Reproductive biology of the skate, Rioraja agassizii (Müller and Henle, 1841), off Puerto Quequén, Argentina

JOURNAL OF APPLIED ICHTHYOLOGY, Issue 2009
M. Estalles
Summary A total of 230 specimens of the skate, Rioraja agassizii, was collected from the commercial bottom trawl fishery of Puerto Quequén, Argentina. During the warmer seasons greater proportions of females were sampled. The largest male and female sampled were 629 and 698 mm total length (TL), respectively. Sexual dimorphism was detected in the relationship between weight (W),TL and disc width (DW),TL, in that females were heavier and wider than males. The smallest mature male and female were 485 and 530 mm TL, respectively. TL at 50% maturity (TL50%) was estimated at 504 and 570 mm for males and females, respectively. Females exhibited heavier livers than males throughout their lifetimes. Seasonal variations in the gonadosomatic (GSI) and hepatosomatic (HSI) indices, and in the width of the left oviducal gland (OG), along with the greater number of pregnant females sampled during spring, suggested that the peak of the egg laying season could be during this season. The egg cases presented a mean length of 69.01 ± 5.53 mm, mean width of 43.40 ± 1.86 mm and mean weight of 17.00 ± 4.59 g. According to these results specimens from Puerto Quequén and southern Brazil appeared to differ in size, the peak of the egg-laying season and in egg dimensions. [source]

Frequency of sub-clinical cerebral edema in children with diabetic ketoacidosis

PEDIATRIC DIABETES, Issue 2 2006
Nicole S Glaser
Abstract:, Symptomatic cerebral edema occurs in approximately 1% of children with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). However, asymptomatic or subclinical cerebral edema is thought to occur more frequently. Some small studies have found narrowing of the cerebral ventricles indicating cerebral edema in most or all children with DKA, but other studies have not detected narrowing in ventricle size. In this study, we measured the intercaudate width of the frontal horns of the lateral ventricles using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in children with DKA during treatment and after recovery from the DKA episode. We determined the frequency of ventricular narrowing and compared clinical and biochemical data for children with and without ventricular narrowing. Forty-one children completed the study protocol. The lateral ventricles were significantly smaller during DKA treatment (mean width, 9.3 ± 0.3 vs. 10.2 ± 0.3 mm after recovery from DKA, p < 0.001). Children with ventricular narrowing during DKA treatment (22 children, 54%) were more likely to have mental status abnormalities than those without narrowing [12/22 vs. 4/19 with Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores below 15 during therapy, p = 0.03]. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that a lower initial PCO2 level was significantly associated with ventricular narrowing [odds ratio (OR) = 0.88, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 0.78,0.99, p = 0.047). No other variables analyzed were associated with ventricular narrowing in the multivariate analysis. We conclude that narrowing of the lateral ventricles is evident in just over half of children being treated for DKA. Although children with ventricular narrowing did not exhibit neurological abnormalities sufficient for a diagnosis of ,symptomatic cerebral edema', mild mental status abnormalities occurred frequently, suggesting that clinical evidence of cerebral edema in children with DKA may be more common than previously reported. Theileria gilberti n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Theileriidae) in the Gilbert's Potoroo (Potorous gilbertii)

THE JOURNAL OF EUKARYOTIC MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 3 2009
JEREMY Y. LEE
ABSTRACT. The morphology and genetic characterisation of a new species of piroplasm identified in the blood of the Gilbert's potoroo (Potorous gilbertii) from the Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve near Albany, Western Australia, is described from blood and tissue samples from 16 Gilbert's potoroos. Microscopy of blood showed these parasites are highly pleomorphic with a mean length of 1.8 ,m and mean width of 0.85 ,m. Phylogenetic analysis of 18S rRNA sequence data identified the piroplasm as a new species of Theileria that is closely related to other Australian marsupial piroplasm species. Based on biological and molecular data, it is proposed that the parasite from Gilbert's potoroo be given the name Theileria gilberti n. sp. [source]

The Gross and Micro Anatomy of the Accessory Sex Glands of the Male Agouti (Dasyprocta leporina)

