Net regional ecosystem CO2 exchange from airborne and ground-based eddy covariance, land-use maps and weather observations

Abstract Measurements of regional net ecosystem exchange (NEE) were made over a period of 21 days in summer 2002 in the South-Central part of the Netherlands and extrapolated to an area of 13 000 km2 using a combination of flux measurements made by a Sky Arrow ERA research aircraft, half-hourly eddy covariance data from four towers, half-hourly weather data recorded by three weather stations and detailed information on regional land use. The combination of this type of information allowed to estimate the net contribution of the terrestrial ecosystems to the overall regional carbon flux and to map dynamically the temporal and spatial variability of the fluxes. A regional carbon budget was calculated for the study period and the contributions of the different land uses to the overall regional flux, were assessed. Ecosystems were, overall, a small source of carbon to the atmosphere equivalent to to 0.23±0.025 g C m,2 day,1. When considered separately, arable and grasslands were a source of, respectively, 0.68±0.022 and 1.28±0.026 g C m,2 day,1. Evergreen and deciduous forests were instead a sink of ,1.42±0.015 g C m,2 day,1. During the study period, forests offset approximately 3.5% of anthropogenic carbon emission estimates obtained from inventory data. Lacking of a robust validation, NEE values obtained with this method were compared with independent state of art estimates of the regional carbon balance that were obtained by applying a semi-empirical model of NEE driven by MODIS satellite fAPAR data. The comparison showed an acceptable matching for the carbon balance of forest that was a sink in both cases, while a much larger difference for arable and grassland was found. Those ecosystems were a sink for satellite-based estimates while they were a source for the combined aircraft and tower estimates. Possible causes of such differences are discussed and partly addressed. The importance of new methods for determining carbon balance at the regional scale, is outlined. [source]


Mechanisms of Transition Between Double Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardias

Double Paroxysmal Supraventricular Tachycardias. Introduction: Coexistence of double tachycardias in one patient has been infrequently reported. Furthermore, the mechanisms of transition between double paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardias have not been well studied. Methods and Results: Thirty-five patients with two paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardias were studied. Group IA consisted of 3 patients with spontaneous transition between AV reciprocating tachycardia (AVRT) and AV nodal reentrant tachycardia (AVNRT). Group IB consisted of 13 patients without spontaneous transition between AVRT and AVNRT. Group IIA consisted of 5 patients with spontaneous transition between AVNRT and atrial tachycardia (AT). Group IIB consisted of 14 patients without spontaneous transition between AVNRT and AT. The absolute values of differences between the two tachycardia cycle lengths were significantly smaller in patients with than in those without transition between the two tachycardias (25 ± 8 msec vs 90 ± 46 msec, P < 0.05, IA vs IB; 21 ± 25 msec vs 99 ± 57 msec, P < 0.01, IIA vs IIB). The cutoff point of 25 msec had 80% positive predictive value for transition between the two tachycardias. Transition between two tachycardias occurred due to a spontaneous premature atrial complex (30%), conduction block at one limb of tachycardia (20%), or tachycardiainduced tachycardia (50%). Absence of transition between two tachycardias might be explained by the absence of a spontaneous premature atrial complex, longer cycle length of the first tachycardia, larger difference between two tachycardia cycle lengths, or induction of each tachycardia under different situations. Conclusion: Double supraventricular tachycardias with similar tachycardia cycle lengths are vulnerable to transition between different tachycardias. [source]


Diffusion tensor MRI in rat models of invasive and well-demarcated brain tumors

Abstract Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and its metrics, such as mean diffusivity (MD) and fractional anisotropy (FA), have been used to detect the extent of brain tumors and understand tumor growth and its influence on the surrounding tissue. However, there are conflicting reports on how DTI metrics can be used for tumor diagnosis. The physiological interpretation of these metrics in terms of tumor growth is also not clear. The objective of this study was to investigate the DTI parameters in two rat brain tumor models (9L and F98) with different patterns of aggressiveness by longitudinal monitoring of tumor growth and comparing the DTI parameters of these two tumor models. In addition to the standard DTI metrics, MD and FA, we measured other metrics representing diffusion tensor shape, such as linear and planar anisotropy coefficients (CL and CP), and orientational coherence measured by lattice index (LI), to characterize the two tumor models. The 9L tumor had higher FA, CL, and LI than the F98 tumor. F98 had a larger difference in anisotropies between tumor and peritumor regions than 9L. From the eigenvalues, it was found that the increase in CL and trace of the 9L tumor was due to an increase in the primary eigenvalue, whereas the increase in CP in the peritumor region was due to an increase in both primary and secondary eigenvalues and a decrease in tertiary eigenvalue. Our results indicate that shape-oriented anisotropy measures, such as CL and CP, and orientational coherence measures, such as LI, can provide useful information in differentiating these two tumor models and also differentiating tumor from peritumoral regions. Evolutionary constraints on structural similarity in orthologs and paralogs,

