Friberg There is a growing body of evidence supporting the idea that nerve growth factor (NGF) may be involved in the development of asthma-associated symptoms, such as airway hyper-responsiveness. Increased levels of NGF have recently been described in serum and in the airways of asthmatics. We have examined whether exhaled nitric oxide (NO) levels might be altered during the increased airway responses upon NGF treatment in guinea-pigs in vivo. Intravenous (i.v.) administration of histamine normally elicits a rapid peak in insufflation pressure (IP) and in exhaled NO, followed by a period of decreased concentrations of exhaled NO. Anaesthetized guinea-pigs were pre-treated intravenously with either saline, 4 or 80 ng kg,1 NGF 30 min before i.v. challenge with 16 ,g kg,1 histamine. At 80 ng kg,1 NGF significantly enhanced the airway obstruction caused by histamine, whereas the peak acute increase in exhaled NO was not enhanced. Following the increase, came a rapid drop, an effect enforced in the NGF treated animals. Subsequently, the time to return to 90% of resting exhaled NO was increased, from 12 min in saline-treated animals to 48 min in NGF-treated animals. Our data confirm that NGF can enhance airway responses to histamine. Moreover, our study shows a decrease in exhaled NO following a histamine challenge, an effect enhanced by NGF. A reduced ability to release exhaled NO may be a mechanism for increased airway responses during elevated NGF levels. The interaction between NGF and airway NO formation, and its relation to airway responses, merit further investigation. [source] Optimal Design of the Online Auction Channel: Analytical, Empirical, and Computational Insights,DECISION SCIENCES, Issue 4 2002Ravi Bapna ABSTRACT The focus of this study is on business-to-consumer (B2C) online auctions made possible by the advent of electronic commerce over an open-source, ubiquitous Internet Protocol (IP) computer network. This work presents an analytical model that characterizes the revenue generation process for a popular B2C online auction, namely, Yankee auctions. Such auctions sell multiple identical units of a good to multiple buyers using an ascending and open auction mechanism. The methodologies used to validate the analytical model range from empirical analysis to simulation. A key contribution of this study is the design of a partitioning scheme of the discrete valuation space of the bidders such that equilibrium points with higher revenue structures become identifiable and feasible. Our analysis indicates that the auctioneers are, most of the time, far away from the optimal choice of key control factors such as the bid increment, resulting in substantial losses in a market with already tight margins. With this in mind, we put forward a portfolio of tools, varying in their level of abstraction and information intensity requirements, which help auctioneers maximize their revenues. [source] Effects of buspirone and alprazolam treatment on the startle-potentiated startle responseDEPRESSION AND ANXIETY, Issue 3 2004Randall L. Commissaris Ph.D. Abstract The startle potentiated startle (SPS) paradigm has been reported to be an effective procedure for studying the conditioned enhancement of acoustic startle in the absence of electric shocks or extinction. This study examines the effects of two anxiolytic treatments, buspirone and alprazolam, on this SPS effect. Subjects were tested in the SPS paradigm 2 days a week (Monday and Thursday) for 10 weeks. Each startle test session consisted of 10 Noise Alone trials (115 dB acoustic noise burst presented for 40 ms) and 10 Light+Noise trials (115 dB acoustic stimuli presented during the latter 40 ms of a 3,540 ms period in which a 15-watt light was illuminated). Although there was no difference in startle amplitude on Noise Alone trials when compared to Light+Noise trials initially, by the end of the first test session and continuing throughout the duration of the experiment, startle amplitude on Light+Noise trials was significantly (approximately 50,75%) greater than on Noise Alone trials. After five control (i.e., no injection) SPS test sessions, once-weekly drug challenges were conducted over the course of 7 weeks. In these weekly drug challenges, subjects received acute treatment with various doses of the benzodiazepine anxiolytic alprazolam (0.25, 0.5, 1.0 mg/kg) or the novel anxiolytic buspirone (1.0, 2.0, 4.0 mg/kg); subjects also received vehicle treatment (0.5% methylcellulose) on one treatment day. All treatments were administered intraperitoneally (IP), 15 min before the start of startle testing. Consistent with previous reports, buspirone increased and alprazolam decreased startle amplitude on the Noise Alone trials; these effects were dose-related. Both agents reduced the magnitude of the SPS effect when it was expressed as the Light+Noise startle amplitude minus the Noise Alone startle amplitude. [source] INAR(1) modeling of