AT&T adds business continuity to the long list of telework's advantages

GLOBAL BUSINESS AND ORGANIZATIONAL EXCELLENCE, Issue 2 2006
Joseph Roitz
AT&T's experience in making telework an essential part of its organizational strategy can serve as a model for other knowledge-based companies looking for new sources of competitive advantage. The promises of telework, reduced real estate costs, productivity gains, higher employee satisfaction and retention, have materialized as measurable returns for AT&T. Hurricane Katrina provided just the latest evidence of another important telework contribution, business continuity, with sizable benefits for the company, its customers, and its employees. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. "A WILLINGNESS TO LISTEN TO EACH SIDE": The Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Review Committee, 1991,2010

MUSEUM ANTHROPOLOGY, Issue 2 2010
C. Timothy McKeown
abstract The 1990 Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act authorized establishment of an advisory committee to carry out a long list of specific duties. Chartered on August 20, 1991, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Review Committee has held 42 meetings over the subsequent 19 years. The review committee's responsibilities include monitoring the summary, inventory, and repatriation process; facilitating the resolution of disputes; compiling an inventory of culturally unidentifiable human remains and recommending specific actions for their disposition; consulting with the Secretary of the Interior in the development of regulations; and submitting an annual report to Congress. This paper examines the review committee's establishment and activities and assesses its effectiveness. [source]

The Secret Lives of Liberals and Conservatives: Personality Profiles, Interaction Styles, and the Things They Leave Behind

POLITICAL PSYCHOLOGY, Issue 6 2008
Dana R. Carney
Although skeptics continue to doubt that most people are "ideological," evidence suggests that meaningful left-right differences do exist and that they may be rooted in basic personality dispositions, that is, relatively stable individual differences in psychological needs, motives, and orientations toward the world. Seventy-five years of theory and research on personality and political orientation has produced a long list of dispositions, traits, and behaviors. Applying a theory of ideology as motivated social cognition and a "Big Five" framework, we find that two traits, Openness to New Experiences and Conscientiousness, parsimoniously capture many of the ways in which individual differences underlying political orientation have been conceptualized. In three studies we investigate the relationship between personality and political orientation using multiple domains and measurement techniques, including: self-reported personality assessment; nonverbal behavior in the context of social interaction; and personal possessions and the characteristics of living and working spaces. We obtained consistent and converging evidence that personality differences between liberals and conservatives are robust, replicable, and behaviorally significant, especially with respect to social (vs. economic) dimensions of ideology. In general, liberals are more open-minded, creative, curious, and novelty seeking, whereas conservatives are more orderly, conventional, and better organized. [source]

Ovarian cancer proteomics: Many technologies one goal

PROTEOMICS - CLINICAL APPLICATIONS, Issue 2 2008
Kothandaraman Narasimhan
Abstract The last decade has seen major changes in the technologies used to identify markers for diagnosing cancer. This review focuses on recent developments on the evolving field of biomarker discovery, and validation techniques using proteomics platforms for ovarian cancer. It is possible now to diagnose various disease conditions using microliter quantities of body fluids. Currently the major developments were made in three distinct areas: (i) protein profiling, (ii) high-throughput validation techniques, and (iii) solid and liquid phase protein microarray platforms for analyzing candidate markers across subclasses and stages of cancers. The recent addition to the long list of technologies is metabolomics using metabolite profiling and informatics-based filtering of information for biomarker discovery of ovarian cancer. Emerging technologies need to address ways to eliminate the limitations posed by the complex dynamic nature of body fluids as well as ways to enrich low-abundance tumor markers if they were to become a successful biomarker discovery tool. These new technologies hold significant promise in identifying more robust markers for ovarian cancer. Since the prevalence of this disease in the population is low, the test must have a high specificity. [source]

Assessing reproductive profiles in female brown mouse lemurs (Microcebus rufus) from Ranomafana National Park, southeast Madagascar, using fecal hormone analysis

AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PRIMATOLOGY, Issue 6 2009
Marina B. Blanco
Abstract Studies on reproductive endocrinology in wild primate populations have greatly increased in the last decades owing to the development of noninvasive techniques that can be applied under field conditions. However, small-bodied nocturnal species are not well represented on the long list of primates surveyed in the wild, and reproductive inferences regarding these animals in their natural habitats have not benefited from direct observations of hormonal changes. We collected fecal samples from female brown mouse lemurs (Microcebus rufus) in a southeastern rainforest of Madagascar in order to determine whether or not fecally excreted steroid levels show a consistent pattern of change during the reproductive season and are a useful complement to reproductive observations in wild-trapped individuals. Initial data show variation in reproductive hormone levels before and after estrus and estimated day of parturition. Elevated levels of excreted estradiol (E2) were observed around the time of estrus, whereas high levels of fecal progesterone (P) were seen during later stages of pregnancy and around parturition. A more complete picture of reproductive profiles in female mouse lemurs, and how they may change over the life span, can be obtained if hormone analyses are used to supplement field observations. Am. Fractional factorial designs for legal psychology

BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES & THE LAW, Issue 1-2 2002
Dennis P. Stolle J.D., Ph.D.
Researchers considering novel or exploratory psycholegal research are often able to easily generate a sizable list of independent variables (IVs) that might influence a measure of interest. Where the research question is novel and the literature is not developed, however, choosing from among a long list of potential variables those worthy of empirical investigation often presents a formidable task. Many researchers may feel compelled by legal psychology's heavy reliance on full-factorial designs to narrow the IVs under investigation to two or three in order to avoid an expensive and unwieldy design involving numerous high-order interactions. This article suggests that fractional factorial designs provide a reasonable alternative to full-factorial designs in such circumstances because they allow the psycholegal researcher to examine the main effects of a large number of factors while disregarding high-order interactions. An introduction to the logic of fractional factorial designs is provided and several examples from the social sciences are presented. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source]

Restless legs syndrome: an early manifestation of Huntington's disease?

ACTA NEUROLOGICA SCANDINAVICA, Issue 4 2009
E. Savva
Background,,, Far from being uniform, Huntington's disease (HD)'s phenotype encompasses a large variety of motor and non-motor symptoms which occur in various combinations in individual patients. Aim,,, To describe an unusual association between restless legs syndrome (RLS) and HD. Methods and results,,, We report a patient with an atypical presentation of genetically demonstrated HD, who developed typical RLS a few years prior to and during the course of HD. Common causes of RLS were excluded and the polysomnography confirmed frequent and severe periodic limb movements during sleep and while awake. Conclusions,,, We propose RLS as an uncommon but early feature of HD in some patients, and suggest adding HD to the already long list of RLS secondary to neurodegenerative conditions. [source]

Patients' knowledge and perceptions of the side-effects of OTC medication

JOURNAL OF CLINICAL PHARMACY & THERAPEUTICS, Issue 4 2002
L. Hughes BPharm PhD MRPharmS
Summary Objective:, To investigate the knowledge of patients with regard to the side-effects of over-the-counter medicines. Method:, This took the form of ethnographic interviews and focus groups. Results:, Patients generally had poor knowledge of the potential side-effects of their medication. However, this appeared not to affect their ability to identify adverse drug reactions (ADRs). A number of the patients had experienced ADRs, and they identified a medicine as the cause because of the timing or unexpected nature of the symptom. The patients obtained information about medicines from many sources, including health care professionals, friends and family. Despite wide availability, patient information leaflets were rarely used by the patients. The leaflets were usually only read if the medicine was new or if a side-effect was experienced. Negative views of the leaflets included poor design and long lists of side-effects. Conclusion:, Accurate information and advice from health care professionals could serve to reassure patients and to ensure they are well informed about the medicines they take. [source]
