Wills Background:, Repeated stress or administration of corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) prior to ethanol exposure sensitizes anxiety-like behavior in adult rats. Current experiments determined whether adolescent rats were more sensitive to these challenges in sensitizing ethanol withdrawal-induced anxiety and altering CRF levels in brain during withdrawal. Methods:, Male adult and adolescent Sprague,Dawley rats were restraint stressed (1 hour) twice 1 week apart prior to a single 5-day cycle of ethanol diet (ED; stress/withdrawal paradigm). Other rats received control diet (CD) and three 1-hour restraint stress sessions. Rats were then tested 5, 24, or 48 hours after the final withdrawal for anxiety-like behavior in the social interaction (SI) test. In other experiments, adolescent rats were given two microinjections of CRF icv 1 week apart followed by 5 days of either CD or ED and tested in social interaction 5 hours into withdrawal. Finally, CRF immunoreactivity was measured in the central nucleus of the amygdala (CeA) and paraventricular nucleus (PVN) after rats experienced control diet, repeated ethanol withdrawals, or stress/withdrawal. Results:, Rats of both ages had reduced SI following the stress/withdrawal paradigm, and this effect recovered within 24 hours. Higher CRF doses were required to reduce SI in adolescents than previously reported in adults. CRF immunohistochemical levels were higher in the PVN and CeA of CD-exposed adolescents. In adolescent rats, repeated ethanol withdrawals decreased CRF in the CeA but was not associated with decreased CRF cell number. There was no change in CRF from adult treatments. Conclusions:, In the production of anxiety-like behavior, adolescent rats have equal sensitivity with stress and lower sensitivity with CRF compared to adults. Further, adolescents had higher basal levels of CRF within the PVN and CeA and reduced CRF levels following repeated ethanol withdrawals. This reduced CRF within the CeA could indicate increased release of CRF, and future work will determine how this change relates to behavior. [source] Differential Dietary Ethanol Intake and Blood Ethanol Levels in Adolescent and Adult Rats: Effects on Anxiety-Like Behavior and Seizure ThresholdsALCOHOLISM, Issue 8 2008Tiffany A. Wills Background:, Adult rats exhibit increased anxiety-like behavior after exposure to repeated cycles of chronic ethanol and withdrawal. While adolescent rats have differential responses to both acute and chronic ethanol treatments, the potential differences in the effects of repeated withdrawals in this population have yet to be determined. Methods:, Male adult and adolescent rats received three 5-day cycles of either a 4.5% or 7% ethanol diet (ED) separated by two 2-day withdrawal periods. Five hours into the final withdrawal, rats were tested for social interaction (SI) deficits (an index of anxiety-like behavior) and then assessed for seizure thresholds (audiogenic and bicuculline-induced). Ethanol intake was monitored throughout, and blood ethanol concentrations (BEC) were obtained from a separate group of rats. Results:, Adolescent rats have reduced SI during the final withdrawal from either ED and exhibit a greater reduction in SI compared to adult rats when exposed to a 7%ED. Audiogenic seizures were not increased during withdrawal from either ED in adult rats, but adolescent rats that received 7%ED displayed increased seizures. The bicuculline seizure thresholds were decreased in both ages exposed to a 7%ED, but only adolescent rats showed this decreased threshold after 4.5%ED. Ethanol intakes and BECs were higher in adolescent rats compared to similarly treated adults. However, ethanol intakes and BECs were comparable between 4.5%ED-treated adolescent and 7%ED-treated adult rats. Conclusions:, Behavioral results from the 7%ED-treated groups suggested that adolescent rats may be more vulnerable to repeated withdrawals from ethanol than adults; however, differences in ethanol intake and BECs may be at least in part responsible. When ethanol intakes and BECs were similar between 4.5%ED-treated adolescent and 7%ED-treated adult rats, behavioral effects were not different. Importantly, these data illustrated that adolescent rats can exhibit anxiety and reduced seizure thresholds following this repeated withdrawal paradigm. [source] A summons to the consuming animalBUSINESS ETHICS: A EUROPEAN REVIEW, Issue 3 2010John Desmond This paper considers Derrida's principal works on the animal as comprising a summons to the consuming animal, the human subject. It summarizes, firstly, Derrida's accusation that the entire Western philosophic tradition is guilty of a particularly