Men And Family Planning: What Is Their Future Role?

JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF NURSE PRACTITIONERS, Issue 10 2001
FP-C, Lorraine Neeley Fortunati MSN
Purpose To describe men's desired involvement in family planning and to determine the services desired by potential male clients. Data Sources Using a self-administered questionnaire, this study surveyed male partners of family planning clients and men attending sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinics at an urban health department. Perceived health concerns, contraceptive attitudes and practices, and desired involvement in family planning currently and in the future were targeted. Conclusions Respondents reported desiring involvement in family planning decisions, although reported behaviors often conflicted with this desire. Routine physical examinations and receipt of health information were perceived to be important, while "male only" clinics were not. Respondents were willing to attend partners' family planning appointments if asked and were willing to help pay for the chosen contraceptive. Provision of vasectomy services was perceived as important. Prevention of cancer, STDs, and impotence were the three highest health concerns reported. Implications for Practice Men want to be partners in family planning and will access services if available. Current political and social policies are demanding more personal responsibility for the outcome of unintended pregnancies. In response to political and social demands, Title X family planning clinics are refocusing services to include men. [source]

INDUSTRIAL SHIFT, POLARIZED LABOR MARKETS AND URBAN VIOLENCE: MODELING THE DYNAMICS BETWEEN THE ECONOMIC TRANSFORMATION AND DISAGGREGATED HOMICIDE,

CRIMINOLOGY, Issue 3 2004
KAREN F. PARKER
Industrial restructuring marks the removal of a manufacturing and production-based economy in urban areas, which had served as a catalyst in concentrating disadvantage and polarizing labor markets since the 1970s. Although scholars have established a relationship between concentrated disadvantage , poverty, joblessness, racial residential segregation , and urban violence in cross-sectional studies, this literature has yet to estimate whether economic restructuring contributed to the change in urban homicide over time. Modeling this relationship requires an analytical strategy that incorporates specific indicators of (race and gender) polarized labor markets, separate from indicators of urban disadvantage, on disaggregated homicides while taking into account the growing dependency of urban cities on formal social control (via police presence and rise in incarceration). In this study I provide a theoretical rationale for linking industrial restructuring to urban homicide. Using a multivariate strategy to capture the shift in labor market forces and disaggregated homicides from 1980 to 1990, I also estimate the impact of this relationship. The results provide evidence of the industrial ship and documents both the decline in Manufacturing jobs for black males and black females and a growth in the service sector opportunities for white males only. I also find that industrial restructuring had a unique impact on disaggregated homicide beyond what has previously been established in cross-sectional studies. [source]

Welham J, Scott J, Williams GM, Najman JM, Bor W, O'Callaghan M, McGrath J. The antecedents of non-affective psychosis in a birth-cohort, with a focus on measures related to cognitive ability, attentional dysfunction, and speech problems. Objective:, Adults with non-affective psychosis show subtle deviations in a range of developmental trajectories as children and adolescents. Method:, Based on a birth-cohort (n = 3801), we examined the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPTV) at age 5, and Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices (RSPM) and Wide Range Achievement Test reading scale (WRAT-R) at age 14. Items related to speech problems and attentional dysfunction were available from maternal- or self-report. At age 21, we identified 60 cohort members who were screen-positive for non-affective psychosis (SP-NAP). Results:, Impaired performance on the PPVT and RSPM (but not WRAT-R) predicted SP-NAP for males only. Male cohort members in the highest quartile for attentional dysfunction at ages 5 and 14 were about 5,8 times more likely to develop SP-NAP. SP-NAP in males was significantly associated with speech problems at age 14. Conclusion:, Males who develop non-affective psychoses have subtle impairments in cognitive capacity prior to the development of their psychotic disorder. [source]

Localization of estrogen receptor-, and -,mRNA in brain areas controlling sexual behavior in Japanese quail

DEVELOPMENTAL NEUROBIOLOGY, Issue 2 2006
Krister Halldin
Abstract Two estrogen receptors (ERs), denoted ER, and ER,, have been identified in humans and various animal species, including the Japanese quail. Estrogens play a key role in sexual differentiation and in activation of sexual behavior in Japanese quail. The distribution of ER, in the brain of male and female adult quail has previously been studied using immunohistochemistry, whereas in situ hybridization has been employed to study the distribution of ER, mRNA in males only. In this article, we used in situ hybridization to study the distribution of mRNAs for both ER, and ER, in brain areas controlling sexual behavior of Japanese quail. Our results show that both ER, mRNA and ER, mRNA are localized in areas important for sexual behavior, such as the preoptic area and associated limbic areas, in both males and females. Moreover, we found differences in distribution of mRNA for the two receptors in these areas. The results of this article support previously reported data and provide novel data on localization of ER mRNAs in adult quail brain of both sexes. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Prognostic significance of secondary cytogenetic alterations in follicular lymphomas

