In the present experiments, this method was used to search for unique neurons contributing to feeding behavior in the cerebral ganglia of Aplysia kurodai. We mainly explored the neurons whose cell bodies were located in the G cluster and the neuropile region posterior to this cluster on the ventral surface of the cerebral ganglia. When the extract of the food seaweed Ulva was applied to the tentacle-lip region, many neurons stained with a calcium-sensitive dye, Calcium Green-1, showed changes in fluorescence. Some neurons showed rhythmic responses and others showed transient responses, suggesting that these neurons may be partly involved in the feeding circuits. We also identified three motor neurons among these neurons that showed rhythmic fluorescence responses to the taste stimulation. One of them was a motor neuron shortening the anterior tentacle (ATS), and the other two were motor neurons producing lip opening-like (LOG) and closing-like (LCG) movements, respectively. Application of the Ulva extract to the tentacle-lip region induced phase-locked rhythmic firing activity in these motor neurons, suggesting that these neurons may contribute to the rhythmic patterned movements of the anterior tentacles and lips during the ingestion of seaweed. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Neurobiol 55: 299,314, 2003 [source] GENETIC STUDY: Heritability and a genome-wide linkage analysis of a Type II/B cluster construct for cannabis dependence in an American Indian communityADDICTION BIOLOGY, Issue 3 2009Cindy L. Ehlers ABSTRACT Subtyping of substance dependence disorders holds promise for a number of important research areas including phenotyping for genetic studies, characterizing clinical course, and matching treatment and prevention strategies. This study sought to investigate whether a dichotomous construct similar to Babor's Types A/B and Cloninger's Types I/II for alcohol dependence can be identified for cannabis dependence in a Native American sample. In addition, heritability of this construct and its behavior in a genetic linkage analyses were evaluated. Information on cannabis use and dependence symptoms and other psychiatric disorders was obtained using the Semi-Structured Assessment for the Genetics of Alcoholism from a community sample of 606 American Indians. Hierarchical average linkage and K means cluster analysis was used, and a three-cluster solution was found to generate the best separation of variables. Ninety-one per cent of cannabis-dependent participants fell into one of the two subtypes: Type A/I cluster (n = 114, 56%) and Type B/II cluster (n = 70, 35%). Heritability (estimated using Sequential Oligogenic Linkage Analysis Routines) was only significant for the Type B/II cluster (h2 = 0.44, SE = 0.18, P < 0.01). Evidence for linkage was found for the Type B/II cluster (versus no diagnosis) on chromosome 16 [at 139 centimorgans (cM), Log of the Odds (LOD) score = 4.4], and on chromosome 19 (at 74 cM, LOD score = 6.4). Regions of interest for this phenotype (LOD > 1.5) were also located on chromosomes 14, 21, 22. These findings suggest that a Type B/II cannabis dependence phenotype can be identified in this population and that it is in part heritable and linked to areas of the genome identified previously for drug dependence phenotypes in this population as well as in other studies. [source] A Model of Factors Correlated to Homeownership: The Case of UtahFAMILY & CONSUMER SCIENCES RESEARCH JOURNAL, Issue 1 2001Lucy Delgadillo This article examines the relationship between homeownership and socioeconomic, demographic, and market factors in Utah. Units of analyses were census-designated places. The goal was to provide a model that can be replicated by housing specialists and consumer scientists to gain a better understanding of how homeownership (dependent variable) differs from place to place and how this variation relates to socioeconomic index, population density, affordability ratio, and the median value of owner occupied housing units (independent variables). The 1990 data set was analyzed using bivariate and multivariate analyses. Homeownership percentages were regressed on the linear combination of the socioeconomic scale, log of population density, and affordability ratios. Log of population density was the factor that explained most of the variance. The interaction equation slightly improved the explanatory power, accounting for more than 50% of the variance. Malfait Abstract The silicate speciation forms an important aspect of the structure of silicate melts, a subject of interest to both the earth- and materials science communities. In this study, the Qn speciation of binary cesium silicate glasses was studied by Raman spectroscopy. A method to extract the equilibrium constant from a set of Raman spectra is presented, and the least-squares optimization algorithm is given (in Supporting Information). Log(K), the equilibrium constant of the speciation reaction, 2Q3 = Q4 + Q2, equals ,2.72 ± 0.11 at the glass transition. The former three models, which are based on fragment methods, showed better accuracy (r=0.87,0.91) than SLOGP, which is based on the atom contribution method and VLOGP and COSMO thermo, which are property-based models. The trends of prediction by each model are described based on chemical structure and molecular weight. For all six models, several compounds had a significantly