pernicious disavowal of its repudiation of the animal. This disavowal underpins what he calls the ,carnophallogocentric order' that privileges the virile male adult as a transcendental subject. The paper shows how he calls this line of argument into question by challenging the purity of the predicates that are presumed to secure human self-presence, such as capacity of response. This questioning is extended to consider marketing discourse in relation to the animal. In the second part of the paper, Derrida's arguments from the points of view of ,animalséance' (which here is referred to as ,animalmalaise') and ,limitography' are compared and contrasted with those of animal ethicists, Peter Singer and Tom Regan, and with Emmanuel Levinas. Finally, some implications are discussed for what it might mean to eat well. Impulsive aggression in adults with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Objective:, DSM-IV criteria for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) include examples of ,impulsivity'. This term can refer to various dysfunctional behaviours, including some examples of aggressive behaviour. However, impulsive aggression is not included in the DSM-IV criteria for ADHD. The associations of impulsive aggression with ADHD were investigated. Method:, Seventy-three male adults with DSM-IV ADHD, and their informants, completed questionnaires. Impulsive aggression was assessed by ratings of two criteria for borderline personality disorder (BPD), involving hot temper and/or self-harm. Results:, Logistic regression indicated that features of DSM-IV ADHD were predictors of comorbid impulsive aggression. However, compared with ADHD features, verbal IQ and comorbid psychopathology were more strongly associated with impulsive aggression. Conclusion:, The findings support the inclusion of features of impulsive aggression, such as hot temper/short fuse, in the ADHD syndrome in adults. These overlap with features of BPD. The findings inform the selection of research samples. [source] Oestradiol replacement treatment and glucose homeostasis in two men with congenital aromatase deficiency: evidence for a role of oestradiol and sex steroids imbalance on insulin sensitivity in menDIABETIC MEDICINE, Issue 12 2007V. Rochira Abstract Aims The role of sex steroids in glucose and insulin metabolism in men remains unclear. To investigate the effects of sex steroids and oestrogen on insulin sensitivity in men, we studied two male adults with aromatase deficiency (subject 1 and subject 2). Methods The effects of transdermal oestradiol (tE2) treatment at different dosages on insulin sensitivity were studied before tE2 treatment (phase 1), and after 6 months (phase 2) and 12 months of tE2 treatment (phase 3) by means of homeostasis model assessment,insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and Quantitative Insulin Sensitivity Check Index (QUICKI), insulin tolerance test (ITT), and oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT). The latter was performed only in subject 1, as subject 2 suffered from Type 2 diabetes. Results The restoration of normal serum oestradiol led to improved insulin sensitivity, as shown by changes in HOMA-IR and QUICKI. The ITT provided evidence of improved insulin sensitivity during tE2 treatment. Insulin secretion after OGTT was reduced during tE2 treatment in subject 1. After 12 months of tE2 treatment, insulin sensitivity was improved compared with in phases 1 and 2. Conclusions The study suggests a direct involvement of oestrogens in insulin sensitivity, and supports a possible role of oestradiol : testosterone ratio, which may be as influencial as the separate actions of each sex steroid on glucose homeostasis. [source] Patterns of morbidity in late medieval England: a sample from Westminster AbbeyECONOMIC HISTORY REVIEW, Issue 2 2001Barbara Harver A comparison between secular hospitals and monastic infirmaries introduces a discussion of the duration and seasonality of the illnesses of the monks of Westminster in two periods: 1297/8 to 1354/5 and 1381/2 to 1416/17. A change in the duration of illnesses is related to change in the conventions of treatment after the Black Death of 1348/9. The resemblance between the seasonal pattern of morbidity in this sample and that of mortality among male adults in the early modern period is discussed. It is suggested that the latter pattern may extend into the late middle ages. [source] Influence of host plant odours on invasion of the rice leaf bug Trigonotylus caelestialium into paddy fieldsAGRICULTURAL AND FOREST ENTOMOLOGY, Issue 1 2010Tatsuya Fujii 1The host-odour preferences of the rice leaf bug Trigonotylus caelestialium between the rice plant Oryza sativa L. and four species of graminaceous weeds, Poa annua, Alopecurus aequalis, Digitaria ciliaris and Eleusine indica, were investigated with an olfactometer aiming to clarify the influence of these odours on invasion of the bug to paddy fields at the flowering stage of rice. 2Both female and male adults significantly preferred the graminaceous weed A. aequalis in the flowering stage to rice in the fifth-leaf stage. The bugs also significantly preferred flowering P. annua and A. aequalis to rice in the panicle-formation stage. However, the bugs showed no preferences between rice in the flowering and grain-filling stages and the flowering graminaceous weeds P. annua, D. ciliaris and E. indica. 