overdispersed count series with an environmental applicationENVIRONMETRICS, Issue 4 2008Harry Pavlopoulos Abstract This paper is concerned with a novel version of the INAR(1) model, a non-linear auto-regressive Markov chain on ,, with innovations following a finite mixture distribution of Poisson laws. For , the stationary marginal probability distribution of the chain is overdispersed relative to a Poisson, thus making INAR(1) suitable for modeling time series of counts with arbitrary overdispersion. The one-step transition probability function of the chain is also a finite mixture, of m Poisson-Binomial laws, facilitating likelihood-based inference for model parameters. An explicit EM-algorithm is devised for inference by maximization of a conditional likelihood. Alternative options for inference are discussed along with criteria for selecting m. Integer-valued prediction (IP) is developed by a parametric bootstrap approach to ,coherent' forecasting, and a certain test statistic based on predictions is introduced for assessing performance of the fitted model. The proposed model is fitted to time series of counts of pixels where spatially averaged rain rate exceeds a given threshold level, illustrating its capabilities in challenging cases of highly overdispersed count data. [source] The Effects of Ascorbic Acid on Penicillin-induced Epileptiform Activity in RatsEPILEPSIA, Issue 7 2007Mustafa Ayyildiz Summary:,Purpose: Epileptic seizure results from excessive discharge in a population of hyperexcitable neurons. A number of studies help to document the effects of active oxygen free radical scavengers such as ,-tocopherol or ascorbic acid (vitamin C). In the present study, we examined the effects of ascorbic acid, at the six different doses, on penicillin-induced epileptiform activity. Methods: A single microinjection of penicillin (2.5 ,l, 500 units, intracortically) into the left sensorimotor cortex induced epileptiform activity within 2,5 min, progressing to full seizure activity lasting ,3,5 h. In the first set of experiments, 30 min after penicillin injection, six different doses of ascorbic acid (25, 50, 100, 200, 400, or 800 mg/kg) were administered intraperitoneally (IP). The other group of animals received the effective dose of ascorbic acid (100 mg/kg, IP) for 7 days. Ascorbic acid administration was stopped 24 h before penicillin treatment. Another group of rats received the effective dose of ascorbic acid (100 mg/kg, IP) 30 min before penicillin treatment. In the second set of experiments, the lipid peroxidation (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) levels of brain were measured in the control, control + ascorbic acid, penicillin, and penicillin + ascorbic acid groups. Results: Ascorbic acid, at the low dose (50, 100 mg/kg, 30 min after penicillin injection), decreased both the frequency and amplitude of penicillin-induced epileptiform activity in rats. Ascorbic acid, at intermediate doses (200, 400 mg/kg, 30 min after penicillin injection), decreased the frequency of epileptiform activity without changing the amplitude. Ascorbic acid, at the lowest dose (25 mg/kg) and highest dose (800 mg/kg) (30 min after penicillin injection), did not change either the frequency or amplitude of epileptiform activity. Ascorbic acid, at the low dose (100 mg/kg) was the most effective dose in changing the frequency and amplitude of penicillin-induced epileptiform activity. Pretreatment with ascorbic acid (100 mg/kg) 30 min before penicillin treatment caused a significant delay in the onset of penicillin-induced epileptiform activity. Pretreatment with ascorbic acid (100 mg/kg) for 7 days did not change the latency of epileptiform activity. The most effective dose of ascorbic acid (100 mg/kg) prevented both the decrease in GSH level and the increase in lipid peroxidation level (MDA) occurring after penicillin-induced epileptiform activity. Conclusions: These data indicate that ascorbic acid has neuroprotective activity against penicillin-induced epileptiform electrocorticogram activity. [source] Alcohol tolerance and nicotine cross-tolerance in adolescent miceADDICTION BIOLOGY, Issue 2 2001Marcelo F. Lopez The present experiment was designed to evaluate the development of tolerance to alcohol and cross-tolerance to nicotine in adolescent mice. C57BL/6J mice (30,40 days old) were injected IP with alcohol (2.5 g/kg) for 4 consecutive days. A control group received four saline injections. On the test day, all subjects received an alcohol injection. Tolerance to alcohol's hypothermic effect was observed. Mice (male and female) exposed to alcohol for the 4 previous days showed less hypothermic response to an alcohol challenge than animals injected for 4 days with saline and then challenged with alcohol. Tolerance to alcohol's motor incoordinating effects and differences in blood alcohol concentrations were not observed. Thirty days following alcohol treatment, the same mice