Selected AbstractsPlanar Droplet Sizing for the Characterization of Droplet Clusters in an Industrial Gun-Type BurnerPARTICLE & PARTICLE SYSTEMS CHARACTERIZATION, Issue 3 2003Laurent Zimmer Abstract An important problem in spray combustion deals with the existence of dense regions of droplets, called clusters. To understand their formation mechanism, the droplet dynamics and fuel concentration profile are investigated by means of planar laser techniques in an industrial gun-type burner. The simultaneous measurement of elastic Mie scattering and Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) allows the instantaneous measurement of the Sauter Mean Diameter (SMD), after proper calibration. Using two different CCDs to get the two signals requires a detailed calibration of the CCD response before getting absolute diameters. Pixels are binned 6 by 6 to obtain the final SMD map, this is a compromise between spatial accuracy and noise. Velocity field is measured on both sets of images using standard Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) algorithms. The comparison of cross-correlation technique with PDA results shows that the velocity measured on the LIF images are close to the velocity based on D30, whereas the Mie scattering results are similar to D20. On Mie scattering images, regions of high interfacial area forming clusters can be detected. A special tracking scheme is used to characterize their dynamics in terms of velocity and diameters by ensuring that the same volume of fluid is tracked. It is shown that the clusters have a velocity similar to the velocity of droplets with the same diameter as the mean SMD of the cluster. It is also shown that an increase of pressure tends to trigger the appearance of such a group of droplets, due to a smaller diameter of the droplets caused by the increase of pressure discharge. Uncertainties for the different techniques used are discussed. [source] Reverse flow facial artery as recipient vessel for perforator flapsMICROSURGERY, Issue 6 2009D.D.S., Frank Hölzle M.D., Ph.D. In perforator flaps, anastomosis between flap and recipient vessels in the neck area is often difficult due to small vessel diameter and short pedicle. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the retrograde flow of the distal, paramandibular part of the facial artery would provide sufficient pressure and size to perfuse perforator flaps. Before and after occlusion of the contralateral facial artery, retrograde and anterograde arterial pressure was measured on both sides of the facial artery in 50 patients. The values were compared with the mean systemic arterial pressure. Diameters of facial arteries in the paramandibular region and perforator flap vessels were evaluated by morphometry. Arterial pressure in the distal facial artery with retrograde flow was 76% of the systemic arterial pressure. The latter equaled approximately the anterograde arterial pressure in the proximal end of the facial artery. Mean arterial pressure of the facial arteries decreased after proximal occlusion of the contralateral facial artery, which was not significant (P = 0.09). Mean diameter of the distal facial arteries in the mandibular region was 1.6 mm (range 1.3,2.2 mm; standard deviation 0.3 mm; n = 50), that of the perforator flap arteries 1.3 mm (0.9,2.6 mm; 0.4 mm; n = 20). Facial arteries, based on reverse flow, successfully supported all 20 perforator flaps. Retrograde pulsatile flow in the distal facial artery sustains perforator flaps even if the contralateral facial artery is occluded. Proximity of the distal facial arteries to the defect compensates for short pedicles. Matching diameters of the arteries are ideal for end-to-end anastomosis. © 2009 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Kow Abstract Nano-Precipitated CaCO3 (NPCC) are coated with stearic acid to improve its dispersion in polymer as well as to reduce agglomeration. In this work, coating was done by wet method using ethanol. Ultrasonication was applied to NPCC to de-agglomerate micron size NPCC into smaller size. Effects of amplitude, temperature and energy input of ultrasonication was investigated. The amplitude was varied from 60% to 100% whereas temperature was varied from 5°C to 45°C. The energy input was stressed up from 3.6 kJ to 180 kJ. Mean diameter of NPCC were observed by using Particle Size Analyzer and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). It was found that mean diameter of NPCC do not vary significantly with temperature. Mean diameter of NPCC, however, decreases exponentially with the energy input. Comparisons were done on NPCC coated with others methods such as dry ball milling and aqueous coating. TEM images show that coating NPCC with ultrasonication is more uniform than other methods. In addition, first derivative mass loss with temperature (DTG) reveals that NPCC coated with ultrasonication do not contain excessive free acid as exhibited by those coated in aqueous and dry ball milling. [source] The quality and size of yolk sac in early pregnancy lossAUSTRALIAN AND NEW ZEALAND JOURNAL OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY, Issue 5 2006Fu-Nan CHO Abstract Background:, Accurate differentiation between normal pregnancy and pregnancy loss in early gestation remains a clinical challenge. Aims:, To determine whether ultrasound findings of yolk sac size and morphology are valuable in relation to pregnancy loss at six to ten weeks gestation. Methods:, Transvaginal ultrasonography was performed in 111 normal singleton pregnancies, 25 anembryonic gestations, and 18 missed abortions. Mean diameters of gestational sac and yolk sac were measured. The relationship between yolk sacs and gestational sacs in normal pregnancies was depicted. The yolk sacs ultrasound findings in cases of pregnancy loss were recorded. Results:, In normal pregnancies with embryonic heartbeats, a deformed or an absent yolk sac was never detected. Sequential