3The preference of the rice leaf bug for the flowering graminaceous weeds before rice flowering coincides with the fact that these bugs mainly live on these weeds before rice flowering. It is considered that the bug's similar preference for flowering rice panicles as the flowering graminaceous weeds causes the intense invasion of the bug into paddy fields at this rice developmental stage. [source] A STRUCTURAL EQUATION MODELING OF ALCOHOL USE AMONG YOUNG ADULTS IN THE U.S. MILITARY: COMPLEXITIES AMONG STRESS, DRINKING MOTIVES, IMPULSIVITIY, ALCOHOL USE AND JOB PERFORMANCEALCOHOLISM, Issue 2008Sunju Sohn Aims:, Young male adults in the U. S. military drink at much higher rates than civilians and females of the same age. Drinking has been shown to be associated with stress and individuals' ability to effectively cope with stressors. Despite numerous studies conducted on young adults' drinking behaviors such as college drinking, current literature is limited in fully understanding alcohol use patterns of the young military population. The aim of the present study was to develop and test the hypothesized Structural Equation Model (SEM) of alcohol use to determine if stress coping styles moderate the relationship between stress, drinking motives, impulsivity, alcohol consumption and job performance. Methods:, Structural equation models for multiple group comparisons were estimated based on a sample of 1,715 young (aged 18 to 25) male military personnel using the 2005 Department of Defense Survey of Health Related Behaviors among Military Personnel. Coping style was used as the grouping factor in the multi-group analysis and this variable was developed through numerous steps to reflect positive and negative behaviors of coping. The equivalences of the structural relations between the study variables were then compared across two groups at a time, controlling for installation region, race/ethnicity, marital status, education, and pay grade, resulting in two model comparisons with four coping groups. If the structural weight showed differences across groups, each parameter was constrained and tested one at a time to see where the models are different. Results:, The results showed that the hypothesized model applies across all groups. The structural weights revealed that a moderation effect exists between a group whose tendency is to mostly use positive coping strategies and a group whose tendency is to mostly use negative coping strategies (,,2(39)= 65.116, p<.05). More specifically, the models were different (with and without Bonferroni Type I error correction) in the paths between "motive and alcohol use" and "alcohol use and alcohol-related consequences (job performance)." Conclusions:, It seems plausible that coping style significantly factors into moderating alcohol use among young male military personnel who reportedly drink more excessively than civilians of the same age. The results indicate that it may be particularly important for the military to assess different stress coping styles ofyoung male military personnel so as to limit excessive drinking as well as to promote individual wellness and improve job performance. [source] Neither Antisocial Personality Disorder Nor Antisocial Alcoholism Is Associated With the MAO-A Gene in Han Chinese MalesALCOHOLISM, Issue 6 2003Ru-Band Lu Background: Recent studies on the genetics of alcoholism have suggested an association between antisocial alcoholism and the MAO-A gene. However, previous studies have failed to include subjects with antisocial personality disorder without alcoholism even though there is a high comorbidity between antisocial personality disorder and alcoholism. Consequently, the finding of an association between the MAO-A gene and alcoholism or antisocial personality disorder seems tenuous. In Taiwan, about 70% of the Han Chinese population have the ADH2*2 allele and 50% show ALDH2*1/*2 or ALDH2*2/*2 genotypes, which offer protection against drinking behavior and the risk of developing