Accuracy of Linear Measurement Provided by Cone Beam Computed Tomography to Assess Bone Quantity in the Posterior Maxilla: A Human Cadaver Study

ABSTRACT Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess, for implant placement in the posterior maxilla, the accuracy of linear measurements provided by cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) using an image intensifier tube and television (TV) chain as an X-ray detector despite a loss of contrast resolution. The NewTom® 9000 (Quantitative Radiology, Verona, Italy) was used to explore the posterior maxilla. Materials and Methods: Fourteen measurements were taken in three dry maxillaries. On every anatomical site, three fiducial markers were placed on the bony crest to define a plane. Dry maxillaries were submitted to CBCT imaging examination. The maxillaries were then sawn according to the previously defined planes, and bone height and width were assessed using a caliper. The same measurements were taken on images. Results: Clinical analysis demonstrated no difference between real measurements and image measurements. Conclusions: Although cadaver bone density may not correspond to the density of vital bone, this in vitro study indicates that CBCT images provided by technique using image intensifier tube and TV chain as an X-ray detector are reliable to define the bone volume of the posterior maxilla for the purpose of planning the implant axis. Mandibular Morphology as an Indicator of Human Subadult Age: Interlandmark Approaches,

Abstract:, The dentition is widely recognized as the set of developmental markers that appear to show the least variability against chronological age; these markers are thus widely used in forensic anthropological investigations. As a possible alternative, we investigate here the potential of mandibular morphology as a developmental marker for estimating age at death in subadults. The sample analyzed comprises 79 known age and sex subadult individuals of South African Bantu and African American origin. Linear measurements of ramus height were obtained from the mathematical conversion of three-dimensional landmark data. A series of regression analyses were then performed to predict age by using the measurement of ramus height; results were cross-validated using a jackknife procedure. Our results show that ramus height can be used to predict age in the subadult skeleton with accuracy, closely approaching that of standards based on the dentition (standard error rates are between ±1.1 years and ±2.4 years). A Hand-Carried Personal Ultrasound Device for Rapid Evaluation of Left Ventricular Function: Use After Limited Echo Training

A hand-carried personal ultrasound device (HCPUD) may be used for rapid cardiac screening by physicians with limited echo training. Our objective was to determine the accuracy of rapid HCPUD evaluation of left ventricular (LV) size and function when used by a Cardiology Fellow. Forty-five patients underwent an HCPUD exam using a 2.4-kg device with a 2- to 4-MHz curved transducer and color power Doppler (SonoSite). The results were compared with sonographer-performed and echocardiographer-interpreted exams using conventional equipment. The HCPUD exam lasted 6 ± 2 minutes. There was 100% agreement between HCPUD and conventional echo on qualitative assessment of LV systolic function. Comparing the HCPUD and conventional linear measurements of left ventricular end-diastolic dimension (LVEDD) and of interventricular septal (IVS) thickness: LVEDD is HCPUD = 0.94 conventional ,0.2,r = 0.82, P < 0.0001; IVS is HCPUD= 0.59conventional+0.6, r = 0.69, P < 0.0001. Thus, an HCPUD can effectively be used after limited training to rapidly screen for qualitative abnormalities of LV systolic function. Craniofacial morphology, dental occlusion, tooth eruption, and dental maturity in boys of short stature with or without growth hormone deficiency

The aim of this project was to study the craniofacial morphology, dental occlusion, dental maturation and tooth eruption in short-statured boys with growth hormone secretion ranging from low to high. The measurements from lateral and postero-anterior cephalograms, orthopantomograms and plaster models were used. Almost all linear measurements of the facial structures were significantly smaller. A disproportionate growth in the cranial base structures as well as in the jaws resulted in facial retrognathia, a proportionately smaller posterior than anterior facial height, and a steep vertical inclination of the mandible. Dental crowding was more common and the overbite was small. Dental maturity and tooth eruption were delayed 1.2 and 1.3 yr, respectively. No significant differences between the idiopathic short-statured and the growth hormone-deficient group in any of the above-mentioned variables were found. It can be concluded that although most of the cephalometric variables measured differed significantly from the average, the facial appearance of the boys is not conspicuous and is of minor clinical importance. However, the short-statured boys might be in greater need of orthodontic treatment due to the higher percentage of dental crowding. [source]