appearance of yolk sac, embryonic heartbeats and amniotic membrane was essential for normal pregnancy. The largest yolk sac in viable pregnancies was 8.1 mm. Findings in anembryonic gestations included an absent yolk sac, an irregular-shaped yolk sac and a relatively large yolk sac (> 95% upper confidence limits, in 11 cases). In cases of missed abortion with prior existing embryonic heartbeats, abnormal findings included a relatively large, a progressively regressing, a relatively small, and a deformed yolk sac (an irregular-shaped yolk sac, an echogenic spot, or a band). Conclusion:, A very large yolk sac may exist in normal pregnancy. When embryonic heartbeats exist, the poor quality and early regression of a yolk sac are more specific than the large size of a yolk sac in predicting pregnancy loss. When an embryo is undetectable, a relatively large yolk sac, even of normal shape, may be an indicator of miscarriage. [source] A quantitative study of the optic nerve in diabetic mutant, Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) ratsCONGENITAL ANOMALIES, Issue 4 2001Kazuhiko Sawada ABSTRACT, Optic nerves of the Otsuka Long-Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rat, an animal model of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus, were examined using quantitative stereological procedures. At 67 weeks of age, OLETF rats showed a mild hyperglycemia: their blood glucose level was 196 ± 93 mg/dl, significantly higher than that of non-diabetic control Long-Evans Tokushima Otsuka (LETO) rats (110 ± 24 mg/dl). However, there were no differences in the cross sectional area of optic nerves (the mean minimum diameter), the total number and mean diameter of both myelinated and non-myelinated fibers, or the thickness of the myelin sheath between OLETF and LETO rats. The results suggested that a mild hyperglycemia in OLETF rats could not cause any morphological changes in the optic nerve. [source] Characterization of the in vitro adherence behavior of ultrasound responsive double-shelled microspheres targeted to cellular adhesion moleculesCONTRAST MEDIA & MOLECULAR IMAGING, Issue 6 2006Susanne Ottoboni Abstract We have developed novel adhesion molecule-targeted double-shelled microspheres which encapsulate nitrogen. We report in vitro targeting studies utilizing these microspheres conjugated to target-specific antibodies directed towards ICAM-1 and VCAM-1. In static adherence experiments, the adherence patterns of microspheres conjugated to three different monoclonal antibodies (two targeted to ICAM-1 and one to VCAM-1) to their target surfaces were very different. Maximum microsphere adherence at the lowest target and/or ligand densities was observed with the VCAM-1 system. Differences in target-specific adherence were also observed between anti-ICAM-1 and anti-VCAM-1 microsphere conjugates in flow adherence studies. Equilibrium binding studies of the target proteins in solution to the microsphere-bound ligands showed that the affinity constants of two microsphere-bound monoclonal antibodies for their target proteins are similar. Thus, ligand,target affinity is not the only determinant of microsphere adherence to the target surface in our systems. Shear stress was found to have an effect on the mean diameter of adhered microspheres; a decrease in the mean diameter with increasing shear was observed. The magnitude of this effect was dependent on both microsphere-bound ligand and target surface densities, with a more pronounced change at lower densities. [source] Synthesis, Characterisation and Optical Properties of Silica Nanoparticles Coated with Anthracene Fluorophore and Thiourea Hydrogen-Bonding SubunitsEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF INORGANIC CHEMISTRY, Issue 36 2008Pilar Calero Abstract Bifunctionalised hybrid silica nanoparticles have been synthesised and characterised, and their optical emission properties in the presence of certain anions in acetonitrile solutions have been studied. The alkoxysilane derivatives N -butyl- N, -[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]thiourea (1), N -phenyl- N, -[3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl]thiourea (2) and 3-[(anthracen-10-yl)methylthio]propyltriethoxysilane (3) were prepared and used to functionalise uncoated LUDOX silica nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 18,±,2 nm. The functionalisation of the nanoparticle surfaces was carried out by two different approaches. The first approach relies on the consecutive grafting of the two subunits. In this protocol, the nanoparticles were first functionalised with anthracene derivative 3 (solid NA), and then treated with the corresponding binding sites 1 or 2 to result in the NA-Pt3 and NA-Bt3 solids. The second approach deals with the simultaneous grafting of 1 or 2 and the signalling subunit 3 in different ratios. This method was used for the preparation of the NA1Pt1, NA1Bt1, NA1Pt3 and NA1Bt3 nanoparticles. The bifunctionalised silica nanoparticles were characterised by using standard techniques. Acetonitrile suspensions of NA nanoparticles (5 mg in 20 mL) showed anthracene bands centred at ca. 350, 370 and 390 nm. Upon excitation at 365 nm, a typical emission band with fine structure in the 390,450 nm range was observed. Similar absorption and emission spectra were found for the bifunctionalised nanoparticles. The work is completed with a prospective study of the fluorescence of the prepared nanoparticles in the presence of organic (acetate, benzoate) and inorganic (F,, Cl,, Br,, CN,, HSO4, and H2PO4,) anions. WITZELL Summary During the autumn of 1999, the occurrence of the ascomycete Anisogramma virgultorum on saplings of Betula pubescens and Betula pendula was studied in two stands of B. pubescens, two stands of B. pendula and two mixed (B. pubescens and Pinus sylvestris) stands (age approximately 10 years, mean height 2,4 m, d.b.h. 10,20 mm) in a district in the vicinity of