Effects of tea catechins on lipid metabolism and body fat accumulation

Abstract Long-term feeding of tea catechins suppressed body fat accumulation in high-fat diet-induced obesity in mice, and that their effects might be attributed, at least in part, to the activation of hepatic lipid metabolism. Consecutive intake of tea catechins (588 mg/day) reduced body fat, especially abdominal fat in humans. These results demonstrate that intake of tea catechins is beneficial for body fat accumulation. REDUCING THE RISK OF PERISTOMAL INFECTION AFTER PEG PLACEMENT

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) was first described in 1980 as an effective means of enteral nutrition where oral intake is not possible. PEG placement is safe and has now replaced the nasogastric tube in patients who need long-term feeding. Although it is relatively safe with a very low associated mortality, minor complications, especially local and systemic infection, remain a problem. Of these, peristomal wound infections are the most common complication of PEG. In patients indicated for this procedure who are aged and/or frail, this complication may pose a critical problem. In the commonly used pull or push methods for PEG placement, the PEG tube is readily colonized by oropharyngeal bacteria. Infection of the PEG site is considered to be associated with contamination of the PEG catheter. There are important measures that should be taken to prevent peristomal infection. A number of rigorous studies have shown that prophylactic antibiotics are effective in reducing the risk of peristomal infection. As methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or other resistant organisms are emerging as a major pathogen in peristomal infection, however, currently recommended antibiotic prophylaxis regimens might be inappropriate. Alternative regimens and other approaches to prevent contamination of the PEG tube during the procedure are required. [source]


The Long-Term Effects of Feeding Honey Compared with Sucrose and a Sugar-Free Diet on Weight Gain, Lipid Profiles, and DEXA Measurements in Rats

ABSTRACT:, To determine whether honey and sucrose would have differential effects on weight gain during long-term feeding, 45 2-mo-old Sprague Dawley rats were fed a powdered diet that was either sugar-free or contained 7.9% sucrose or 10% honey ad libitum for 52 wk (honey is 21% water). Weight gain was assessed every 1 to 2 wk and food intake was measured every 2 mo. At the completion of the study blood samples were removed for measurement of blood sugar (HbA1c) and a fasting lipid profile. DEXA analyses were then performed to determine body composition and bone mineral densities. Overall weight gain and body fat levels were significantly higher in sucrose-fed rats and similar for those fed honey or a sugar-free diet. HbA1c levels were significantly reduced, and HDL-cholesterol significantly increased, in honey-fed compared with rats fed sucrose or a sugar free diet, but no other differences in lipid profiles were found. No differences in bone mineral density were observed between honey- and sucrose-fed rats, although it was significantly increased in honey-fed rats compared with those fed the sugar-free diet. An evaluation of DVAqua®, a fully-fermented yeast culture, during long-term hatchery rearing of McConaughy strain rainbow trout

Abstract The addition of a proprietary, fully-fermented yeast Saccahromyces cerevisiae culture supplement (DVAqua®, Diamond V Mills, Cedar Rapids, IA, USA) was evaluated during long-term feeding of McConaughy strain rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss. Beginning at initial feeding and continuing for 408 days of hatchery rearing, the trout received either a commercially-manufactured feed or the same feed containing 0.125 g kg,1 DVAqua. This study was conducted at a production level as part of normal (real-world) hatchery operations, with the fish periodically inventoried and moved into different rearing units. Although no rearing-tank replication occurred during the first 54 days of feeding, multiple tanks and raceways were used thereafter. Fish in rearing units receiving DVAqua supplementation exhibited less mortality, particularly during the earlier rearing stages. During the final 177 days of rearing in six raceways, DVAqua-fed McConaughy strain trout were significantly larger and had a significantly improved feed conversion ratio. The overall feed conversion ratio for the entire duration of the study was 1.17 in the fish receiving DVAqua supplementation compared to 1.21 in the control group. Despite the limitations of this study, the use of DVAqua is recommended for McConaughy strain rainbow trout and other less-domesticated, more difficult-to-rear salmonids. [source]


Effects of dietary squid viscera meal on growth and cadmium accumulation in tissues of Japanese seabass, Lateolabrax japonicus (Cuvier 1828)

Abstract Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic environmental pollutant with a long biological half-life and can produce both hepatic and renal injuries in mammals and fish. Squid viscera meal (SVM), an effective attractant for aquatic animals, is widely used as an ingredient in aquafeeds. However, SVM is rich in Cd and its complexes. A study was conducted to evaluate the effects of dietary SVM on the growth and Cd deposition in tissues of Japanese seabass, Lateolabrax japonicus. Three practical diets were formulated to contain 0, 50 and 100 g SVM kg,1 diet, respectively, containing 0.21, 7.26 and 12.08 mg Cd kg,1 diet. Each diet was randomly assigned to triplicate groups of 80 Japanese seabass (mean initial weight, 10.89±0.21 g) in floating sea cages (1.5 × 1.5 × 2.0 m). Fish were fed twice daily (06:30 and 16:30 hours) to satiation for 8 weeks. The results showed that there were no significant differences in fish survival among three dietary treatments, but significant higher specific growth rates (SGR) were observed in the fish fed diets with 50 or 100 g SVM kg,1 diet than that from the control group (P<0.05). The Cd concentrations in the kidney, liver and gill were found in a decreasing order at each treatment, and positively correlated with dietary Cd levels. Fish fed diets with 50 and 100 g SVM kg,1 diet had significantly higher Cd accumulations in the kidney (3.25, 5.85 mg kg,1), liver (0.76, 1.26 mg kg,1) and gill (0.42, 0.58 mg kg,1) compared with the control group (0.82, 0.34 and 0.32 mg kg,1 respectively) (P<0.05). The Cd concentration in fish muscle; however, was undetectable in any treatment. Therefore, based on these results, accumulation of Cd in edible tissue (muscle) of farmed Japanese seabass is not a food safety issue. However, long-term feeding of diets with SVM may result in accumulation of Cd in the kidneys, liver and gills of fish. [source]
