U-PVC gelation level assessment, part 1: Comparison of different techniques

Several different gelation assessment methods such as differential scanning calorimetry, capillary rheometry, solvent absorption, wide angle x-ray scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy were applied to a typical PVC window profile formulation subjected to various thermomechanical histories. Shear applied during the process could be decomposed into two components: (i) a thermal component corresponding to the self-heating that was generated and (ii) a "mechanical" component associated with a "pure" shearing action deprived of any thermal aspect. Shear sensitivity of the above-mentioned gelation assessment techniques was evaluated by considering both aspects. Gelation levels established by differential scanning calorimetry and capillary rheometry were especially compared, thus allowing a comparison of the two physical aspects evidenced by each technique, i.e., crystallite melting and macromolecular network development. It appeared that as soon as the PVC particulate structure had been fragmented into micronic entities (primary particles) the gelation process was governed mainly by the thermal aspect, i.e., crystallite melting. Serum interleukin-17 levels are related to clinical severity in allergic rhinitis

Background:, T helper (Th)-17 cells are a subset of T helper lymphocytes that exert regulatory activities. Recently, it has been reported that serum interleukin (IL)-17 levels are high in the most severe cases of birch allergy studied outside the pollen season. Objective:, The aim of this study was to investigate a possible relationship between serum IL-17 levels and clinical parameters in patients with allergic rhinitis studied during the pollen season. Methods:, In all, 56 patients with persistent pollen-induced allergic rhinitis were evaluated during the pollen season. Serum IL-17 levels were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Symptoms were assessed by visual analogue scale, drug use was monitored and peripheral eosinophils were counted. Results:, Serum IL-17 levels were significantly related to clinical symptoms, drug use and peripheral eosinophil counts (P = 0.0001 for all). Conclusion:, This study provides evidence that serum IL-17 level assessment might be considered to classify allergy severity. [source]


Breeding behavior and its possible consequences for gene flow in Taraxacum sect.

Abstract Studies of pollen, seed set and experimental hybridizations were carried out to clarify breeding behavior and gene flow pathways in Taraxacum sect. Erythrosperma. Seeds from hybridization (106 samples), open pollinated (34) and bagged (43) capitula were analyzed for breeding system using a flow,cytometric seed screen. In the section Erythrosperma, diploids are obligate sexuals, mostly allogamous; however, autogamy also occurs (in 28% of unpollinated capitula). Triploids are apomicts with residual sexuality (in 13% of capitula pollinated by pollen of diploids). Pollen of diploids in Taraxacum is usually approximately the same size (regular pollen). In our study, in the section Erythrosperma, many diploids (24%) produced pollen grains of different sizes (irregular pollen) and one plant produced no pollen. The pollen of triploids is either irregular (33%) or the triploids produce no pollen (67%). Consequently, the method of ploidy level assessment on the basis of pollen characteristics is not suitable for Taraxacum sect. Erythrosperma. Low potential for polyploid hybrid formation between diploid maternal plants and polyploid pollen donors, considerable tendency to autogamy and no evidence of the formation of diploid progeny by polyploid maternal plants (facultative apomixis) indicates low intensity of gene flow within Taraxacum sect. Erythrosperma. This, together with a lower population density and spatial isolation of ploidy levels, is expected to result in a lower rate of formation of new apomictic lineages. Thus, Taraxacum sect. Erythrosperma appears evolutionarily more stable and taxonomically less complicated than sect. Ruderalia. The present study supports the agamospecies concept of Taraxacum sect. Erythrosperma. [source]


Estimating metabolic biotransformation rates in fish from laboratory data

Abstract A method is proposed for estimating metabolic biotransformation rate constants for nonionic organic chemicals from measured laboratory bioconcentration and dietary bioaccumulation data in fish. Data have been selected based on a quality review to reduce uncertainty in the measured values. A kinetic mass balance model is used to estimate rates of chemical uptake and elimination. Biotransformation rate constants are essentially calculated as the difference between two quantities, a measured bio-concentration factor or elimination rate constant, and a model-derived bioconcentration factor or elimination rate constant estimated assuming no biotransformation. Model parameterization exploits key empirical data when they are available and assumes default values when study specific data are unavailable. Uncertainty analyses provide screening level assessments for confidence in the biotransformation rate constant estimates. The uncertainty analyses include the range for 95% of the predicted values and 95% confidence intervals for the calculated biotransformation values. Case studies are provided to illustrate the calculation and uncertainty methods. Biotransformation rate constants calculated by the proposed method are compared with other published estimates for 31 chemicals that range in octanol,water partition coefficients from approximately 101 to 108 and represent over four orders of magnitude in biotransformation potential. The comparison of previously published values with those calculated by the proposed method shows general agreement with 82% of the estimated values falling within a factor of three. [source]