Umeå, northern Sweden. Stem and branch cankers associated with A. virgultorum were found on 54.8% of the investigated saplings, without significant difference between B. pendula and B. pubescens. Cankers were observed on 16.0% of stems and on branches of 54.2% of the saplings. Stem cankers appeared on the current year's shoot, as well as at the base of the trees. The mean diameter of the damaged saplings was significantly greater than the mean diameter of undamaged saplings. All samples of cankers with stromata examined in the laboratory showed perithecia with asci. Résumé Anisogramma virgultorum sur jeunes plants de Betula pendula et Betula pubescens dans un district du nord de la Suède Pendant l'été 1999, le développement de l'ascomycète Anisogramma virgultorum a étéétudié sur de jeunes plants de Betula pendula et Betula pubescens dans deux peuplements de B. pubescens, deux peuplements de B. pendula et deux peuplements mélangés (B. pubescens et Pinus sylvestris) (âge: environ 10 ans, hauteur moyenne: 2 à 4 m, dbh: 10 à 20 mm), dans un district près d'Umeå au nord de la Suède. Des chancres de tige et de branches associés àA. virgultorum ont été trouvés sur 54,8% des plants, sans différences significative entre B. pendula et B. pubescens. Les chancres de tige étaient présents sur 16% des plants, et les chancres de branches sur 54,2%. Les chancres de tige étaient situés sur les pousses de l'année en cours aussi bien qu'à la base des arbres. La diamètre moyen des plants attaqués était significativement plus grand que celui des arbres sains. Tous les chancres avec stromas examinés au laboratoire présentaient des périthèces avec des asques. Bei 54,8 % der untersuchten Bäumchen wurden an Stamm und Zweigen Krebse gefunden, die für A.virgultorum typisch sind. Zwischen B. pendula und B. pubescens gab es keine signifikanten Unterschiede. Bei 16 % der Pflanzen wurden Krebse an den Stämmen, bei 54,2 % an den Zweigen beobachtet. Die Stammkrebse traten sowohl am diesjährigen Gipfeltrieb auf als auch an der Stammbasis. Der mittlere Durchmesser geschädigter Pflanzen war signifikant grösser als derjenige von ungeschädigten Pflanzen. [source] Kinetically Controlled Synthesis of Hexagonally Close-Packed Cobalt Nanorods with High Magnetic CoercivityADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 12 2009Yaghoub Soumare Abstract High-quality monodisperse metallic cobalt nanorods are obtained by the reduction of carboxylate salts of CoII in 1,2-butanediol using a rapid, simple, and solid-template-free procedure. In this polyol process, particle shape can be controlled via the growth rate, which depends on three parameters: i) the nature of the cobalt carboxylate, ii) the temperature ramp, and iii) the basicity of the medium. Cobalt in the hexagonally close-packed phase favored the growth of anisotropic particles. Magnetic measurements of the cobalt nanorods indicate they are ferromagnetic at room temperature. They have a very high coercivity of 9.0 kOe at 140,K, much higher than that observed for wires prepared with solid templates. This can be attributed to their small mean diameter and high crystallinity. [source] Synthesis and Optical Properties of KYF4/Yb, Er Nanocrystals, and their Surface Modification with Undoped KYF4,ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 19 2008Helmut Schäfer Abstract KYF4/Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals with a mean diameter of approximately 13,nm were synthesized at 200,°C in the high boiling organic solvent N -(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine (HEEDA). The particles crystallize in the cubic phase known from , -NaYF4 and form transparent colloidal solutions in tetraethylene glycol (TEG) or propanol. Solutions containing 1,wt % of the nanocrystals in TEG display visible upconversion emission upon continuous wave (CW) excitation at 978,nm. Growing undoped KYF4 on the surface of the KYF4/Yb3+, Er3+ nanocrystals increases the upconversion efficiency by more than a factor of 20. The XRD data of these particles, display a slight increase in the mean particle size from 13 to 15.5,nm, indicating that only a part of the subsequently added KYF4 shell material is deposited onto the particle surface. Nevertheless the performed surface modification obviously leads to core/shell structured particles. [source] Synthesis of Indium and Indium Oxide Nanoparticles from Indium Cyclopentadienyl Precursor and Their Application for Gas Sensing,ADVANCED FUNCTIONAL MATERIALS, Issue 7 2003K. Soulantica Abstract Decomposition of the organometallic precursor [In(,5 -C5H5)] in toluene in the presence of methanol (8 vol.-%) at room temperature leads to the immediate formation of aggregates of indium nanoparticles of 15,±,2 nm mean diameter. The aggregates are roughly spherical with a mean size of 400,±,40 nm. The particles were characterized by means of transmission electron and high-resolution transmission electron microscopies (TEM and HRTEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies indicate that the powder consists of the tetragonal phase of indium. The thermal oxidation in air of these nanoparticles yields well-crystallized nanoparticles of In2O3 with unchanged morphology (aggregates of nanoparticles of 16.6,±,2 nm mean diameter with aggregate mean size of 400,±,40 nm) and without any sign of coalescence. XRD pattern shows that the powder consists of the cubic phase of In2O3. The electrical conductivity measurements demonstrate that this material is highly sensitive to an oxidizing gas such as nitrogen dioxide and barely sensitive to a reducing gas such as carbon monoxide. Its association with SnO2 -based sensors allows the selective detection of carbon monoxide (30 ppm) and sub-ppm amounts of nitrogen dioxide (400 ppb) in a mixture at 21,°C and at a relative humidity of 60,%. [source] Diagnosis of hepatic nodules 20 mm or smaller in cirrhosis: Prospective validation of the noninvasive diagnostic criteria