received a single nicotine injection (1 mg/kg) to assess cross-tolerance. Nicotine's effect on locomotor activity (open field test) and rectal temperature varied as a function of prior adolescent alcohol exposure and gender. Specifically, female mice who had been exposed to alcohol administrations were more resistant to nicotine's effect on locomotion and temperature than saline-treated animals. In summary, these data demonstrate that adolescent mice develop tolerance to some, but not all, alcohol-induced responses, and that female mice are cross-tolerant to nicotine's effects on temperature and activity. [source] Estimation of net nitrogen flux between the atmosphere and a semi-natural grassland ecosystem in HungaryEUROPEAN JOURNAL OF SOIL SCIENCE, Issue 5 2010A. Machon The aim of this work is to estimate the net N balance (deposition , emission) between the atmosphere and a semi-arid, semi-natural grassland (Bugac station, Central Hungary, CarboEurope IP, NitroEurope IP level 3 site). Dry deposition of N compounds has been determined by the inferential method, based on continuous monitoring of NO2 gas and daily 24-hour concentration measurements of HNO3 vapour, NH3 gas, and NH4+ and NO3, particles, using dry deposition velocities from the literature, measured above surfaces with the same characteristics as Bugac station. The bi-directional flux of NH3 within the atmosphere and the canopy (excluding soil emission) has also been estimated by the inferential method. Wet deposition of nitrate and ammonium ions was calculated on the basis of daily precipitation sampling and concentration measurements of nitrate and ammonium ions. To estimate the soil-atmosphere exchange of different gaseous N forms (N2, NO, N2O, NH3), the DNDC model was used as validated by the chamber measurements of NO and N2O soil emission fluxes. Soil emissions of NO and N2O have been determined by dynamic and static soil chamber methods, respectively. The measurement and modelling activity covers a complete year. Using the measured and modelled data, the calculated N balance at Bugac station between August 2006 and July 2007 is estimated at ,8.8 kg N ha,1 year,1 (deposition) as a sum of the deposition and emission terms (,10.4 and 1.6 kg N ha,1 year,1, respectively). Due to the warm and dry weather during the examined period, wet fluxes were substantially lower than usual, which may also have altered the regular yearly course of dry deposition and emission. [source] Comparison between objective and subjective measurements of quality of service over an Optical Wide Area networkEUROPEAN TRANSACTIONS ON TELECOMMUNICATIONS, Issue 3 2008Francesco Matera The introduction of intelligence for management and control of the quality of service (QoS) are key issues for the evolution of the next generation IP optical network based on Ethernet technology. A test bed of a core-access network was implemented to investigate such issues and in this paper, the authors report measurements concerning the QoS of multimedia services for different traffic conditions. The network was implemented with a differentiated service over Multi-Protocol Label Switch (MPLS) architecture; it consists of a real optical network based on core routers with optical Gigabit Ethernet (GBE) interfaces connected by means of long single mode fibres (about 50\,km), contained in an installed cable between Rome and Pomezia. The network is based on different access devices, but in this paper we only refer to an access based on Fibre To The building (FTTB) architecture. The QoS was investigated both in terms of network (or objective) tests that include packet loss, jitter, one way delay and throughput measurements and perceptive (or subjective) tests that conversely are based on the evaluation of user perception. The services under test mainly consisted of video streams that circulated in the network according to the switching operations based in the IP differentiated service over MPLS technique that allowed us to guarantee the QoS for some class of service, also in the presence of network overload. Particular attention was given to the correlation between objective and subjective measurements. Furthermore, in order to have a complete analysis about QoS of real networks, measurements were performed also in the presence of restoration operations for link failures; in particular we compare the results in the case of conventional IP network restoration with a procedure proposed by us and based on a link switching activated by the loss of signal command coming from the routers. The domain investigated is a wired radio access network based on the Internet protocol (IP). This framework is evaluated by simulation using the popular network simulator ns-2. The framework is adaptive to changes in the network load and supports multiple types of service. All traffic-engineering decisions are made by edge routers (ERs) at the rim of the network domain. Multiple disjoint paths are