ANATOMIA, HISTOLOGIA, EMBRYOLOGIA, Issue 3 2009
W. M. Mollineau
Summary This study was a follow up to the study on the gross anatomy of the male agouti (Dasyprocta leporina) reproductive system. The seminal vesicles of the agouti are lobulated structures. The mean diameter of the large lumen is 883.6 ± 76.83 ,m. The mucosa (24.1 ± 0.92 ,m), which is lined by pseudo-stratified columnar epithelium is thrown into folds, which often branch. The lamina muscularis mucosa is thin and is made of loose connective tissue containing blood vessels. The mucosa of the leaf-like coagulating glands of the agouti is folded. The mean diameter of the lumen is 488.3 ± 41.96 ,m. The mucosa contains tubuloalveolar glands, which have a mean length of 199.5 ± 28.83 ,m. The thin epithelium, 15.0 ± 1.25-,m wide, consists mostly of pseudo-stratified columnar cells. The epithelium also has surface modifications in the form of apical blebs and cilia. The epithelium of the agouti's lobulated prostate gland is also folded creating a large lumen with a mean diameter of 995.5 ± 55.70 ,m. The mucosa contains tubular and tubuloalveolar glands, each having a mean length of 134.4 ± 13.59 ,m. The epithelium (13.9 ± 1.16 ,m) consists of pseudo-stratified columnar cells. The pea-shaped bulbourethral gland (BG) of the agouti consists of convoluted tubular, mucous secretory units, which are irregularly shaped each with a mean length of 177.9 ± 7.10 ,m and a mean width of 63.5 ± 3.97 ,m. The BG of the agouti are ventro-lateral to the rectum and dorsally positioned to the pubic symphysis, and connected to the urethra by short ducts. [source]

Mapping serpulid worm reefs (Polychaeta: Serpulidae) for conservation management

AQUATIC CONSERVATION: MARINE AND FRESHWATER ECOSYSTEMS, Issue 2 2009
Colin G. Moore
Abstract 1.This study describes investigations into mapping of the biogenic reefs produced by the polychaete worm, Serpula vermicularis, for the purposes of conservation management. 2.Reef distribution throughout Loch Creran, Scotland, was mapped using a diver transect technique and was found to be restricted to a peripheral band, with a mean upper limit of distribution of 2.7 m. The mean lower limit was found to decrease with distance from the mouth of the loch, with a lower limit of 9.3 m in the lower basin rising to 6.6 m in the upper basin; the likely influence of a corresponding decrease in the upper depth distribution of muds is discussed. 3.Through determination of the mean width of the reef band and coastline length, the areal extent of the reef band was estimated as 108 ha, revealing Loch Creran to harbour the most extensive known development of S. vermicularis reef habitat in the world. 4.The utility of sidescan sonar in mapping serpulid reefs was examined in four of the major embayments. Reef material appeared as characteristic patterning on the sonargrams, with the morphology of individual larger reefs being discernible. 5.Sidescan sonar was found to be particularly valuable for the identification and monitoring of threats to the conservation of serpulid reefs. Sidescan sonar surveying was found to facilitate identification of loss of habitat extent resulting from anthropogenic activities such as moorings, aquaculture installations and dredging and can also be used to monitor the potentially damaging activity of otter trawling. Further improvements in the mode of deployment of sidescan sonar are discussed. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]

Horizontal ridge augmentation using autogenous block grafts and the guided bone regeneration technique with collagen membranes: a clinical study with 42 patients