greater calculated log,P value than the experimental log,P value. It is interesting to note that most of these compounds had ionic moieties. [source] Herbicidal action of 2-hydroxy-3-alkyl-1,4-naphthoquinonesPEST MANAGEMENT SCIENCE (FORMERLY: PESTICIDE SCIENCE), Issue 3 2002Philip J Jewess Abstract The main mode of herbicidal activity of 2-hydroxy-3-alkyl-1,4-naphthoquinones is shown to be inhibition of photosystem II (PSII). The herbicidal and in vitro activities have been measured and correlated with their (Log)octanol/water partition coefficients (Log Ko/w). The length of the 3- n -alkyl substituent for optimal activity differed between herbicidal and in vitro activity. The maximum in vitro activity was given by the nonyl to dodecyl homologues (Log Ko/w between 6.54 and 8.12), whereas herbicidal activity peaked with the n -hexyl compound (Log Ko/w,=,4.95). The effect of chain branching was also investigated using isomeric pentyl analogues substituted at position 3. All exhibited similar levels of in vitro activities but herbicidal activities differed, albeit moderately, with the exception of one analogue that was much less phytotoxic. Other modes of action were also investigated using two representative compounds. They did not show any activity on photosystem I or mitochondrial complex I, or generate toxic oxygen radicals by redox cycling reactions. In vitro activity against mitochondrial complex III was only exhibited by 2-hydroxy-3-alkyl-1,4-naphthoquinones, indicating that the 2-acetoxy compounds act as pro-insecticides. Good correlation was observed between in vivo activity against the two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae and inhibition of complex III isolated from blowfly flight muscle. Both hydroxy and acetoxy analogues of individual compounds exhibited similar levels of in vivo activity with optimum activity for analogues with Log Ko/w values of 7,8. In contrast, the acetoxy derivatives showed superior in vivo activity against the tobacco whitefly, Bemisia tabaci. Complex III isolated from whitefly was optimally inhibited by hydroxy analogues with lower Log Ko/w values (6.0,6.5) and was also more sensitive than the blowfly enzyme to all the compounds tested. © 2002 Society of Chemical Industry [source] A pilot respiratory health assessment of nail technicians: Symptoms, lung function, and airway inflammation ,,AMERICAN JOURNAL OF INDUSTRIAL MEDICINE, Issue 11 2009Susan R. Reutman PhD Abstract Background Recent surveys suggest nail technicians, particularly artificial nail applicators, have increased respiratory symptoms and asthma risk. Methods We examined lung function (n,=,62) and a marker of airway inflammation, i.e., exhaled nitric oxide (ENO) (n,=,43), in a subset of nail technician and control participants in a pilot health assessment. Results Bivariate analysis of technicians demonstrated that job latency was inversely correlated with FEV1 percent predicted (FEV1PP) (r,=,,0.34, P,=,0.03) and FVCPP (r,=,,0.32, P,=,0.05). Acrylic gel contact hours were inversely correlated with FEV1PP (r,=,,0.38, P,=,0.02) and FVCPP (r,=,,0.47, P,=,0.003). Current smoking was inversely and significantly (P,,,0.05) associated with ENO in bivariate analysis. Log 10 ENO levels were directly correlated with job latency (P,=,0.012) and gel nail application (P,=,0.026) in multivariable analyses. [source] Conducting nanocomposites of polyacrylamide with acetylene black and polyanilinePOLYMER COMPOSITES, Issue 4 2009Pramod Kumar Verma A conducting nanocomposite of polyacrylamide (PAA) with acetylene black was prepared via Na2AsO3 -K2CrO4 redox initiated polymerization of acrylamide in water containing a suspension of acetylene black. FTIR analyses confirmed the presence of PAA in the nanocomposites. The composite possessed lower thermal stability than AB and exhibited three stages of decomposition upto 430°C. DSC thermogram revealed three endotherms due to minor thermal degradation (at ,100°C), melting and decomposition (at ,230°C) and major decomposition (at ,430°C). TEM analyses indicated the formation of globular composite particles with sizes in 30,70 nm range. In contrast to the very low conductivity of the base polymer the composite showed a dramatic increase in conductivity (0.19,6.0 S/cm) depending upon AB loading. Log (conductivity) ,1/T plot showed a change in slope at ,127°C indicating the manifestation of an intrinsic conductivity region and an impurity conductivity region. The activation energy for conduction as estimated from the slope of region I was 0.008 eV/mol. The C,V plot was linear showing a metallic behavior. For comparison in conductivity PAA-polyaniline composite was also prepared which however displayed much lower conductivity values. POLYM. Syrjala Abstract Objective: Cancer survivors report deficits in social functioning even years after completing treatment. Commonly used measures of social functioning provide incomplete understanding of survivors' social behavior. This study describes social activities of survivors and evaluates the psychometric properties of the Social Activity Log (SAL) in a cohort of long-term survivors of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) for cancer. Methods: One hundred and two (5,20 year) survivors completed the SAL, Short-Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36), and other patient-reported outcomes. Principal components