for hepatocellular carcinoma,HEPATOLOGY, Issue 1 2008Alejandro Forner This study prospectively evaluates the accuracy of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and dynamic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the diagnosis of nodules 20 mm or smaller detected during ultrasound (US) surveillance. We included 89 patients with cirrhosis [median age, 65 years; male 53, hepatitis C virus 68, Child-Pugh A 80] without prior hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in whom US detected a small solitary nodule (mean diameter, 14 mm). Hepatic MRI, CEUS, and fine-needle biopsy (gold standard) (FNB) were performed at baseline. Non-HCC cases were followed (median 23 months) by CEUS/3 months and MRI/6 months. FNB was repeated up to 3 times and on detection of change in aspect/size. Intense arterial contrast uptake followed by washout in the delayed/venous phase was registered as conclusive for HCC. Final diagnoses were: HCC (n = 60), cholangiocarcinoma (n = 1), and benign lesions (regenerative/dysplastic nodule, hemangioma, focal nodular hyperplasia) (n = 28). Sex, cirrhosis cause, liver function, and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels were similar between HCC and non-HCC groups. HCC patients were older and their nodules significantly larger (P < 0.0001). First biopsy was positive in 42 of 60 HCC patients. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of conclusive profile were 61.7%, 96.6%, 97.4%, and 54.9%, for MRI, 51.7%, 93.1%, 93.9%, and 50.9%, for CEUS. Values for coincidental conclusive findings in both techniques were 33.3%, 100%, 100%, and 42%. Thus, diagnosis of HCC 20 mm or smaller can be established without a positive biopsy if both CEUS and MRI are conclusive. However, sensitivity of these noninvasive criteria is 33% and, as occurs with biopsy, absence of a conclusive pattern does not rule out malignancy. SANTOS Abstract The Lusitanian and the Mediterranean pine voles (Microtus lusitanicus Gerbe, 1879 and Microtus duodecimcostatus de Selys-Longchamps, 1839) are fossorial sister species and have an allopatric pattern of distribution in Portugal, which includes a potential sympatry area in the centre of the country. The present study aimed to determine the validity of using presence signs in the field for discrimination of the two species in an area of sympatry (Northern Alentejo) and the characteristics that achieve the best classification accuracy. A total of 175 trapping plots were sampled across the study area. Prior to the set up of traps, ten presence signs were randomly selected for measurements of four variables: proportion of soil mounds, mean diameter of mounds, proportion of burrow openings and mean diameter of burrow openings. On the basis of a classification tree analysis, results showed that presence signs can be used to discriminate plots inhabited by one or the other species in the studied sympatry area. The characteristic that most accurately enables species identification is the proportion of burrow openings: for every ten presence signs found in a plot, if more than eight have an opening, then it is inhabited by M. lusitanicus (i.e. mostly burrow openings with few or no mounds present); if eight or fewer have an opening, M. duodecimcostatus is present (i.e. mostly mounds with few or no burrow openings). [source] Radio-frequency ablation of renal cell carcinoma in patients who were at significant riskINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF UROLOGY, Issue 12 2004OSAMU UKIMURA Abstract, Objective:, Although radio-frequency ablation (RFA) has been recently applied as a minimally invasive treatment option for renal cell carcinoma (RCC), indication of this modality remains a critical issue due to the lack of complete tumor destruction as well as the uncertainty of its long-term efficacy. We report the efficacy of RFA for nine carefully selected patients with RCC who had significant reason to avoid invasive surgical treatment under general anesthesia. Methods:, Radio-frequency ablation was performed under epidural or local anesthesia by ultrasound or computed tomography (CT) guidance in nine patients with biopsy proven RCC (mean diameter, 38 mm; range, 20,53 mm), who were at significant operative or anesthetic risk for invasive surgery. Follow-up enhanced CT scans or magnetic resonance images were evaluated every 3,6 months and an evaluation of metastasis was performed every 6 months. Results:, At a mean follow-up of 17 months, seven (78%) of the nine patients with renal tumor showed no tumor enhancement. The renal function of all patients was well preserved. All patients were able to continue undergoing their respective treatments for active diseases in other organs in parallel to the RFA treatment. No distant metastasis, urine leakage were reported and one case of temporary hematuria and one case of peri-renal hemorrhage not requiring blood transfusion were encountered. Intra-operative ultrasonography was useful in the real-time monitoring of the minimally excessive extension of ablation into the normal parenchyma. Conclusion:, Radio-frequency ablation appears to be an effective and safe minimally invasive therapeutic option for selected patients with RCC who have reason to avoid invasive surgery under general anesthesia. [source] Reproduction and development in a vermetid gastropod, Vermetus triquetrusINVERTEBRATE BIOLOGY, Issue 4 2004Marta Calvo Abstract. We report on a study of reproduction and development in the Mediterranean vermetid gastropod Vermetus triquetrus from the SE coast of Spain. It is a gonochoristic species. The egg capsules are attached to the inside of the shell, and females brood up to 22 capsules simultaneously (more often 4,10). The capsules hold 10,61 eggs or embryos; the uncleaved eggs are yolk-rich, with a mean diameter of 377.3 ,m. A distinct polar lobe occurs during the first cleavage, and blastomere D has discernible qualities after the 4-cell