Selected AbstractsThe Crafting of Community: Recoupling Discourses of Management and WomanhoodGENDER, WORK & ORGANISATION, Issue 3 2001Valérie Fournier The construction of organizations around images of masculinity makes the position of ,women managers' a problematic one which calls for ,remedial work' (Gherardi 1995). Women managers have sought to reconcile their dualistic positions by deploying various individual and collective coping strategies typically articulated within the boundaries of their organizations. In contrast, we research a group of senior women from a British city in the Midlands who attempt to renegotiate their conflicting identities as ,female' and ,senior managers' by creating a collective forum outside their organizations. Through the construction of a ,learning set', they created a space where members could explore their terms of participation, as women and as managers, in their respective work organizations and in the local community. This space was articulated implicitly and explicitly around values typically associated with ,community' (e.g. sharing, support, trust, loyalty), a controversial concept in feminist politics. The article documents the (fragile and contested) processes by which these women mobilize the imagery of community in order to create a safe space where ,remedial work' could be performed. The conclusion stresses the ambivalent effects of the learning set in both reproducing and transgressing gendered positions. [source] Sensitivity analysis of neural network parameters to improve the performance of electricity price forecastingINTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENERGY RESEARCH, Issue 1 2009Paras Mandal Abstract This paper presents a sensitivity analysis of neural network (NN) parameters to improve the performance of electricity price forecasting. The presented work is an extended version of previous works done by authors to integrate NN and similar days (SD) method for predicting electricity prices. Focus here is on sensitivity analysis of NN parameters while keeping the parameters same for SD to forecast day-ahead electricity prices in the PJM market. Sensitivity analysis of NN parameters include back-propagation learning set (BP-set), learning rate (,), momentum (,) and NN learning days (dNN). The SD parameters, i.e. time framework of SD (d=45 days) and number of selected similar price days (N=5) are kept constant for all the simulated cases. Forecasting performance is carried out by choosing two different days from each season of the year 2006 and for which, the NN parameters for the base case are considered as BP-set=500, ,=0.8, ,=0.1 and dNN=45 days. Sensitivity analysis has been carried out by changing the value of BP-set (500, 1000, 1500); , (0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2), , (0.1, 0.2, 0.3) and dNN (15, 30, 45 and 60 days). The most favorable value of BP-set is first found out from the sensitivity analysis followed by that of , and ,, and based on which the best value of dNN is determined. Sensitivity analysis results demonstrate that the best value of mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) is obtained when BP-set=500, ,=0.8, ,=0.1 and dNN=60 days for winter season. For spring, summer and autumn, these values are 500, 0.6, 0.1 and 45 days, respectively. MAPE, forecast mean square error and mean absolute error of reasonably small value are obtained for the PJM data, which has correlation coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.7758 between load and electricity price. Numerical results show that forecasts generated by developed NN model based on the most favorable case are accurate and efficient. Copyright © 2008 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. [source] Peer observation of teaching in the online environment: an action research approachJOURNAL OF COMPUTER ASSISTED LEARNING, Issue 5 2008D. Swinglehurst Abstract This paper describes a collaborative action research approach used to explore peer observation of teaching (POT) within the online environment. Although POT has become familiar in face-to-face teaching contexts, little is understood of its potential role in online settings. We conducted ,virtual' focus groups to explore the experience and views of 28 teachers and subjected our data to a thematic analysis. This informed the implementation of an innovative programme of POT, ,Peer-to-peer Reflection on Pedagogical Practice' (PROPP) among tutors of a Web-based MSc in International Primary Health Care at University College London. Modeled on an action learning set, the programme encourages collaborative reflection on teaching practices, based on participants' specific examples of online teaching. The PROPP model is consistent with Quality Enhancement, which we distinguish from Quality Assurance. Here, we describe the implementation of the PROPP programme within an action research framework and identify the factors that we consider critical to the success of peer observation within online courses. We highlight examples of aspects of teaching that have been discussed within the PROPP programme and offer suggestions of the kinds of evidence that could be incorporated into a portfolio to demonstrate the effectiveness of such an initiative. [source] Predictive