Abstract Although a quantitative relationship between sequence similarity and structural similarity has long been established, little is known about the impact of orthology on the relationship between protein sequence and structure. Among homologs, orthologs (derived by speciation) more frequently have similar functions than paralogs (derived by duplication). Here, we hypothesize that an orthologous pair will tend to exhibit greater structural similarity than a paralogous pair at the same level of sequence similarity. To test this hypothesis, we used 284,459 pairwise structure-based alignments of 12,634 unique domains from SCOP as well as orthology and paralogy assignments from OrthoMCL DB. We divided the comparisons by sequence identity and determined whether the sequence-structure relationship differed between the orthologs and paralogs. We found that at levels of sequence identity between 30 and 70%, orthologous domain pairs indeed tend to be significantly more structurally similar than paralogous pairs at the same level of sequence identity. An even larger difference is found when comparing ligand binding residues instead of whole domains. These differences between orthologs and paralogs are expected to be useful for selecting template structures in comparative modeling and target proteins in structural genomics. [source]


Microarray analysis of gene expression changes in feeding female and male lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum (L)

Abstract A collection of EST clones from female tick Amblyomma americanum salivary glands was hybridized to RNA from different feeding stages of female tick salivary glands and from unfed or feeding adult male ticks. In the female ticks, the expression patterns changed dramatically upon starting feeding, then changed again towards the end of feeding. On beginning feeding, genes possibly involved in survival on the host increased in expression as did many housekeeping genes. As feeding progressed, some of the survival genes were downregulated, while others were upregulated. When the tick went into the rapid feeding phase, many of the survival genes were downregulated, while a number of transport-associated genes and genes possibly involved in organ degeneration increased. In the males, the presence of females during feeding made a small difference, but feeding made a larger difference. Males showed clear differences from females in expression, as well. Protein synthesis genes were expressed more in all male groups than in the partially fed females, while the putative secreted genes involved in avoiding host defenses were expressed less. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Carbon storage and fluxes in ponderosa pine forests at different developmental stages

Abstract We compared carbon storage and fluxes in young and old ponderosa pine stands in Oregon, including plant and soil storage, net primary productivity, respiration fluxes, eddy flux estimates of net ecosystem exchange (NEE), and Biome-BGC simulations of fluxes. The young forest (Y site) was previously an old-growth ponderosa pine forest that had been clearcut in 1978, and the old forest (O site), which has never been logged, consists of two primary age classes (50 and 250 years old). Total ecosystem carbon content (vegetation, detritus and soil) of the O forest was about twice that of the Y site (21 vs. 10 kg C m,2 ground), and significantly more of the total is stored in living vegetation at the O site (61% vs. 15%). Ecosystem respiration (Re) was higher at the O site (1014 vs. 835 g C m,2 year,1), and it was largely from soils at both sites (77% of Re). The biological data show that above-ground net primary productivity (ANPP), NPP and net ecosystem production (NEP) were greater at the O site than the Y site. Monte Carlo estimates of NEP show that the young site is a source of CO2 to the atmosphere, and is significantly lower than NEP(O) by c. 100 g C m,2 year,1. Eddy covariance measurements also show that the O site was a stronger sink for CO2 than the Y site. Across a 15-km swath in the region, ANPP ranged from 76 g C m,2 year,1 at the Y site to 236 g C m,2 year,1 (overall mean 158 ± 14 g C m,2 year,1). The lowest ANPP values were for the youngest and oldest stands, but there was a large range of ANPP for mature stands. Carbon, water and nitrogen cycle simulations with the Biome-BGC model suggest that disturbance type and frequency, time since disturbance, age-dependent changes in below-ground allocation, and increasing atmospheric concentration of CO2 all exert significant control on the net ecosystem exchange of carbon at the two sites. Model estimates of major carbon flux components agree with budget-based observations to within ±,20%, with larger differences for NEP and for several storage terms. Simulations showed the period of regrowth required to replace carbon lost during and after a stand-replacing fire (O) or a clearcut (Y) to be between 50 and 100 years. In both cases, simulations showed a shift from net carbon source to net sink (on an annual basis) 10,20 years after disturbance. These results suggest that the net ecosystem production of young stands may be low because heterotrophic respiration, particularly from soils, is higher than the NPP of the regrowth. The amount of carbon stored in long-term pools (biomass and soils) in addition to short-term fluxes has important implications for management of forests in the Pacific North-west for carbon sequestration. A Meta-Analytic Investigation of Job Applicant Faking on Personality Measures

