Test anxiety, evaluative stress, and susceptibility to distraction from threat

Examinations are perhaps one of the main methods of assessment in education. Unfortunately, there are some individuals who are so fearful of such events that performance is impaired. Test anxiety is believed to be the trait that predisposes individuals to react negatively to examinations and tests. One way in which it is believed that test anxiety affects performance is by increasing susceptibility to distraction from task-irrelevant material. However, few studies have directly investigated this impairment. An experiment was therefore conducted to investigate susceptibility to distraction in high and low test-anxious students. The task used was based on one developed by Mathews, May, Mogg and Eysenck (1990), which distinguishes between focused attention and selective search. In order to determine whether a specific susceptibility to distraction exists, the distractors were varied in terms of valence and relevance to examinations. Since test anxiety is a situation-specific trait, an evaluation-related stressor was used to trigger test-anxious reactions. A specific susceptibility to distraction from threat was found amongst high test-anxious participants who received the evaluation-related stressor. However, this effect was only found when participants were using focused attention. This suggests that the disturbed performance often found to be associated with test anxiety might be due to an inability to ignore threatening material when attempting to focus attentional resources. The challenge of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction

Summary Background/introduction:, Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) represent a spectrum of ischaemic myocardial events that share a similar pathophysiology. ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), the most severe form of ACS short of sudden cardiac death, is a significant public health problem with an estimated 500,000 STEMI events every year in the United States. Treatment/therapy:, The mortality and morbidity associated with STEMI is significant. Early reperfusion therapy is the most important aspect of the treatment of STEMI. There are two main methods of reperfusion therapy: percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and fibrinolytic therapy, with PCI being the preferred method. In addition to standard reperfusion therapy, antithrombotics (unfractionated heparin and low molecular weight heparins) and antiplatelet agents (aspirin, clopidogrel and glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors) are critical adjuncts, effective in the treatment of acute STEMI. Conclusions:, The survival of patients with STEMI depends on rapid diagnosis and optimal early treatment. Guidelines for the management of patients with STEMI recommend PCI within 90 min of presentation and that fibrinolytics are administered within 30 min. However, only a fraction of patients undergo reperfusion within the recommended time. Improvements in protocols for identifying STEMI cases are therefore required to allow reperfusion therapy to be initiated sooner. Secondary prevention is another important aspect of STEMI management, and patients should be encouraged to adopt strategies that reduce the risk of subsequent ischaemic events. [source]


An overview of methods for determining OWA weights

The ordered weighted aggregation (OWA) operator has received more and more attention since its appearance. One key point in the OWA operator is to determine its associated weights. In this article, I first briefly review existing main methods for determining the weights associated with the OWA operator, and then, motivated by the idea of normal distribution, I develop a novel practical method for obtaining the OWA weights, which is distinctly different from the existing ones. The method can relieve the influence of unfair arguments on the decision results by weighting these arguments with small values. The use of simulation and post-simulation interview to examine the knowledge involved in community nursing assessment practice This paper describes the development of an innovative research approach which used the complementary methods of simulation and post-simulation interview to examine the knowledge-base involved in community nursing assessment practice in the United Kingdom. The study commenced in 1994 and the main phase of data-gathering took place over a 3-week period in 1995. Having outlined the study's aim, context and theoretical background, this paper focuses on the two main methods of data-gathering used. Detailed description of the simulation method and the post-simulation interview and the rationales for their use are followed by critical discussion which identifies their particular strengths and weaknesses. Threats to validity are also considered. It is argued that the combined use of a simulated assessment and a post-simulation structured interview has great potential as a means of exploring the knowledge involved in community nursing assessment practice. Hydrolytic degradation of poly(ethylene terephthalate)

Abstract Molecular weight is an important factor in the processing of polymer materials, and it should be well controlled to obtain desired physical properties in final products for end-use applications. Degradation processes of all kinds, including hydrolytic, thermal, and oxidative degradations, cause chain scission in macromolecules and a reduction in molecular weight. The main purpose of this research is to illustrate the importance of degradation in the drying of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) before processing and the loss of weight and mechanical properties in textile materials during washing. Several techniques were used to investigate the hydrolytic degradation of PET and its effect on changes in molecular weight. Hydrolytic conditions were used to expose fiber-grade PET chips in water at 85°C for different periods of time. Solution viscometry and end-group analysis were used as the main methods for determining the extent of degradation. The experimental results show that PET is susceptible to hydrolysis. Also, we that as the time of retention in hydrolytic condition increased, the molecular weight decreases, but the rate of chain cleavage decreased to some extent, at which point there was no more sensible degradation. The obtained moisture content data confirmed the end-group analysis and viscometry results. Predictive analytical relationships for the estimation of the extent of degradation based on solution viscosity and end-group analysis are presented. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract After a short history of the concept of human capital (henceforth HC) in economic thought (Section 1), this study presents the two main methods for estimating the value of the stock of HC , the retrospective and prospective one , with a review of the models proposed (Section 2). These methods are linked both to the theory of HC investment as a rational choice (Section 3), the literature analysing the contribution of HC investment to economic growth and the HC estimating method through educational attainment (Section 4). The more recent literature on HC as a latent variable is also assessed (Section 5) and a new method of estimation where HC is seen both as an unknown function of formative indicators and as a ,latent effect' underlying earned income is proposed (Section 6). Cryotherapy after total knee replacement: a survey of current practice

