Theoretical Study on Co3+ in Aqueous Solution in Terms of ABEEM/MM Model

Abstract A detailed theoretical investigation on Co3+ hydration in aqueous solution has been carried out by means of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations based on the atom-bond electronegativity equalization method fused into molecular mechanics (ABEEM/MM). The effective Co3+ ion-water potential has been constructed by fitting to ab initio structures and binding energies for ionic clusters. And then the ion-water interaction potential was applied in combination with the ABEEM-7P water model to molecular dynamics simulations of single Co3+(aq.) solution, managing to reproduce many experimental structural and dynamical properties of the solution. Here, not only the common properties (radial distribution function, angular distribution function and solvation energy) obtained for Co3+ in ABEEM-7P water solution were in good agreement with those from the experimental methods and other molecular dynamics simulations but also very interesting properties of charge distributions, geometries of water molecules, hydrogen bond, diffusion coefficients, vibrational spectra are investigated by ABEEM/MM model. Refractive index and third-order nonlinear susceptibility of C60 in the condensed phase calculated with the discrete solvent reaction field model

Abstract We have calculated the frequency-dependent refractive index and the third-order nonlinear susceptibility for C60 in the condensed phase, which is related to third-harmonic generation (THG) and degenerate four-wave mixing (DFWM) experiments. This was done using the recently developed discrete solvent reaction field (DRF) model, which combines a time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) description of the central C60 molecule with a classical polarizable MM model for the rest of the fullerene cluster. Using this model, effective microscopic properties can be calculated that, combined with calculated local field factors, give macroscopic susceptibilities. The largest calculation was for a cluster of 63 C60 molecules in which the central molecule was treated with TD-DFT. For this molecule, the effective polarizability was increased with about 15% and the effective second hyperpolarizability with about 60% compared with the gas phase. The calculated refractive index was found to be in good agreement with experiments and other theoretical results. The agreement with THG experiments was within a factor of two, whereas for DFWM the agreement was less good due to the neglect of vibrational contributions in the calculations. It was found that it is more important to account for the dispersion in the third-order susceptibilities than in the corresponding second hyperpolarizability. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Effects of Alcoholism Typology on Response to Naltrexone in the COMBINE Study

Background:, This study investigated whether subgroups of alcohol-dependent patients responded differently to naltrexone versus placebo in the NIAAA COMBINE study. In particular, the A versus B and the Early Onset versus Late Onset typologies were examined. Relative to Type A alcoholics, Type B alcoholics are characterized by greater severity, earlier onset, stronger family history, more childhood risk factors (e.g., conduct disorder), and greater frequency of comorbid psychiatric and substance use disorders. Methods:, COMBINE study participants were categorized as Type A or Type B using k-means cluster analysis and variables from 5 domains that have been shown to replicate the original Babor typology efficiently. Early Onset was defined as alcohol dependence beginning before age 25. For the planned analyses, the sample was reduced to the 618 participants receiving naltrexone alone or placebo, either with medical management (MM) alone or with MM plus the Combined Behavioral Intervention (CBI). The a priori primary outcome was percent heavy drinking days during treatment in the groups receiving MM without CBI. Results:, Among those receiving MM without CBI, Type A alcoholics had better drinking outcomes with naltrexone than placebo, whereas medication condition did not influence outcomes significantly in the Type Bs. Age of onset was not significantly related to outcome. For those receiving CBI, no significant effects were found for either typology. Conclusions:, In this sample, the beneficial effects of opioid antagonism were limited to Type A alcoholics receiving treatment in a MM model. Future studies should investigate the relationship between clinically relevant genotypes, phenotypes such as typologies, and treatment response. More work is also needed to develop practical algorithms for phenotypic assignment. [source]


A Density Functional Study of Ethylene Insertion into the M-methyl (M = Ti, Zr) Bond for Different Catalysts, with a QM/MM Model for the Counterion, B(C6F5)3CH3,

Single site homogeneous catalysts have been studied extensively in recent years as alternatives to traditional heterogeneous catalysts. The current theoretical study uses density functional theory to study the insertion process of the ethylene monomer into the titanium-carbon chain for contact ion-pair systems of the type [L1L2TiCH3 -,-CH3 -B(C6F5)3], where L1, L2, are Cp, NPH3, and other ligands. Different modes of approach cis and trans to the ,-CH3 bridge were considered. The counterion, B(C6F5)3CH3,, was modeled by QM/MM methods. The value of ,Htot,the total barrier to insertion,was found to be positive (in the range of 4,15 kcal/mol). The ability of the ancillary ligands, L1 and L2, to stabilize the ion-pair was found to be an important factor in determining the value of ,Htot. On replacing the titanium metal center with zirconium, the ,Htot values were found to be lowered (in the range of 2,9 kcal/mol), indicating that they would be better catalysts than their titanium analogues. The size of the ligands L1 and L2 was increased by replacing hydrogens in the ligands with tertiary butyl groups. The value of ,Htot was found to increase (in the range of 10,28 kcal/mol) in contrast to the simple systems, for both the cis and trans cases of approach, with the cis mode of approach giving lower values of ,Htot. Solvent effects were incorporated with cyclohexane (, = 2.023) as the solvent, and were found to have a minor influence, ±(0.5,1.5) kcal/mol) on the insertion barrier for all the cases studied.
