Estimation of temporal variation in splash detachment in two Japanese cypress plantations of contrasting age

Abstract To elucidate splash erosion processes under natural rainfall conditions, temporal variations in splash detachment were observed using a piezoelectric saltation sensor (H11B; Sensit Co., Portland, ND, USA). Preliminary laboratory tests of Sensit suggested that they were suitable for field observations. Field observations were conducted between July and September 2006 in 21- and 36-year-old Japanese cypress (Chamaecyparis obtusa) plantations with mean stand heights of 9·2,m and 17·4,m, respectively. Splash detachment (in g m,2) was measured seven times using splash cups, and raindrop kinetic energy (in J,m,2,mm,1) in both stands was measured using laser drop-sizing (LD) gauges. Sensit was installed to record saltation counts, which were converted to temporal data of splash detachment (splash rate; in g m,2 10,min,1) using the relationship between splash detachment and saltation counts. Surface runoff was monitored using runoff plots of 0·5,m width and 2·0,m length to obtain temporal data of flow depth (in millimeters). Both total splash detachment and raindrop kinetic energy were larger in the older stand. Increased splash rates per unit throughfall were found in both stands after rainless durations longer than approximately one day in both stands. However, a lower splash rate was found in the 21-year stand after rainfall events. During extreme rainstorms, the 21-year stand showed a low runoff rate and a decline in the splash rate, while the 36-year stand showed a higher splash rate and increased flow depth. Aeolian fetch distance and secondary airflow effects: the influence of micro-scale variables on meso-scale foredune development

Abstract Unsuccessful attempts to use process-scale models to predict long-term aeolian sediment transport patterns have long been a feature of aeolian research. It has been proposed that one approach to overcome these problems is to identify micro-scale variables that are important at longer timescales. This paper assesses the contribution of two system variables (secondary airflow patterns and fetch distance) to medium-term (months to years) dune development. The micro-scale importance of these variables had been established during previous work at the site (Magilligan Strand, Northern Ireland). Three methods were employed. First, sand drift potentials were calculated using 2 years of regional wind data and a sediment transport model. Second, wind data and large trench traps (2 m length × 1 m width × 1·5 m depth) were used to assess the actual sediment transport patterns over a 2-month period. Third, a remote-sensing technique for the identification of fetch distance, a saltation impact sensor (Safire) and wind data were utilized to gauge, qualitatively, sediment transport patterns over a 1-month period. Secondary airflow effects were found to play a major role in the sediment flux patterns at these timescales, with measured and predicted rates matching closely during the trench trap study. Widespread occurrence of an intranuclear bacterial parasite in vent and seep bathymodiolin mussels

Summary Many parasitic bacteria live in the cytoplasm of multicellular animals, but only a few are known to regularly invade their nuclei. In this study, we describe the novel bacterial parasite "Candidatus Endonucleobacter bathymodioli" that invades the nuclei of deep-sea bathymodiolin mussels from hydrothermal vents and cold seeps. Bathymodiolin mussels are well known for their symbiotic associations with sulfur- and methane-oxidizing bacteria. In contrast, the parasitic bacteria of vent and seep animals have received little attention despite their potential importance for deep-sea ecosystems. We first discovered the intranuclear parasite "Ca. E. bathymodioli" in Bathymodiolus puteoserpentis from the Logatchev hydrothermal vent field on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Using primers and probes specific to "Ca. E. bathymodioli" we found this intranuclear parasite in at least six other bathymodiolin species from vents and seeps around the world. Fluorescence in situ hybridization and transmission electron microscopy analyses of the developmental cycle of "Ca. E. bathymodioli" showed that the infection of a nucleus begins with a single rod-shaped bacterium which grows to an unseptated filament of up to 20 ,m length and then divides repeatedly until the nucleus is filled with up to 80 000 bacteria. The greatly swollen nucleus destroys its host cell and the bacteria are released after the nuclear membrane bursts. Intriguingly, the only nuclei that were never infected by "Ca. E. bathymodioli" were those of the gill bacteriocytes. These cells contain the symbiotic sulfur- and methane-oxidizing bacteria, suggesting that the mussel symbionts can protect their host nuclei against the parasite. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the "Ca. E. bathymodioli" belongs to a monophyletic clade of Gammaproteobacteria associated with marine metazoans as diverse as sponges, corals, bivalves, gastropods, echinoderms, ascidians and fish. We hypothesize that many of the sequences from this clade originated from intranuclear bacteria, and that these are widespread in marine invertebrates. [source]


