    BACKGROUND MATCHING AND COLOR-CHANGE PLASTICITY IN COLONIZING FRESHWATER SCULPIN POPULATIONS FOLLOWING RAPID DEGLACIATION

    Anthropogenic-induced change is forcing organisms to shift their distributions and colonize novel habitats at an increasing rate, which leads to complex interactions among evolutionary processes. Coastrange sculpin (Cottus aleuticus) have colonized recently deglaciated streams of Glacier Bay in Alaska within the last 220 years. We examined divergence among populations in background matching coloration and tested the hypothesis that observed variation is due to morphological color plasticity. To examine how color-change plasticity has interacted with other evolutionary processes, we also determined the influence of colonization on neutral genetic diversity. We observed clinal variation in substrate-matching fish color along the chronological continuum of streams. Microsatellites provided little evidence of genetic subdivision among sculpin populations. Fish color was significantly correlated to substrate color, but was not correlated to neutral population genetic structure. Furthermore, a laboratory experiment revealed that morphological color plasticity could explain much, but not all, of the observed fish color divergence. Our study demonstrates that sculpin in Glacier Bay have colonized and adapted to recently deglaciated habitat and suggests that color change plasticity has aided in this process. This research, therefore, highlights the important role phenotypic plasticity may play in the adaptation of species to rapid climate change. [source]


    SOME PRACTICAL GUIDANCE FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF PROPENSITY SCORE MATCHING

    Abstract Propensity score matching (PSM) has become a popular approach to estimate causal treatment effects. It is widely applied when evaluating labour market policies, but empirical examples can be found in very diverse fields of study. Once the researcher has decided to use PSM, he is confronted with a lot of questions regarding its implementation. To begin with, a first decision has to be made concerning the estimation of the propensity score. Following that one has to decide which matching algorithm to choose and determine the region of common support. Subsequently, the matching quality has to be assessed and treatment effects and their standard errors have to be estimated. Furthermore, questions like ,what to do if there is choice-based sampling?' or ,when to measure effects?' can be important in empirical studies. Finally, one might also want to test the sensitivity of estimated treatment effects with respect to unobserved heterogeneity or failure of the common support condition. Each implementation step involves a lot of decisions and different approaches can be thought of. The aim of this paper is to discuss these implementation issues and give some guidance to researchers who want to use PSM for evaluation purposes. [source]


    ON THE IMPACT OF LABOR MARKET MATCHING ON REGIONAL DISPARITIES,

    ABSTRACT We propose a model where imperfect matching between firms and workers on local labor markets leads to incentives for spatial agglomeration. We show that the occurrence of spatial agglomeration depends on initial size differences in terms of both number of workers and firms. Allowing for dynamics of workers' and firms' location choices, we show that the spatial outcome depends crucially on different dimensions of agents' mobility. The effect of a higher level of human capital on regional disparities depends on whether it makes workers more mobile or more specialized on the labor market. [source]


    MATCHING RESULTS OF TWO INDEPENDENT HIGHLY TRAINED SENSORY PANELS USING DIFFERENT DESCRIPTIVE ANALYSIS METHODS,

    ABSTRACT Two independent, highly trained panels separately conducted descriptive analysis of orange juices using different descriptive analysis methods and sets of samples. Lexicons were developed independently. One panel evaluated 23 orange juice products and identified and referenced 24 attributes. The other panel evaluated 17 products and identified 17 attributes for testing. Though not identical, the lexicons developed by both panels were similar overall. To compare the sensory space of the product category, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and sensory maps were developed separately for each panel. The comparison showed that the underlying sample spaces obtained from both panels were comparable in many ways. Key flavor characteristics for the same types of orange juice products were described similarly by both panels. These data indicate that the process of using highly trained panels that define attributes and use reference standards for descriptive sensory analysis can give objective and comparable information for a product category across different panels.     A CASE-BASED DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR INDIVIDUAL STRESS DIAGNOSIS USING FUZZY SIMILARITY MATCHING