The effects of muscular dystrophy on the craniofacial shape of Mus musculus

Abstract Skeletal anomalies are common in patients with muscular dystrophy, despite an absence of mutations to genes that specifically direct skeletogenesis. In order to understand these anomalies further, we examined two strains of muscular dystrophy (laminin- and merosin-deficient) relative to controls, to determine how the weakened muscle forces affected skull shape in a mouse model. Shape was characterized with geometric morphometric techniques, improving upon the limited analytical power of the standard linear measurements. Through these techniques, we document the specific types of cranial skeletal deformation produced by the two strains, each with individual shape abnormalities. The mice with merosin deficiency (with an earlier age of onset) developed skulls with more deformation, probably related to the earlier ontogenetic timing of disease onset. Future examinations of these mouse models may provide insight regarding the impact of muscular forces and the production and maintenance of craniofacial integration and modularity. [source]


A precise water displacement method for estimating egg volume

ABSTRACT Relationships between egg volume and an array of life-history traits have been identified for many bird species. Despite the importance of egg volume and the need for precise and accurate measurements, egg volume is usually estimated using a mathematical model that incorporates length and width measurements along with a shape variable. We developed an instrument that provides precise estimates of egg volume and can be easily used in the field. Using Clapper Rail (Rallus longirostris) eggs, we compared egg volumes measured using our instrument with estimates based on linear measurements. We found our instrument to be both precise and accurate. Compared with a method based on linear measurements of eggs, use of our instrument reduced variation in egg volume estimates by 1.6 cm3, approximately 8% of the volume of a Clapper Rail's egg. Further advantages of our technique include ease of use, increased accuracy of field-based volume estimates, and increased resolution of variation in egg volume estimates. In addition, our technique does not require postdata collection processing time and did not influence hatching success. Also, for Clapper Rails and similar species, our technique can be combined with other techniques (e.g., egg flotation) so that both egg volume and embryonic stage can be estimated at the same time. SINOPSIS Las relaciones entre el volumen del huevo y una gran cantidad de caracteres en las historias de vida han sido identificadas para muchas especies de aves. A pesar de la importancia del volumen del huevo y la necesidad de medidas más precisas, el volumen del huevo es comúnmente estimado usando modelos matemáticos que incorporan medidas del largo, ancho y forma del huevo. Nosotros creamos un instrumento que proporciona estimativos precisos del volumen del huevo y puede ser fácilmente usado en el campo. Usando huevos de Rallus longirostris comparamos las medidas de los volúmenes de los huevos usando nuestro instrumento con estimados obtenidos mediante mediadas lineales. Encontramos que nuestro instrumento fue preciso. Measuring egg size using digital photography: testing Hoyt's method using Florida Scrub-Jay eggs