configured between those ERs. Network state information is gathered in two different fashions. We evaluate a scheme based on the states of the queues on each alternative path and a scheme based on end-to-end probe packet transmission characteristics on each alternative path. Both schemes are compared to a shortest path first (SPF) routing approach. However, packets traveling in a network are subject to a variety of delays that degrade severely the quality of service in real-time applications. This paper presents a general packet jitter-assessment methodology for a multi-node path in the presence of heavy-tailed traffic. Using the extreme-value theory, it is shown that delay performance is governed by a proposed networking-processing factor |T|lambda dependent on the traffic characteristics, the processing time along the path segments and the number of nodes in a route. |T|lambda allows the establishment of design constraints and the definition of a feasibility space for a routing algorithm in order to guarantee a quality of service (QoS). [source] QoS in IntServ-based IP networks: the peak rate policingEUROPEAN TRANSACTIONS ON TELECOMMUNICATIONS, Issue 4 2003Lorenzo Battaglia In the last few years, IP has moved towards resource reservation, with the task to guarantee in the future Quality of Service (QoS). This has led to flow admission control algorithms based on the negotiation of standardised traffic parameters. QoS can be guaranteed in any network, a priori from the used technology, only if the used admission control algorithm wisely shares the network's resources among the users. Any admission control algorithm on its turn can do so, only if every user respects the negotiated traffic parameters. Since any user could, maliciously or not, send at a higher rate than negotiated, i.e. use a higher share of resources than the negotiated one, in every network in which admission control is performed, a policing algorithm is used. An ideal policer should guarantee to reject no packet of a well-behaved user and police contract violation as rigidly as possible. All this independently of the characteristics of the monitored stream and of the background traffic. This holds also for Integrated Services (IS) based IP networks. In these networks, every user negotiates a peak and an average rate. In this paper we present the solution to the peak rate policing issue. We adapt the Generic Cell Rate Algorithm (GCRA), well-known policer used in ATM networks, to police the peak rate of flows of packets with variable length. We intuitively call this modified GCRA Generic Packet Rate Algorithm (GPRA) and dimension its parameters so that independently of the characteristics of the policed flow and of the background traffic, no packets of a well-behaved user are rejected and that the flows of any misbehaving user are rigidly policed. Beritelli In the last few years an increasing amount of attention has been paid to technologies for the transmission of voice over IP (VoIP). At present, the UDP transport protocol is used to provide this service. However, when the same bottleneck link is shared with TCP flows, and in the presence of a high network load and congestion, UDP sources capture most of the bandwidth, strongly penalizing TCP sources. To solve this problem some congestion control should be introduced for UDP traffic as well, in such a way that this traffic becomes TCP-friendly. In this perspective, several TCP-friendly algorithms have been proposed in the literature. Among them, the most promising candidates for the immediate future are RAP and TFRC. However, although these algorithms were introduced to support real-time applications on the Internet, up to now the only target in optimizing them has been that of achieving fairness with TCP flows in the network. No attention has been paid to the applications using them, and in particular, to the quality of service (QoS) perceived by their users. The target of this paper is to analyze the problem of transmitting voice over IP when voice sources use one of these TCP-friendly algorithms. With this aim, a VoIP system architecture is introduced and the characteristics of each its elements are discussed. To optimize the system, a multirate voice encoder is used so as to be feasible to work over a TCP layer, and a modification of both RAP and TFRC is proposed. Finally, in order to analyze the performance of the proposed system architecture and to compare the modified RAP and TFRC with the original algorithms, the sources have been modeled with an arrival process modulated by a Markov chain, and the model has been used to generate traffic in a simulation study performed with the ns-2 network simulator. Bhattacharya ABSTRACT We present results from the resolution and sensitivity analysis of 1D DC resistivity and IP sounding data using a non-linear inversion. The inversion scheme uses a theoretically correct Metropolis,Gibbs' sampling technique and an approximate