stage. The formation of the mesentoblast 4d occurs at the transition from the 24-cell stage to the 25-cell stage. Gastrulation begins after the 36-cell stage. Internal yolk is the major source of nutrition for the encapsulated embryos, but some nurse eggs (, 12%) and some sibling larvae are also ingested by the developing embryos. Hatching occurs during the swimming/crawling pediveliger stage, and metamorphosis is completed outside the capsules soon after hatching. Hence, larval development in Vermetus triquetrus is lecithotrophic intracapsular, with a short free-swimming/crawling phase. Barton Abstract:, EntostatTM is an electrostatically charged wax powder that is used as a carrier particle in novel delivery systems for contaminating target insect pests with insecticides, biologicals or pheromones. Here, the adhesion of two forms of Entostat to the Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly) Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) was examined, and the adhesion of Entostat to live and dead medflies was compared. From controlled contaminations of medflies, it was shown that live medflies acquired larger quantities of Entostat than dead medflies, which could be due to the electrostatic charge shown to be carried by live insects. Air-milled Entostat (7.59 ,m mean diameter) adhered in larger quantities to medflies than pestle and mortar-ground Entostat (9.17 ,m mean diameter). Exposing medflies to different quantities of Entostat affected the initially adhering quantity but did not alter the proportion of powder retained over time. Medfly males contaminated with air-milled Entostat were shown to transfer small quantities to females during mating. This documentation of secondary powder transfer underscores the potential for using slow-acting killing agents on the basis of this delivery system. [source] Encapsulation efficiency and release behaviors of bovine serum albumin loaded in alginate microspheres prepared by sprayingJOURNAL OF APPLIED POLYMER SCIENCE, Issue 4 2008Jie Zhang Abstract Spraying and spraying with an electrostatic field (SEF) were employed to prepare alginate microspheres for delivering proteins, especially for intestinal digestive enzymes and cytokines. The encapsulation efficiency (EE) of a model protein [bovine serum albumin (BSA)] at a pH value lower than the isoelectric point was 20% higher than that at a natural pH. Moreover, for the microspheres prepared by SEF, EE improved significantly with increasing electric voltage. The interactions between BSA and the alginate microspheres were identified with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The release profiles in vitro showed a controlled and pH-responsive release manner for the encapsulated BSA. A first-order release equation was postulated and modified to describe the release kinetics with an obviously initial burst release related to the eroded porous matrix. The equation fit the release data well when the pH value and composition of the release media were changed. The analysis of the release kinetics indicated that the drug release rate was in an inverse ratio to the diameter of the microspheres. Increasing the gas flow rate or electric voltage decreased both the mean diameter and size distribution of the microspheres significantly and enhanced the release rate of loaded drugs from alginate microspheres. To date, this species has been considered absent from Argentina. This study also provides further data on the characterization of the A. franciscana populations from this area. Location, Province of Córdoba (Argentina). Methods, The cyst samples collected at the three hypersaline environments were measured to assess its mean diameter with a dissecting microscope. The length of the nauplii hatched from the cysts was also determined with the microscope. The adults raised from these nauplii under strictly controlled conditions were analysed for 12 morphological parameters and compared through multivariate discriminant analysis with other American populations. Fatty acids from the total lipids were analysed by gas chromatography. Reproductive compatibility was evaluated from single-pair intraspecific and interspecific crosses of adult specimens. Results, The results endorse the morphometric assimilation of the Artemia populations of this area to other American populations of the A. franciscana,super-species', together with its morphometric differentiation from the species A. persimilis (Piccinelli & Prosdocimi, 1968). The more conspicuous population from CHI shows cross-fertility with A. franciscana original from San Francisco Bay (California, USA). Both populations from CHI and TUN show cross-fertility between them and reproductive isolation with A. persimilis from Hidalgo (Province of La Pampa), which to date is considered to be endemic or exclusive of hypersaline ecosystems in Argentina. The reproductive characteristics displayed by the population from TUN lagoon suggest the existence of an occasional hybridization between A. franciscana and A. persimilis (Papeschi et al., 2000). Artemia cysts from CHI and TUN show a fatty acid profile rich in eicosapentaenoic acid differing markedly from the fatty acid profiles found in A. persimilis cysts. Main conclusions:,Artemia franciscana is present in Argentina at 36° S and north of this latitude. Artemia persimilis is confined to the south of latitude 37°10, S. The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of the powder particle distribution on various properties of one acrylic bone cement; namely, residual monomer content, Tmax, tset, complex viscosity, storage and loss moduli, injectability, and quasi-static compressive strength and modulus. These stands were considered for forest inventories after carrying out a random sampling scheme of 40 sample units of 30 m × 50 m. In each level pressure stand, the dbh and tree-height of identified tree-species were measured in each plot. Data analyses were based on the