ABSTRACT Egg volumes are most often estimated using a mathematical model that incorporates length and width measurements and a species-specific shape variable. Although adequate in many respects, this technique does not account for intraspecific variation in egg shape. We developed a computer-automated technique that uses calibrated digital photographs to render precise measurements of several egg-size parameters including length, width, volume, and surface area. The system extracts egg outlines from photographs, and divides each egg into latitudinal slices that are subsequently regarded as simple geometric shapes (cylinders or cone frustra) with volumes and surface areas that can be summed to generate size parameters for the entire egg. We tested this technique using 491 eggs from Florida Scrub-Jay (Aphelocoma coerulescens) nests and compared the resulting egg volumes with volumes calculated using the preeminent method of estimating volume from linear measurements. Our method was highly accurate, and differences between the volumes from our method and the alternative method were strongly associated with variation in egg shape. Advantages of our technique include decreased handling of eggs and increased accuracy. Aunque es un método adecuado en muchos aspectos, esta técnica no toma enconsideracion las variaciones intraespecificas de la forma de los huevos. Desarrollamos una técnica automática con computadora, que usa fotografia digital calibrada para ofrecer medidas de los huevos incluyendo largo, ancho, volumen y área superficial. El sistema extrae parámetros de los huevos de fotografías y divide cada huevo en rebanadas latitudinales, que subsecuentemente son tomadas como formas geométricas (e.g., cilindros o conos) con volumenes y áreas superficiales, que a su vez pueden ser utilizadas para obtener el largo y el ancho. Pusimos a prueba esta técnica con 491 huevos del Azulejón (Aphelocoma coerulescens) y comparamos el volumen de los huevos obtenidos con el computador con volumenes calculados con el método usual de medidas lineales. Nuestro método fue preciso y las diferencias en los volumenes usando nuestro método y las del método clásico estuvieron asociadas a la variación en la forma de los huevos. Relationship between the unilateral TMJ osteoarthritis/osteoarthrosis, mandibular asymmetry and the EMG activity of the masticatory muscles: a retrospective study

Summary, The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the relationship between the unilateral temporomandibular joint (TMJ) osteoarthritis/osteoarthrosis (OA), mandibular asymmetry and electromyographic (EMG) activity of the masticatory muscles. Twenty-two Japanese women (aged 23·2 ± 5·4 years) and 10 Japanese men (aged 22·4 ± 2·8 years) exhibiting unilateral TMJ OA were included in this study. Two angular and seven linear measurements were obtained for the analysis of the skeletal hard tissues. The cephalometric measurement values (CV) were normalized using the CV ratio for the evaluation of the degree of mandibular asymmetry. The EMG was recorded during maximal voluntary clenching efforts for 10 s in the intercuspal position. The average values of integral EMG (iEMG) of three trials were normalized using the iEMG ratio for the evaluation of the functional balance of the masticatory muscles. The mandibular midline was shifted to the TMJ OA side with a median value of 9·85 mm. The CV ratio of the ramus height of the TMJ OA side was significantly smaller than that of the non-OA side. For the masseter muscle, the iEMG ratio of the TMJ OA side was significantly larger than that of the non-OA side (P < 0·05). These results suggest that unilateral TMJ OA is related to the dentofacial morphology, thus resulting in a mandibular midline shift to the affected side and it is associated with a masticatory muscle imbalance. Multiple morphological characters needed for field identification of cryptic long-eared bat species around the Swiss Alps

Abstract The identification of cryptic species may significantly change our view about their distribution, abundance, ecology and therefore conservation status. In the European Alps, molecular studies have revealed the existence of three sibling species of plecotine bats Plecotus auritus, Plecotus austriacus and, very recently, Plecotus macrobullaris. Knowledge of the ecological niche partitioning of cryptic species is a requisite to develop sound conservation policies. Yet, this requests the development of unambiguous identification methods easily applicable in the field. This study investigates the reliability of several morphological methods used for species recognition and proposes a new identification key for field workers. We captured 214 Plecotus bats from 29 sites in four bioregions within Switzerland, collected biopsy punches for genetic analysis, described and measured external morphological characters. All three species occurred as mono-specific colonies, except at one site where P. auritus and P. macrobullaris shared the same church attic. Qualitative traits alone did not allow a reliable separation of the three species. A series of multivariate analyses conducted on external linear measurements resulted in a discriminant function enabling correct species classification with a 97.5% probability. Compared with genetic analysis, our multivariate morphological method represents a valuable, rapid and cost-effective alternative. [source]