method using numerous models sampled by a global optimization algorithm called very fast simulated annealing (VFSA). VFSA has recently been found to be computationally efficient in several geophysical parameter estimation problems. Unlike conventional simulated annealing (SA), in VFSA the perturbations are generated from the model parameters according to a Cauchy-like distribution whose shape changes with each iteration. This results in an algorithm that converges much faster than a standard SA. In the course of finding the optimal solution, VFSA samples several models from the search space. All these models can be used to obtain estimates of uncertainty in the derived solution. This method makes no assumptions about the shape of an a posteriori probability density function in the model space. Here, we carry out a VFSA-based sensitivity analysis with several synthetic and field sounding data sets for resistivity and IP. The resolution capability of the VFSA algorithm as seen from the sensitivity analysis is satisfactory. The interpretation of VES and IP sounding data by VFSA, incorporating resolution, sensitivity and uncertainty of layer parameters, would generally be more useful than the conventional best-fit techniques. [source] A new method to discriminate between a valid IP response and EM coupling effectsGEOPHYSICAL PROSPECTING, Issue 6 2002Jianping Xiang ABSTRACT The problem of discrimination between a valid induced polarization (IP) response and electromagnetic (EM) coupling effects is considered and an effective solution is provided. First, a finite dimensional approximation to the Cole-Cole model is investigated. Using the least-squares approach, the parameters of the approximate model are obtained. Next, based on the analysis of overvoltage, a finite dimensional structure of the IP model is produced. Using this overvoltage-based structure, a specific finite dimensional approximation of the Cole-Cole model is proposed. Summarizing the analysis of the finite dimensional IP model, it is concluded that the proposed IP model, which fits the field data much better than the traditional Cole-Cole model, is essentially an RC-circuit. From a circuit-analysis point of view, it is well known that an electromagnetic effect can be described by an RL-circuit. The simulation results on experimental data support this conception. According to this observation, a new method to discriminate between a valid IP response and EM coupling effects is proposed as follows: (i) use a special finite dimensional model for IP,EM systems; (ii) obtain the parameters for the model using a least-squares approach; (iii) separate RC-type terms and RL-type terms , the first models the IP behaviour, the latter represents the EM part. Simulation on experimental data shows that the method is very simple and effective. [source] Depth of detection of highly conducting and volume polarizable targets using induced polarizationGEOPHYSICAL PROSPECTING, Issue 5 2000A. Apparao We define the apparent frequency effect in induced polarization (IP) as the relative difference between apparent resistivities measured using DC excitation on the one hand and high-frequency excitation (when the IP effect vanishes) on the other. Assuming a given threshold for the minimum detectable anomaly in the apparent frequency effect, the depth of detection of a target by IP can be defined as that depth below which the target response is lower than the threshold for a given electrode array. Physical modelling shows that for the various arrays, the depth of detection of a highly conducting and volume polarizable target agrees closely with the depth of detection of an infinitely conducting and non-polarized body of the same shape and size. The greatest depth of detection is obtained with a two-electrode array, followed by a three-electrode array, while the smallest depth of detection is obtained with a Wenner array when the array spread is in-line (i.e. perpendicular to the strike direction). The depth of detection with a Wenner array improves considerably and is almost equal to that of a two-electrode array when the array spread is broadside (i.e. along the strike direction). Connors Abstract A major role for Müller cells in the retina is to buffer changes in the extracellular K+ concentration ([K+]o) resulting from light-evoked neuronal activity. The primary K+ conductance in Müller cells is the inwardly rectifying K+ channel Kir4.1. Since this channel is constitutively active, K+ can enter or exit Müller cells depending on the state of the [K+]o. This process of [K+]o buffering by Müller cells ("K+ siphoning") is enhanced by the precise accumulation of these K+ channels at discrete subdomains of Müller cell membranes. Specifically, Kir4.1 is localized to the perivascular processes of Müller cells in animals with vascular retinas and to the endfeet of Müller cells in all species examined. The water channel aquaporin-4 (AQP4) also appears