GENES, CHROMOSOMES AND CANCER, Issue 12 2008
Nathalie A. Johnson
Follicular lymphoma (FL) is an indolent lymphoma with a long median survival. Transformation to a more aggressive histology (TLy) is a major cause of mortality. The critical events leading to TLy are unknown. We assessed the prognostic significance of secondary cytogenetic alterations on overall survival (OS) and transformation from 210 diagnostic FL biopsies. We analyzed serial and transformed karyotypes for recurrent alterations that predict transformation. Over 10 years, 31% of cases developed TLy. The only alteration in diagnostic karyotypes that correlated with an inferior OS was an additional X chromosome in males only (P = 0.005) suggesting that other mechanisms including epigenetic factors and over-expression of genes on the X chromosome may play a role in FL pathogenesis. In transformed karyotypes, 8q24 (MYC) translocations were common (14/37) and resulted in a median survival of 3 months posttransformation (P = 0.01). In serially obtained biopsies (28 pts), 43% of the later biopsies lacked the cytogenetic alterations found in the original FL karyotype, suggesting that karyotypic progression of FL is not strictly linear in all cases. Consequently, studying clonal evolution in FL using serial biopsies may not represent the full complexity of genetic alterations leading to transformation. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc. [source]

Direct and indirect bully-victims: differential psychosocial risk factors associated with adolescents involved in bullying and victimization

AGGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR, Issue 6 2006
Zopito A. Marini
Abstract The present study examined psychosocial risk factors that differentiated direct and indirect bully-victims from bullies, victims and uninvolved adolescents. A total of 7,290 (3,756 girls) students (ages 13,18,yr) from a region of Southern Ontario, Canada, completed a number of self-report measures to determine the relation between direct and indirect bullying and victimization and several psychosocial risk factors, including normative beliefs about antisocial acts, angry-externalizing coping, social anxiety, depression, self-esteem, temperament, attachment, parental monitoring and peer relational problems. ANCOVA and logistic regression analyses indicated that indirect bully-victims and victims were similar in demonstrating greater internalizing problems and peer relational problems than indirect bullies and uninvolved participants. Furthermore, adolescents involved in indirect bullying (bullies, bully-victims) reported a higher level of normative beliefs legitimizing antisocial behaviour and less parental monitoring (males only) than indirect victims and uninvolved participants. Only normative beliefs legitimizing antisocial behaviour distinguished direct bully-victims and bullies from victims and uninvolved adolescents. Results illuminate the distinct characteristics of direct and indirect bully-victims; theoretical and clinical implications are discussed. Aggr. Behav. 32:551,569. 2006. © 2006 Wiley-Liss, Inc. Insecticide resistance in the malarial mosquito Anopheles arabiensis and association with the kdr mutation

MEDICAL AND VETERINARY ENTOMOLOGY, Issue 1 2007
T. S. MATAMBO
Abstract A colony of Anopheles arabiensis Patton (Diptera: Culicidae) from the Sennar region of Sudan was selected for resistance to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT). Adults from the F-16 generation of the resistant strain were exposed to all four classes of insecticides approved for use in malaria vector control and showed high levels of resistance to them all (24-h mortalities: malathion, 16.7%; bendiocarb, 33.3%; DDT, 12.1%; dieldrin, 0%; deltamethrin, 24.0%; permethrin, 0%). Comparisons between the unselected base colony and the DDT-resistant strain showed elevated glutathione- S -transferase (P < 0.05) in both sexes and elevated esterases (P < 0.05) in males only. The Leu-Phe mutation in the sodium channel gene was detected by polymerase chain reaction and sequencing, but showed no correlation with the resistant phenotype. These results do not provide any explanation as to why this colony exhibits such widespread resistance and further studies are needed to determine the precise mechanisms involved. The implications for malaria vector control in central Sudan are serious and resistance management (e.g. through the rotational use of different classes of insecticides) is recommended. [source]

Size compensation in moth larvae: attention to larval instars

PHYSIOLOGICAL ENTOMOLOGY, Issue 3 2010
TOOMAS ESPERK
Environmental perturbations such as starvation and poor diet often prevent animals from attaining their optimal sizes. When the perturbation has a transient character, compensatory responses are expected in terms of faster growth or a prolonged developmental period. In the case of insect larvae, details of such responses are insufficiently known at the proximate level. Attention to responses at the level of particular larval instars should promote an understanding of insect developmental plasticity also in a more general context. To provide an instar-specific analysis of compensatory growth, larvae of the moth Orgyia antiqua (L.) are reared on inferior diet during one larval instar. Responses in growth parameters are recorded in the course of the manipulated instars, as well as at the level of the entire larval period. The negative relationship between development time and size in response to the inferior food quality, typical of the entire larval periods, is also observed within the manipulated instars taken separately. The manipulated larvae remain smaller than the larvae of the control group (significant in males only), even by the end of the subsequent instar during which all individuals are provided with superior host. In males, close to full size compensation by the time of pupation is achieved only by means of adding an extra larval instar. The inability of larvae to fully compensate during one and even two instars is considered as an indication of the presence of constraints on the within-instar growth pattern. An alternative, adaptational explanation for the incomplete compensation could be based on the cost of prolonged development period. Given the ecological context of the species' life history, such an explanation appears less likely. [source]
