 15% (high level, HTG) of total mixed ration (TMR) dry matter (DM) as wet brewers grains (WBG). All TMR silages were ensiled for 120 days and, irrespective of the WGTG addition, they were well preserved with a high lactic acid content, low pH and ammonia-N contents. There were no differences among treatments in feed intake, with the exception of ether extract intake (P = 0.032). Digestibilities for LTG and MTG treatments were not different from CTG. However, the organic matter, crude protein, acid detergent fiber and energy digestibilities for HTG treatment were lower than the CTG (P < 0.05). As the level of WGTG increased, nitrogen intake did not differ, but fecal nitrogen increased (P = 0.002), while urinary nitrogen decreased (P < 0.001). No differences among treatments were found in pH level and volatile fatty acids concentrations. However, the ruminal ammonia-N of the HTG silage was lower than for the CTG silage at all times (P < 0.05). Increasing concentrations of WGTG in the TMR silage decreased (P = 0.019) plasma urea nitrogen content. Therefore, the possible mixing proportion of WGTG for TMR silages can be 10% of the diet DM. Experimental Evidence of the Knowledge Gap: Message Arousal, Motivation, and Time Delay

HUMAN COMMUNICATION RESEARCH, Issue 4 2008
Maria Elizabeth Grabe
This study experimentally tested the knowledge gap from an information processing perspective. Specifically, knowledge acquisition was investigated under conditions of medium and low news message arousal, with time delay. Results show the persistence of a knowledge gap, particularly for low arousing messages. In fact, at low levels of message arousal, the gap is larger than at medium levels of arousal. Some existing research suggests that message salience explains the knowledge gap. Findings from this study show that information processing aptitude may also be a significant factor. Measures of several dimensions of participant motivation to cognitively engage with news messages were added as covariates to statistical analyses. These were found not to affect the knowledge gap outcomes in this data set. Site reoccupation in fragmented landscapes: testing predictions of metapopulation theory

JOURNAL OF ANIMAL ECOLOGY, Issue 2 2001
Ralph S. Hames
Summary 1,Populations of formerly continuously distributed species subdivided by habitat fragmentation may show distributions in space and time that are consistent with predictions of metapopulation theory. Local extinctions and recolonizations should result in the most fragmented sites being infrequently occupied and the least fragmented sites being continuously occupied by sensitive species. The probability of extinction is predicted to be negatively correlated with patch size and the amount of habitat in the landscape. Conversely, recolonization is predicted to be negatively correlated with the isolation of the patch, and positively correlated with the amount of habitat in the landscape. 2,Data from a 3-year study of the effect of fragmentation were used to test whether these predictions from metapopulation theory apply to populations of the long-distance migrant forest bird Piranga olivacea (Scarlet Tanager) in fragmented North American landscapes. 3,Principal components analysis was used to derive a composite measure of fragmentation. This measure was used in a logistic regression as a predictor of the number of years that territorial males would occupy a site, given that it was occupied at least once. More fragmented sites were more likely to be occupied only once; the least fragmented sites were more likely to be occupied in all three years. Data on fragmentation were necessary, but not sufficient, to predict site reoccupation, and were poor predictors at medium levels of fragmentation. 4,The univariate measures of fragmentation (patch size and isolation, proportion of forest, and forest/non-forest edge), were also used in logistic regressions to predict the separate probabilities of local extinction or recolonization. Local extinctions were negatively correlated with patch size and amount of forest in the landscape, as predicted. Recolonizations were negatively correlated with isolation of the patch as predicted, and surprisingly, also with the amount of edge in the landscape. This suggests that stochasticity may drive extinctions, but that habitat selection may play an important role in recolonization. 5,Demographic data are usually required to establish the suitability of habitat to support persistent populations, but multiple-year distributional data can provide information on habitat quality far above that obtained from single-year studies. An examination of the intentional and unintentional aspects of medication non-adherence in patients diagnosed with hypertension