    Stress diagnosis based on finger temperature (FT) signals is receiving increasing interest in the psycho-physiological domain. However, in practice, it is difficult and tedious for a clinician and particularly less experienced clinicians to understand, interpret, and analyze complex, lengthy sequential measurements to make a diagnosis and treatment plan. The paper presents a case-based decision support system to assist clinicians in performing such tasks. Case-based reasoning (CBR) is applied as the main methodology to facilitate experience reuse and decision explanation by retrieving previous similar temperature profiles. Further fuzzy techniques are also employed and incorporated into the CBR system to handle vagueness, uncertainty inherently existing in clinicians reasoning as well as imprecision of feature values. Thirty-nine time series from 24 patients have been used to evaluate the approach (matching algorithms) and an expert has ranked and estimated similarity. On average goodness-of-fit for the fuzzy matching algorithm is 90% in ranking and 81% in similarity estimation that shows a level of performance close to an experienced expert. Therefore, we have suggested that a fuzzy matching algorithm in combination with CBR is a valuable approach in domains, where the fuzzy matching model similarity and case preference is consistent with the views of domain expert. This combination is also valuable, where domain experts are aware that the crisp values they use have a possibility distribution that can be estimated by the expert and is used when experienced experts reason about similarity. This is the case in the psycho-physiological domain and experienced experts can estimate this distribution of feature values and use them in their reasoning and explanation process. [source]


    Texture Synthesis using Exact Neighborhood Matching

    Abstract In this paper we present an elegant pixel-based texture synthesis technique that is able to generate visually pleasing results from source textures of both stochastic and structured nature. Inspired by the observation that the most common artifacts that occur when synthesizing textures are high-frequency discontinuities, our technique tries to avoid these artifacts by forcing at least one of the direct neighboring pixels in each causal neighborhood to match within a predetermined threshold. This does not only avoid deterioration of the visual quality, but also results in faster synthesis timings. We demonstrate our technique on a variety of stochastic and structured textures. [source]


    Semi-Automatic 3D Reconstruction of Urban Areas Using Epipolar Geometry and Template Matching

    The main challenge is to compute the relevant information,building's height and volume, roof's description, and texture,algorithmically, because it is very time consuming and thus expensive to produce it manually for large urban areas. The algorithm requires some initial calibration input and is able to compute the above-mentioned building characteristics from the stereo pair and the availability of the 2D CAD and the digital elevation model of the same area, with no knowledge of the camera pose or its intrinsic parameters. To achieve this, we have used epipolar geometry, homography computation, automatic feature extraction and we have solved the feature correspondence problem in the stereo pair, by using template matching.     Activity-dependent regulation of synaptic size in Drosophila neuromuscular junctions

    Abstract One of the fundamental questions in neural development is how neurons form synapses of the appropriate size for the efficient transfer of information across neural circuits. Here we investigated the mechanisms that bring about the size correlation between synapses and postsynaptic cells during development of Drosophila neuromuscular junctions (NMJs). To do this, we made use of a unique system in which two neighboring muscles (M6 and M7) are innervated by the same neurons. In mature NMJs, synaptic size on M6 is normally larger than that on M7, in accordance with the difference in muscle volume; this ensures the same extent of contraction of both muscles, and we refer to this correspondence as "matching". We found that matching was apparent in larvae 8 h after hatching, but not in newly hatched larvae despite the difference in muscle volume. When sensory inputs were suppressed by the expression of tetanus toxin in sensory neurons, matching did not occur, although synapses were able to grow. Matching was also suppressed by the inhibition of motoneuronal activity. These results suggest that matching is induced by regulating the rate of synaptic growth on M6 and M7 in an experience- and activity-dependent manner. It seems most likely that retrograde signals from the postsynaptic to the presynaptic cell convey the information about muscle cell size. We thus examined whether a candidate of retrograde signaling in NMJs, BMP signaling, is involved inmatching. However, there was no effect on matching inBMP type II receptor gene mutants, suggesting thatother experience-driven mechanisms besides BMP signaling are involved in the proper development of synapses. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     Effects of vegetation on channel morphodynamics: results and insights from laboratory experiments