Recent Activities of HTS Power Application in Korea

From April 2007, DAPAS (Development of the Advanced Power system by Applied Superconductivity technologies), which is a 10-year-long program, entered the final phase with 4 years. For the last 7 years, the significant achievement of DAPAS is that a 10 m long and 100 A critical current-coated conductor and core technologies of distribution line voltage class HTS power systems including cables, transformers, fault current limiters (FCLs), and motors have been developed. In particular, a 100 m length HTS power cable was installed and is operating well in the Gochang power system test center. Two different types of FCL were successfully developed and demonstrated very good results of fault current test with 22.9 kV distribution line voltage class. In the case of the HTS motor, it was well operated too on connecting to 2 units of a 1.1 MVA conventional induction motor each as a load. In addition, the coated conductor project team achieved a 30 m length and 185 A critical current-coated conductor tape after 6 months since the hardware was set up. [source]


Supplementation of diets for lactating sows with zinc amino acid complex and gastric nutriment-intubation of suckling pigs with zinc methionine on mineral status, intestinal morphology and bacterial translocation in lipopolysaccharide-challenged weaned pigs

Summary Sixty-four pigs from 16 sows were used to evaluate addition of zinc amino acid complex (ZnAA) to lactating sows and gastric nutriment-intubation of zinc methionine (ZnMet) to suckling pigs on mineral status, intestinal morphology and bacterial translocation after weaning. Sows were fed a barley-based diet supplying 120 ppm zinc (Zn; control) or the control diet supplemented with 240 ppm Zn from ZnAA. At birth, day-10 and day-21 (weaning) of age, pigs from each litter were nutriment-intubated with 5 ml of an electrolyte solution without or with 40 mg Zn from ZnMet. At weaning, 24 h prior to the collection of small and large intestinal lymph nodes and sections of the duodenum, jejunum and ileum, the pigs received an intramuscular injection of saline without or with 150 ,g/kg body weight of Escherichia coli O26:B6 lipopolysaccharide (LPS). With the exception of a tendency (p = 0.09) for lower serum concentration of copper in pigs at weaning from ZnAA-supplemented sows, there were no differences (p > 0.1) than for pigs from control-fed sows for mineral status or intestinal morphology. Nutriment-intubation of ZnMet increased serum (p = 0.001) and liver (p = 0.003) Zn concentrations, number of goblet cells per 250 ,m length of jejunal villous epithelium (p = 0.001) and tended (p = 0.06) to enhance jejunum mucosa thickness. Interactive effects (p < 0.05) for higher jejunal villi height and villi:crypt ratio and increased ileal goblet cell counts were apparent for pigs from ZnAA-supplemented sows that also received nutriment-intubation of ZnMet. Challenge with LPS increased (p = 0.05) ileal villous width. Nutriment-intubation of ZnMet decreased (p = 0.05) anaerobic bacteria colony forming unit counts in the large intestinal mesenteric lymph nodes. In conclusion, nutriment-intubation of ZnMet increased serum and liver tissue concentrations of Zn and resulted in limited improvement to intestinal morphology of weaned pigs. [source]