analysis determined the factor structure of the SAL along with correlations and regressions to establish validity. Results: Principal component analysis yielded three factors in the SAL: ,non-contact events' (e.g. telephone calls), ,regular events' (e.g. played cards), and ,special events' (e.g. concerts), which explained 59% of the total variance. The SAL possessed good internal consistency (Cronbach's ,=0.82). SF-36 social function and SAL were moderately correlated (r=0.31). In linear regressions, physical function and depression explained 16% of the variance in the SAL (P<0.001), while physical function, depression, and fatigue predicted 55% of the variance in SF-36 social function (P<0.001). Conclusions: Results support the use of the SAL as a measure of social activity in cancer survivors who received HSCT. Although the SAL is designed to measure social behaviors, SF-36 social function assesses subjective experience and is more strongly associated with depression and fatigue. [source] The incommensurately modulated crystal structure of ,-Pb2BiVO6: interpretation of the phase transition ,,,,, and conduction properties of related materialsACTA CRYSTALLOGRAPHICA SECTION B, Issue 4 2009Pascal Roussel A new polymorph of Pb2BiVO6 was prepared under ambient conditions and its crystal structure was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The phase transitions ,,, and ,,, were identified in the mother phase; the high-temperature form ,-Pb2BiVO6 eventually decomposes at 753,K to a mixture of Pb4BiVO8 and the high-temperature form of PbBiVO5 before showing recombination at 923,K. ,-Pb2BiVO6 has an incommensurate monoclinic modulated structure. This crystal structure is twinned and complementary structural investigations of a powder sample of ,-Pb2BiVO6 by TEM diffraction studies confirmed the lattice and incommensurate modulation character. Berthier MD Objective We conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study of both memantine and constraint-induced aphasia therapy (CIAT) on chronic poststroke aphasia followed by an open-label extension phase. Methods Patients were randomized to memantine (20mg/day) or placebo alone during 16 weeks, followed by combined drug treatment with CIAT (weeks 16,18), drug treatment alone (weeks 18,20), and washout (weeks 20,24), and finally, an open-label extension phase of memantine (weeks 24,48). After baseline evaluations, clinical assessments were done at two end points (weeks 16 and 18), and at weeks 20, 24, and 48. Outcome measures were changes in the Western Aphasia Battery-Aphasia Quotient and the Communicative Activity Log. Results Twenty-eight patients were included, and 27 completed both treatment phases. The memantine group showed significantly better improvement on Western Aphasia Battery-Aphasia Quotient compared with the placebo group while the drug was taken (week 16, p = 0.002; week 18, p = 0.0001; week 20, p = 0.005) and at the washout assessment (p = 0.041). A significant increase in Communicative Activity Log was found in favor of memantine-CIAT relative to placebo-CIAT (week 18, p = 0.040). CIAT treatment led to significant improvement in both groups (p = 0.001), which was even greater under additional memantine treatment (p = 0.038). Beneficial effects of memantine were maintained in the long-term follow-up evaluation, and patients who switched to memantine from placebo experienced a benefit (p = 0.02). Interpretation Both memantine and CIAT alone improved aphasia severity, but best outcomes were achieved combining memantine with CIAT. Penman Abstract We assessed complementary log,log (CLL) regression as an alternative statistical model for estimating multivariable-adjusted prevalence ratios (PR) and their confidence intervals. Using the delta method, we derived an expression for approximating the variance of the PR estimated using CLL regression. Then, using simulated data, we examined the performance of CLL regression in terms of the accuracy of the PR estimates, the width of the confidence intervals, and the empirical coverage probability, and compared it with results obtained from log,binomial regression and stratified Mantel,Haenszel analysis. Within the range of values of our simulated data, CLL regression performed well, with only slight bias of point estimates of the PR and good confidence interval coverage. In addition, and importantly, the computational algorithm did not have the convergence problems occasionally exhibited by log,binomial regression. The technique is easy to implement in SAS (SAS Institute, Cary, NC), and it does not have the theoretical and practical issues associated with competing approaches. CLL regression is an alternative method of binomial regression that warrants further assessment. Malope Laboratory tests used in the diagnosis of iron status lack specificity in defining iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) and anaemia of inflammation (AI). The serum transferrin receptor (sTfR) may provide more information in this regard. The iron status of 561 pre-school children was determined and classified using the conventional measurements. The value of the concentration of sTfR, the ratio of sTfR (µg/ml) to LogSF (µg/l) (TfR-Index), and the Log of the ratio of sTfR (µg/l) to SF (µg/l) , (LogTfR:Fer ratio), in the classification of the iron status were determined by comparing their distributions across the