    Abstract A series of laboratory experiments demonstrates that riparian vegetation can cause a braided channel to self-organize to, and maintain, a dynamic, single-thread channel. The initial condition for the experiments was steady-state braiding in non-cohesive sand under uniform discharge. From here, an experiment consisted of repeated cycles alternating a short duration high flow with a long duration low flow, and uniform dispersal of alfalfa seeds over the bed at the end of each high flow. Plants established on freshly deposited bars and areas of braidplain that were unoccupied during low flow. The presence of the plants had the effect of progressively focusing the high flow so that a single dominant channel developed. The single-thread channel self-adjusted to carry the high flow. Vegetation also slowed the rate of bank erosion. Matching of deposition along the point bar with erosion along the outer bend enabled the channel to develop sinuosity and migrate laterally while suppressing channel splitting and the creation of new channel width. The experimental channels spontaneously reproduced many of the mechanisms by which natural meandering channels migrate and maintain a single dominant channel, in particular bend growth and channel cutoff. In contrast with the braided system, where channel switching is a nearly continuous process, vegetation maintained a coherent channel until wholesale diversion of flow via cutoff and/or avulsion occurred, by which point the previous channel tended to be highly unfavorable for flow. Thus vegetation discouraged the coexistence of multiple channels. Varying discharge was key to allowing expression of feedbacks between the plants and the flow and promoting the transition from braiding to a single-thread channel that was then dynamically maintained.     Directed Matching and Monetary Exchange

    We develop a model of monetary exchange where, as in the random matching literature, agents trade bilaterally and not through centralized markets. Rather than assuming they match exogenously and at random, however, we determine who meets whom as part of the equilibrium. We show how to formalize this process of directed matching in dynamic models with double coincidence problems, and present several examples and applications that illustrate how the approach can be used in monetary theory. Some of our results are similar to those in the random matching literature; others differ significantly. [source]


    Preparative capillary zone electrophoresis using a dynamic coated wide-bore capillary

    Abstract Preparative capillary zone electrophoresis separations of cytochrome,c from bovine and horse heart are performed efficiently in a surfactant-coated capillary. The surfactant, dimethylditetradecylammonium bromide (2C14DAB), effectively eliminated protein adsorption from the capillary surface, such that symmetrical peaks with efficiencies of 0.7,million plates/m were observed in 50-µm,id capillaries when low concentrations of protein were injected. At protein concentrations greater than 1,g/L, electromigration dispersion became the dominant source of band broadening and the peak shape distorted to triangular fronting. Matching of the mobility of the buffer co-ion to that of the cytochrome,c resulted in dramatic improvements in the efficiency and peak shape. Using 100,mM bis(2-hydroxyethyl)imino-tris(hydroxymethyl)methane phosphate buffer at pH,7.0 with a 100-µm,id capillary, the maximum sample loading capacity in a single run was 160,pmol (2.0,µg) of each protein.     Display Plasticity in Response to a Robotic Lizard: Signal Matching or Song Sharing in Lizards?

