Selected AbstractsShort-term harvest planning including scheduling of harvest crewsINTERNATIONAL TRANSACTIONS IN OPERATIONAL RESEARCH, Issue 5 2003J. Karlsson Abstract The problem we consider is short-term harvesting planning for a total planning period of 4,6 weeks where we want to decide the harvest sequences or schedules for harvest crews. A schedule is an order or sequence of harvest areas assigned to each crew. The harvesting of areas is planned in order to meet industrial demand. The total cost includes harvesting, transportation, and storage. One considerable cost is due to the quality reduction of logs stored at harvest areas. There are a number of restrictions to be considered. Areas are of varying size and the composition of assortments in each area is different. Each harvest team has different skills, a different home base, and different production capacity. Another aspect is the road network. There is a cost related to road opening (restoring, snow removal). In this paper, we develop a mixed integer programming (MIP) model for the problem. The schedules are represented by 0/1 variables. With a limited number of schedules, the problem can be solved by a commercial MIP solver. We have also developed a heuristic solution approach that provides high-quality integer solutions within a distinct time limit to be used when more schedules are used. Computational results from a major Swedish forest company are presented. [source] Pregnancy Acceptance, Parenting Stress, and Toddler Attachment in Low-Income Black FamiliesJOURNAL OF MARRIAGE AND FAMILY, Issue 1 2007Jean M. Ispa Questionnaire items tapping feelings about pregnancy were administered to 173 young, low-income primiparous Black mothers who either were pregnant or had delivered within the past year. A factor analysis indicated that 11 items together measured mothers' acceptance of the pregnancies that resulted in the births of their first children. Links to mothers' later parenting stress, warmth, and their toddlers' attachment security were explored. Pregnancy acceptance was a negative predictor of one aspect of maternal parenting stress (distress resulting from feelings that parenting is burdensome) and a positive predictor of toddler attachment security. It did not, however, predict another aspect of parenting stress (feelings that interactions with children are not enjoyable) or maternal warmth. [source] Differential effect of materials for surface hemostasis on red blood cell morphologyMICROSCOPY RESEARCH AND TECHNIQUE, Issue 10 2008Carr J. Smith Abstract The design of devices for surface (topical) hemostasis has been based on maximizing activation of platelets and accelerating coagulation pathways. The studies reported herein examine another aspect of blood contact with topical hemostasis materials, i.e., surface binding of red blood cells (RBCs) and related alterations in RBC morphology. Whole blood was allowed to contact poly- N -acetyl glucosamine (pGlcNAc) containing materials: pGlcNAc nanofibers with parallel polymer alignment (,-pGlcNAc), chitin, and chitosan. The effect on RBC morphology and function via contact with the artificial surfaces on the cell's morphology was examined with scanning and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). ,-pGlcNAc was found to densely bind RBCs and induce a stomatocytic-like morphology. Chitin and chitosan also bound RBCs, but with approximately 10-fold lower levels and with less distinct general morphologies. ,-pGlcNAc is thus unique in the nature of its interaction with RBCs. These studies indicate that the differential ability of various materials to bind and alter the morphology of RBCs at the artificial surface interface with blood is an important consideration in the design of devices for surface hemostasis. [source] The seventh servant: The implications of a truth drive in Bions theory of ,O'THE INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF PSYCHOANALYSIS, Issue 5 2004JAMES S. GROTSTEIN Drawing upon Bion's published works on the subjects of truth, dreaming, alpha-function and transformations in ,O', the author independently postulates that there exists a ,truth instinctual drive' that subserves a truth principle, the latter of which is associated with the reality principle. Further, he suggests, following Bion's postulation, that ,alpha-function' and dreaming/phantasying constitute unconscious thinking processes and that they mediate the activity of this ,truth drive' (quest, pulsion), which the author hypothesizes constitutes another aspect of a larger entity that also includes the epistemophilic component drive. It purportedly seeks and transmits as well as includes what Bion (1965, pp. 147-9) calls ,O', the ,Absolute Truth, Ultimate Reality, O' (also associated with infi nity, noumena or things-in-themselves, and ,godhead') (1970, p. 26). It is further hypothesized that the truth drive functions in collaboration with an ,unconscious consciousness' that is associated with the faculty of ,attention', which is also known as ,intuition'. It is responsive to internal psychical reality and constitutes Bion's ,seventh servant'. O, the ultimate landscape of psychoanalysis, has many dimensions, but the one that seems to interest Bion is that of the emotional experience of the analysand's and the analyst's ,evolving O' respectively (1970, p. 52) during the analytic session. The author thus hypothesizes that a sense of truth presents itself to the subject as a quest for truth which has the quality and force of an instinctual drive and constitutes the counterpart to the epistemophilic drive. This ,truth quest' or ,drive' is hypothesized to be the source of the generation of the emotional truth of one's ongoing experiences, both conscious and unconscious. It is proposed that emotions are beacons of truth in regard to the acceptance of reality. The concepts of an emotional truth drive and a truth principle would help us understand why analysands are able to accept analysts' interpretations that favor the operation of the reality principle over the pleasure principle,because of what is postulated as their overriding adaptive need for truth. Ultimately, it would seem that Bion's legacy of truth aims at integrating fi nite man with infi nite man. [source] The Definition of TerrorismANALYSES OF SOCIAL ISSUES & PUBLIC POLICY, Issue 1 2002Charles L. Ruby This article addresses the definition of terrorism. It is intended to provide a foundation from which to understand the recent attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Although terrorism appears to be much less dangerous than other forms of violence, it seems to command more attention. In order to respond to terrorism, a clear definition is necessary. Terrorism is defined by Title 22 of the U.S. Code as politically motivated violence perpetrated in a clandestine manner against noncombatants. Experts on terrorism also include another aspect in the definition: the act is committed in order to create a fearful state of mind in an audience different from the victims. Whether or not an act is considered terrorism also depends on whether a legal, moral, or behavioral perspective is used to interpret the act. If a legal or moral perspective is used, the values of the interpreter are the focus rather than the act itself. A behavioral perspective appears to be best suited for interpreting and reacting to terrorism. [source] Strong HLA-DR antigen expression on cancer cells relates to better prognosis of colorectal cancer patients: Possible involvement of c-myc suppression by interferon-,in situCANCER SCIENCE, Issue 1 2006Kazuyuki Matsushita Strong HLA-DR antigen expression on cancer cells relates to better prognosis of colorectal cancer patients, although the precise mechanism is controversial. From an immunological point of view, HLA-DR antigen, induced by interferon (IFN)-,, is required for tumor-associated antigen recognition by CD4+ T cells. For instance, as reported previously, the expression of HLA-DR antigen in normal colorectal epithelium immediately adjacent to cancer coincided significantly with the existence of IFN-, mRNA in the tissue. From another aspect, IFN-, has been revealed to suppress c-myc expression in vivo through a stat1-dependent mechanism, which is important for cell growth, cell cycle and chromosome instability. In the present study, strong HLA-DR-positive expression on cancer cells was significantly related to better prognosis for colorectal cancer patients. High IFN-, mRNA expression in situ indicated significantly less activation of c-myc mRNA expression. Further, HLA-DR antigen expression in cancer cells, as well as Dukes stages, was an independent factor for better long-term survival by multivariate analysis. Taken together, IFN-,, which induces HLA-DR antigens on the cell surface, also suppresses c-myc expression in situ, and is a possible non-immunological mechanism involved in the better long-term survival of colorectal cancer patients.