This study investigates the extent to which job applicants fake their responses on personality tests. Thirty-three studies that compared job applicant and non-applicant personality scale scores were meta-analyzed. Across all job types, applicants scored significantly higher than non-applicants on extraversion (d=.11), emotional stability (d=.44), conscientiousness (d=.45), and openness (d=.13). For certain jobs (e.g., sales), however, the rank ordering of mean differences changed substantially suggesting that job applicants distort responses on personality dimensions that are viewed as particularly job relevant. Smaller mean differences were found in this study than those reported by Viswesvaran and Ones (Educational and Psychological Measurement, 59(2), 197,210), who compared scores for induced "fake-good" vs. honest response conditions. Also, direct Big Five measures produced substantially larger differences than did indirect Big Five measures. [source]


A comparative analysis of restoration measures and their effects on hydromorphology and benthic invertebrates in 26 central and southern European rivers

Summary 1.,Hydromorphological river restoration usually leads to habitat diversification, but the effects on benthic invertebrates, which are frequently used to assess river ecological status, are minor. We compared the effects of river restoration on morphology and benthic invertebrates by investigating 26 pairs of non-restored and restored sections of rivers in Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands. 2.,Sites were grouped according to (1) region: central Europe vs. southern Europe; (2) river type: mountain vs. lowland rivers; (3) restoration approach: active vs. passive restoration and (4) a combination of these parameters. All sites were sampled according to the same field protocol comprising hydromorphological surveys of river and floodplain mesohabitats, microhabitats at the river bottom and habitat-specific sampling of benthic invertebrates. Restoration effects were compared using Shannon,Wiener Indices (SWIs) of mesohabitats, microhabitats and invertebrate communities. Differences in metric values between non-restored and restored sites were compared for 16 metrics that evaluated hydromorphology and the benthic invertebrate community. 3.,Mean SWIs differed for both mesohabitats (1·1 non-restored, 1·7 restored) and microhabitats (1·0 non-restored, 1·3 restored), while SWIs for invertebrate communities were not significantly different (2·4 non-restored, 2·3 restored). Meso- and microhabitat metrics in the restored sections were usually higher compared with the non-restored sections, but the effects on invertebrate metrics were negligible. 4.,Measures in southern Europe and mountainous regions yielded larger differences between non-restored and restored sections of rivers. Differences in the meso- and microhabitat metrics were largest for actively restored sections of central European mountain rivers and rivers from southern Europe, followed by passively restored mountain rivers in central Europe. The smallest differences were observed for lowland sites. There was no significant restoration effect on invertebrate metrics in any categories. 5.,Synthesis and applications. Restoration measures addressing relatively short river sections (several hundred metres) are successful in terms of improving habitat diversity of the river and its floodplain. Active restoration measures are suitable if short-term changes in hydromorphology are desired. To realize changes in benthic invertebrate community composition, habitat restoration within a small stretch is generally not sufficient. We conclude that restoring habitat on a larger scale, using more comprehensive measures and tackling catchment-wide problems (e.g. water quality, source populations) are required for a recovery of the invertebrate community. Distribution and genesis of Fahlerden (Albeluvisols) in Germany

Abstract Fahlerden dominate large areas of the young and old moraine landscapes of N and E Germany. Fahlerden (part of Fahlerden corresponds to Albeluvisols) and their transitional subtypes are supposed to have a higher intensity of clay illuviation than Parabraunerden (Luvisols). Besides this macroscopic feature reflecting periglacial influence, micromorphological features such as lenticular platy microstructure, vesicles, and fragments of clay coatings in Bt streaks document the initiation of Fahlerde genesis, which began in the Late Glacial. A model of Fahlerde genesis chronologically connects sedimentological and periglacial processes, vegetation development, and soil-forming processes like decalcification, clay illuviation, and humification. The classification criterion of larger differences in clay contents between E and Bt horizons to distinguish Fahlerden from Parabraunerden needs to be reconsidered, because most Fahlerden have developed in stratified parent material in periglacially influenced landscapes. The interpretation of a soil data base listing data of both soil types distributed in Brandenburg demonstrates that the difference in clay contents between E and Bt horizons may even be smaller in Fahlerden than in Parabraunerden. ABSTRACT Stable isotopes in water have the potential to diagnose changes in the earth's hydrological budget in response to climate change and land use change. However, there have been few measurements in the vapour phase. Here, we present high-frequency measurements of oxygen isotopic compositions of water vapour (,v) and evapotranspiration (,ET) above a soybean canopy using the tunable diode laser (TDL) technique for the entire 2006 growing season in Minnesota, USA. We observed a large variability in surface ,v from the daily to the seasonal timescales, largely explained by Rayleigh processes, but also influenced by vertical atmospheric mixing, local evapotranspiration (ET) and dew formation. We used ,ET measurements to calculate the isotopic composition at the sites of evaporative enrichment in leaves (,L,e) and compared that with the commonly used steady-state prediction (,L,s). There was generally a good agreement averaged over the season, but larger differences on individual days. We also found that vertical variability in relative humidity and temperature associated with canopy structure must be addressed in canopy-scale leaf water models. Finally, we explored this data set for direct evidence of the Péclet effect. [source]