    Many territorial songbirds alter the structure of their songs after listening to and interacting repeatedly with the same neighbors. Here, we use a robotic lizard to test for similar learned changes in signal structure in male Sagebrush lizards, Sceloporus graciosus. Subjects were exposed to two types of headbob displays (species-typical and unusual) both in short-term tests and in repeated exposures for 10 d. We found no evidence for immediate changes in signal structure to match a particular opponent (signal matching) or long-term changes after repeated exposure (,song' sharing). If anything, the lizards' displays became less like that of the robotic stimulus over time. Further tests of other taxa are needed to identify the evolutionary forces that lead to these forms of behavioral plasticity and to determine whether song sharing and signal matching are unique characteristic of songbirds. Lizards also became more agitated and produced more highly aggressive displays of their own when confronted with headbob displays that violated the basic syntactic structure of their display system, confirming that they were paying attention to subtle differences in display structure despite the artificial nature of the treatments. Thus, our study also adds to the growing evidence supporting the use of robotic playbacks to study animal communication. [source]


    HABITAT-DEPENDENT SONG DIVERGENCE IN THE LITTLE GREENBUL: AN ANALYSIS OF ENVIRONMENTAL SELECTION PRESSURES ON ACOUSTIC SIGNALS

    Abstract., Bird song is a sexual trait important in mate choice and known to be shaped by environmental selection. Here we investigate the ecological factors shaping song variation across a rainforest gradient in central Africa. We show that the little greenbul (Andropadus virens), previously shown to vary morphologically across the gradient in fitness-related characters, also varies with respect to song characteristics. Acoustic features, including minimum and maximum frequency, and delivery rate of song notes showed significant differences between habitats. In contrast, we found dialectal variation independent of habitat in population-typical songtype sequences. This pattern is consistent with ongoing gene flow across habitats and in line with the view that song variation in the order in which songtypes are produced is not dependent on habitat characteristics in the same way physical song characteristics are. Sound transmission characteristics of the two habitats did not vary significantly, but analyses of ambient noise spectra revealed dramatic and consistent habitat-dependent differences. Matching between low ambient noise levels for low frequencies in the rainforest and lower minimal frequencies in greenbul songs in this habitat suggests that part of the song divergence may be driven by habitat-dependent ambient noise patterns. These results suggest that habitat-dependent selection may act simultaneously on traits of ecological importance and those important in prezygotic isolation, leading to an association between morphological and acoustic divergence. Such an association may promote assortative mating and may be a mechanism driving reproductive divergence across ecological gradients. [source]


    Measuring Similarity Among Various Shapes Based on Geometric Matching

    The purpose of this article is to examine how to measure the degree of similarity among various shapes, including for the first time those that are fragmented and perforated, by the overlap-based elongation index. It is argued that complete removal of the effects of position, size, and orientation on shape, which is essential for the calibration of shape similarity, can be achieved by a shape similarity index that varies continuously with changes in shape. After examining the characteristics of shape change, it is demonstrated that the elongation index is sensitive to changes in the shape of two spatial objects only when the centroids of the two objects are coincident. Two related rules of shape similarity are then presented. The applicability of the elongation index is evaluated by comparing several simple and complex shapes. The principal contribution of this article is that for the first time similarity among various shapes, fragmented or perforated, can be identified using the elongation index. [source]


    Hexahedral Mesh Matching: Converting non-conforming hexahedral-to-hexahedral interfaces into conforming interfaces

    Abstract This paper presents a new method, called Mesh Matching, for handling non-conforming hexahedral-to-hexahedral interfaces for finite element analysis. Mesh Matching modifies the hexahedral element topology on one or both sides of the interface until there is a one-to-one pairing of finite element nodes, edges and quadrilaterals on the interface surfaces, allowing mesh entities to be merged into a single conforming mesh. Element topology is modified using hexahedral dual operations, including pillowing, sheet extraction, dicing and column collapsing. The primary motivation for this research is to simplify the generation of unstructured all-hexahedral finite element meshes. Mesh Matching relaxes global constraint propagation which currently hinders hexahedral meshing of large assemblies, and limits its extension to parallel processing. As a secondary benefit, by providing conforming mesh interfaces, Mesh Matching provides an alternative to artificial constraints such as tied contacts and multi-point constraints.     Cognitive dysfunction and health-related quality of life after a cardiac arrest and therapeutic hypothermia

