Dietary Lipid Utilization by White Sea Bream (Diplodus sargus) Juveniles

Six experimental diets were formulated to be isoproteic (45% protein) and to contain from 9 to 24% dietary lipid levels (dry matter basis). Fish meal and fish oil were used as the main protein and lipid sources, respectively. At the end of the trial, there were no significant differences (P > 0.05) among groups in fish performance or in whole-body composition. From the results of this trial, it is concluded that, within the range of values tested, increasing dietary lipid levels above 9% has no advantage as it does not promote growth or spare protein for growth purposes. Dietary Lipid Utilization by Juvenile Summer Flounder Paralichthys dentatus

The ability of juvenile summer flounder Paralichthys dentatus to utilize dietary lipid as energy, and the effect of dietary lipid on weight gain and body composition was investigated in a 12-week feeding trial. Diets were formulated to provide 55% crude protein from herring meal and casein. Menhaden oil was added to produce diets with 8, 12, 16 or 20% total lipid while providing 16.0 kJ available energy/g dry diet. The diet containing 20% total lipid supplied 16.7 kJ available energy/g dry diet due to the high levels of protein and lipid. An additional diet was included to reproduce currently available commercial diet formulations for flounder, providing 55% crude protein supplied solely from herring meal and 16% total dietary lipid. Juvenile summer flounder (initial weight 23 g) were stocked into triplicate aquaria in a closed, recirculating system maintained at 20 C. Fish were fed 2% of body weight each day divided into two equal feedings. Upon termination of the study, effects of dietary lipid on weight gain, body condition indices, and proximate composition were determined. Weight gain (96,149% of initial weight), feed efficiency ratio values (0.43,0.48). fillet yield, and whole-body composition all were unaffected by dietary lipid level. High levels of dietary lipid did increase the lipid content in the finray muscle, as fish fed diets containing 16 and 20% dietary lipid had significantly higher lipid levels than fish fed the diet containing 8% lipid. No apparent protein sparing effect of lipid was observed. These data indicate that currently available commercial feeds for summer flounder may be over-formulated and show a need for further research to determine specific and accurate nutritional information for this species. Effects of varying dietary fatty acid profile on growth performance, fatty acid, body and tissue composition of juvenile pike perch (Sander lucioperca)

Abstract Pike perch (Sander lucioperca) has been identified as specie destined to diverse European inland aquaculture, but knowledge on the nutritional requirements is weak. Therefore, we investigated the effect of varying dietary fatty acid (FA) profile by partial replacement of fish oil (FO) with vegetable oils on growth, FA and body composition of juvenile pike perch. An extruded basal diet containing 59 g kg,1 crude lipids (FO) was added with 60 g kg,1 FO, 60 g kg,1 linseed oil (LO) or 60 g kg,1 soybean oil (SO). The resulting dietary FA composition differed mainly in the triglyceride fraction and was characterized by highest amounts of linolenic acid (18:3 n-3) in the LO diet and linoleic acid in the SO diet. Diet enriched with FO contained highest contents of highly unsaturated FA 20:5 n-3 (eicosapentaenic acid) and 22:6 n-3 (docosahexaenic acid). Pike perch were held in a recirculation system and each feeding group (in triplicate) was fed with experimental diets at a daily rate of 35 g kg,1 of biomass for 57 days by automatic feeders. Weight gain and specific growth rate of experimental feeding groups ranged between 18.47 and 19.58 g and 1.37,1.45% day,1 and was not affected by the dietary composition indicating that FO can be replaced by vegetable oils without negative impact on growth performance. In contrast to the whole body and muscle composition, liver tissue was affected by the varying diets. Liver tissues of fish fed diets enriched with vegetable oils showed significantly increased lipid contents of 162 (LO) and 147 (SO) g kg,1 and indicate decreased lipid utilization compared with fish fed FO diet (liver lipid content 112 g kg,1). Nevertheless, hepatosomatic index of pike perch was not influenced by dietary lipid composition. The FA profile of pike perch was generally determined by the dietary FAs. [source]


Effect of EPA/DHA ratios on the growth and survival of Galaxias maculatus (Jenyns, 1842) larvae reared under different salinity regimes

Abstract Despite the importance of certain highly unsaturated fatty acids in osmotic regulation, few studies have been addressed to determine the essential fatty acid requirements for a given species cultured under different salinities. As Galaxias maculatus is a diadromic species, the present study aimed to determine the effect of salinity on the optimum dietary EPA/docosahexaenoic (DHA) ratio for survival and growth during the larval stages. Larvae were fed for 20 days with rotifers containing two different EPA/DHA ratios (low: 0.64 and high: 2.18) at three different salinities (0, 10 and 15 g L,1). The results of this study showed a marked effect of water salinity on larval dietary lipid utilization in G. maculatus larvae. These results suggested that G. maculatus larvae reared at higher salinities may have a higher dietary requirement for DHA, whereas larvae reared at 0, showed higher requirements for EPA. The overall results of the present study indicate that even small changes in salinity can determine the optimum dietary EPA/DHA ratio and the quantitative essential fatty requirements of fish. This may have important repercussions and affect the rearing performance of G. maculatus cultured under different salinities. [source]


Lower ability to oxidize lipids in adult patients with growth hormone (GH) deficiency: reversal under GH treatment

Summary Background, The aim of the study was to characterize lipid oxidation at exercise in adults with growth hormone deficiency (GHD) and to evaluate the effect of 6 and 12 months of GH replacement therapy on substrate carbohydrate (CHO) and lipid utilization at exercise. Patients and measurements, Twenty-five patients with GHD and 40 matched controls participated in the study. Ten of the 25 GH-deficient patients were treated with recombinant GH for 12 months. Anthropometric measurements and exercise calorimetry were performed before and after treatment. Maximal fat oxidation and the crossover point [that is the percentage of the theoretical maximal power (Wmax th) where CHO become the predominant fuel used for oxidation] were determined. Results and conclusion, The GH-deficient patients exhibited a highly significant shift in the balance of substrate oxidation during exercise, towards a decrease in fat oxidation, and a shift towards lower intensities of the crossover (52 ± 5·5%vs. 72·6 ± 6·6% of Wmax th, P < 0·03) and maximal fat oxidation (131·04 ± 14 vs. 234·4 ± 30·1 mg/min, P < 0·03) in the GHD and control groups, respectively. However, GH treatment at 6 and 12 months partially reversed this defect, resulting in an increase (+83%, P < 0·001) in the maximal ability to oxidize fat during exercise. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that a lack of GH reduces the ability to oxidize lipids during exercise and that GH treatment restores this muscular metabolic property. [source]