alcoholism. Thus, it is possible to recruit individuals with antisocial personality disorder but without alcoholism in Taiwan. Therefore, association studies of alcoholism or antisocial personality disorder in Chinese may be more reliable if pure antisocial alcoholics, pure antisocial personality disorders, and normal controls as MAO-A gene are examined. Methods: In this study, the associations among antisocial alcoholism, antisocial personality disorder, and the uVNTR and Eco RV polymorphisms of the MAO-A gene, both individually and as a haplotype, were investigated among male adults recruited from jails in Taipei. A total of 129 Chinese Han males were studied, including 41 with antisocial personality disorder with alcoholism, 50 with antisocial personality disorder but without alcoholism, and 38 without either disorder as a jail control group. The diagnoses of alcohol dependence and antisocial personality disorder were made according to DSM-IV criteria. In addition, 77 normal controls were collected from the community. Results: Strong linkage disequilibrium was found for the uVNTR and Eco RV variants of MAO-A gene in each study group. Conclusions: No significant association was observed between these two polymorphisms and antisocial personality disorder with alcoholism, either individually or for the haplotype, or for antisocial personality disorder without alcoholism. Thus, neither antisocial alcoholism nor antisocial personality disorder was associated with the genetic variants of MAO-A gene. [source] Fat-tailed gene flow in the dioecious canopy tree species Fraxinus mandshurica var. japonica revealed by microsatellitesMOLECULAR ECOLOGY, Issue 10 2006S. GOTO Abstract Pollen flow, seed dispersal and individual reproductive success can be simultaneously estimated from the genotypes of adults and offspring using stochastic models. Using four polymorphic microsatellite loci, gene flow of the wind-pollinated and wind-seed-dispersed dioecious tree species, Fraxinus mandshurica var. japonica, was quantified in a riparian forest, in northern Japan. In a 10.5-ha plot, 74 female adults, 76 male adults and 292 current-year seedlings were mapped and genotyped, together with 200 seeds. To estimate dispersal kernels of pollen and seeds, we applied normal, exponential power, Weibull, bivariate t -distribution kernels, and two-component models consisting of two normal distribution functions, one with a small and one with a large variance. A two-component pollen flow model with a small contribution (26.1%) from short-distance dispersal (, = 7.2 m), and the rest from long-distance flow (, = 209.9 m), was chosen for the best-fitting model. The average distance that integrated pollen flows inside and outside the study plot was estimated to be 196.8 m. Tree size and flowering intensity affected reproduction, and there appeared to be critical values that distinguished reproductively successful and unsuccessful adults. In contrast, the gene flow model that estimated both pollen and seed dispersal from established seedlings resulted in extensive seed dispersal, and the expected spatial genetic structures did not satisfactorily fit with the observations, even for the selected model. Our results advanced small-scale individual-based parentage analysis for quantifying fat-tailed gene flow in wind-mediated species, but also clarified its limitations and suggested future possibilities for gene flow studies. [source] Normal interhemispheric inhibition in persistent developmental stuttering,MOVEMENT DISORDERS, Issue 5 2009Martin Sommer MD Abstract Imaging studies suggest a right hemispheric (pre)motor overactivity in patients with persistent developmental stuttering (PDS). The interhemispheric inhibition (IHI) studied with transcranial magnetic stimulation is an established measure of the interplay between right and left motor areas. We assessed IHI in 15 young male adults with PDS and 15 age-matched fluent-speaking subjects. We additionally studied the ipsilateral silent period (iSP) duration. We found no significant between-group difference for IHI or for iSP duration. We conclude that the interplay between the primary motor cortices is normal in patients with PDS. The abnormal right motor and premotor activity observed in functional imaging studies on PDS are not likely to reflect altered primary motor cortex excitability, but are likely to have a different origin. © 2009 Movement Disorder Society [source] Obesity in Mediterranean region (1997,2007): a systematic reviewOBESITY REVIEWS, Issue 5 2008C. Papandreou Summary The objective of this review is to determine the distribution of obesity by geographical location, income, age and sex in the Mediterranean