classification of iron status. Although there were significant differences in sTfR and TfR-Index across the categories of iron status, there was considerable overlap. All subjects with iron deficiency had LogTfR:Fer ratio >,2·55, whereas in all subjects classified as AI it was < 2·55, thus clearly separating the two. The LogTfR:Fer ratio was not able to exclude IDA in the presence of inflammation. However, in cases of combined IDA and AI the LogTfR:Fer ratio was <,2·55 but increased to >,2·55 after resolution of the inflammation. This novel method of calculating the LogTfR:Fer ratio may provide a more precise classification of the iron status of children. [source] 13 Knowledge Translation ShiftACADEMIC EMERGENCY MEDICINE, Issue 2008Rawle Seupaul Health care providers have demonstrated difficulty in adopting the latest information into their clinical practice patterns. This gap in "Knowledge Translation" (KT) is currently under broad discussion within the medical community and was the focus of SAEM's Consensus Conference in 2007. In an effort to bridge this gap, we implemented a novel "KT shift" for our PGY-2 residents. PGY-2 emergency medicine (EM) residents are required to work a nine hour KT shift during their scheduled EM rotation at one of two large urban training emergency departments (EDs). This shift has reduced patient responsibilities to allow for the development of clinical queries that are answered by searching for the best evidence to be applied to patient care. This process is summarized on a "KT Shift Log" that records the PICO question, databases searched, and level of evidence found to answer clinical questions. KT shift log sheets and search strategies are reviewed by EM faculty with expertise in evidence-based medicine and KT principles. We believe that the implementation of a KT shift will improve residents' ability to obtain high quality evidence to answer real-time clinical questions. This may serve as an important measure in closing the knowledge to practice gap. [source] Bird species numbers in an archipelago of reeds at Lake Velence, HungaryGLOBAL ECOLOGY, Issue 6 2000András Báldi Abstract 1,Bird species numbers were studied on 109 reed islands at Lake Velence, Hungary, in the 1993 and 1994 breeding seasons. The aim was to describe and account for the abundance and distribution patterns of the bird species. 2,It was expected that an exponential model would fit the calculated species,area curves. However, for the 1993 data, both the power function (LogS ~ LogArea) and the exponential (S ~ LogArea) models did so, while the power function, exponential and linear (S ~ A) models fitted the curves for the 1994 data. 3,The results showed that the pattern was not random: a collection of small islands held more species than a few large islands with the same total area. 4,The relative species richness of small islands is a result of the preference of most common passerine bird species for the edges of reed islands. Most individuals were found in the first 5 m of the reedbed, and no edge avoidance was detected on a local spatial scale. Large, rarer species (e.g. Great White Egret), however, were found to be dependent on large reed islands. 5,Comparison of results with two other studies on bird communities of reed islands revealed that the type of landscape matrix (e.g. deep water, shallow water or agricultural lands) among reed patches significantly influences bird communities. Deep water was dominated by grebes and coot, shallow water by reed-nesting passerines, and farmed areas by reed- and bush-nesting passerines. [source] Process Considerations for Trolling Borehole Flow LogsGROUND WATER MONITORING & REMEDIATION, Issue 3 2006Phil L. Oberlander Horizontal hydraulic conductivity with depth is often understood only as a depth-integrated property based on pumping tests or estimated from geophysical logs and the lithology. A more explicit method exists for determining hydraulic conductivity over small vertical intervals by collecting borehole flow measurements while the well is being pumped. Borehole flow rates were collected from 15 deep monitoring wells on the Nevada Test Site and the Nevada Test and Training Range while continuously raising and lowering a high-precision impeller borehole flowmeter. Repeated logging passes at different logging speeds and pumping rates typically provided nine unique flow logs for each well. Over 60 km of borehole flow logs were collected at a 6.1-cm vertical resolution. Processing these data necessitated developing a methodology to delete anomalous values, smooth small-scale flow variations, combine multiple borehole flow logs, characterize measurement uncertainty, and determine the interval-specific lower limit to flow rate quantification. There are decision points in the data processing where judgment and ancillary analyses are needed to extract subtle hydrogeologic information. The analysis methodology indicates that processed measurements from a high-precision trolling impeller flowmeter in a screened well can confidently detect changes in borehole flow rate of ,0.7% of the combined trolling and borehole flow rate. An advantage of trolling the flowmeter is that the impeller is nearly always spinning as it is raised and lowered in the well and borehole flow rates can be measured at lower values than if measurements were taken while the flowmeter was held at a fixed depth. Hayes Abstract 1,Abiotic conditions within logs can affect pine engraver Ips pini (Say) reproductive success, and slash management techniques have been developed that exploit these relationships to reduce brood production. In the present study, we investigated the affect of sunlight exposure on phloem temperature and moisture in logs of two diameters and the subsequent effects on pine engraver reproduction. 