    Background: Evidence-based treatment protocols including therapeutic hypothermia have increased hospital survival to over 50% in unconscious out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors. In this study we estimated the incidence of cognitive dysfunctions in a group of cardiac arrest survivors with a high functional outcome treated with therapeutic hypothermia. Secondarily, we assessed the cardiac arrest group's level of cognitive performance in each tested cognitive domain and investigated the relationship between cognitive function and age, time since cardiac arrest and health-related quality of life (HRQOL). Methods: We included 26 patients 13,28 months after a cardiac arrest. All patients were scored using the Cerebral Performance Category scale (CPC) and Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Twenty-five of the patients were tested for cognitive function using the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB). These patients were tested using four cognitive tests: Motor Screening Test, Delayed Matching to Sample, Stockings of Cambridge and Paired Associate Learning from CANTAB. All patients filled in the Short Form-36 for the assessment of HRQOL. Results: Thirteen of 25 (52%) patients were classified as having a cognitive dysfunction. Compared with the reference population, there was no difference in the performance in motor function and delayed memory but there were significant differences in executive function and episodic memory. We found no associations between cognitive function and age, time since cardiac arrest or HRQOL. Conclusion: Half of the patients had a cognitive dysfunction with reduced performance on executive function and episodic memory, indicating frontal and temporal lobe affection, respectively. Reduced performance did not affect HRQOL. [source]


    Matching of uncalibrated stereo images by elastic deformation

    Abstract We propose a method for uncalibrated stereo matching. The method applies gradual elastic deformation to the line segments in a pair of images until they match with each other. By using an energy function and a neighborhood function, matching is performed in a coarse-to-fine manner. Our method gives point correspondences with a low proportion of outliers and is robust in the uncalibrated case (with no need to estimate the epipolar geometry). The computation complexity is proportional to the square of the number of line segments in the images, which is relatively efficient compared with other elaborate methods. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.     Match Madness: Probability Matching in Prediction of the NCAA Basketball Tournament,

    Every year, billions of dollars are spent gambling on the outcomes of the NCAA men's basketball tournament. This study examines how individuals make predictions for tournament pools, one of the most popular forms of betting, in which individuals must correctly predict as many games in the tournament as possible. We demonstrate that individuals predict more upsets (i.e., wins by a higher seeded team) than would be considered rational by a normative choice model, and that individuals are no better than chance at doing so. These predictions fit a pattern of probability matching, in which individuals predict upsets at a rate equal to past frequency. This pattern emerges because individuals believe the outcomes of the games are nonrandom and, therefore, predictable. [source]


    Relationship of Specific Electrogram Characteristics During Sinus Rhythm and Ventricular Pacing Determined by Adaptive Template Matching to the Location of Functional Reentrant Circuits that Cause Ventricular Tachycardia in the Infarcted Canine Heart

    Localization of Reentrant Circuits. Introduction: It would be advantageous, for ablation therapy, to localize reentrant circuits causing ventricular tachycardia by quantifying electrograms obtained during sinus rhythm (SR) or ventricular pacing (VP). In this study, adaptive template matching (ATM) was used to localize reentrant circuits by measuring dynamic electrogram shape using SR and VP data. Methods and Results: Four days after coronary occlusion, reentrant ventricular tachycardia was induced in the epicardial border zone of canine hearts by programmed electrical stimulation. Activation maps of circuits were constructed using electrograms recorded from a multichannel array to ascertain block line location. Electrogram recordings obtained during SR/AP then were used for ATM analysis. A template electrogram was matched with electrograms on subsequent cycles by weighting amplitude, vertical shift, duration, and phase lag for optimal overlap. Sites of largest cycle-to-cycle variance in the optimal ATM weights were found to be adjacent to block lines bounding the central isthmus during reentry (mean 61.1% during SR; 63.9% during VP). The distance between the mean center of mass of the ten highest ATM variance peaks and the narrowest isthmus width was determined. For all VP data, the center of mass resided in the isthmus region ocurring during reentry. Conclusion: ATM high variance measured from SR/AP data localizes functional block lines forming during reentry. The center of mass of the high variance peaks localizes the narrowest width of the isthmus. Therefore, ATM methodology may guide ablation catheter position without resorting to reentry induction.     Prescribed medications and pharmacy interventions for acute respiratory tract infections in Swiss primary care