computation of structural parameters, establishment of diameter and height distributions and the floristic composition of the two types of stands. Results obtained showed higher values for the overall basal area (9.78 m2 ha,1), mean height (22.37 m) and mean diameter (36.92 cm) for A. leiocarpa in low-pressure stands. In high-pressure stands, some species like Afzelia africana had lower Importance Value Index and the frequency of A. leiocarpa trees in the successive diameter classes dropped rapidly and the value of the logarithmic slope of the height,diameter relationship was lower (9.77) indicating a lanky shape. Results obtained suggest that effective conservation is needed for A. leiocarpa stands under high pressure by limiting human interference and developing appropriate strategy for restoration purposes. Résumé Cette étude s'est focalisée sur l'analyse de la structure de peuplements naturels à dominance de Anogeissus leiocarpa, dans la forêt classée de Wari-Maro, qui subissent à certains endroits, des pressions anthropiques fortes et à d'autres endroits des pressions anthropiques minimes. Ces peuplements ont été inventoriés en considérant un échantillonnage aléatoire de 40 placeaux de 30 m × 50 m. Pour chaque niveau de pression, on a mesuré dans chaque placeau le diamètre à 1,3 m et la hauteur totale des arbres d'espèces identifiées. L'analyse des données s'est basée sur le calcul des paramètres structuraux, sur l'établissement de la distribution en diamètre et en hauteur et sur la composition floristique des peuplements des deux types de formation. Les résultats obtenus indiquent les plus grandes valeurs pour la surface terrière globale (9,78 m² ha,1), la hauteur moyenne (22,37 m) et le diamètre moyen (36,92 cm) chez A. leiocarpa dans les peuplements soumis à une faible pression. Dans les peuplements subissant une forte pression, certaines espèces comme Afzelia africana avaient les plus faibles Indices d'importance, la fréquence de A. leiocarpa dans les classes de hauteurs successives diminuait rapidement et la valeur de la pente logarithmique de la relation hauteur/diamètre était plus faible (9,77), ce qui indique une forme élancée. [source] Aboveground biomass estimation of the shrubs, Echiochilon fruticosum (Desf.) and Helianthemum kahiricum (Del.) in the arid zone rangelands of TunisiaAFRICAN JOURNAL OF ECOLOGY, Issue 1 2010Abdelkader Idi Abstract The knowledge of the plant biomass is very important for the assessment of the rangeland productivity. It could help to select the appropriate species for the improvement of natural ecosystems (rehabilitation, restoration and seedling). By examining different correlations between the biomass production and the volume parameters of two North African shrub species of high range value (Echiochilon fruticosum Desf. and Helianthemum kahiricum Del.), we aimed to establish the appropriate regression models, which could be useful for the prediction of the productivity of these species. The data showed a significant relationship between the total biomass (TB) production and the mean diameter (MD) of the studied species (R2 = 0.65 for Echiochilon and R2 = 0.75 for Helianthemum). Likewise, annual fresh production (leaves and current-year shoots) was well correlated with MD of Helianthemum (R2 = 0.82). However, the correlation between these two parameters was relatively low for Echiochilon (R2 = 0.42). Il peut être utile de sélectionner les espèces appropriées pour l'amélioration d'écosystèmes naturels (restauration, réhabilitation, plantations). En analysant différentes corrélations entre les paramètres de production de biomasse et de volume de deux espèces d'arbustes nord-africains de grande distribution (Echiochilon fruticosum Desf. et Helianthemum kahiricum Del.), nous avons voulu établir les modèles de régression appropriés qui pourraient servir pour prédire la productivité de ces espèces. [source] Study of the production of hydrogen bubbles at low current densities for electroflotation processesJOURNAL OF CHEMICAL TECHNOLOGY & BIOTECHNOLOGY, Issue 10 2010Carlos Jiménez Abstract BACKGROUND: Flotation processes are widely used in waste-water treatment and it is quite important to have a tool to determine and optimize the size distribution of the bubbles produced. In this work, the electrochemical production of bubbles to enhance the performance of electrocoagulation processes by flotation is studied. To do this, a current density range characteristic of electrocoagulation processes is used to produce microbubbles (<5 mA cm,2), instead of the higher values used in other studies to characterize electroflotation in non-combined processes. RESULTS: Current density and pH were found to influence the process significantly. In the range used, higher current densities allow a larger number of small size bubbles to be obtained, appropriate for use in electroflotation processes. However, at the boundaries of the range, the size of the bubbles was increased advising against use. Neutral pH values also favour the formation of small bubbles, and the presence of possible competing reactions have to be considered because they diminish the gas flow and affect the number of bubbles and their size. The roughness of the surface of the electrode material also has an important influence. CONCLUSIONS: The image acquisition and analysis system developed allows measurement of the size distribution of hydrogen bubbles in the range of current densities studied. Current density and pH seem to be the main parameters affecting the mean diameter of bubbles and the amount of gas produced, and the electrode material may also influence hydrogen production significantly. Copyright © 2010 Society of Chemical Industry [source] Characteristic imaging features of breast fibroadenomas in women given cyclosporin A after renal transplantationJOURNAL OF CLINICAL ULTRASOUND, Issue 2 2004Eun Ju Son MD Abstract Purpose This retrospective study was conducted to determine