to be important for [K+]o buffering and is expressed in Müller cells in a very similar subcellular distribution pattern to that of Kir4.1. To gain a better understanding of how Müller cells selectively target K+ and water channels to discrete membrane subdomains, we addressed the question of whether Kir4.1 and AQP4 associate with the dystrophin,glycoprotein complex (DGC) in the mammalian retina. Immunoprecipitation (IP) experiments were utilized to show that Kir4.1 and AQP4 are associated with DGC proteins in rat retina. Furthermore, AQP4 was also shown to co-precipitate with Kir4.1, suggesting that both channels are tethered together by the DGC in Müller cells. John Dobbs Abstract We challenge the concept of idiopathic parkinsonism (IP) as inevitably progressive neurodegeneration, proposing a natural history of sequential microbial insults with predisposing host response. Proof-of-principle that infection can contribute to IP was provided by case studies and a placebo-controlled efficacy study of Helicobacter eradication. "Malignant" IP appears converted to "benign", but marked deterioration accompanies failure. Similar benefit on brady/hypokinesia from eradicating "low-density" infection favors autoimmunity. Although a minority of UK probands are urea breath test positive for Helicobacter, the predicted probability of having the parkinsonian label depends on the serum H. pylori antibody profile, with clinically relevant gradients between this "discriminant index" and disease burden and progression. In IP, H. pylori antibodies discriminate for persistently abnormal bowel function, and specific abnormal duodenal enterocyte mitochondrial morphology is described in relation to H. pylori infection. Slow intestinal transit manifests as constipation from the prodrome. Diarrhea may flag secondary small-intestinal bacterial overgrowth. This, coupled with genetically determined intense inflammatory response, might explain evolution from brady/hypokinetic to rigidity-predominant parkinsonism. [source] Induction of cellular resistance against Kupffer cell,derived oxidant stress: A novel concept of hepatoprotection by ischemic preconditioningHEPATOLOGY, Issue 2 2003Rolf J. Schauer Ischemic preconditioning (IP) triggers protection of the liver from prolonged subsequent ischemia. However, the underlying protective mechanisms are largely unknown. We investigated whether and how IP protects the liver against reperfusion injury caused by Kupffer cell (KC)-derived oxidants. IP before 90 minutes of warm ischemia of rat livers in vivo significantly reduced serum alanine aminotransferase (AST) levels and leukocyte adherence to sinusoids and postsinusoidal venules during reperfusion. This protective effect was mimicked by postischemic intravenous infusion of glutathione (GSH), an antioxidative strategy against KC-derived H2O2. Interestingly, no additional protection was achieved by infusion of GSH to preconditioned animals. These findings and several additional experiments strongly suggest IP mediated antioxidative effects: IP prevented oxidant cell injury in isolated perfused rat livers after selective KC activation by zymosan. Moreover, IP prevented cell injury and pertubations of the intracellular GSH/GSSG redox system caused by direct infusion of H2O2 (0.5 mmol/L). IP-mediated resistance against H2O2 could neither be blocked by the adenosine A2a antagonist DMPX nor mimicked by A2a agonist CGS21680. In contrast, H2O2 resistance was abolished by the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38 MAPK) inhibitor SB203580, but induced when p38 MAPK was directly activated by anisomycin. In conclusion, we propose a novel concept of hepatoprotection by IP: protection of liver cells by enhancing their resistance against KC-derived H2O2. [source] Microdeletion/duplication at the Xq28 IP locus causes a de novo IKBKG/NEMO/IKKgamma exon4_10 deletion in families with incontinentia pigmenti,HUMAN MUTATION, Issue 9 2009Fusco Francesca Abstract The Incontinentia Pigmenti (IP) locus contains the IKBKG/NEMO/IKKgamma gene and its truncated pseudogene copy, IKBKGP/deltaNEMO. The major genetic defect in IP is a heterozygous exon4_10 IKBKG deletion (IKBKGdel) caused by a recombination between two consecutive MER67B repeats. We analyzed 91 IP females carrying the IKBKGdel, 59 of whom carrying de novo mutations (65%). In eight parents, we found two recurrent nonpathological variants of IP locus, which were also present as rare polymorphism in control population: the IKBKGPdel, corresponding to the exon4_10 deletion in the pseudogene, and the MER67Bdup, that replicates the exon4_10 region downstream of the normal IKBKG gene. Using quantitative DNA analysis and microsatellite mapping, we established that both variants might promote the generation of the pathological IKBKGdel. Indeed, in family IP-516, the exon4_10 deletion was repositioned in the same allele from the pseudogene to the gene, whereas in family IP-688, the