2,Logs, 30 cm in length, with diameters of 10 and 15 cm, were cut, left in the field for natural colonization by I pini, and then placed in an open meadow and under shade cloth, providing 27% and 66% shade, until offspring beetles had left the logs. Phloem temperature and moisture were recorded over the duration of the experiment and, at the end of the field experiment, logs were dissected and galleries were measured to gauge beetle reproductive success. 3,As sunlight exposure increased, phloem temperatures increased and potentially lethal temperatures were often reached in the high-sunlight exposure but seldom in the low-sunlight. Smaller diameter logs had drier phloem than larger diameter logs. All logs dried with time but sunlight level did not affect desiccation rates. Ips pini preferred attacking larger logs and the bottom side of logs. Sunlight exposure had a significant effect on net reproductive success in smaller diameter logs, with very little net reproductive success in high-sunlight exposed logs, and the highest reproductive success was found in small diameter logs in the low-sunlight treatments. 4,Management implications of these results are discussed. [source] Patient Problems, Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Interventions, Time and Contacts Among Five Patient GroupsJOURNAL OF NURSING SCHOLARSHIP, Issue 1 2003Dorothy Brooten Purpose: To describe patient problems and APN interventions in each of five clinical trials and to establish links among patient problems, APN interventions, APN time and number of contacts, patient outcomes, and health care costs. Design and Methods: Analysis of 333 interaction logs created by APNs during five randomized controlled trials: (a) very low birthweight infants (n=39); (b) women with unplanned cesarean birth (n=61), (c) high-risk pregnancy (n=44), and (d) hysterectomy (n=53); and (e) elders with cardiac medical and surgical diagnoses (n=139). Logs containing recordings of all APN interactions with participants, APN time and type of patient contact were content analyzed with the smallest phrase or sentence representing a "unit." These units were then classified using the Omaha Classification System to determine patient problems and APN interventions. Groups were compared concerning total amount of APN time, number of contacts per patient, and mean length of time per APN contact. All studies were conducted in the United States. Findings: Groups with greater mean APN time and contacts per patient had greater improvements in patients' outcomes and greater health care cost savings. Of the 150,131 APN interventions, surveillance was the predominant APN function in all five patient groups. Health teaching, guidance, and counseling was the second most frequent category of APN intervention in four of the five groups. In all five groups, treatments and procedures accounted for < 1% of total APN interventions. Distribution of patient problems (N=150,131) differed across groups reflecting the health care problems common to the group. Conclusions: Dose of APN time and contacts makes a difference in improving patient outcomes and reducing health care costs. Skills needed by APNs in providing transitional care include well-developed skills in assessing, teaching, counseling, communicating, collaborating, knowing health behaviors, negotiating systems, and having condition-specific knowledge about different patient problems. Since many wood-living forest species are influenced by the dynamics of coarse woody debris (CWD), information about the spatial pattern of CWD under natural conditions is essential to understand species distributions. In this study we examined the spatial pattern of downed logs and wood-decaying fungi in an old-growth boreal Picea abies forest in northwestern Sweden that is governed by gap-phase dynamics. The spatial pattern of wood-decaying fungi was studied to draw conclusions about species dispersal abilities. A total of 684 logs with a diameter > 10 cm were mapped and analysed with Ripley's K -function. The distribution of all logs taken together displayed a significant aggregated pattern up to 45 m. The different decay stages also deviated from random expectations. Fairly fresh logs and logs in the middle decay stage were clumped up to about 25 and 35 m respectively, and late decayed logs aggregated up to 95 m. Logs with diameters from 10,29 cm were aggregated up to 25 m, whereas logs ,30 cm diameter were randomly distributed. The result suggests that gap-dynamics do have an impact on the spatial pattern of the CWD, creating fine-scale clumping. The random distribution of large logs may result from the slightly regular spacing of large living trees. The spatial patterns of 16 species (n > 20) of wood-decaying fungi were analysed with Ripley's K -function. Three patterns were aggregated, for Gloeophyllum sepiarium, Coniophora olivacea and Vesiculomyces citrinus. These results indicate that the distribution of most species at the stand level is generally