Evaluation of a new fiber-reinforced resin composite

Abstract Efficacy of the usage of an experimental fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) on mechanical properties of an indirect composite was investigated by means of three-point bending and Charpy impact tests. Bond strength between the FRC and the indirect composite was also evaluated by tensile testing. The FRC consisted of a matrix resin with 25% silanized milled glass fiber (11-,m diameter, 150-,m length) and 5% colloidal silica. The values of strain of proportional limit, total strain, and fracture energy of the FRC during the bending test (1.2%, 10.4%, and 41.6 × 10,3 J) were significantly higher than those of the indirect composite (0.1%, 2.5%, and 11.9 × 10,3 J). The impact strengths of the 1-mm specimens with FRC ranged from 15.2 to 15.9 kJ/m2, and were significantly higher than that of the control (3.1 kJ/m2). The 2-mm specimens showed significant difference from the control when the FRC thickness was equal or greater than 0.5 mm. The bond strength after the thermocycling was 15.2 MPa, and all of the specimens exhibited cohesive fracture inside the indirect composite. Based upon the results, it was concluded that the FRC tested in this study improved toughness and impact resistance of the indirect composite. Controlling the Size and Morphology of TiO2 Powder by Molten and Solid Salt Synthesis

Nano and submicrometer scale titanium oxide (TiO2) powders were synthesized by solid and molten salt synthesis (SSS and MSS) from amorphous titanium hydroxide precipitate. Sodium chloride (NaCl) and dibasic sodium phosphate (Na2HPO4·2H2O, DSP) separately or as mixture with different weight ratios were used as the salts. At the eutectic salt composition (20% DSP/80% NaCl), the microstructure and phase composition of the TiO2 was changed from equiaxed nanoparticles of anatase with size ,40,50 nm, to mixed microstructure of bundle and acicular particles of rutile with 0.05,0.2 ,m diameter, 6,10 ,m length, and aspect ratio 20,60 depending on treatment time and temperature. At high temperature (825°C) and long time (30 h), microstructural differences were significant for the powders treated with different salts. Particle morphologies ranged from equiaxed, to acicular, to bundles, to nanofibers with very high aspect ratio. At lower treatment temperature (725°C) for shorter time (3 h), the morphology of the products did not change with different salt compositions, but the crystallite sizes changed appreciably. Different starting titanium precursors influenced particle size at lower temperature and time. Titanium hydroxide heat treated without salt resulted in significant grain growth and fused secondary particles, as compared with more finely separated and lightly agglomerated powders resulting from SSS and MSS treatments. Investigating the Fate and Transport of Escherichia coli in the Charles River, Boston, Using High-Resolution Observation and Modeling,

Abstract:, The processes affecting the fate and transport of Escherichia coli in surface waters were investigated using high-resolution observation and modeling. The concentration patterns in Boston's Charles River were observed during four sampling events with a total of 757 samples, including two spatial surveys with two along-river (1,500 m length) and three across-river (600 m length) transects at approximately 25-m intervals, and two temporal surveys at a fixed location (Community Boating) over seven days at hourly intervals. The data reveal significant spatial and temporal structure at scales not resolved by typical monitoring programs. A mechanistic, time-variable, three-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic and water quality model was developed using the ECOMSED and RCA modeling frameworks. The computational grid consists of 3,066 grid cells with average length dimension of 25 m. Forcing functions include upstream and downstream boundary conditions, Stony Brook, and Muddy River (major tributaries) combined sewer overflow (CSO) and non-CSO discharge and wind. The model generally reproduces the observed spatial and temporal patterns. This includes the presence and absence of a plume in the study area under similar loading, but different hydrodynamic conditions caused by operation of the New Charles River Dam (downstream) and wind. The model also correctly predicts an episode of high concentrations at the time-series station following seven days of no rainfall. The model has an overall root mean square error (RMSE) of 250 CFU/100 ml and an error rate (above or below the USEPA-recommended single sample criteria value of 235 CFU/100 ml) of 9.4%. At the time series station, the model has an RMSE of 370 CFU/100 ml and an error rate of 15%. [source]


Seasonal variability in velocity and ablation of Te Moeka o Tuawe/Fox Glacier, south Westland, New Zealand

Abstract:, Seasonal variations in ablation and surface velocity were investigated on the lower Fox Glacier. Variations occur between summer and winter ablation, with surface velocity also showing marked seasonality. Recent advance has resulted in the glacier gaining around 200 m length since late 2004. Longer term, Fox Glacier appears linked to the Southern Oscillation Index, with positive glacier mass balances associated with negative Southern Oscillation Index (El Niño). An estimated glacier response time of approximately 9,14 years suggests the current terminus advance was linked to mass gains in the mid-1990s. Recent collapses at the terminal face continue to prove a hazard at this busy tourist destination. [source]