Subjects and Methods,,, The subjects consisted of 34 Japanese females with TMJ OA (aged 24.7 ± 6.1 years) and a control group of 25 healthy Japanese females (aged 23.6 ± 1.3 years). Six cranio-cervical angular measurements were constructed for head posture analysis. Nine angular and three linear measurements were constructed for the skeletal hard tissue analysis. Five angular and one linear measurements were constructed for the dental hard tissue analysis. Unpaired t -tests were used to compare the mean differences of head posture measurements and dentofacial cephalometric measurements between the TMJ OA and the control group. Results,,, The TMJ OA group had significantly larger cranio-cervical angles (p < 0.05) and had more posteriorly rotated mandibles (p < 0.0001) than those in the control group. They also had a significantly shorter posterior facial height (p < 0.0001). The TMJ OA group had more retroclined lower incisors (p < 0.05). Analysis of facial growth in subjects with syndromic ectodermal dysplasia: a longitudinal analysis

Objective, To examine the craniofacial growth pattern of patients diagnosed with syndromic ectodermal dysplasia. >Design, Mixed longitudinal analysis of lateral cephalograms. Setting, The data were analysed using a multilevel modelling technique with the MLwiN application software and the results presented numerically and graphically. Sample Population, All 61 subjects had severe hypodontia with the number of absent teeth (excluding third molars) ranging from 6 to 28 (mean=15.4). At presentation the subjects had a mean age of 133 months and were followed longitudinally for between one and five subsequent occasions (mean 2.66 occasions; mean age at completion of observation 207 months). Outcome Measures, Lateral cephalograms taken at each visit. Experimental Variables, Analysis of four angular measurements and four linear measurements, together with one calculated ratio. Results, Growth curves are presented showing the trends of craniofacial growth. Conclusions, The most significant findings were for a universal tendency for the individuals to undergo a change in sagittal relationship of the jaws, becoming markedly more Class III with time. We have also demonstrated a significant difference in growth between the anterior and posterior face heights indicating that the subjects have a tendency to an anterior growth rotation. [source]


The reliability of crown,root ratio, linear and angular measurements on panoramic radiographs

The aim of this study was to evaluate the reliability of crown and root length, crown,root ratio and angular measurements of teeth relative to constructed reference lines and to other teeth in the same region on consecutive (T1 and T2) panoramic radiographs (OPGs). This retrospective study employed 20 cases; ten with five implants in each jaw (age range between 20 and 60 years) and ten with a full permanent dentition (age range between 12 and 16 years). The consecutive pairs of OPGs ranged from 6 months to 3 years apart. Four variables were measured and compared: 1) the crown or coronal segment length and the root or apical segment length; 2) the crown,root ratio; 3) the angulations of teeth and implants relative to specific reference lines in each jaw; 4) the angle between teeth and implants in the same sextant. The results revealed that comparisons of measurements taken of the same structures at T1 and T2, there were no statistically significant differences (p>0.05) between vertical linear measurements. The crown,root ratios and coronal,apical segment ratios too, showed no significant differences (p>0.05). Whereas, angulations of teeth or implants relative to respective reference lines showed significant differences (p=0.001) for some of the teeth. These differences, however, were less than 5°; a clinically acceptable range. Angles measured between teeth or implants in the same sextant showed no significant differences (p>0.05). These results seem to support the hypothesis, therefore, that the linear vertical measurements, ratio calculations and angular measurements can be used to compare crown and root lengths, crown,root ratios and tooth angulations on OPGs taken of the same patient at different times with consistent accuracy. Ecogeographic variation in human nasal passages

Abstract Theoretically, individuals whose ancestors evolved in cold and/or dry climates should have greater nasal mucosal surface area relative to air volume of the nasal passages than individuals whose ancestors evolved in warm, humid climates. A high surface-area-to-volume (SA/V) ratio allows relatively more air to come in contact with the mucosa and facilitates more efficient heat and moisture exchange during inspiration and expiration, which would be adaptive in a cold, dry environment. Conversely, a low SA/V ratio is not as efficient at recapturing heat and moisture during expiration and allows for better heat dissipation, which would be adaptive in a warm, humid environment. To test this hypothesis, cross-sectional measurements of the nasal passages that reflect surface area and volume were collected from a sample of CT scans of patients of European and African ancestry. Results indicate that individuals of European descent do have higher SA/V ratios than individuals of African descent, but only when decongested. Otherwise, the two groups show little difference. This pattern of variation may be due to selection for different SA/V configurations during times of physical exertion, which has been shown to elicit decongestion. Relationships between linear measurements of the skeletal nasal aperture and cavity and cross-sectional dimensions were also examined. Contrary to predictions, the nasal index, the ratio of nasal breadth to nasal height, is not strongly correlated with internal dimensions. However, differences between the nasal indices of the two groups are highly significant. These results may be indicative of different adaptive solutions to the same problem. State estimation of a solid-state polymerization reactor for PET based on improved SR-UKF