not influenced by dispersal limitations. [source] Reproductive biology of the onychophoran Euperipatoides rowelliJOURNAL OF ZOOLOGY, Issue 4 2000Paul Sunnucks Abstract The reproductive biology of the ovoviviparous peripatus Euperipatoides rowelli was investigated from field collections and laboratory cultures. The sexes have different demographics. The frequency distribution of individual weight is essentially L-shaped in females, but closer to normality for males: thus the sexes must exhibit different patterns of growth and/or mortality. Males are generally much smaller and rarer than females. The primary sex ratio seems to be 1:1 with equal investment in the sexes, while the tertiary ratio is highly female-biased. Logs with fewer individuals tend to be male-biased while well-populated logs tend to be female-biased. Males mature at 15,30% of the bodyweight of mature females. The weight frequency distribution of males without developed sperm in their tracts is strongly skewed to the lower weights, while that of males with sperm is more normally distributed, indicating that sperm production occurs as soon in life as possible. Males mature in their first year of life, if growth rates in culture may be extrapolated to the wild. In contrast to this rapid maturity in males, females may mature as late as their second or third years. Most mature females, and many prior to maturity, carry sperm in their spermathecae. After maturity, there is an approximately linear relationship between body mass and number of developing embryos. Reproduction in E. rowelli is significantly seasonal despite high individual variance, with a major bout of parturition in November,December (summer). A female can harbour one developed and one undeveloped batch of embryos in each uterus. Excesses of developed embryos in one uterus are counterbalanced by deficits of undeveloped ones, indicating that females can use their paired reproductive tracts independently. Individual females in culture can experience episodes of parturition approx. 6 months apart without re-mating, thus gestation may be 6 months or more. Sperm in spermathecae remain capable of vigorous swimming for at least 9.5 months. FERGUSON Abstract Using a sample of UK firms for the period 1996-98, we provide empirical evidence on the relation between nonaudit services (NAS) purchase and three proxies for earnings management: (1) the likelihood that client firm accounting practices during the sample period were publicly criticized or subject to regulatory investigation; (2) the likelihood that client firms were required to restate prior financial statements or adjust current year results upon adoption of Financial Reporting Standard (FRS) No. 12, which was intended to curb opportunistic use of provisions; and (3) the mean absolute value of client discretionary working capital accruals over the sample period. The level of NAS purchase is measured, alternatively, as (1) the ratio of nonaudit to total auditor fees, (2) the natural log of NAS fees, and (3) the decile rank of a particular client's NAS fees given all NAS fees received by the audit firm practice office. With one exception, we find that all three measures of earnings management are positively and significantly associated with the three measures of NAS purchase. Park Abstract Aims, To investigate the effect of two common ATP-binding cassette transporter 1 (ABCA1) polymorphisms (rs4149263 and rs2020927) on atherogenic dyslipidaemia in Korean Type 2 diabetic patients who were treated with rosiglitazone. Patients and methods, Two hundred and fifty-six patients with Type 2 diabetes who had never previously received peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-,) agonists or lipid-lowering treatment were treated with 4 mg of rosiglitazone daily for 12 weeks without any adjustment to their glucose-lowering regimen. The primary outcome was the change in atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), calculated as log [triglyceride (mmol/l)/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (mmol/l)], before and after rosiglitazone treatment. The effect of rosiglitazone on the change in AIP was compared across the ABCA1 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) rs41429263 and rs2020927. Results, Before adjustment, the change in AIP at 12 weeks was significantly different across the rs4149263 genotypes [median (interquartile range): ,0.05 (,0.21, 0.09) for TT; 0.02 (,0.09, 0.17) for TC; and 0.11 (0.03, 0.25) for CC; P = 0.003], but not across the rs2020927 [,0.04 (,0.18, 0.10) for TT; 0.03 (,0.17, 0.15) for TC; and ,0.03 (,0.13, 0.10) for CC; P = 0.401]. After controlling for age, gender and duration of diabetes, the presence of the C-allele was significantly associated with an increase in AIP by 0.13 [95% confidence interval (CI), 0.04,0.21; P = 0.003]. This association did not change significantly when body mass index and pretreatment metabolic parameters were additionally controlled for (the change in AIP: 0.14; 95% CI, 0.04,0.24; P = 0.007). Velmurugan Abstract Objective The objective of this study was to investigate the association of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels with intimal medial thickness (IMT) in Type 2 diabetic patients in south India. Study design We studied 587 consecutive Type 2 diabetic patients at the M.V. Diabetes Specialities Centre, Chennai. The mean age of the