Abstract Background and Purpose Cryotherapy is commonly used during physio-therapeutic rehabilitation after total knee replacement (TKR). Evidence for treatment effectiveness is contradictory and there are no clinical guidelines to inform treatment protocols within this patient group. The present survey investigated current cryotherapy practice after TKR throughout the United Kingdom (UK). Method A postal survey, containing open and closed questions, was distributed to senior inpatient orthopaedic physiotherapists (n = 453). Results The response rate was 67% (304/453) and 58% (263/453) of the responses were completed by physiotherapists who treated TKR patients in the acute phase. Of these, 33% (85/263) routinely applied some form of cryotherapy after TKR. Physiotherapists working in the private sector were more likely to use cryotherapy and had greater access to Cryocuff equipment. The two main methods of cryotherapy application were the Cryocuff device, 59% (155/263) and crushed ice, 30% (79/263). Treatments were applied most frequently between 24 and 48 hours post-surgery, for 20 minutes, twice a day. Lack of proven efficacy was the most frequently stated reason for not applying cryotherapy treatment, and swelling was the most common indicator for treatment. There was particular uncertainty about the physical management of the Cryocuff device. Conclusions There was little consensus with regard to treatment indicators, method of application and the management of cryotherapy after TKR. The results highlight a lack of consistency in the application of cryotherapy after TKR, indicating a need for further research. Copyright © 2003 Whurr Publishers Ltd. [source]

Abstract The increasing popularity of gel-free proteomics technologies has created a strong demand for compatible quantitative analysis methods. As a result, a plethora of different techniques has been proposed to perform gel-free quantitative analysis of proteomics samples. Each of these methods comes with certain strengths and shortcomings, and they often are dedicated to a specific purpose. This review will present a brief overview of the main methods, organized by their underlying concepts, and will discuss the issues they raise with a focus on data processing. Finally, we will list the available software that can help with the data processing from quantitative experiments. We hope that this review will thus enable researchers to find the most appropriate method available for their research objectives, and can also serve as a basis for creating a reliable data processing strategy. Climate Change and Pastoral Economy in Kenya: A Blinking Future

Abstract: The present paper examines the changing climatic scenarios and associated effects on livestock farming (pastoralism) in the arid and semi arid lands (ASAL) of Kenya, which cover over 80% of the country. The study was carried out in the semi arid Mukogodo Division of Laikipia District in Kenya. This division received a mean annual rainfall of approximately 507.8 mm and the main source of livelihood was pastoralism. Questionnaire, structured interview, observation and literature review were the main methods of data collection. Rainfall was used in delineating changes in climate. Standardized precipitation index (SPI) and Markov process were used in analyzing drought severity and persistence, respectively. Approximately 38% of all droughts between 1975 and 2005 were prolonged and extremely severe, with cumulative severity indices ranging between ,2.54 and ,6.49. The probability that normal climatic conditions persisted for two or more consecutive years in Mukogodo Division remained constant at approximately 52%. However, the probability of wet years persisting for two or more years showed a declining trend, while persistence of dry years increased with duration. A drying climatic trend was established. This drying trend in the area led to increased land degradation and encroachment of invasive nonpalatable bushes. The net effect on pastoralism was large-scale livestock loss through starvation, disease and cattle rustling. Proper drought monitoring and accurate forecasts, community participation in all government interventions, infrastructural development in the ASAL and allocation of adequate resources for livestock development are some of the measures necessary for mitigating the dwindling pastoral economy in Kenya and other parts of the world. Giant Vesicles: Preparations and Applications

Abstract There is considerable interest in preparing cell-sized giant unilamellar vesicles from natural or nonnatural amphiphiles because a giant vesicle membrane resembles the self-closed lipid matrix of the plasma membrane of all biological cells. Currently, giant vesicles are applied to investigate certain aspects of biomembranes. Examples include lateral lipid heterogeneities, membrane budding and fission, activities of reconstituted membrane proteins, or membrane permeabilization caused by added chemical compounds. One of the challenging applications of giant vesicles include gene expressions inside the vesicles with the ultimate goal of constructing a dynamic artificial cell-like system that is endowed with all those essential features of living cells that distinguish them from the nonliving form of matter. Although this goal still seems to be far away and currently difficult to reach, it is expected that progress in this and other fields of giant vesicle research strongly depend on whether reliable methods for the reproducible preparation of giant vesicles are available. The key concepts of currently known methods for preparing giant unilamellar vesicles are summarized, and advantages and disadvantages of the main methods are compared and critically discussed.
