Selected AbstractsRapid Holocene climate changes in the North Atlantic: evidence from lake sediments from the Faroe IslandsBOREAS, Issue 1 2006CAMILLA S. ANDRESEN Holocene records from two lakes on the Faroe Islands were investigated to determine regional climatic variability: the fairly wind-exposed Lake Starvatn on Streymoy and the more sheltered Lake Lykkjuvötn on Sandoy. Sediment cores were analysed for content of biogenic silica, organic carbon and clastic material, and magnetic susceptibility. In addition, a new qualitative proxy for past lake ice cover and wind activity was developed using the flux of clastic grains that are larger than 255 ,m. Both long-term and short-term climatic developments were similar between the two lakes, suggesting a response to a regional climate signal. The long-term climate development is characterized by early Holocene rapid warming followed by Holocene climatic optimum conditions ending around 8300 cal. yr BP. A more open landscape as evidenced from increased sand grain influx in the period 8300,7200 cal. yr BP could reflect the aftermath of the 8200 cal. yr BP event, although the event itself is not recognized in either of the two lake records. From around 7200 cal. yr BP the mid-Holocene climate deterioration is observed and from 4200 cal. yr BP the climate deteriorated further with increased amplitude of centennial cooling episodes. [source] Acute atrial arrhythmogenesis in murine hearts following enhanced extracellular Ca2+ entry depends on intracellular Ca2+ storesACTA PHYSIOLOGICA, Issue 2 2010Y. Zhang Abstract Aim:, To investigate the effect of increases in extracellular Ca2+ entry produced by the L-type Ca2+ channel agonist FPL-64176 (FPL) upon acute atrial arrhythmogenesis in intact Langendorff-perfused mouse hearts and its dependence upon diastolic Ca2+ release from sarcoplasmic reticular Ca2+ stores. Methods:, Confocal microscope studies of Fluo-3 fluorescence in isolated atrial myocytes were performed in parallel with electrophysiological examination of Langendorff-perfused mouse hearts. Results:, Atrial myocytes stimulated at 1 Hz and exposed to FPL (0.1 ,m) initially showed (<10 min) frequent, often multiple, diastolic peaks following the evoked Ca2+ transients whose amplitudes remained close to control values. With continued pacing (>10 min) this reverted to a regular pattern of evoked transients with increased amplitudes but in which diastolic peaks were absent. Higher FPL concentrations (1.0 ,m) produced sustained and irregular patterns of cytosolic Ca2+ activity, independent of pacing. Nifedipine (0.5 ,m), and caffeine (1.0 mm) and cyclopiazonic acid (CPA) (0.15 ,m) pre-treatments respectively produced immediate and gradual reductions in the F/F0 peaks. Such nifedipine and caffeine, or CPA pre-treatments, abolished, or reduced, the effects of 0.1 and 1.0 ,m FPL on cytosolic Ca2+ signals. FPL (1.0 ,m) increased the incidence of atrial tachycardia and fibrillation in intact Langendorff-perfused hearts without altering atrial effective refractory periods. These effects were inhibited by nifedipine and caffeine, and reduced by CPA. Conclusion:, Enhanced extracellular Ca2+ entry exerts acute atrial arrhythmogenic effects that is nevertheless dependent upon diastolic Ca2+ release. These findings complement reports that associate established, chronic, atrial arrhythmogenesis with decreased overall inward Ca2+ current. SINGH Abstract Our aim is to study the effect of improvement in anemia on event-related potentials (ERPs; P300) as markers of cognitive dysfunction in predialysis and dialysis patients of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Thirty anemic patients of CKD (hemoglobin [Hb]<9 g%), 15 in the predialysis group (Group A), and 15 patients on biweekly hemodialysis (Group B) were recruited for the study. Patients of uremic encephalopathy, dyselectrolytemia, and those with hearing problems were excluded. Both groups were given recombinant human erythropoietin (rhuEPO) 100 IU/kg biweekly for 6 weeks by the subcutaneous route. No intervention was performed in the third control group (Group C), which consisted of 30 normal healthy volunteers. The improvement in Hb was assessed every 2 weeks, and the amplitude and latency of the P300 component of the ERPs were studied before initiating treatment and after 6 weeks of rhuEPO administration. There was a significant increase in Hb in both the study groups without any significant alteration in kidney functions. A significant reduction in P300 latency was noted in both the study groups after intervention. Similarly, the amplitude of P300 also increased in both study groups, but attained statistical significance for the dialysis group only. No significant changes were observed in the control group. Administration of EPO in patients of anemia with CKD resulted in a significant improvement in the electrophysiological markers of cognitive function in the form of increased amplitudes and decreased latencies of P300 in both predialysis and dialysis patients. [source] Multifocal electroretinography amplitudes increase after photocoagulation in areas with increased retinal thickness and hard exudatesACTA OPHTHALMOLOGICA, Issue 2 2010Monica Lövestam-Adrian Abstract. Purpose:, This study aimed to evaluate local response on multifocal electroretinography (mfERG) and to assess retinal thickness with optical coherence tomography (OCT) after focal laser treatment in areas with retinal oedema and exudates in patients with diabetic retinopathy. Methods:, Twelve diabetes patients (aged 60 ± 14 years, diabetes duration 16 ± 8 years) treated with focal or grid photocoagulation in areas with retinal oedema and/or exudates underwent mfERG and OCT before and 3 months after treatment. The average thickness (in ,m) in any of the nine sectors (defined according to the ETDRS) treated with photocoagulation was measured. Amplitudes and implicit times were analysed in corresponding areas on the mfERG. Results:, Mean mfERG amplitudes increased after photocoagulation (21.5 ± 8.0 nV/deg2 versus 16.8 ± 6.1 nV/deg2; p = 0.012), whereas no difference was seen in implicit times. Mean OCT values in the treated regions were lower at follow-up (272 ± 23 ,m versus 327 ± 79 ,m; p = 0.013). No correlation was seen between changes in mfERG response and changes in OCT values. The decrease in retinal thickness was correlated with the number of laser spots applied (p = 0.002). Conclusions:, Focal argon laser treatment is effective in reducing retinal thickness. In addition, treated areas tend to show improved retinal function as demonstrated by increased amplitudes on mfERG. [source] |