MER67Bdup generated the pathological IKBKGdel by recombination between two direct nonadjacent MER67Bs. Moreover, we found an instance of somatic recombination in a MER67Bdup variant, creating the IKBKGdel in an IP male. Our data suggest that the IP locus undergoes recombination producing recurrent variants that might be "at risk" of generating de novo IKBKGdel by NAHR during either meiotic or mitotic division. Obeidat Abstract We propose an opportunistic cross-layer architecture for adaptive support of Voice over IP in multi-hop wireless LANs. As opposed to providing high call quality, we target emergencies where it is important to communicate, even if at low quality, no matter the harshness of the network conditions. With the importance of delay on voice quality in mind, we select adaptation parameters that control the ratio of real-time traffic load to available bandwidth. This is achieved in two ways: minimizing the load and maximizing the bandwidth. The PHY/MAC interaction improves the use of the spectral resources by opportunistically exploiting rate-control and packet bursts, while the MAC/application interaction controls the demand per source through voice compression. The objective is to maximize the number of calls admitted that satisfy the end-to-end delay budget. The performance of the protocol is studied extensively in the ns-2 network simulator. Results indicate that call quality degrades as load increases and overlonger paths, and a larger packet size improves performance. For long paths having low-quality channels, forward error correction, header compression, and relaxing the delay budget of the system are required to maintain call admission and quality. The purpose of the protocol is to increase throughput and to decrease the packet transmission delay of IP packets over optical networks in a metropolitan area network. This protocol avoids both packet collision and packet fragmentation. In order to improve the utilization of the network, the packets transmitted from a local area network are first pre-classified into various class queues of an access point (AP) according to their length. After checking the available space based on the wavelength received by the receivers of the AP, the packets in the queues are transmitted. An analytical model is developed to evaluate the performance of the protocol, with simulation results showing good network efficiency. The proposed network has short-term variations that introduce unfairness conditions. This problem could be overcome by assigning a quota on individual queues to allow all queues fair access. CES depends on reliable and high-quality timing for operations. In the time division multiplexing (TDM) world, whether plesiochronous digital hierarchy (PDH), synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH) or synchronous optical network (SONET) based, timing and synchronization is inherent in the design of the network. However, when timing critical services such PDH and SDH/SONET are carried over packet network (e.g. IP, Ethernet, etc.), the timing element is lost and has to be carried across the packet network by other means. A well-known and widely implemented technique for clock recovery in CES is one that is based on packet inter-arrival time (sometimes called time difference of arrival) averaging. The technique is very simple to implement but provides good performance only when packet losses and packet delay variation (PDV) are very low and well controlled. This technique has been extensively analysed through simulations but has not been fully characterized analytically with correlated traffic in the literature. In this paper, we provide a full analytical examination of this well-known clock recovery technique. We analyse the effects of correlation of the delay variation in the traffic stream on the quality of the clock recovered by a receiver. This paper provides a comparison of WIP with cellular IP (CIP) and mobile IP (MIP), and identifies the main requirements for a broadband-accessed network-based GW that supports WIP mobility. The paper then evaluates GW-contributed handoff message processing delay in the WIP architecture through an analytical system model and OPNET simulation model, and provides a comparison of the GW-contributed handoff message processing delays for non-preemptive vs preemptive queuing schemes. Both analytical and simulation results show that WIP handoff message processing delay at the GW has negligible impact on the overall system delay. Finally, this paper presents the simulation results of the fast routing table lookup and forwarding speed on the GW overall performance, which can assist service providers in the challenging implementation issues that they face. First, we present a concise overview of relevant aspects of satellite networks to delay-sensitive traffic and routing. Then, in order to improve the system performance for delay-sensitive