A minimum sample size required from Schmidt hammer measurements

Abstract The Schmidt hammer is a useful tool applied by geomorphologists to measure rock strength in field conditions. The essence of field application is to obtain a sufficiently large dataset of individual rebound values, which yields a meaningful numerical value of mean strength. Although there is general agreement that a certain minimum sample size is required to proceed with the statistics, the choice of size (i.e. number of individual impacts) was usually intuitive and arbitrary. In this paper we show a simple statistical method, based on the two-sample Student's t -test, to objectively estimate the minimum number of rebound measurements. We present the results as (1) the ,mean' and ,median' solutions, each providing a single estimate value, and (2) the empirical probability distribution of such estimates based on many field samples. Schmidt hammer data for 14 lithologies, 13,81 samples for each, with each sample consisting of 40 individual readings, have been evaluated, assuming different significance levels. The principal recommendations are: (1) the recommended minimum sample size for weak and moderately strong rock is 25; (2) a sample size of 15 is sufficient for sandstones and shales; (3) strong and coarse rocks require 30 readings at a site; (4) the minimum sample size may be reduced by one-third if the context of research allows for higher significance level for test statistics. Experience Plays a Role in Female Preference for Symmetry in the Swordtail Fish Xiphophorus malinche

Variation in female mating preferences was previously detected in wild-caught Xiphophorus cortezi and Xiphophorus malinche females: smaller (presumed younger) females preferred symmetrical males, while larger (presumed older) females preferred asymmetrical males. We examined the influence of experience on this variation in female preference by determining if X. malinche females would express a preference for symmetry as virgins, shift their preferences for bar symmetry as they got larger (older) and if experience with males of different bar number symmetry could explain the variation in female preference previously detected. Virgin females exhibited no preference for vertical bar number symmetry when tested in the young- or old-age classes. However, young virgins spent more time with the opposite treatment in the second when compared with first test, indicating an ability to detect the difference between symmetry and asymmetry, and potentially a preference to mate with multiple males. When females were reared in one of three treatments, housed with symmetrical, barless or both symmetrical and asymmetrical males, we detected both a treatment and tank effect on strength of preference for symmetry, suggesting that barring pattern and some other aspect of the social environment influenced the development of this mating preference. Finally, we detected no effect of age class on mean strength of preference for symmetry; however, there was a statistically different relationship between female size and strength of preference for symmetry across the two age classes, suggesting that the preference function for symmetry may not be linear in relation to female size. Supraspinatus tendon repair into a bony trough in the rabbit: Mechanical restoration and correlative imaging

Abstract Recurrence of tears is a common complication after rotator cuff surgery. Retearing seems to occur early after surgery and may be attributed to too early or too vigorous exercises. We found no experimental data correlating the strength of the rotator cuff early after surgery and imaging. Our objectives were to measure the peak load to failure of rabbit supraspinatus tendon,bone constructs at early times postoperatively, to determine their mode of failure, and to determine whether computed tomography (CT) can predict their strength. We divided one supraspinatus tendon of 40 adult female white New Zealand rabbits and, after resection of the enthesis, sutured the tendon into a bony trough. Ten rabbits were killed immediately and 10 each at 1, 2, and 6 weeks postoperatively. The explanted tendons of both shoulders were imaged on CT and tested to failure. Compared to normal tendons (mean 210,±,42 N), the mean strength was very low at 0 weeks (57,±,21 N) and 1 week (86,±,33 N) (both p,<,0.05); it had recovered by 6 weeks (324,±,66 N). Early on, suture pullout was the most common mode of failure, whereas at 6 weeks, mid-substance tears predominated (p,<,0.05). Hypoattenuation on CT was associated with increased strength of the tendon,bone construct (p,<,0.05). The strength of the surgical construct is very low in the early postoperative period. Monitoring processes with data censored owing to competing risks by using exponentially weighted moving average control charts

In industry, process monitoring is widely employed to detect process changes rapidly. However, in some industrial applications observations are censored. For example, when testing breaking strengths and failure times often a limited stress test is performed. With censored observations, a direct application of traditional monitoring procedures is not appropriate. When the censoring occurs due to competing risks, we propose a control chart based on conditional expected values to detect changes in the mean strength. To protect against possible confounding caused by changes in the mean of the censoring mechanism we also suggest a similar chart to detect changes in the mean censoring level. We provide an example of monitoring bond strength to illustrate the application of this methodology. [source]