value of actin-free Gc-globulin in acute liver failure,,LIVER TRANSPLANTATION, Issue 9 2007Frank V. Schiřdt Serum concentrations of the actin scavenger Gc-globulin may provide prognostic information in acute liver failure (ALF). The fraction of Gc-globulin not bound to actin is postulated to represent a better marker than total Gc-globulin but has been difficult to measure. We tested a new rapid assay for actin-free Gc-globulin to determine its prognostic value when compared with the King's College Hospital (KCH) criteria in a large number of patients with ALF. A total of 252 patients with varying etiologies from the U.S. ALF Study Group registry were included; the first 178 patients constituted the learning set, and the last 74 patients served as the validation set. Actin-free Gc-globulin was determined with a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. The median (range) actin-free Gc-globulin level at admission for the learning set was significantly reduced compared with controls (47 [0-183] mg/L vs. 204 [101-365] mg/L, respectively, P < 0.001). Gc-globulin levels were significantly higher in spontaneous survivors than in patients who died or were transplanted (53 [0-129] mg/L vs. 37 [0-183] mg/L, P = 0.002). A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis showed that a 40 mg/L cutoff level carried the best prognostic information, yielding positive and negative predictive values of 68% and 67%, respectively, in the validation set. The corresponding figures for the KCH criteria were 72% and 64%. A new enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for actin-free Gc-globulin provides the same (but not optimal) prognostic information as KCH criteria in a single measurement at admission. [source] Prediction of Tyrosinase Inhibition Activity Using Atom-Based Bilinear IndicesCHEMMEDCHEM, Issue 4 2007Yovani Marrero-Ponce Prof. Abstract A set of novel atom-based molecular fingerprints is proposed based on a bilinear map similar to that defined in linear algebra. These molecular descriptors (MDs) are proposed as a new means of molecular parametrization easily calculated from 2D molecular information. The nonstochastic and stochastic molecular indices match molecular structure provided by molecular topology by using the kth nonstochastic and stochastic graph-theoretical electronic-density matrices, Mk and Sk, respectively. Thus, the kth nonstochastic and stochastic bilinear indices are calculated using Mk and Sk as matrix operators of bilinear transformations. Chemical information is coded by using different pair combinations of atomic weightings (mass, polarizability, vdW volume, and electronegativity). The results of QSAR studies of tyrosinase inhibitors using the new MDs and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) demonstrate the ability of the bilinear indices in testing biological properties. A database of 246 structurally diverse tyrosinase inhibitors was assembled. An inactive set of 412 drugs with other clinical uses was used; both active and inactive sets were processed by hierarchical and partitional cluster analyses to design training and predicting sets. Twelve LDA-based QSAR models were obtained, the first six using the nonstochastic total and local bilinear indices and the last six with the stochastic MDs. The discriminant models were applied; globally good classifications of 99.58 and 89.96,% were observed for the best nonstochastic and stochastic bilinear indices models in the training set along with high Matthews correlation coefficients (C) of 0.99 and 0.79, respectively, in the learning set. External prediction sets used to validate the models obtained were correctly classified, with accuracies of 100 and 87.78,%, respectively, yielding C values of 1.00 and 0.73. This subset contains 180 active and inactive compounds not considered to fit the models. A simulated virtual screen demonstrated this approach in searching tyrosinase inhibitors from compounds never considered in either training or predicting series. These fitted models permitted the selection of new cycloartane compounds isolated from herbal plants as new tyrosinase inhibitors. A good correspondence between theoretical and experimental inhibitory effects on tyrosinase was observed; compound CA6 (IC50=1.32,,M) showed higher activity than the reference compounds kojic acid (IC50=16.67,,M) and L -mimosine (IC50=3.68,,M). [source] Report on accreditation learning sets in the West Midlands Region of the NHSHEALTH INFORMATION & LIBRARIES JOURNAL, Issue 4 2000Gwen Giles This article reports on the evaluation of the first year of a project, which utilized learning sets to support librarians undergoing the accreditation process, in the health libraries in the West Midlands region of the NHS. The West Midlands Health region is divided up into education consortia patches. Each group of patch librarians was allocated a local accreditation facilitator. The groups met regularly to discuss problems and progress relating to their library's accreditation. The results of the evaluation suggest that this is a valuable approach to use. The recommendations state that regular, frequent meetings are needed. Extra training and guidance would help the facilitators to be more effective in their role. [source] |
