The establishment of an urban bird population

Summary 1Despite the accelerating global spread of urbanized habitats and its associated implications for wildlife and humans, surprisingly little is known about the biology of urban ecosystems. 2Using data from a 60-year study period, this paper provides a detailed description of how the northern goshawk Accipiter gentilis L. , generally considered a shy forest species , colonized the city of Hamburg, Germany. Six non-mutually exclusive hypotheses are investigated regarding the environmental factors that may have triggered this invasion. 3The spatio-temporal analysis of 2556 goshawk chance observations (extracted from a total data set of 1 174 493 bird observations; 1946,2003) showed that hawks regularly visited the city centre decades before the first successful breeding attempts were recorded. Many observations were made in parts of the city where territories were established in later years, demonstrating that these early visitors had encountered, but not used, potential nest sites. 4Pioneer settlement coincided with: (i) an increase in (legal) hunting pressure on goshawks in nearby rural areas; (ii) an increase in avian prey abundance in the city; and (iii) a succession of severe winters in the Greater Hamburg area. On the other hand, there was no evidence to suggest that the early stages of the invasion were due to: (i) decreasing food availability in rural areas; (ii) major habitat changes in the city; or (iii) rural intraguild dynamics forcing hawks into urban refugia. While breeding numbers of a potential rural source population were at a long-term low when the city was colonized, prior to first settlement there was a sharp increase of goshawk chance observations in the city and its rural periphery. 5The urban population expanded rapidly, and pair numbers began to stabilize after about 10 years. Ringing data (219 ringed nestlings from 70 urban broods; 1996,2000) demonstrated that most urban recruits had fledged in the city, but also confirmed considerable gene flow between urban and rural habitats. Analysis of chance observations (as raw data or as detrended time series) suggested a tight coupling of population dynamics inside and outside the city. 6City-colonizations such as the one described here provide a valuable opportunity to study some fundamental aspects of population ecology on a scale at which detailed monitoring is logistically feasible. Furthermore, a good understanding of urban ecology has become essential for efficient wildlife conservation in modern, human-altered environments. [source]


Full-length bovine spp24 [spp24 (24-203)] inhibits BMP-2 induced bone formation,

Abstract Secreted phosphoprotein 24 kDa (spp24) is a bone matrix protein. It contains a TGF-, receptor II homology 1 (TRH1) domain. A cyclic, synthetic 19 amino acid peptide (bone morphogenetic protein binding peptide or BBP) based on the sequence of the TRH1 domain enhances BMP-2 induced osteogenesis. Many observations suggest that different size forms of this protein have very different effects (inhibiting or enhancing) on BMP-2 induced osteogenesis. Using the stable recombinant Met(His)6 -tagged secretory form of full-length (fl) bovine spp24 [Met(His)6 -spp24 (residues 24,203)] and transgenic (TG) mice expressing fl bovine spp24 (residues 1,203), we have demonstrated that spp24 inhibits BMP-2 induced bone formation. The effects of Met(His)6 -spp24 (24,203) were determined in the ectopic bone-forming bioassay in male mice. Implantation of 5 µg of BMP-2 stimulated bone formation, assessed densitometrically as bone area and mineral content. When Met(His)6 -spp24 (24,203) was implanted with BMP-2, it elicited a dose-dependent decrease in BMP-2-medicated ectopic bone formation. When added at a 50-fold excess (w/w), Met(His)6 -spp24 (24,203) completely ablated the effects of BMP-2, while addition of a 10-fold excess had no effect. Constitutive expression of fl bovine spp24 (1,203) under the control of the osteocalcin promoter in TG female mice reduced femoral and vertebral bone mineral density at 3 months of age and reduced femoral BMD at 8 months of age, but had no effects in male mice, which can exhibit less osteocalcin-promoter driven gene transcription than females. Histomorphometric analysis demonstrated that bone volume and trabecular thickness were lower in TG female mice at 3 months of age than in sex- and age-matched wild type (WT) controls. Thus, fl spp24 and its secretory isoform (Met(His)6 -spp24 [24,203]), which contain a BMP-binding or TRH1 motif, inhibit ectopic bone formation in male mice and adversely affects BMD and histological parameters related to bone mass and formation in female mice expressing the human transgene. Detailed comparison of the structures and kinematics of simulated and observed barred galaxies

ABSTRACT We examine the observable properties of simulated barred galaxies, including radial mass profiles, edge-on structure and kinematics, bar lengths and pattern speed evolution for detailed comparison to real systems. We have run several simulations in which bars are created through inherent instabilities in self-consistent simulations of a realistic disc+halo galaxy model with a disc-dominated, flat rotation curve. These simulations were run at high (N= 20 million particles) and low (N= 500 000 particles) resolution to test numerical convergence. We determine the pattern speeds in simulations directly from the phase angle of the bar versus time and the Tremaine,Weinberg method. Fundamental dynamics do not change between the high and low resolution, suggesting that convergence has been reached in this case. We find that the higher resolution is needed to simulate structural and kinematic properties accurately. The edge-on view of the higher-resolution system shows the bending instability and formation of a peanut-shaped bulge clearly. We determined bar lengths by different means to determine that the simulated bar is fast, with a corotation to bar length ratio of under 1.5. Simulated bars in these models form with pattern speeds slower than those observed and slow-down during their evolution. Dynamical friction between the bar and dark halo is responsible for this deceleration, as revealed by the transfer of angular momentum between the disc and the halo. However, even though the pattern speed is reduced at later times, the instantaneous scalelength of the disc has grown sufficiently for the bar motion to agree with many observations. By using a different model and simulation technique than other authors, we are able to compare the robustness of these methods. Gödelian time-travel and anthropic cosmology

This paper looks at Kurt Gödel's causally-pathological cosmological models (derived from general relativity), in the light of anthropic explanations. If a Gödelian world is a possible world, could anthropic reasoning shed any light on whether or not our world is Gödelian? This paper argues that while there are some good anthropic reasons why our world ought to be Gödelian, too many observations suggest that our world can't possibly be Gödelian in fact. If Gödel's world is a possible one, anthropic teleology alone cannot explain why it isn't the world we inhabit. Furthermore, if our world were Gödelian, anthropic arguments against the existence of extraterrestrial intelligences would imply a bleak human future. En route, some general objections to relativistic causal pathologies are addressed and some anthropic arguments to the effect that Gödelian worlds couldn't sustain life are also addressed and dismissed.