study group was 55 ± 10 years and 71.2% were males. IMT of the right common carotid artery was determined using high-resolution B mode ultrasonography. Lp(a) levels were measured using ELISA. Since the frequency distribution of Lp(a) was skewed, Lp(a) values were log transformed and the geometric mean was used for statistical analysis. The tertiles of IMT were determined to analyse the association of Lp(a) and other factors with IMT. Result The mean Lp(a) level in the study patients was 18.9 ± 3.1 mg/dl (geometric mean ± sd) and the mean IMT of the study subjects was 0.93 ± 0.19 mm (mean ± sd). The prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis (defined as IMT > 1.1 mm) among subjects with elevated Lp(a) levels > 20 mg/dl was significantly higher compared with those with Lp(a) levels , 20 mg/dl (26.9% vs. 16.3%, P = 0.003). Lp(a) levels increased with increase in tertiles of IMT (anova, P < 0.05). Pearson correlation analysis of carotid IMT with other cardiovascular risk factors revealed strong correlation of IMT with age (P < 0.0001), duration of diabetes (P < 0.0001), systolic blood pressure (P < 0.0001), diastolic blood pressure (P = 0.006), LDL-cholesterol (P = 0.023), HbA1c (P = 0.017) and Lp(a) (P < 0.0001). Multiple logistic regression analysis showed age (P = 0.010), LDL-cholesterol (P = 0.032) and Lp(a) (P = 0.021) to be associated with carotid atherosclerosis. The specific species group analysed may affect their applicability. We asked if species,area curves constructed from extensive databases of various sectors of natural resource administration can provide insights into large-scale conservation of boreal forest biodiversity if the analyses are restricted only to red-listed species. Location, Finland, northern Europe. Methods, Our data included 12,645 records of 219 red-listed Coleoptera and Fungi from the whole of Finland. The forest data also covered the entire country, 202,761 km2. The units of species,area analyses were 224 municipalities where the red-listed forest species have been observed. We performed a hierarchical partitioning analysis to reveal the relative importance of different potential explanatory variables. Based on the results, for all red-listed species, species associated with coniferous trees and for Fungi, the area of economically over-aged forests explained the best the variation in data. For species associated with deciduous trees and Coleoptera, the forest area explained better variation in data than the area of old forests. In the subsequent log,log species,area regression analyses, we used the best variables as the explanatory variable for each species group. Results, There was a strong relationship between the number of all red-listed species and the area of old forests remaining, with a z -value of 0.45. The area explained better the number of species associated with conifer trees and Fungi than the number of species associated with deciduous trees and Coleoptera. Main conclusions, The high z -values of species,area curves indicate that the remaining old-growth patches constitute a real archipelago for the conifer-associated red-listed species, since lower values had been expected if the surrounding habitat matrix were a suitable habitat for the species analysed. Singer MD Abstract Background: Low-risk emergency department (ED) patients with chest pain (CP) are often transported by nurses to monitored beds on telemetry monitoring, diverting valuable resources from the ED and delaying transport. Objectives: To test the hypothesis that transporting low-risk CP patients off telemetry monitoring is safe. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of a prospective, observational cohort of ED patients with low-risk chest pain (no active chest pain, normal or nondiagnostic electrocardiogram, normal initial troponin I) admitted to a non,intensive care unit monitored bed who were transported off telemetry monitor by nonclinical personnel. A protocol allowing transportation of low-risk CP patients off telemetry monitoring to a monitored bed was developed, and an ongoing daily log of patients transported off telemetry was maintained for the occurrence of any adverse events en route to the floor. Adverse events requiring treatment included dysrhythmias, hypotension, syncope, and cardiac arrest. The study population included patients who presented during September,October 2004, whose data were abstracted from the medical records using standardized methodology. A subset of 10% of the medical records were reviewed by a second investigator for interrater reliability. Death, syncope, resuscitation, and dysrhythmias during transport or immediately on arrival to the floor were the outcomes measured. Descriptive statistics and confidence intervals (CIs) were used in data analysis. Results: During the study period, 425 patients had CP of potentially ischemic origin, of whom 322 (75.8%) were low risk and met the inclusion criteria and were transported off monitors. Their mean (±standard deviation) age was 58.3 (±16.0) years; 48.1% were female. During transport from the ED, there was no patient with any adverse events requiring treatment and there was no death (95% CI = 0% to 0.93%). Conclusions: Transportation of low-risk ED chest pain patients off telemetry monitoring by nonclinical personnel to the floor appears safe. This may reduce diversion of ED nurses from the ED, helping to