    Summary Background and objectives:, Symptomatic medications are often not considered in clinical studies assessing interventions to reduce prescribing of antibiotics for acute respiratory tract infections (ARTI). Our study objectives were to examine prescribing patterns of antibiotics and symptomatic medications for ARTI in Swiss primary care and to monitor pharmacists' interventions during the prescription-dispensing process. Methods:, Medical records of 695 patients participating in a clinical trial which was designed to reduce use of antibiotics for ARTI in primary care, were linked to their prescriptions. Matching of prescribed and dispensed medications enabled the assessment of interventions by community pharmacists. Results:, On average, 2·4 different drugs were prescribed per patient (in total 142 antibiotics, 1599 symptomatic medications, and 56 non-ARTI-medication). Most patients (80%) were treated only with symptomatic medications. Most frequently prescribed symptomatic ARTI-medications were nasal decongestants (39%), cough suppressants (36%), and mucolytics (31%). Patients with prescribed antibiotics received significantly fewer symptomatic medications (odds ratio, 0·24; 95% confidence interval 0·16,0·37). Over 20% of prescriptions prompted at least one intervention by a pharmacist in the dispensing process. A discrepancy between prescribed and dispensed medications was seen in 19% of patients. Conclusions:, Prescription rates of antibiotics for ARTI in this trial were low and patients were treated mainly with non-antibiotic symptomatic medications. Efforts to reduce antibiotic prescribing may induce higher rates of use of medications for intensive symptomatic treatment. Considerable differences between prescribed and dispensed medications were noted. [source]


    An Economist's Perspective on Probability Matching

    The experimental phenomenon known as ,probability matching' is often offered as evidence in support of adaptive learning models and against the idea that people maximise their expected utility. Recent interest in dynamic-based equilibrium theories means the term re-appears in Economics. However, there seems to be conflicting views on what is actually meant by the term and about the validity of the data. The purpose of this paper is therefore threefold: First, to introduce today's readers to what is meant by probability matching, and in particular to clarify which aspects of this phenomenon challenge the utility-maximisation hypothesis. Second, to familiarise the reader with the different theoretical approaches to behaviour in such circumstances, and to focus on the differences in predictions between these theories in light of recent advances.     Accuracy of Very Low Pretest Probability Estimates for Pulmonary Embolism Using the Method of Attribute Matching Compared with the Wells Score

    Abstract Objectives:, Attribute matching matches an explicit clinical profile of a patient to a reference database to estimate the numeric value for the pretest probability of an acute disease. The authors tested the accuracy of this method for forecasting a very low probability of venous thromboembolism (VTE) in symptomatic emergency department (ED) patients. Methods:, The authors performed a secondary analysis of five data sets from 15 hospitals in three countries. All patients had data collected at the time of clinical evaluation for suspected pulmonary embolism (PE). The criterion standard to exclude VTE required no evidence of PE or deep venous thrombosis (DVT) within 45 days of enrollment. To estimate pretest probabilities, a computer program selected, from a large reference database of patients previously evaluated for PE, patients who matched 10 predictor variables recorded for each current test patient. The authors compared the outcome frequency of having VTE [VTE(+)] in patients with a pretest probability estimate of <2.5% by attribute matching, compared with a value of 0 from the Wells score. Results:, The five data sets included 10,734 patients, and 747 (7.0%, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 6.5% to 7.5%) were VTE(+) within 45 days. The pretest probability estimate for PE was <2.5% in 2,975 of 10,734 (27.7%) patients, and within this subset, the observed frequency of VTE(+) was 48 of 2,975 (1.6%, 95% CI = 1.2% to 2.1%). The lowest possible Wells score (0) was observed in 3,412 (31.7%) patients, and within this subset, the observed frequency of VTE(+) was 79 of 3,412 (2.3%, 95% CI = 1.8% to 2.9%) patients. Conclusions:, Attribute matching categorizes over one-quarter of patients tested for PE as having a pretest probability of <2.5%, and the observed rate of VTE within 45 days in this subset was <2.5%.     Body Weight and Matching With a Physically Attractive Romantic Partner