Malignant mesothelioma in Australia, 1945,2000,

Abstract Background Australia has maintained a total national malignant mesothelioma case register since 1980. There has been a marked increase in the incidence of mesothelioma in the last 20 years. Currently 450,600 cases are notified annually in a population of 20 million. While the history of the Wittenoom (Western Australia) crocidolite mine and its aftermath is well known, these cases comprise only 5% of the total. This study describes the incidence of mesothelioma in Australia from 1945 to 2000. Methods Using register data, time trends in mesothelioma incidence were calculated. Analyses of incidence are reported by age, sex, anatomical site, and state of notification. Associations with occupational and environmental asbestos exposure histories are described. Lung fiber content measurements were made on a subset of cases. Results Australia has had 6,329 cases of mesothelioma from 1 January 1945 to 31 December 2000. (A further 620 cases were notified in the period from 1 January 2001 to 31 October 2001.) Annual incidence rates for Australia per million population ,,20 years (1997) were: male, 59.8; female, 10.9; total, 35.4. Incidence rates have been continually increasing and are the highest reported national rates in the world. While Western Australia has the highest rate (1997 total rate, 52.8), most cases arise from the two most populous eastern states, New South Wales and Victoria. In 88% (male 90%, female 61%) of cases, a history of asbestos exposure was obtained. Exposures occurred in a wide variety of occupational and environmental circumstances. In 80% of cases with no history of exposure, TEM lung asbestos fiber counts >,200,000 fibers >,2 ,m length per gm dry lung were obtained, suggesting unrecognized exposure. Conclusions Australia's high incidence of mesothelioma is related to high past asbestos use, of all fiber types, in a wide variety of occupational and environmental settings. Urotricha psenneri n. sp. and Amphileptus piger (Vuxanovici, 1962) n. comb., Two Planktonic Ciliates (Protozoa, Ciliophora) from an Oligotrophic Lake in Austria

ABSTRACT Two euplanktonic ciliates, Urotricha psenneri n. sp. (Prostomatida) and Amphileptus piger (Vuxanovici, 1962) n. comb. (Pleurostomatida), were discovered in the surface plankton of the oligotrophic Lake Traunsee in Austria. Their morphology and infra-ciliature were studied in live cells as well as in specimens impregnated with protargol and silver nitrate. Urotricha psenneri is a small urotrichid, less than 50 ,m length and with a single caudal cilium. It is unique in having (i) a massive oral basket projecting as a conspicuous bulge with cylindrical microfibrillar annulus and (ii) a curved brosse row 1 in the broad, barren circumoral area. Amphileptus piger (Vuxanovici, 1962) is about 55 × 13 ,m in vivo, has two macronuclear nodules with a single micronucleus in between in the posterior body half, has a single contractile vacuole with a terminal excretory pore, and few, but thick and thus highly conspicuous extrusomes. The amphileptid ciliary pattern (spica) is difficult to recognise due to the widely spaced basal bodies. [source]


Combined seismic tomographic and ultrashallow seismic reflection study of an Early Dynastic mastaba, Saqqara, Egypt

