Selected AbstractsBacteriological and chemical changes occurring in Bunker-stored silage covered with biodegradable coatingJOURNAL OF APPLIED MICROBIOLOGY, Issue 2 2007P. Denoncourt Abstract Aims:, To evaluate the efficacy of a biodegradable silage coating for the ability to protect timothy (Phleum pratensa) type silage against spoilage and its quality under natural conditions. Methods and Results:, Triplicate mini-silos of silage were prepared for three treatments (1: uncoated; 2: coated with biodegradable coating and 3: sealed with plastic), two types of storage (unprotected or protected from rain) and 10 sampling times (0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 56, 63 and 70 days postensiling). Triplicate mini-silos were opened at each sampling time for microbiological (total aerobic bacteria, lactic acid bacteria, moulds and yeasts) and biochemical analyses [pH, dry matter (DM), water-soluble sugars (WSC), lactic (LA), acetic, propionic and butyric acids content]. The study showed that at day 70, counts of moulds and yeasts in silages protected against rain and coated with biodegradable coating were 5·98 log CFU g,1 when compared with 5·92 and 3·62 log CFU g,1 in samples from plastic-sealed silage and uncoated silage, respectively. The pH was low and stable pH (4·34) when compared with uncoated (7·17) and plastic sealed (8·34) silages (P 0·05). A DM, WSC and LA content of 421·7, 13·4 and 20·9 g kg,1 was, respectively, observed. For silage stored outdoors, a level of moulds and yeasts of 3·77 log CFU g,1 of silage was also observed in silages coated with biodegradable coating after 28 days of storage. A stable pH showing a mean value of 4 was also observed. The pH, DM, WSC and LA content were, respectively, 4·18, 341·1, 13·34 and 31·8 g kg,1 in these samples. After 70 days of storage, the level of moulds and yeasts on silage sealed with biodegradable coating was 7·73 log CFU g,1. A DM, WSC and LA content of 291·9, 5·56 and 10·0 g kg,1 was, respectively, observed. Conclusions:, When compared with uncoated silage, the application of biodegradable coating can preserve the quality of silage for up to a month when exposed to rain and up to 70 days when protected from rain. Significance and Impact of the Study:, Results emphasize the possibility of the use of a biodegradable coating as an alternative to plastic film for sealing horizontal bunker silos. [source] Content of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in serum and liver of rats fed restricted diets supplemented with vitamins B2, B6 and folic acidBIOFACTORS, Issue 1-4 2004Jerzy Bertrandt Abstract The aim of study was to investigate an influence of nutritional deficiency and dietary addition of vit. B2, B6 and folic acid on PUFAs content in rats' serum and liver. Limitation of consumption full value diet to 50% of its previously determined daily consumption, enriched with m/a vitamins, significant decreased of linoleic (LA) and ,-linolenic (ALA) acids as well as distinctly increased arachidonic (AA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids content in serum in 30th day. In 60th day lower content of AA and DHA fatty acids was found. Nutrition with such diet, lasting 90 days caused decrease of LA content and increase of AA. Diet limitation to its 30% of daily consumption decreased of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and DHA in the 30th day, while AA and DHA content was increased in the 60th day. Distinct decrease of AA content and increase of EPA content were found in the 90th day of experiment. Use of diets, with limited consumption to 50% caused increase of LA and ALA acids content while AA and DHA acids content were significantly decreased in the liver, in 90th day. Limited consumption supplemented diet to 30% caused in liver significant decrease of LA and increase of EPA acids content. Dobal Abstract Thin films of Ba1,xLaxTiO3 on platinum substrates were synthesized using the sol,gel method for x values of 0.0, 0.03, 0.05, and 0.10, and the effect of trivalent La3+ substitution on the structural and dielectric properties was studied. Using X-ray diffraction, structural analysis of these compositions revealed a slight increase in the tetragonal distortion of the unit cell with increase in La content. Accordingly, an increase in the tetragonal to cubic transition temperature TT/C was detected by temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy in the range of 70,500 K. Unlike the results from Raman scattering for the La-doped BaTiO3 films, the dielectric measurements showed broad and diffused dielectric maxima, making the estimation of the transition temperature merely qualitative. [source] Energetics of Defect Fluorite and Pyrochlore Phases in Lanthanum and Gadolinium HafnatesJOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CERAMIC SOCIETY, Issue 4 2007Sergey V. Ushakov Aerodynamic levitation combined with laser heating was used to prepare melts in the HfO2,La2O3 (,Gd2O3) systems. All melts crystallized upon quenching in oxygen. Hf2La2O7 pyrochlore and Gd0.5Hf0.5O1.75 fluorite phases were identified. Gd0.5Hf0.5O1.75 fluorite was transformed into the pyrochlore structure by annealing at 1450°C. Pyrochlore that crystallized from HfO2 - La2O3 melts contained 31.6,34.2 mol% La2O3. The unit cell parameter increased linearly with La content from 10.736 to 10.789 Å. Drop solution calorimetric experiments were performed in 3Na2O·4MoO3 melt at 702°C. The enthalpies of formation from the oxides for pyrochlore phases are ,107.0±5.0 kJ/mol for Hf2La2O7 and ,48.8±4.7 kJ/mol for Hf2Gd2O7. The enthalpy of the pyrochlore,fluorite phase transition in Hf2Gd2O7 is 23.6±3.1 kJ/mol. [source] Study of the magnetic disaccommodation in La doped YIGPHYSICA STATUS SOLIDI (C) - CURRENT TOPICS IN SOLID STATE PHYSICS, Issue 10 2005C. Torres Abstract The relaxation of the initial magnetic permeability of La doped yttrium iron garnet (YIG) samples with nominal composition Y3,xLaxFe5O12 (0< x <0.6) is analysed in this work. The results show a very different behaviour depending on the sintering atmosphere used for the fabrication of the samples. Concretely, for the samples sintered in air, it just have been detected the usual relaxation peak found in YIG at 130 K. However, a new relaxation peak appears around room temperature for the samples sintered in CO2 atmosphere when the La content is at least of 0.3.