region during the last decade. A meta-analysis was conducted for 102 articles cited during the period (1997,2007) in Medline database (for 17 Mediterranean countries) searched during the summer of 2007 using the word ,obesity' and its related keywords. The study showed that adults were more obese than children in all Mediterranean continents and in different levels of income. The prevalence of obesity among European children was higher than among Asians. Also, European adults were more obese than European children. The total female adults were found to be more obese (median: 25.3%) than male adults (median: 20.0%). The regression model analysis indicated that male adults were more likely to be obese in the Euro-Med region. Taking different factors into consideration, it was noticed that Mediterranean adults, especially those in the European region, are at higher risk of obesity. Awareness programmes addressing the importance of adopting healthy dietary habits combined with physical activity should target the whole community in general and adults in particular. The findings could guide health planners for better management of obesity. Characterization of 33 488 children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes based on the gender-specific increase of cardiovascular risk factors. Objectives: Characterization of children with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) regarding number and gender distribution of cardiovascular risk factors (cvRF) and of total cholesterol/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol ratio (TC/HDL-C ratio) for risk assessment. Methods: 33488 patients ,18 years were included in this cross-sectional analysis and placed into 5 categories by their number of cvRF. Dyslipidemia (TC >200 mg/dL, >5.17 mmol/L; and/or HDL-C <35 mg/dL, <0.91 mmol/L; and/or LDL-C >130 mg/dL, >3.36 mmol/L), elevated systolic and/or diastolic blood pressure (BP) ,90th percentile, obesity >97th percentile, active smoking, and HbA1c ,7.5% were considered as cvRF. Results: 65% had no or 1 cvRF. HbA1c ,7.5% was the most frequently occurring cvRF followed by BP ,90th percentile, dyslipidemia, smoking, and BMI >97th percentile. Age at diabetic onset ranged from 7.7 to 9.2 years and diabetes duration from 4.1 to 6.6 years. CvRF showed differences in disfavour of females except smoking and HDL-C <35 mg/dL (0.91 mmol/L). Rate of females was 45% with 0 cvRF and 60% with 4 to 5 cvRF. TC/HDL-C ratio showed no clear association to the number of cvRF. Conclusions: 35% of a pediatric T1DM population develops 2 or more cvRF thus increasing their cv risk in adulthood. With increasing numbers of cvRF, the percentage of girls is rising from 45% to 60% which might contribute to an assimilation of survival rates in female and male adults. TC/HDL ratio does not predict the extent of cardiovascular risk in pediatric T1DM. [source] The relationship between serum resistin, leptin, adiponectin, ghrelin levels and bone mineral density in middle-aged menCLINICAL ENDOCRINOLOGY, Issue 2 2005Ki Won Oh Summary Objective Body weight is a significant predictor of bone mass. Hormonal factors such as sex hormones, insulin, leptin and adiponectin are thought to play a role in the mechanisms controlling the association of body weight and fat mass with bone mass. However, contradictory results have been reported for the association between serum adipocytokines and bone mineral density (BMD). We therefore examined whether the serum adipocytokine and ghrelin levels, markers of fat metabolism, are associated with BMD in male adults. Patients and measurements For 80 male adults (average age 54·5 ± 6·4 years; average body mass index (BMI) 24·4 ± 2·5 kg/m2), the correlations between serum resistin, leptin, adiponectin and ghrelin levels with BMD were investigated. Results Among the adipocytokines, serum resistin levels were negatively correlated with lumbar spine BMD (r = ,0·237, P = 0·05). After adjustment was made for age and BMI, log-transformed serum leptin showed a significant negative correlation with lumbar spine BMD, which was not seen on bivariate analysis (r = ,0·237, P = 0·039). Femoral neck BMD was marginally associated only with serum adiponectin levels (r = ,0·226, P = 0·062). In multiple regression analyses, among the adipokines, only resistin was a significant determinant of lumbar spine BMD, although the variance was small (R2 = 0·256). Serum ghrelin levels were not correlated with the BMD of either body site. Conclusions Serum resistin level showed a significant negative correlation with lumbar spine BMD, although the variance was small. Further studies are needed to elucidate the role of adipocytokines in bone metabolism. [source] |