    Matching and attribute trade are two perspectives used to explain mate selection. We investigated patterns of matching and trade, focusing on obesity, using Add Health Romantic Pair data (N = 1,405 couples). Obese individuals, relative to healthy weight individuals, were less likely to have physically attractive partners, with this disadvantage greater for women than men, and greater for White women than Black women. Additional education, a more attractive personality, and better grooming increased the probability of having a physically attractive partner and offset the disadvantage of obesity for some individuals. Unexpectedly, we found women, like men, trade education for their partners' physical attractiveness. Despite evidence of attribute trade, matching with respect to physical characteristics was the dominant mate selection pattern. [source]


    The Role of Ethnic Matching Between Patient and Provider on the Effectiveness of Brief Alcohol Interventions With Hispanics

    Background:, Evaluating the effectiveness of treatments such as brief alcohol interventions among Hispanics is essential to effectively addressing their treatment needs. Clinicians of the same ethnicity as the client may be more likely to understand the culture-specific values, norms, and attitudes and, therefore, the intervention may be more effective. Thus, in cases in which Hispanic patients were provided intervention by a Hispanic clinician improved drinking outcomes were expected. Methods:, Patients were recruited from an urban Level I Trauma following screening for an alcohol-related injury or alcohol problems. Five hundred thirty-seven Hispanics were randomly assigned to brief intervention or treatment as usual. Hierarchical linear modeling was used to determine the effects of ethnic match on drinking outcomes including volume per week, maximum amount, and frequency of 5 or more drinks per occasion. Analyses controlled for level of acculturation and immigration status. Results:, For Hispanics who received brief motivational intervention, an ethnic match between patient and provider resulted in a significant reduction in drinking outcomes at 12-month follow-up. In addition, there was a tendency for ethnic match to be most beneficial to foreign-born Hispanics and less acculturated Hispanics. Conclusion:, As hypothesized, an ethnic match between patient and provider significantly enhanced the effectiveness of brief intervention among Hispanics. Ethnic concordance between patient and provider may have impacted the effectiveness of the intervention through several mechanisms including cultural scripts, ethnic-specific perceptions pertaining to substance abuse, and ethnic-specific preferred channels of communication.     Abstract Single planar element designs working at frequencies around 122 GHz are presented. The structures are designed keeping in mind future commercial applications that might arise in mm-wave bands. Therefore, structures are explored with different radiation patterns. This antenna is made of capacitively loaded shorted patches, a slot, and an efficient antenna-chassis combination to achieve multiband and wideband performances to operate in the 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz, 1900 MHz, and UMTS bands.     Matching of catalogues by probabilistic pattern classification

    ABSTRACT We consider the statistical problem of catalogue matching from a machine learning perspective with the goal of producing probabilistic outputs, and using all available information. A framework is provided that unifies two existing approaches to producing probabilistic outputs in the literature, one based on combining distribution estimates and the other based on combining probabilistic classifiers. We apply both of these to the problem of matching the H i Parkes All Sky Survey radio catalogue with large positional uncertainties to the much denser SuperCOSMOS catalogue with much smaller positional uncertainties. We demonstrate the utility of probabilistic outputs by a controllable completeness and efficiency trade-off and by identifying objects that have high probability of being rare. Finally, possible biasing effects in the output of these classifiers are also highlighted and discussed. [source]


