Long Sequences (long + sequence)
Selected AbstractsThe Fortified Site of Leceia (Oeiras) in the Context of the Chalcolithic in Portuguese EstramaduraOXFORD JOURNAL OF ARCHAEOLOGY, Issue 1 2000JoÃo Luís Cardoso Research into the Chalcolithic period in the region of Lower Estremadura, south of Torres Vedras, western Portugal, has generated much new data from fortified sites and cemeteries. The lack, so far, of a thorough overview of this diverse body of information has hindered the definition of the Chalcolithic culture of the region. The economic, social and cultural transformation observed at sites with a long sequence beginning with the Late Neolithic, has never been analysed. The results obtained by the author in one of the most notable sites of the region, the fortified site of Leceia, near the town of Oeiras, are of particular interest. Seventeen excavation campaigns carried out since 1983 have provided a remarkable body of information. The characterization of other previously identified Chalcolithic groups in Portugal allow us to see how the Chalcolithic of Estremadura relates, at a regional level, with the cultural development to the north, the south, the hinterland and the coast. Of major importance to this discussion are the chronometric results obtained in Leceia. For the first time, the 36 radiocarbon dates and their subsequent statistical treatment have allowed us to establish absolute boundaries for the existing successive cultural phases of the Late Neolithic and the Early, Middle and Late Chalcolithic. Although scurvy has been around since the beginning of mankind, it was not until the 16th century that it was recognized as a disease. It took hundreds of years and a long sequence of small advances and missed opportunities to discover its cause. Finally at the beginning of the 20th century and with the help of guinea pigs for testing the experiments, scurvy was identified as a form of malnutrition. This started an exciting race for the isolation, structure determination, and synthesis of vitamin C. As a result, modern industrial synthesis now allows an affordable Vitamin C supply for everyone. This success story due to modern chemistry has made scurvy one of the many diseases that have almost entirely disappeared from our lives. For a given sequence of 3D motion capture data of human body, the 3D markers are first organized into a hierarchy where each node corresponds to a meaningful part of the human body. Then, the motion sequence corresponding to each body part is coded separately. Based on the observation that there is a high degree of spatial and temporal correlation among the 3D marker positions, we strive to identify motion patterns that form a database for each meaningful body part. Thereafter, a sequence of motion capture data can be efficiently represented as a series of motion pattern indices. As a result, higher compression ratio has been achieved when compared with the prior art, especially for long sequences of motion capture data with repetitive motion styles. Another distinction of this work is that it provides means for flexible and intuitive global and local distortion controls. [source] Underlying cognitions in the selection of lottery ticketsJOURNAL OF CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 6 2001Karen K. Hardoon There is evidence that the faulty cognitions underlying an individual's playing behavior maintains and supports their gambling behavior. Sixty undergraduate students completed the South Oaks Gambling Screen (SOGS), a measure to assess pathological gambling, and a questionnaire ascertaining the type and frequency of their gambling activities. Sixteen Loto 6/49 tickets were presented to participants and ranked according to their perceived likelihood of being the winning ticket. The numbers on the tickets were categorized as: long sequences (e.g., 1,2,3,4,5,6), patterns and series in a pseudo-psychological order (e.g., 16,21,26,31,36,41), unbalanced (e.g., six numbers from 1,24 or 25,49), and those appearing to be random (e.g., 11,14,20,29,37,43). Verbal protocols of ticket selections were ranked into eight heuristics. Results revealed that for the entire sample the greatest percentage of tickets chosen for the first four selections were "random" tickets. Further, the most commonly cited reason for selecting and changing a lottery ticket was perceived randomness. The results are discussed with reference to the cognitions used when purchasing lottery tickets. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Clin Psychol 57: 749,763, 2001. [source] New short peptaibols from a marine Trichoderma strainRAPID COMMUNICATIONS IN MASS SPECTROMETRY, Issue 8 2006Mustapha Mohamed-Benkada The production of peptaibols by a marine-related Trichoderma longibrachiatum strain was studied using electrospray ionisation multiple-stage ion trap mass spectrometry (ESI-MSn -IT) and gas chromatography/electron impact mass spectrometry (GC/EI-MS). Two major groups of peptaibols were identified, those with long sequences (20 amino acids) and others with short sequences (11 amino acids). This paper describes the methodology used to establish the sequences of short peptaibols in a mixture without previous individual separation. Nine peptaibols were identified. Among them, eight are new, namely as trichobrachin A I,IV (Aib9 -Pro10 sequence) and as trichobrachin B I,IV (Val9 -Pro10 sequence). Original Pro6 -Val7 and Val9 -Pro10 sequences have to be noted.