traffic, specifically Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), a novel adaptive routing mechanism in two-layered satellite network considering the network's real-time information is introduced and evaluated. Adaptive Routing Protocol for Quality of Service (ARPQ) utilizes OBP and avoids congestion by distributing traffic load between medium-Earth orbit and low-Earth orbit layers. We utilize a prioritized queueing policy to satisfy quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of delay-sensitive applications while evading non-real-time traffic suffer low performance level. The simulation results verify that multi-layered satellite networks with OBP capabilities and QoS mechanisms are essential for feasibility of packet-based high-quality delay-sensitive services which are expected to be the vital components of next-generation communications networks. Traffic flows characterized by different performance requirements at the IP layer are conveyed to the IEEE 802.16 MAC layer. This process leads to the need for providing the necessary bandwidth at the MAC layer so that the traffic flow can receive the requested QoS. The proposed control algorithm is based on real measures processed by a neural network and it is studied within the framework of optimal bandwidth allocation and Call Admission Control in the presence of statistically heterogeneous flows. Specific implementation details are provided to match the application of the control algorithm by using the existing features of 802.16 request,grant protocol acting at MAC layer. With circuit emulation over IP, for instance, TDM data received from an external device at the edge of an IP network is converted to IP packets, sent through the IP network, passed out of the IP network to its destination, and reassembled into TDM bit stream. Clock synchronization is very important for CES. This paper presents a clock synchronization scheme based on a double exponential filtering technique and a linear process model. The linear process model is used to describe the behaviour of clock synchronization errors between a transmitter and a receiver. In the clock synchronization scheme, the transmitter periodically sends explicit time indications or timestamps to a receiver to enable the receiver to synchronize its local clock to the transmitter's clock. A phase-locked loop (PLL) at the receiver processes the transmitted timestamps to generate timing signal for the receiver. The PLL has a simple implementation and provides both fast responsiveness (i.e. fast acquisition of transmitter frequency at a receiver) and significant jitter reduction in the locked state. The current Internet as of today is still used as a best effort environment with no quality guarantees. An IP-based Internet that supports different QoS requirements for different applications has been evolving for the past few years. Video streams are bursty in nature due to the instant variability of the video content being encoded. To help mitigate the transport of bursty video streams with minimal loss of information, rate-adaptive shapers (RASs) are usually being used to reduce the burstiness and therefore help preserve the desired quality. When transporting video over a QoS IP network, each stream is classified under a specific traffic profile to which it must conform, to avoid packet loss and picture quality degradation. In this paper we study, evaluate and propose RASs for the transport of video over a QoS IP network. We utilize the encoding video parameters for choosing the appropriate configuration needed to support the real-time transport of Variable Bit Rate (VBR) encoded video streams. The performance evaluation of the different RASs is based on the transport of MPEG-4 video streams encoded as VBR. The performance is studied based on looking at the effect of various parameters associated with the RASs on the effectiveness of smoothing out the burstiness of video and minimizing the probability of packet loss. Recent years have witnessed heavy investment in this area in the commercial world. For VoIP to replace Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), it should provide voice quality comparable to circuit-switched PSTN networks. This paper addresses the mechanisms to guarantee VoIP quality of service (QoS). The focus is given to the call admission control, which blocks voice calls when the required resources are not available to guarantee the QoS for the call. We review call admission control approaches that can be applied to VoIP, and describe the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. In the second part of the paper, we present a measurement-based admission control scheme that achieves QoS in an efficient and scalable manner. The scheme uses voice traffic load measurements at each router link to compute link-level blocking policies for new call attempts. Then, these policies are translated into path-level blocking policies, which are applied to new call set-up requests.