    Matching and ideal free distributions

    Ideal free distributions characterise how a group of animals should be distributed between sources of food. In a simple case, the ratio of the number of animals matches the ratio of input rates, a result known as input matching. The matching law characterises how an animal should allocate responses to sources of food. If matching holds then the ratio of behaviour allocated to the sources matches the ratio of rewards obtained. Several authors have drawn attention to the analogy between input matching and the matching law. I present a critical review of this topic, and go on to investigate the claim that the distribution of animals should be analyzed in the same way that the generalized matching law is analyzed. This involves assuming that the relationship between the ratio of animals and the ratio of resources obeys a power law with two parameters, one corresponding to bias and the other to sensitivity. On this view, a plot of the log of the ratio of animals against the log of the ratio of input rates will be a straight line and its intercept and slope will provide estimates of bias and sensitivity. I show that this approach can give a good fit even when the underlying model does not result in a power law. A consequence is that the parameters estimated cannot be interpreted as bias and sensitivity. I conclude that there are no compelling reasons for analyzing the distribution of animals using log-log plots, and the method has the disadvantage of encouraging the mistaken view that deviations from input matching follow a power law.     Design and validation of an interpretative strategy for cardiopulmonary exercise tests

    Background and objective: Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a common investigation for the evaluation of exertional dyspnoea. At present, there is no consensus on the best interpretative strategy and none of the available algorithms have been validated. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a standardized strategy for the interpretation of CPET. Methods: This study analysed 199 CPETs from patients with exertional dyspnoea. Using a set of 100 CPETs a standardized interpretation using a four-step approach was developed that scored: examination quality, performance, exercise limitation and cofactors. A second set of 99 CPETs was interpreted by two experts in the field, initially independently and then in a consensus conference. The standardized interpretation was compared with each expert, the expert's consensus and the original clinical reports. Results: Matching between the standardized interpretation strategy and the expert consensus was 82%, 82% with one expert and 86% with a second expert and 64% with the original clinical reports. From one to four exercise-relevant cofactors were found in 77% of the patients. Conclusion: The standardized interpretation showed a precision comparable to the opinion of a single expert and significantly improved the consistency in CPET reports in a pulmonary centre with different physicians and varying degrees of expertise.     Acute neuropsychological effects of methylphenidate in stimulant drug-naïve boys with ADHD II , broader executive and non-executive domains

    Background:, Accumulating evidence supports methylphenidate-induced enhancement of neuropsychological functioning in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The present study was designed to investigate the acute effects of the psychostimulant drug, methylphenidate (MPH), on neuropsychological performance in stimulant naïve boys with ADHD. Methods:, Seventy-three drug-naïve boys (age 7,15) with ADHD (combined type) completed neuropsychological tasks from the CANTAB battery under randomised, placebo controlled, double-blind conditions following an acute challenge with either placebo (n = 24), .3 (n = 25) or .6 (n = 24) mg/kg oral MPH. Results:, MPH did not impair performance on any task. MPH (.6 mg/kg) lengthened response latencies on a task of Spatial Recognition, shortened response times on a Reaction Time task and restored performance on a Delayed Matching to Sample visual, non-working memory task. Contrary to predictions, MPH did not enhance performance on tasks with a prominent executive component, including Go/NoGo, Spatial Working Memory, Stockings of Cambridge and Attentional Set shifting tasks. Conclusions:, Acute administration of MPH to drug-naïve boys with ADHD did not impair neuropsychological performance. Acute MPH enhanced performance on some aspects of non-executive functioning. MPH-induced slowing of responding on a relatively complex Spatial Recognition memory task and quickened responding on a reaction time task requiring less cognitive resources suggests that MPH may act by improving self-regulatory ability. MPH may not exert its effects on neuropsychological functioning by enhancing executive processes. [source]