Abstract A state estimator for the continuous solid-state polymerization (SSP) reactor of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is designed in this study. Because of its invalidity in the application to some of the practical examples such as SSP processes, the square-root unscented Kalman filter (SR-UKF) algorithm is improved for the state estimation of arbitrary nonlinear systems with linear measurements. Discussions are given on how to avoid the filter invalidation and accumulating additional error. Orthogonal collocation method has been used to spatially discretize the reactor model described by nonlinear partial differential equations. The reactant concentrations on chosen collocation points are reconstructed from the outlet measurements corrupted with a large noise. Furthermore, the error performance of the developed ISR-UKF is investigated under the influence of various initial parameters, inaccurate measurement noise parameters and model mismatch. Simulation results show that this technique can produce fast convergence and good approximations for the state estimation of SSP reactor. Craniodental indicators of prey size preference in the Felidae

In the present study, we used linear morphometrics of the crania, mandible and dentition to explore the association between craniodental shape and prey size among 35 species of living felids. To accomplish this, felids were divided into three prey-size groups: (1) large prey specialists; (2) small prey specialists; and (3) mixed prey feeders. From these linear measurements, large prey specialist felids can be distinguished from small and mixed prey feeders by their relatively robust canines and incisors and relatively wide muzzles. These cranial characters are advantageous when dispatching large prey, due to the stranglehold that cats employ during this activity. Robust canines resist the bending and torsional forces applied by struggling prey and a wider muzzle helps to stabilize grip and distribute bite forces more evenly during the killing bite. Small prey specialists had smaller canines, narrower muzzles and slightly longer jaws for a speed advantage when catching small, quick prey. Mixed prey feeders were intermediate between large and small prey specialists, indicating they are adapted to killing both sizes of prey. Three-dimensional CT angiography: A new technique for imaging microvascular anatomy

Abstract To date there has been no satisfactory research method for imaging microvascular anatomy in three dimensions (3D). In this article we present a new technique that allows both qualitative and quantitative examination of the microvasculature in 3D. In 10 fresh cadavers (7 females, 3 males, mean age 68 years), selected arteries supplying the abdominal wall and back were injected with a lead oxide/gelatin contrast mixture. From these regions, 30 specimens were dissected free and imaged with a 16-slice spiral computed tomographic (CT) scanner. Using three-dimensional CT (3D-CT) angiography, reconstructions of the microvasculature of each specimen were produced and examined for their qualitative content. Two calibration tools were constructed to determine (1) the accuracy of linear measurements made with CT software tools, and (2) the smallest caliber blood vessel that is reliably represented on 3D-CT reconstructions. Three-dimensional CT angiography produced versatile, high quality angiograms of the microvasculature. Correlation between measurements made with electronic calipers and CT software tools was very high (Lin's concordance coefficient, 0.99 (95% CI 0.99,0.99)). The finest caliber of vessel reliably represented on the 3D-CT reconstructions was 0.4 mm internal diameter. In summary, 3D-CT angiography is a simple, accurate, and reproducible method that imparts a much improved perception of anatomy when compared with existing research methods. Measurement tools provide accurate quantitative data to aid vessel mapping and preoperative planning. Conclusions: Although cadaver bone density may not correspond to the density of vital bone, this in vitro study indicates that CBCT images provided by technique using image intensifier tube and TV chain as an X-ray detector are reliable to define the bone volume of the posterior maxilla for the purpose of planning the implant axis.