Abstract Mastabas were large rectangular structures built for the funerals and burials of the earliest Pharaohs. One such mastaba was the basic building block that led to the first known stone pyramid, the,>4600-year old Step Pyramid within the Saqqara necropolis of Egypt. We have tested a number of shallow geophysical techniques for investigating in a non-invasive manner the subsurface beneath a large Early Dynastic mastaba located close to the Step Pyramid. After discovering that near-surface sedimentary rocks with unusually high electrical conductivities precluded the use of the ground-penetrating radar method, a very high-resolution seismic data set was collected along a profile that extended the 42.5,m length of the mastaba. A sledgehammer source was used every 0.2,m and the data were recorded using a 48-channel array of single geophones spaced at 0.2,m intervals. Inversions of the direct- and refracted-wave travel times provided P-wave velocity tomograms of the shallow subsurface, whereas relatively standard processing techniques yielded a high-fold (50,80) ultrashallow seismic reflection section. The tomographic and reflection images were jointly interpreted in terms of loose sand and friable limestone layers with low P-wave velocities of 150,650,m,s,1 overlying consolidated limestone and shale with velocities,>,1500,m,s,1. The sharp contact between the low- and high-velocity regimes was approximately horizontal at a depth of ca. 2,m. This contact was the source of a strong seismic reflection. Above this contact, the velocity tomogram revealed moderately high velocities at the surface location of a friable limestone outcrop and two low-velocity blocks that probably outlined sand-filled shafts. Development of an electrochemical antifouling system for seawater cooling pipelines of power plants using titanium

Abstract Biofouling is the undesirable adhesion and development of microorganisms and macroorganisms in a water environment. An electrochemical antifouling system based on management of primary adhesion of microorganisms was developed employing titanium electrode for antifouling of seawater cooling pipes and marine infrastructures. The system consists of an electrochemical reaction-monitoring unit, a power control unit, and a potential/current remote monitoring and a control unit. Titanium plates and iron plates were used as the working and counter electrode, respectively. Field experiment was conducted in the seawater cooling pipeline system of a thermal power station. Four titanium electrodes with 1.0 m length and 3.0 m width were set in the seawater intake pit and current density was controlled at 50,100 mA/m2. The electrode surface maintained clean conditions for 2 years. The average wet weight of fouling organisms on the titanium electrode surface was below 100 g/m2 whereas the corresponding wet weight was above 10 kg/m2 on the control surface. Using titanium as the electrode material, chlorine and hypochlorite are not generated. The developed electrochemical antifouling system provided an effective, environmentally friendly, and feasible techniques for remote operations. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. [source]


Growing ZnO Crystals on Magnetite Nanoparticles

Abstract We report herein on the oriented growth of ZnO crystals on magnetite nanoparticles. The ZnO crystals were grown by hydrolyzing a supersaturated aqueous solution of zinc nitrate. The seeds for the growth were magnetite nanoparticles with a diameter of 5.7 nm and a narrow size distribution. Hollowed ZnO hexagons of 0.15 ,m width and 0.5 ,m length filled with Fe3O4 particles were obtained. HR-TEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) and selected-area EDS (energy-dispersive spectroscopy) show that the nanoparticles are homogenously spread in the ZnO tubes. Zeta potential measurements were employed to understand the relationship between the nanoparticles and the oriented growth of the ZnO crystals. The results show that the surfactants induced the directional growth of the ZnO crystals. [source]


Fabrication of Long Lengths of Epitaxial Buffer Layers on Biaxially Textured Nickel Substrates Using a Continuous Reel-to-Reel Dip-Coating Unit

A low-cost, nonvacuum, solution precursor route has been developed to produce epitaxial oxide buffer layers of Eu2O3 or La2Zr2O7 on biaxially textured Ni (100) tapes. A reel-to-reel continuous dip-coating unit consisting of a constant-tension tape transport system attached to a controlled atmosphere furnace was fabricated. Nickel tapes were pulled through a 2-methoxyethanol solution of europium methoxyethoxide/acetate or lanthanum zirconium methoxyethoxide. The double-sided dip-coated tapes were then annealed in a preheated furnace at 1000°,1100°C with a high flow rate of Ar/H2 (4%) gas. The dip-coated buffers were dense, continuous, crack-free, and epitaxial with a single cube texture. A critical current (Jc) of >1 MA/cm2 at 77 K and self-field was obtained for YBa2Cu3O7-, (YBCO) films with a layer sequence of YBCO (ex situ BaF2 process)/CeO2 (sputtered)/YSZ (sputtered)/Eu2O3 (dip-coated)/nickel. We have produced 1,2 m lengths of epitaxial buffer layers on textured nickel substrates using a nonvacuum process for the first time. [source]