JOURNAL OF CLINICAL NURSING, Issue 4 2007
Elaine Lehane MSc
Aims., The primary aim of this study was to describe the unintentional and intentional aspects of non-adherence in patients diagnosed with hypertension. A secondary aim was to examine the relationships between medication adherence and purposeful actions (intentional non-adherence), patterned behaviours (unintentional non-adherence) and demographic questionnaire variables. Background., Non-adherence to medications continues to be a significant health-care issue, the extent and consequences of which have been well documented. Despite considerable research over the past five decades, little progress has been made in solving this healthcare problem. Recent literature indicates that this lack of progress can be attributed to the fact that past research has concentrated solely upon either the unintentional or the intentional aspects of non-adherence, instead of addressing both facets simultaneously. Methods., A quantitative, descriptive, correlation research design was employed using Johnson's (2002) Medication Adherence Model as a theoretical framework. A convenience sample of 73 participants with hypertension, attending the outpatients' clinics of two university hospitals was recruited. Data were collected by means of a researcher administered questionnaire and analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Results., High levels of medication adherence with a mean adherence score of 4·75 (maximum 5) were reported. Low and medium levels of purposeful actions and medium and high levels of patterned behaviours towards medication taking were found. Correlational analyses did not demonstrate statistically significant associations. Conclusions., Both the intentional and unintentional dimensions of medication-taking are simultaneously considered by patients to varying levels when adhering to therapeutic regimens. This is an important research area for nurses as it facilitates an increased understanding of non-adherence and, in so doing, aids the uncovering of more effective interventions aimed at sustaining lifelong pharmacotherapy. Relevance to clinical practice., By acknowledging a broader approach to patient medication-taking, nurses will be able more effectively to assess and intervene in non-adherent behaviours and actions. The Role of Trust in Channels of Strategic Communication for Building Civil Society

JOURNAL OF COMMUNICATION, Issue 4 2005
Carl H. Botan
In these turbulent times, development communication is a growing and important area of both academic research and practice. This article explores the role of strategic communication channels in the development of civil society in Bosnia. This case study reports the results of a survey that asked Bosnians about their levels of trust in government officials, alternative media, and state-controlled media outlets. The findings suggest that shortly after the war Bosnians had medium levels of trust in their communication channels, and when it comes to obtaining important information, it appears that alternative media were considered more trustworthy than either the state media or local government officials. Finally, political affiliation and ethnicity affect trust in communication channels in complex ways. [source]

TREATMENT OF CULTIVATED HIGHBUSH BLUEBERRIES (VACCINIUM CORYMBOSUM L.) WITH ELECTRON BEAM IRRADIATION: DOSIMETRY AND PRODUCT QUALITY

JOURNAL OF FOOD PROCESS ENGINEERING, Issue 2 2008
M.A. MORENO
ABSTRACT We determined the dose distribution within a tray of highbush blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) exposed to electron beam irradiation at medium levels (1.0,3.2 kGy) using Monte Carlo and computer tomography scanning technology. We also evaluated the quality of irradiated and nonirradiated (control) fruits stored at 5C and 70% relative humidity during 14 days by a series of chemical analyses. Blueberries packed in plastic clamshell containers (trays) were irradiated using a 10-MeV linear accelerator with single-beam fixture (top only). Irradiation of blueberries at 1.1 kGy had no significant (P > 0.05) effect on the fruit quality with the exception of ascorbic acid, which decreased by 17% by the end of storage. Irradiation had an enhancing effect on the total phenolic and tannin content of all the irradiated fruits (10,20% increases). The calculated dose distribution in a pack of blueberries confirmed that the dose is not uniformly distributed within the pack because of density inhomogeneities (flesh, skin air). Dose levels at the bottom of the trays were 18 (±8%) higher than at the top. These results suggest that careful dose distribution examination must be conducted prior to setting up of an irradiation run for the packed fruits. Excellent agreement was found between measured and calculated doses at different electron beam conveyor speeds. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS Little information is available on how electron beam irradiation penetrates a complex medium such as packed blueberries. This study presents unique results from a dose distribution calculation method using Monte Carlo simulation and computed tomography scanning techniques, which can be an effective tool for the development of proper irradiation treatment planning of packed fruits and other fresh produce. The suitability of using electron beam technology to preserve the quality characteristics and shelf life of packed blueberries was verified. [source]