the characteristic imaging and histopathologic features of breast fibroadenomas in kidney-transplant recipients given chronic cyclosporin A immunosuppressive therapy after the transplantation and to compare these characteristics with those from a control group. Methods From January 1, 1990, through December 31, 1999, 486 women underwent renal transplantation at our institution. All patients subsequently received immunosuppressive therapy with cyclosporin A and prednisolone. Ten (2%) of these women had developed breast fibroadenomas during this chemotherapy. We compared the data obtained on this group's fibroadenomas with those obtained from those in the control group, which comprised 100 women with fibroadenomas but who had never undergone organ transplantation or immunosuppressive therapy. Results Twenty-two fibroadenomas developed in the 10 transplant recipients. Eight of those 10 had multiple lesions, and 7 were affected bilaterally. The mean diameter of the fibroadenomas was 4.2 ± 2.5 cm. Mammographically, the lesions were round or oval high-density masses with well-circumscribed margins and no calcification or spiculation. Sonographically, the lesions were relatively highly echogenic and had a lower ratio of the longitudinal to the anteroposterior diameter (L,/AP) than did those in the control group. Histopathologically, the features of these lesions were generally typical of fibroadenomas, but some were more typical of malignant lesions. Among the 100 control patients, 146 fibroadenomas developed; 33 women had multiple lesions, and 12 were affected bilaterally. Their fibroadenomas had a mean diameter of 2.1 ± 1.5 cm, and the imaging features of these lesions were typical of fibroadenomas. Conclusions The fibroadenomas that developed in kidney-transplant recipients given chronic cyclosporin A and prednisolone immunosuppressive therapy had a tendency to be multiple, bilateral, and larger than those that developed in the control patients. Mineral content of barberry fruits growing wild in Turkey was determined by inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. The average pulp mass ratio, thickness, width, length, mass, volume, geometric mean diameter, sphericity and projected area were measured as 75.59%, 3.51 mm, 3.32 mm, 7.69 mm, 0.07 g, 71 mm3, 4.46 mm, and 0.58 and 0.2535 cm2, respectively. The energy, reducing sugar, protein, cellulose, oil, ash, acidity, ascorbic acid, total phenolics, total anthocyanin and soluble solid matter values of barberry fruits were established as 69.25 kcal/g, 6.52%, 10.32%, 9.42%, 0.84%, 1.12%, 3.10%, 256.48 mg/kg, 789.32 mg/100 g, 931.05 mg/kg and 19.4%, respectively. It is very important to evaluate the technological properties of equipment used in harvesting, transportation, storage and processing of fresh fruits. Also, the information supplied on the proximate composition of the barberry fruit is highly beneficial for human nutrition. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS The chemical properties such as ascorbic acid, anthocyanin and phenolic compounds, reducing sugar, crude protein, crude fiber, crude oil, ash and mineral contents of barberry fruits are mostly important for human nutrition and processing. KIM ABSTRACT Hard red winter (HRW) and hard red spring (HRS) wheat milling coproducts (bran, germ, shorts, and red dog) from three commercial flour mills and the Kansas State University pilot mill were evaluated for differences in physical, chemical, and thermal properties. the ranges of bulk density for bran, germ, and red dog determined at three moisture levels were 146.5 to 205.2 kgm,3, 269.2 to 400.6 kgm,3, and 298.9 to 398.1 kgm,3, respectively. the true density ranking order was: red dog >shorts = germ >bran, independently of the moisture level. Red dog had the smallest geometrical mean diameter with the highest variation (coefficient of variation of 23.8%). There was a significant (P < 0.05) difference among wheat blends and milling flows in the thickness of bran and germ at the same particle separation size. the image analysis study determined that the equivalent projected area diameter of bran at the same separation size was significantly (P < 0.05) larger than that of germ. the ratio between the equivalent projected area diameter and the particle thickness were within ranges of 15.7 to 37.6 for bran and 15.5 to 32.2 for germ particles. the chemical composition (ash, protein, lipids and fiber) ranges were determined for each coproduct. Ranges of thermal conductivity for bran, germ, shorts, and red dog were 0.049 to 0.074, 0.054 to 0.0907, 0.057 to 0.076, and 0.063 to 0.080 W(mK),1, respectively. Specific heat of coproducts, measured with a differential scanning calorimeter, exhibited a wider range [1.08,1.94 kJ(kgK),1] than that observed in whole wheat kernels and wheat flour. the variability observed among the samples was due to the different wheat sources and characteristic milling flows for the flour mills. (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Models assessing the risk for bark beetle colonization of different kinds of storm gaps would be a valuable tool for management decisions. 2The present study aimed to determine which gap and landscape characteristics are correlated with the probability of colonization of wind-felled Norway spruce trees by I. typographus. 3The study included 36 storm gaps, varying in size from three to 1168 wind-felled spruces, created by the storm Gudrun in southern Sweden in January 2005. 4In the first summer, on average, 5% of the wind-felled spruces were colonized by I. typographus. The percentage of colonized wind-felled trees per gap was negatively correlated with the total area of storm gaps within 2000 m in the surrounding forest landscape. 