alleviate nursing shortages. [source] Regional analysis of bedrock stream long profiles: evaluation of Hack's SL form, and formulation and assessment of an alternative (the DS form)EARTH SURFACE PROCESSES AND LANDFORMS, Issue 5 2007Geoff Goldrick Abstract The equilibrium form of the fluvial long profile has been used to elucidate a wide range of aspects of landscape history including tectonic activity in tectonic collision zones, and in continental margin and other intraplate settings, as well as other base-level changes such as due to sealevel fluctuations. The Hack SL form of the long profile, which describes a straight line on a log,normal plot of elevation (normal) versus distance (logarithmic), is the equilibrium long profile form that has been most widely used in such studies; slope,area analysis has also been used in recent years. We show that the SL form is a special case of a more general form of the equilibrium long profile (here called the DS form) that can be derived from the power relationship between stream discharge and downstream distance, and the dependence of stream incision on stream power. The DS form provides a better fit than the SL form to river long profiles in an intraplate setting in southeastern Australia experiencing low rates of denudation and mild surface uplift. We conclude that, if an a priori form of the long profile is to be used for investigations of regional landscape history, the DS form is preferable. In particular, the DS form in principle enables equilibrium steepening due to an increase in channel substrate lithological resistance (parallel shift in the DS plot) to be distinguished from disequilibrium steepening due to long profile rejuvenation (disordered outliers on the DS plot). Slope,area analysis and the slope,distance (DS) approach outlined here are complementary approaches, reflecting the close relationship between downstream distance and downstream catchment area. Malamud Abstract Landslides are generally associated with a trigger, such as an earthquake, a rapid snowmelt or a large storm. The landslide event can include a single landslide or many thousands. The frequency,area (or volume) distribution of a landslide event quanti,es the number of landslides that occur at different sizes. We examine three well-documented landslide events, from Italy, Guatemala and the USA, each with a different triggering mechanism, and ,nd that the landslide areas for all three are well approximated by the same three-parameter inverse-gamma distribution. For small landslide areas this distribution has an exponential ,roll-over' and for medium and large landslide areas decays as a power-law with exponent -2·40. One implication of this landslide distribution is that the mean area of landslides in the distribution is independent of the size of the event. We also introduce a landslide-event magnitude scale mL = log(NLT), with NLT the total number of landslides associated with a trigger. If a landslide-event inventory is incomplete (i.e. smaller landslides are not included), the partial inventory can be compared with our landslide probability distribution, and the corresponding landslide-event magnitude inferred. This technique can be applied to inventories of historical landslides, inferring the total number of landslides that occurred over geologic time, and how many of these have been erased by erosion, vegetation, and human activity. We have also considered three rockfall-dominated inventories, and ,nd that the frequency,size distributions differ substantially from those associated with other landslide types. We suggest that our proposed frequency,size distribution for landslides (excluding rockfalls) will be useful in quantifying the severity of landslide events and the contribution of landslides to erosion. [source] Estimation of strength reduction factors via normalized pseudo-acceleration response spectrumEARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING AND STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS, Issue 6 2007Debasis Karmakar Abstract Estimation of design forces in ductility-based earthquake-resistant design continues to be carried out with the application of response modification factors on elastic design spectra, and it remains interesting to explore how best to estimate strength reduction factors (SRFs) for a design situation. This paper considers the relatively less explored alternative of modelling SRF spectrum via a given response spectrum. A new model is proposed to estimate the SRF spectrum in terms of a pseudo-spectral acceleration (PSA) spectrum and ductility demand ratio with the help of two coefficients. The proposed model is illustrated for an elasto-plastic oscillator, in case of 10 recorded accelerograms and three ductility ratios. The proposed model is convenient and is able to predict SRF spectrum reasonably well, particularly at periods up to 1.0 s. Coefficients of the proposed model may also be determined in case of a given design spectrum when there is uncertainty in SRF spectrum due to uncertainty in temporal characteristics of the ground motion. This is illustrated with the help of 474 accelerograms recorded in western U.S.A. and different scaled PSA spectra. It is shown that probabilistic estimates may be obtained in this situation for SRF spectrum by assuming the error residuals to be log normally distributed with period-dependent parameters.