CLINICAL ORAL IMPLANTS RESEARCH, Issue 4 2006
Thomas Von Arx
Abstract Objective: To analyze the clinical outcome of horizontal ridge augmentation using autogenous block grafts covered with anorganic bovine bone mineral (ABBM) and a bioabsorbable collagen membrane. Material and methods: In 42 patients with severe horizontal bone atrophy, a staged approach was chosen for implant placement following horizontal ridge augmentation. A block graft was harvested from the symphysis or retromolar area, and secured to the recipient site with fixation screws. The width of the ridge was measured before and after horizontal ridge augmentation. The block graft was subsequently covered with ABBM and a collagen membrane. Following a tension-free primary wound closure and a mean healing period of 5.8 months, the sites were re-entered, and the crest width was re-assessed prior to implant placement. Results: Fifty-eight sites were augmented, including 41 sites located in the anterior maxilla. The mean initial crest width measured 3.06 mm. At re-entry, the mean width of the ridge was 7.66 mm, with a calculated mean gain of horizontal bone thickness of 4.6 mm (range 2,7 mm). Only minor surface resorption of 0.36 mm was observed from augmentation to re-entry. Conclusions: The presented technique of ridge augmentation using autogenous block grafts with ABBM filler and collagen membrane coverage demonstrated successful horizontal ridge augmentation with high predictability. The surgical method has been further simplified by using a resorbable membrane. The hydrophilic membrane was easy to apply, and did not cause wound infection in the rare instance of membrane exposure. [source]

Growth of North Alboran Sea sardine larvae estimated by otolith microstructure, nucleic acids and protein content

JOURNAL OF FISH BIOLOGY, Issue 2 2001
T. Ramírez
Wet mass and DNA, RNA and protein content increased significantly with standard length (LS) of sardine Sardina pilchardus larvae, collected in January 1995, in the Bay of Málaga, North Alboran Sea. LS, wet mass and DNA, RNA and protein content were closely related allometrically to otolith radius (R). Larval daily length increments decreased but DNA, protein and wet mass daily increments increased with larval age. Daily length increments showed a negative and poor relationship with long-term otolith growth. In contrast, DNA, protein and wet mass daily increments were positively correlated. Differences between observed and back-calculated otolith radius-at-age indicated that larvae with slow otolith growth were under represented in older age groups, suggesting the existence of growth-selective mortality. Recent otolith growth, estimated from the mean widths of the last six increments, increased with age and R. Individual RNA: DNA and protein: DNA ratios were correlated significantly, although weakly, with LS and larval growth. [source]

Early loading (2 or 6 weeks) of sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA) ITI® implants in the posterior mandible

CLINICAL ORAL IMPLANTS RESEARCH, Issue 2 2004
A 1-year randomized controlled clinical trial
Abstract: The aim of this 1-year prospective controlled clinical trial was to evaluate the effect of early loading of ITI® solid screw titanium implants with a sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA) surface on clinical and radiographic parameters. Material and methods: Twenty-seven consecutively admitted patients presenting bilateral edentulous posterior mandibular areas and in need of prosthetic reconstruction were recruited. Sixty-seven ITI® standard solid screw implants with an SLA surface, a diameter of 4.1 mm and a length of 8, 10 or 12 mm were installed bilaterally in molar and premolar areas according to a one-stage surgical protocol. One week (test) and 5 weeks (control) after implant placement, solid ITI® prosthetic abutments were connected using a torque of 35 N cm. No provisional restoration was fabricated. Two weeks (test) and 6 weeks (control) after implant placement, porcelain-fused-to-metal single-tooth crowns were cemented. Clinical measurements were obtained at day 0 and 2, 6, 12, 24 and 52 weeks thereafter. Periapical radiographs were taken immediately after implant placement, after 6 weeks and at the 1-year examination. Results: After 1 year, implant survival was 100%. Two test and one control implants rotated at the time of abutment connection and were left unloaded for 12 additional weeks. At the 1-year examination, no statistically significant differences were found between the test and control sites with respect to pocket probing depths (2.6 mm±0.5 vs. 2.7 mm±0.5), mean clinical attachment levels (3.1 mm±0.4 vs. 3.2 mm±0.5), mean percentages of sites bleeding on probing (9.7% vs. 8.3%), mean widths of keratinized mucosa (1.8 mm±0.4 vs. 1.9 mm±0.5), mean PerioTest® values (,1.4 PTV±0.9 vs. ,1.6 PTV±0.8) or mean crestal bone loss measurements (0.57 mm±0.49 vs. 0.72 mm±0.50). Conclusion: Based on these results, loading of titanium implants with an SLA surface as early as 2 weeks did not appear to jeopardize the osseointegration healing process in the posterior mandible. Furthermore, implants rotating at 35 N cm, if left unloaded for additional 12 weeks, did not negatively affect clinical and radiographic outcomes. [source]