5In the second summer, the proportion of colonized trees increased to 50%. Both gap (mean diameter of wind-felled trees and basal area of living spruce trees) and landscape variables (amount of spruce forest) were significantly correlated with colonization percentage and explained almost 50% of the variation between gaps. 6There was no relationship between gap area and colonization percentage. This implies that landscapes with many large storm gaps, where logging resources will be most effectively used, should be salvaged first. [source] Ulnar Artery as Access Site for Cardiac Catheterization: Anatomical ConsiderationsJOURNAL OF INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGY, Issue 1 2008DOBRIN VASSILEV M.D. Transradial approach to coronary angiography and angioplasty has been widely accepted in the last few years. As an alternative approach from the forearm, with some potential advantages, we decided to test the transulnar approach as a first-choice strategy. Methods and Results: Transulnar approach was tried in 131 patients. In 29 patients there was no palpable ulnar artery or Allen test was negative. From the remaining 92 patients we performed successful coronary angiography and angioplasties in 59 patients (64% success rate in those who had palpable artery). The most frequent reason for access site failure (54.5% of all failed procedures) was inability to introduce wire despite good arterial flow. We found that the ulnar artery was not the largest artery of the forearm (mean diameter 2.76 ± 0.08 mm compared with radial artery 3.11 ± 0.12 mm) and had relatively frequent anatomical anomalies,11.9%. There were no major local complications, with very few minor complications. Spasm frequency was 13.6%, which is higher than that reported for transradial studies. Conclusions: Transulnar artery approach is feasible for cardiac catheterization: however, it has higher access site failure rates in an unselected patient population. It could be used as an alternative option in selected patients, but operators must be prepared to overcome frequent anatomical anomalies and spasm. [source] Experimental and numerical investigation of the precipitation of barium sulfate in a rotating liquid film reactorAICHE JOURNAL, Issue 8 2009Shengchang Guo Abstract Precipitation of nanosized barium sulfate in a rotating liquid film reactor (RLFR) has been investigated experimentally and through simulations based on the computational fluid dynamics technique including the population balance equation coupled with the Navier,Stokes equations, renormalization group k,, model equations, and species transport equations. A comparative experiment was carried out involving conventional precipitation in a flask. The structure of the precipitate was identified by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), which showed that the crystals obtained using the RLFR were smaller in size than those obtained in the flask. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images demonstrated that the crystals produced by the two different processes had different morphologies. Further detailed experiments involving varying the operating parameters of the RLFR were performed to investigate the effects on crystal size distribution (CSD). Increasing the speed of the rotor in the RLFR in the range 1000,5000 rpm or increasing the rotor-stator gap in the range 0.1,0.5 mm resulted in a decrease in particle size and narrower particle size distributions. The simulation results suggested that turbulent effects and reaction processes in the effective reactor space were directly related to rotor speed and rotor-stator gap. The simulated volume weighted mean diameter and CSD of particles of barium sulfate were almost identical to the corresponding experimental results obtained using TEM and laser particle size analyzer. Y. G. Lemetter Abstract Scale-up of complex coacervation, a fat encapsulation technology, is not trivial since the microcapsules morphology and size are highly affected by the processing conditions. So far it has been achieved empirically (trial and error approach). The goal of this study was to produce at various scale capsules with a single-oil droplet as the core material and small enough to be below sensory threshold. The turbulence level was identified as the main scale-up criterium and a master-curve could be drafted showing the capsule mean diameter as function of the Reynolds number, independent of the level of production scale. From a parent emulsion with specific oil droplets size (12,15 ,m), the Reynolds number had to be maintained above a critical value (15,000) to avoid capsules agglomeration with multiple oil cores and large particle sizes. To avoid aggregation, this turbulence level had to be kept until the temperature dropped below a critical value (14°C for a cooling rate of 35°C/2 h). Decamps Abstract A novel continuous two-phase dispersion process was developed to produce ,-carrageenan gel microspheres, using static mixers. It was shown that yeast-loaded carrageenan beads, with controlled diameter and tight size distribution, can be produced on a continuous basis, in a scalable mixer, at production rates appropriate to both pilot plant,scale and, potentially, industrial-scale operations. Immobilized yeast are intended to be used in continuous brewing operations. The effects of the static mixer diameter (D), the number of mixing elements (Ne), the fluid linear velocity (V), and the volumetric fraction (,) of ,-carrageenan, on the mean diameter and size distribution of the resulting gel microspheres, were studied. Image analysis showed that mean diameter was strongly influenced by the average linear fluid velocity through the mixer, and by the mixer diameter. The number of mixer elements and the mixer diameter governed bead size dispersion. A productivity of 10 L h,1 of beads was attained using a 1.27-cm-diameter static mixer. Because the productivity is proportional to the mixer diameter squared, this process, although suited for the production of small-size beads (down to 50 ,m), would be technically and economically feasible for a large industrial immobilization process.
